live from the cbs bay area studios this is kpix5 news. dealing with near-freezing es -- and no heat. huddled in shelters as gas lines are repaired, tonight thousands of pg&e customers dealing with near freezing temperatures and no heat. good evening. i'm brian hackney. >> and i'm juliette goodrich. pg&e shut off gas service to customers in discovery bay. they still have electricity but with no gas that means many will not have any heat. kpix5's emily turner is in discovery bay tonight. now when is the gas going to being turned back on, emily? >> reporter: that's the big question and no one has ab answer. pg&e has a ballpark of maybe 5:00 tomorrow, but they aren't certain because they aren't

saying at this point what it is that's wrong with it. a few dozen bagels and a basketball hoop around much, but at least michael o'connell and his kids are warmed up before they have to go back to their cold home. >> we're all huddled in one room. we've got a little portable heater we're using right now to stay warm because i think it's like 35 right now. >> reporter: his main heat isn't working because pg&e shut down gas to 6,200 customers in discovery bay this morning. the cold weather caused structural damage that requires a major shutdown to repair. >> and we detected a loss of pressure in our gas facilities in discovery bay. we do believe that this is repeated to the low and cold temperatures in the area, although we are still currently investigating the actual cause. >> reporter: so pg&e set up a temporary warming station at timber point elementary school and called in the red cross to help accommodate cold customers. temperatures are expected to dip into the low 30 overnight. >> yeah. we're frustrated. i just wanted to get some

answers and figure out what's going on, but we're just trying to deal with it as best we can. >> reporter: pg&e is trying to do the same thing. the command center is lit up like a christmas tree while hundreds of pg&e employees scour the neighborhood like utility elves making sure everyone's gas is off. they'll work around the clock to fix the problem, but it could take until 5 p.m. tomorrow to get done. >> we need to repressurize the system and then turn on the gas service. so as always, we ask them to keep safety top of mind. >> reporter: so you are okay if pg&e has turned your gas off at your home in discovery bay. to put an electric heater in, just be careful about that. remember, don't put anything too close to that electric heater. they also say be sure when pg&e folks come back out to turn your gas back on at your home, make sure they're licensed. if you're uncomfortable, call pg&e and they'll tell you whether or not there is someone in your neighborhood doing just that. also if you're in coe bay, there is an additional --

discovery bay, there is an additional shelter at discovery bay community center. you can head there if you're cold. >> all good advice. hi-def doppler is tracking scattered showers moving into the bay area tonight. if you're out and about, you probably saw it and felt it for yourself. this is the embarcardero where it was sprinkling steadily around dinner time. this latest rain won't amount to much, owl though there are a few showers moving onto the peninsula this hour. meanwhile up in the north bay a few showers as well dotting the landscape. that sets the stage for the rest of the night. low pressure will pinwheel more showers into the bay area overnight easing up toward sunrise and freeze warnings have been lifted, but it will be cold, overnight lows 36 at livermore, 38 in san jose and then major changes for the last week of 2015 and we'll cover them in the forecast in a few minutes. powerful tornadoes ripped through parts of texas leaving nearly a dozen people dead.

near dallas scenes of utter deaf station, homes flattened -- devastation, homes flattened by the furry of mother nature. cbs's omar villafranca assesses the damage. >> reporter: the disaster is texas sized. >> we heard crashing glass. >> reporter: the occasional lightning strike illuminated the twisters that began touching down in the dallas area around 6:30 saturday night. at least 11 people died including several in their cars when the tornado crossed interstate 30. the path of destruction stretches for 40 miles and more than 600 structures are damaged or destroyed officials say. weather forecasters say two tornadoes clocked speeds of up to 200 miles per hour tossing mobile homes like toys and flattening entire streets. the governor of texas says the situation is still volatile across the northern part of the state that is simultaneously

experiencing extreme ice and snow conditions and torrential rain. >> we need you to remain vigilant. >> reporter: many homes in the community of rowlett have been reduced to piles of debris. local officials sent out four alerts minutes before the tornadoes hit warning people to take cover. >> i think that's why question have fewer fatalities and fewer injuries than we have. >> reporter: at this early stage of the recovery authorities warn the number of victims may still rise. omar villafranca, cbs news, rowlett, texas. meanwhile lubbock, texas, south of the panhandle is blanketed with snow. the city has seen at least 5 inches of snowfall today with more expected through tomorrow. the blizzard has also brought wind gust between 50 and 70 miles per hour causing wild spread power outages across the south plains region in texas. there has been a string of alleged hate crimes against muslim communities and now one bay area group is taking

action. kpix5's maria medina shows us they're using knowledge to fight ignorance. >> after threats of violence and vandalism to their mosque, an islamic community held a public meeting today saying the way to protect themselves is by teaching everybody what islam really is. >> this is our obligation as a muslim to really educate people about islam because people are fearful of what they don't know. >> reporter: they opened their doors to the community, strangers, anyone with questions about their religion. the public meeting comes two weeks after vandals broke out a window at their center in what they believe is a hate crime. >> islam is about peace, but in reality caring, respecting one another. >> reporter: they say they're also getting calls of hatred from their center and they're far from alone. an islamic group believes a

molotov cocktail thrown was a hate crime and in houston their place of worship was also lit on fire and earlier this month a muslim man recorded this woman after she began yelling still ins about the islamic faith. >> violence -- insults about the islamic faith. >> violence is not an answer to anything. in every community whether it's christian, judaism, anything you will have always a bad apple. >> reporter: after tonight's meeting members of the islamic center of alameda hope people will walk away keeping that in mind. as for their center, they say the building was vacant when someone threw a rock at their window and broke it. no one was hurt. maria medina, kpix5 news. the u.s. times reports in the u.s. hate crimes against muslim americans and mosques have tripled since the paris terrorist attacks last month. san jose will be in the spotlight when the super bowl

comes to town, but there's a building that could tarnish some of the shine. a vacant mcdonald's at third and san carlos downtown has become a prime target for taggers. kpix5's mark kelly with a plan for the eyesore, a story you'll only see on 5. >> reporter: could call it art, but this visitor from los angeles has another name for it. >> probably consider it vandalism. >> it is a problem down here. >> reporter: president of the downtown residents association kimberly brady worries what tourists will say come super bowl seeing graffiti on property like this and others in downtown san jose. after all, players will be staying just around the corner from this site. >> the graffiti and vacant storefront is not going to help. >> reporter: ever since somebody tons recently closed this -- since mcdonald's recently closed this restaurant following a decade long run,

vandals have had their way with. >> this is just their way of putting their gang affiliation or whatever it is on the walls. >> reporter: they recently asked the mcdonald's corporation to paint a large mural on the entire be hoping the artwork -- building hoping the artwork would deter vandals from tagging the building. this mural managed to keep taggers away with a few exceptions. >> they seem to in a way respect the art. so i think if there's something here, it would at least deter, maybe not completely resolve it, but it would help. >> reporter: and in san jose mark kelly, kpix5. other bay area headlines, you'll be looking at a route that a southwest airlines flight took to oakland after getting diverted tonight. it had taken off from sacramento headed to denver, but there was some kind of a mechanical problem. the plane did make it safely to oakland. southwest says all the passengers were fine.

they haven't said what was wrong with the plane. the driver of the suv that hit a tour bus in san francisco is expected to be cited. this particular crash happen last night along embarcardero building. the bus driver got cut off having to slam on the brakes causing the crash. it's a race for the clock. the chronicle reports the deck of the retired ship the hornet has sprung a leak. the foundation that owns the floating museum is frantically trying to patch holes in the 100,000 square foot flight deck which is made of teak before the winter rains arrive. peyton manning insisting it's all lies, what the quarterback is threatening to do now he's been accused of using human growth hormones. >> diagnosing concussions while players are still on the side

lawsuits, long term brain damage, even a movie out now. the debate, are we doing enough to protect athletes? i talked to some bay area researchers who are testing better ways to diagnose concussions on and off the field. avily edited) "it's always in thea . everytime they it's a sound that makes you cringe, professional athletes getting hit hard on the playing field. even worse, when it's your child. the cringing turns to fear about the possibility of a concussion. >> every time i touch the bar, you're always thinking about it. >> reporter: now stanford university researchers are using a new technology to detect and track concussions. >> follow my finger from corner to corner to corner to corner. >> reporter: it's called dynamic visual sing newsation or eye sync. -- synchronization or eye sync. their eye movements are recorded and analyzes for focus

and impaired vision as they follow the screen in front of them. >> you'll see if someone is following it well and you can see it on the screen, it's a smooth sign going up and down, but someone that's concussed you'll see little jumps where they're kind of jumping ahead of the target. >> reporter: it's a game changer. in the past you'd be asked to follow a doctor's finger to check your eye movement. if you're an athlete, you'd be taken off the field, told to go home and rest and stay in a dark room. for athletes the 30 second test can keep them off the bench and back in the game. >> we have situations where somebody comes off, look impaired. they may complain, but their eye tracking is normal. we'll put them back into play. >> reporter: technology could also be a lifesaver because data gathered here doesn't rely on patient's reporting their own symptoms. >> we know that people who have a concussion are three times more likely to get another concussion because they're impaired. >> do me a favor and just look straight ahead.

>> reporter: i tried out the desktop persian of the eye sync tester. this is what the athlete will do if they're taken off the field? this is one of the measures? okay. >> reporter: the doctor has also developed goggles using the same technology similar to these which can be used right on the sidelines during games. it's another way to protect athletes of all ages. >> is it a brain injury and do you recover from it? so we got to measure things and see if somebody really has a concussion. >> stanford is looking for bay area schools willing to test their athletes using this technology. so far nearly three dozen bay area schools are participating in the testing. all right. we have a lot to talk about tonight, first some showers that are moving through the bay area, but first we would skate down the avenue, but there isn't any ice. that's judy garland and fred astaire, but there was plenty of ice at union square. it was beautiful ice skating

weather today. if it's cold, you might as well take advantage. hang on there, guy. it's tough first time. a lot of families had their kids out there today, nice day for it where you barely had to use mechanical devices to freeze anything. temperatures struggled to get into the low 50s today. rain now is around the peninsula, just off the peninsula in san francisco and right over there on the san mateo and dumbarton bridge. scattered showers in the forecast and some in the north bay around 101 north of santa rosa. that's setting the stage for the night. we'll have showers off and on that amount to less than 1/4 inch in most locations. right now concord has 41, san francisco 45 and san jose 46 degrees as low pressure pinwheels showers into the bay area overnight. the high pressure that's building behind all this will really affect our weather. so first showers. s that low dissipates --

showers. as that low dissipates, we'll be looking for a blocking high to form. in the eastern pacific the high pressure will keep us dry the rest of the week after we dispense with the showers tonight. we'll finish in uncharacteristic dry fashion in what has been a fairly decent autumn and winter so far. futurecast shows the showers right out of the area tonight. tomorrow we'll have a few clouds around and then slow clearing toward sunset and by tomorrow night at this time mostly clear skies and cool temperatures. rain futurecast doesn't show much, .13 at ukiah, .1-inch around san jose and the east bay. as we overlook the runway at the san jose airport, we've got showers overnight, clearing monday and 3 right through new year's dry -- and dry right through new year's day. sun and snow showers at lake tahoe and yosemite, temperatures in the mountains

it's been a fixture in the north bay for five decades. >> now a family is closing up its neighborhood pet shop for good. we go inside the small family business that's had a big impact. >> are you allowed to hold the hoop? >> reporter: fred plowman was a little kid himself when he first began working with animals. >> after school i'd go over to my grandmother's pet store and clean the pets and that's how it all started, i guess. >> reporter: in san rafael the plowman family have been selling and maintaining all manner of fish or fowl, reptile or rodent for 80 years and pet arcade has been right here for more than 50 of them. it's an old-fashioned pet store that will board animals when their owners go on vacation, where countless generations have been born, many thanks to this guy aptly nicknamed stud, but stud is about to be retired because the last day of this year will be the last day for pet arcade. the store is closing. the latest victim of the

internet shopping trend. >> everybody is doing stuff online and it kills our little mom and pop places. >> reporter: they weren't happy about it, but today people came by to stock up on supplies and say their good- byes and while fred says he won't miss cleaning cages, when he talked about his customers -- >> they're nice people. >> reporter: -- the crack in his voice reveals how he feels about them. it won't be easy to close these doors, but fred has his roses and softball games and he'll get to go fishing more often with his childhood buddy richard who turns 80 next week. >> he got his new pacemaker yesterday, so we can do anything we want now. >> yeah. i can go another 10 years. >> reporter: folks around here will miss fred, but they don't have to worry about him because the nice thing about growing up in a pet store is you never really have to grow up at all. in san rafael, john ramos,

one-billion dollars at the box office. took just 12 days. the prev days set by star wars, the force awakens has become the fastest movie to reach $1 billion in the box office in just 12 days. the previous record was set by jurassic world in june. star wars took in more than $153 million. daddy's home, joy, sisters, alvin and the chipmunks round out the top five. because disneyland owns the star wars franchise now it's got the largest expansion e. the theme park is adding a -- ever. the theme park is adding a new star wars area, but disney has not said when it will be open to park visitors. to make way for the attraction it will close frontierland for good. the rivers of america will be shut down temporarily. they better not touch it's a small world. >> they better not. we'll be right back.
