bomb squad to the scene. cate. reporter: the materials were black powder and shotgun caps for the purpose of making shotgun shells. but in the hour they were investigating san jose firefighter evacuated people 300 feet from the station. around 10 a.m. someone dropped off two milk criticized boxes here at the station and a -- milk crate boxes here at the station and they found the boxes with questionable material and didn't know how to properly dispose of them. >> they were cleaning out an old storage unit found this product and were like that doesn't look safe and brought it appropriately to the fire station. we would ask people in the future to not transport that material to basically call us to the scene to be evaluated there. >> reporter: at first glance teams believed it was blasting caps and black powder so they

moved to secure it near the villages parkway and give everyone the "all clear." as the captain mentioned if you find yourself in a similar situation call san jose fire or san jose police. they will come to you. they ask you not to transport it yourself. live in san jose, cate caugiran, kpix 5. right now firefighters are mopping up after a fire erupts at an apartment building in san francisco's inner sunset. chopper 5 overhead as crews check for hot spots on the roof of the three-story building on fourth avenue and lincoln way. no injuries have been reported but a cat died in the fire. up in napa fire destroyed a home and barn. chopper 5 over the scene today on wooden valley road. firefighters shut down the road as they tried to put out the flames around 6 a.m. they say power lines made that firefight difficult. and federal investigators say they are now helping to solve a string of suspicious fires in guerneville the fires began in mid-december damaging

three homes, a public health center and an inn. it was deemed suspicious, although they doesn't know whether it's serial arson. new video of the stranded elephant seal. chopper 5 over sonoma county where the 900-pound mammal has been crawling on highway 37. just yesterday it made its way on the highway near the sonoma raceway. it caused problems for drivers as police and chp worked to guide it back into the slough. jackie ward is on seal watch this afternoon. >> reporter: she hasn't gone back to 37 yet. but as you can see, she likes swimming along. it's been a busy 24 hours from what they are calls the seal. the mud marks are from her flippers. back and forward and back we go.

this 900-pound elephant seal doesn't want to go back to the bay not dampening anyone's spirits. >> i could be doing paperwork or be out with this beautiful animal. >> reporter: thins were looking good as people from the marine mammal center were able to corral her a third of the way around the lagoon. >> she is fine, healthy, in no danger. >> reporter: after this attempt with a kayak and air horns [ beep beep ] >> reporter: she shimmied her way all the way back to where she was this morning. but the tides are turning lid rally and that's good news for the seal. >> it's a lot work to hall her around. the more water, the more incentive to move. >> reporter: if she doesn't, they will be out here for days trying to get they are out of here. >> reporter: so viewing all that hanging out here on the lagoon beach is normal for elephant seals. what's not normal is where she

dumped more than 3 feet of snow an created 10-foot drifts. blizzard conditions knocked out power for 200,000 people in oklahoma and icy roads led to hundreds of accidents and stranded cars on highways. the impact is being felt at the airports. 800 flight cancellations stranded thousands of travelers during the travel week. lines at chicago o'hare airport spanned the length of a football field. yesterday, 1300 flights were canceled and there were hundreds more delayed. it may be little consolation but most major airlines are not charging customers rebooking feels. there's minimal impact here in the bay area, only a handful of flights delayed or canceled at oakland international airport. sunnyvale police say they caught a burglar just minutes after broke into a gun store. investigators say the man stole a car before breaking into the u.s. firearms store on mary avenue this month. he didn't steal anything but is

accused of stealing a second car forgetthe getaway. city of oakland will reportedly miss tomorrow's deadline to give the nfl a financing plan for new raiders stadium. the "chronicle" says the city does plan to send nfl officials an update on their efforts to keep the team. nfl team owners could decide in january whether to allow raiders, chargers or rams to move to los angeles. the trial of raymond "shrimp boy" chow resumes today. final witnesses were postponed from yesterday because of a sick juror. the case could go to the jury next week. chow faces charges including murder, money laundering and drug trafficking. new at noon las vegas police are looking at surveillance video to identify the killer of a man outside a gym. investigators say the man, the victim, was inside his car with california license plates when he was shot to death. the video shows the passenger of a car shoot from the window

killing the man who is in his 30s. a white chicago police officer pleaded not guilty today in the shooting death of a black teen. jason van dyke faces six counts of murder and one count of misconduct. dashcam video last month caused outrage. it shows the veteran officer shooting laquan mcdonald 16 times. the fugitive teen who used an "affluenza" defense is back in custody. the boy and his mother were found in mexico. omar villafranca reports. >> reporter: ethan and tanya couch, mother and son, are now in the hands of mexican authorities after the pair was apprehended in puerto vallarta on the pacific coast of mexico. the new image released by mexican officials shows 18-year- old couch with an altered

appearance. his blonde hair now a dark brown. >> we're excited that we have them back in custody. to be honest with you, we're going to breathe a lot easier when they're back in this country. >> reporter: earlier this month, the two disappeared after couch missed a meeting with his probation officer. ethan couch made headlines two years ago when he eluded jail time after killing four people in a drunk driving crash. during the trial, a psychologist testified on behalf of couch saying the teen suffered from "affluenza" saying his parent's well left him without a sense of responsibility. officials think they may have fled because of this video that surfaced this month and appears to show couch at a party where a drinking game was being played. this could have violated his probation. even though he is 18, couch's case hasn't been transferred over to an adult court, which means he will face punishment in juvenile court and at worst be sent to juvenile detention.

of cigarettes. starting january 1, teenagers in parts of santa clara county can no longer buy a pack of cigarettes. the unincorporated parts of the county will be the first in the u.s. to raise the smoking age from 18 to 21. stores will have to post signs about the age increase and retailers will be fined up to $100 for the first violations. the rules also apply to electronic cigarettes. a new study shows that in california, 64% of smokers started smoking by the age of 18. a weekend wildfire in southern california is now fully contained. firefighters in ventura county surrounded the flames that burned 2 square miles along the coast. there are still hot spots and gusty winds today could keep firefighters from putting it out completely. power lines caused the fire closing 101 and pacific coast highway. distracted cell phone use walking with your eyes glued to

a group of strangers came together... to help. they played th when a girl in livermore lost her mother on christmas day a group of strangers helped out. they played the role of santa. the woman died on the 25th from a medical condition.
