tonight about a deadly confrontation between police and a suspect. mark kelly says it happened in front of a residential treatment facility. >> reporter: barbara returns to the spot where just last night she says she overheard an argument, shots fired and a man'sed about lying on the ground. >> seems to me there might have been a scuffle going on. several shots were fired. >> reporter: preliminary information from palo alto police says when they responded to a call shortly after 9:00 last night, the suspect charged at officers with a knife and shots were fired. neighbors tell kpix 5 the shooting happened in front of this home, a residential treatment program which on its website describes itself as a comfortable safe alternative to in-patient psychiatric care. >> there's never been a problem in that house and the people are very friendly, very nice.

>> reporter: last night, near the body, stuck up in this tree, she also saw a taser wire and in front of the treatment home, two men both upset about the shooting they just witnessed. >> at that point started crying and he just kept repeating it didn't have to happen like this, they didn't have to shoot him. it was only a butter knife. >> reporter: police have yet to confirm if the suspect was in fact holding a butter knife. every neighbor i talked to said they were still comfortable with having that treatment in their neighborhood. kpix 5. switching gears now to a live look outside at the bay bridge where a freeze watch is in effect through tomorrow morning. kpix 5's emily turner is in marine county with the details. >> reporter: it is freezing. it is so cold, you can see your breath out here.

it's the same reason you're able to see the city lights behind me is the same reason you're going to be cold tonight. everybody is bundling up. >> freezing. and i'm from the mountains and it's cold. yes. >> just a hat to cover your ears and warm socks and sensible shoes. >> reporter: that's the key? >> yeah. for women especially. >> reporter: oh. so keep yourself and your pets and plants warm. keep them covered. the freeze warning starts tonight at midnight. covers most of the bay area except the city. temps are going to be in the mid-20s to the 30s. fire officials issued a code blue saying anybody who is outside is at risk for dying from hypothermia. reporting live in marin. >> thank you. emily -- tonight's lows as we put numbers on all of this, san

rafael will be down to 33 degrees. those freeze warnings are posted almost bay wide. overnight lows will be in the mid-20s. specifically, tonight, mountain view will be 27. concord 27. fremont, 31 degrees and yet some rain is on the way. we'll have the details in a few minutes. in ventura county crews are working around the clock to contain a wildfire. it started christmas night and dry conditions in the area aren't helping. as wendy reports, the real worries for firefighters are nearby oil fields and residential areas. >> reporter: a helicopter dropped water on fast-moving flames in ventura county california saturday. the wildfire which shut down parts of the 101 freeway started christmas night. >> it was pushed by heavy strong northwest winds about 50 miles an hour. the fire quickly grew in size. >> reporter: about 600

firefighters are battling the blaze. they're trying to keep the fire from spreading to nearby homes. almost 100 houses were evacuated. >> we had a lot of fuels, light grass, shrubs burning on the coast in and unget the structures. >> reporter: firefighters are also keeping a close eye on nearby oil fields as they deal with difficult terrain, high winds and dry conditions. >> they're trying to cut a line at the top of this ridge line to prevent the fire from slobbing over. >> even though you guys have had good rain in los angeles, we've had maybe a 10th of an inch in the last 6 weeks. >> reporter: no injuries have been reported. it's unknown what started the fire. closer to the home, investigators are call thanksgiving fire in guerneville overnight suspicious. it started outside ana elevator shaft at 2:30 a.m. no one was inside at the time.

fire destroyed a lot of medical and lab equipment. the damage is estimated at half a million dollars, but that could go up once they get a better look inside. today in oakland, the nba's most valuable player helped bay area families get back on their feet. steph curry and his relatives handed out 25-pound boxes of food and basics. personning up with feed the children, they were able to help over 400 families. the media covered the event like a blanket probably because of the nba trophy. >> i guess the championship helps that. it's nice that what we do on the court can continue to shed light on the initiatives off the court. >> this is the third year in a row curry and his family have teamed up with feed the children during the holidays. up next, the future of the raiders in oakland could be

decided in the coming weeks. why the team's owner thinks l.a. is a better move for the franchise. >> and the bay area bike share program is getting bigger. the massive increase you will notice by 2018.

thursday. their lease at xpires next week. the raiders played their last home game this season on thursday. their lease at the coliseum expires next week. fans are worried the team will bolt to los angeles for a second time and kpix's donna lynn shows us how we got here. >> reporter: raiders owner mark davis seems to think the grass is greener in l.a. who dropped the ball? is it the incompetence of oakland city leaders or the greed of an nfl owner? mark davis says the only way he'll stay is a new stadium. problem is he can only come up with $500 million. a stadium costs roughly around a billion dollars. he wants the city and county to post most if not all of that remaining balance. keep in mind, oakland and alameda county spent 1 twenty

seven million dollars to renovate this place to bring the raiders back from l.a. in the 90s. city leaders say there's no way they can go to taxpayers again. they would get sacked by voters. for the last few years, they looked for ways to finance a stadium. the most publicized plan is the ambitious coliseum city. just imagine: a ballpark and the raider's stadium. all of that surrounded by hotels, restaurants, retail stores and condos. the idea is that the developments would bring in the investment dollars to help the raiders bridge the funding gap. martin davis doesn't think it's a winner. he's given up and walking away from oakland. city leaders can drop as many plans or plays as they want. the only people who can stop the move are the nfl owners. nfl owners could vote as early as january if the raiders will

stay or go. kpix 5. bay area streets could soon see more bikes than ever before. the bike share program is expanding from 700 bikes it offered back in 2013 to 7,000 bikes by 2018. earlier this month, a san francisco board of supervisors voted unanimously to let san francisco participate in the expansion effort. by 2018, bike share in san francisco will expand from 3 fist 350 bikes to 2500. customers have until the end of the year to claim refunds for unwanted text messages in. a practice called cramming, the charges are buried in the customer's bills. the 26th of december takes

along the pakistan- afghani border. the quake measured 6-point-2 in magnitude and dozens of people are injured following a strong earthquake along the pakistan- afghanistan border. the quake was 6.2 in magnitude. numerous homes and walls have collapsed. the earthquake was so strong, it was felt as far away as new deli india. 18 workers got trapped after a mine collapsed. it happened yesterday and so far crews have reportedly been able to rescue 11 workers. but authorities say it's getting tough erto save remaining workers due to the risk of another collapse. severe weather is hitting the southern part of the u.s.

in alabama, a tornado swept through last night. the twister sent at least 4 people to the hospital. not seen here, all the flooding. close to 200 roads are shut down because they are under water tonight. we have a little water moving into the bay area, but not a lot. increased clouds tomorrow. rain tomorrow 5. as we look live at intersection of broadway and the embarcadero from high atop battery and broadway, the numbers are chilly. 46 degrees in concord. same for oakland. livermore is down to 41. san francisco 48 degrees. san francisco one of the few places where the freeze warning is not posted tonight. thank you urban heat. 47 in san jose. 44 degrees in santa rosa. freeze warnings are posted throughout the majority of the bay area. overnight lows will be in the mid-20s. record lows are possible tonight but not as probable as

they were last night. we won't be quite as cold tonight as last night. but isolated valleys near 20 degrees as the coldest spots. rain monday. maybe a third to half an inch of rain with more favored in the north bay than the south bay. the rest of the week looks dry. futurecast -- look at the clouds sweep through. by 5:00 tomorrow night, mostly cloudy conditions. we begin sunny and end with cloudy skies and the rain sweeps over the area so by tomorrow night at 11:00, scattered showers through the bay area -- watch what happens by monday. mostly clear. mostly clear skies monday night. stay that way until tuesday morning. we'll stay that way right through 2016. there's no real rain maker in the headlines.
