issue. i'm anne makovec. kpix 5's jackie ward live now at oakland international airport with more on the tense hours leading up to this emergency landing. jackie. >> reporter: a passenger we spoke to said she was fearful for her life for four hours as the pilot tried to fix the problem and land safely. people on board southwest flight 2547 said that they knew almost immediately after taking off that something was wrong originally thinking it was an engine issue that the pilot thought could be resolved in a matter of minutes but it turned out to be serious when the landing gear was being brought up after take-off. passengers saw sparks. the pilot then tried to bring it back down. he flew around for 4 hours trying to burn fuel going all around the area and a passenger says she was extremely nervous the whole time. >> the worst part was the beginning because no one would

tell us anything. i thought i was going to die. people are really scared. we're all safe. >> reporter: that passenger said that before they descended they were told to brace themselves but the landing went smoothly. people were clapping, cheering and crying as the planes came to a stop. so other passengers say that they have had enough for the day. they are heading back to the homes in the bay area. some are flying to chicago. jackie ward, kpix 5. as travelers head to the airport for one of the busiest travel days of the year, the tsa making changes to security screening. the agency is now requiring full-body scans for some travelers. instead of allowing people to opt out for a patdown instead. the tsa says the screening will help them detect weapons and

liquids under clothes. a live look outside with the view of coit tower. you can see skies are pretty clear. so it's a good day to travel today. but that's not going to last forever. >> no. it's not. if you are heading up to the high country going to tahoe for the holiday, go today. here's hi-def doppler. no rain on doppler at least in our neck of the woods but look up north. you can see near eureka we are seeing showers heading our way moving in. this rain will move in this evening overnight tonight into tomorrow. clear skies wednesday at noon. advancing into tonight the first round of showers begins to move into the north bay. the front paz through tomorrow morning during what would be the morning commute although hopefully most of you aren't commuting in tomorrow. we'll see heavier showers beginning around 7 a.m. and continuing off and on throughout the day.

lots of snow, as well. and we might see a couple of snowflakes here in the bay area. i have details on that coming up. investigators trying to figure out what caused a mobile home to catch fire in vallejo overnight that started around midnight at the vallejo mobile estates on san joaquin drive. crews kept it from spreading. everybody inside the trailer escaped safely, no injuries. new at noon, traffic moving again in the city's south of market neighborhood after an accident between a minivan and san francisco police chopper. chopper 5 was overhead shortly after it happened at around 10 a.m. police say the minivan ran a red light and slammed into that police motorcycle on 7th street. harrison street was shut down for about an hour between 6 and 7th streets the officer was taken to the hospital. he is expected to survive. we are learning more about the pilot who died after a small plane crash near castro

valley yesterday. kpix 5's kiet do on the challenges crews are facing as they collect debris from the wreckage site. >> reporter: crews couldn't do much recovery yesterday because of stormy weather. so they are hoping with calmer drier conditions today, they will make more progress. the family has identified the victim and the pilot as john sacco of rockland. he is a entrepreneur and industrial hygienist. he worked helping companies avoid occupational health hazards. to give you a sense of the difficult work ahead, take a look at this alameda county fire department photo. the wreck of a piper p.a. 32 is in a steep wooded hill near castro valley. it appears to have struck several trees and broke apart. it will have to be carried out in pieces. it took searchers hours to find the crash site around 33000 palomares road. he lost contact with air traffic controllers 12 miles east of oakland airport 11:30 yesterday morning. >> today my goal is to document the wreckage as it came to

rest. i'm be taking photos, taking measurements. we are going to wait to do a thorough examination after it's recovered. >> reporter: visibility may have been an issue with low clouds, high winds and rain at the time of the crash. the ntsb will also be here on scene to help with the investigation. near castro valley, kpix 5. raymond "shrimp boy" chow is set to take the stand again today in his racketeering trial in san francisco. the alleged chinatown crime boss is charged with several felonies including money laundering and murder. yesterday, he was cross- examined by the prosecution. chow said undercover agents tried to drag him into conversations and force money on him. his lawyers call it entrapment. the woman charged in the deadly las vegas strip crash sunday night appearedded in court for the first time this morning. 24-year-old lakisha holloway of oregon is accused of intentionally plowing her car through crowds of pedestrians as her 3-year-old daughter sat

in the back seat. one person was killed, 35 others injured. her next court appearance is january 20. iraqi security forces continue to try to take control of ramadi from the "islamic state." security forces went in street by street clearing out militants today. they say the two dade offensive has gained ground against the "islamic state." the capture of the city in may was a huge defeat for iraq, which is conducting the ground offensive with the help of its own air force and the u.s.-led multinational committee. >> isis has had the perception for over a year now that they are winning and that gets them recruits, um, both in iraq and syria and overseas. it gets them money. so to the extent that we can begin to turn back that perceptions and take the momentum away from them, that will be really important. >> a u.s. military spokesman called the fall of ramadi inevitable. donald trump heading into

the holiday weekend with a solid lead. this as he defends his use of a word when talking about hillary clinton. and trump's closest rival ted cruz is lashing out at a national newspaper. mark albert has all the latest in the race for the white house. >> reporter: the "washington post" has retracted this animated cartoon depicting ted cruz's children as monkeys. the cartoon was based on his political ad which spotlighted his two daughters. >> happy 5-year-old girls. >> reporter: the cruz campaign quickly turned it into a fundraising event asking supporters for instant emergency contributions totaling $1 million in 24 hours. cruz is enjoying a surge but a new cnn poll still shows him at a distant second to donald trump. >> this is turning more and more into a two-man race between donald trump and me. >> reporter: meanwhile, donald trump defended his use of a word to describe hillary

year will get a 2% increase. those who make more than that will get a 1% raise. a federal judge has upheld a law requiring faith-based pregnancy centers to inform women that abortion is an option. several centers had sued the state claiming that the law requiring them to post signs detailing all reproductive health services violates the first amendment rights. but the judge said the signs provide truthful and nonmisleading information and do not restrict free speech. today a fundraiser is planned for the family of mario woods. he is the man who was shot and killed by san francisco police three weeks ago. the event featuring local musicians and comedians starts at 6:00 tonight at the elbow room in san francisco. police investigators say woods a stabbing suspect was carrying a kitchen knife and advancing on police when he was shot by the police in the bayview. that shooting led to some changes in police procedure. coming up next, a happy

above california, nevada and arizona. it started just after 6 p.m. last night. check it out. streaking northeast to southeast for several minutes, the u.s. military claims it was russian space debris. but some astronomers claim it's a meteor shower peaking now. >> every once in a while at this time of the year, the earth flies through the swath of debris left behind. so what fell to earth was probably a little piece of what used to be part of the comet. >> it's all over facebook and it's crazy. you always wonder what's really going on. >> again, the competing explanation for this thing, some say it's a meteor shower, one says it's another type of meteor shower and the military says it was a russian rocket reentering the atmosphere. a cargo ship docked with

the international space station. the new version is fully digital and features an improved docking system. a beloved duck waddled back to a marin county senior center today for a very happy homecoming. the mallard duck named juanita had been a duckling, taken in at bello gardens assisted living facility in san rafael but then escaped in september and was brought to a wild care center because of permitting issues. apparently air not supposed to keep these things as pets. later officials decided to allow the senior center to keep her as a, quote, educational wild animal. isn't that a happy ending? just in time for the holidays, julie. >> it might be a good day to take a duck out for a walk. some transition. >> it's gorgeous. blue skies in december, a look at the golden gate bridge. turn the temperatures in the 50s pretty much areawide. we are not going to get warmer today. we are staying cool though sunny a beautiful day to be outside. now, our cold front is approaching. passes through tomorrow morning. as it does, that's when we will see heavy rain and showers continuing behind it. cold air in place means low snow levels, as well. wet weather does return tonight with combined rain and snow beginning tomorrow. futurecast times it out. again, dry today throughout the day. we'll see heavier showers tomorrow morning. we continue to see showers throughout the day today. snow levels down around 2500 feet. that means we could see a couple of snow showers say atop

mount diablo. i wouldn't be surprised to see some in the higher elevations in the bay area. futurecast pausing friday at 8 a.m. we have shower activity. showers continue to at least the first half of the christmas. what to expect? afternoon mixture of sun and clouds today a chance of rain returns tonight. morning rain and showers both rain and snow tomorrow. snow in the higher elevations. winter storm warning in effect for tomorrow. you are going to want to anticipate travel delays in the high sierra. if you have to go to tahoe, try to go today if possible because it is going to be tough up there tomorrow. we could see pass level snow 12 to 24 inches. down around 2500 feet, 3 to 8." so pretty impressive storm looking forward to that especially on the slopes. and your tahoe ski report:

more snow expected in the high sierra tomorrow. great ski conditions. sunrise sunset. sunset tonight at 4:55. so before 5:00 this evening. sunrise tomorrow morning 7:23. a look at your high temperatures. as i mentioned not real high today. it's not like we are going to see significant warming, topping out in the 50s areawide. the extended forecast shows more of the same temperature- wise but really the outlier here is going to be the rain. so again, dry today, and then we start to see our showers move in overnight and into tomorrow. snow and rain for tomorrow. friday, some lingering showers likely a little bit of snow up in the high country and then rain down here. and then we start to dry out as we move into the weekend and beyond. and now, speaking of christmas and holidays and the giving spirit, we are talking about "food for bay area

are in the business of making toys. and make no mistake, being a toy designer isn't all fun and games. while you clearly need to have a love for play and a creative streak, more goes into the job than meets the eye. you'll need a solid understanding of design. you should be able to illustrate your ideas through drawing and computer design. safety is also a key concern when building toys for kids. so you need to be attuned to this, as well. companies report that their designers mostly major in industrial design, robotics, business, even child psychology. toy designers in the bay area make over $78,000 a year. not bad for someone who gets to spend the whole day with a bunch of toys. i'm jill schlesinger for kpix 5. ,, ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
