the burj khalifa the world's tallest skyscraper. it broke out near a fireworks display about 10 p.m. dubai time. here's a live look now where they just rang in the new year just minutes ago. there's a 12-hour time difference. the tower by the way is 1,000 feet tall and nearly two million people expected in dubai for that celebration. and you can see they still have some work to do there. right now we're learning one person has died of a heart attack. 14 people have minor injuries. the cause of the fire is under investigation. here at home huge crowds gathered on the waterfront as a megaship travels through the bay. the benjamin franklin docked at the oakland outer harbor an hour and a half ago. kpix 5's jackie ward tells us there was quite a watch party for it. jackie, you had a front row seat. >> reporter: it was beautiful. people wanted a good spot to welcome the benjamin franklin to the bay area and they were

[ laughter ] >> really big. >> reporter: for some, there were tears as this woman remembered her late father, who decades ago was in the container ship business. >> i just feel honored that we keep inventing, rethinking, it's what's going to make our world continue to move forward. >> reporter: this couple used the occasion to celebrate their 60th birthday. >> the goal is go to the museum and then we heard about the boat coming in so we thought we would see the biggest ship to come to america. >> reporter: the nearly quarter mile container ship nearly swallowed alcatraz and was definitely worth a selfie-worthy moment. >> it's an american name under

a london flag built by the french. it's the world. >> reporter: it's journey began in china a few weeks ago. it was docked recently in los angeles before starting to oakland. few ports in the united states can handle such a vessel. oakland has invested millions in dredging and upgrading terminals to manage container ships this big, offering hope for more economic growth. >> it's really going to bring a lot of jobs to the bay area because you just have a lot more containers you know. so it's going to be good for the port of oakland. it's going to be good for the bay area and everybody. >> reporter: port officials say the vessel got there safely to the port of oakland, where it will stay until sunday afternoon or monday morning. from fort point, jackie ward, kpix 5. >> it's a quarter mile long and can carry 18,000 contain terps. it's operated by a company in

france. they plan to use it in regular service connecting china with the west coast. the super bowl still 38 days away but a battle on the field is already raging. a south bay youth soccer field is suing the nfl. cate caugiran reports. >> reporter: there was an outpouring of support for the youth league hearing what the judge had to say. santa clara's youth soccer league is fighting for their place to play. they say their fields are being handed over to the nfl for free and worry about the condition they will be returned in. the original plan was staging area for the halftime show but now it will be a media center for 6,000 visiting press. the concern is the plywood and stakes for a media center will destroy the pitch, potentially destroying the high quality grass and irrigation leaving 1500 players without a place to play. >> we want adequate fields for

the club. we secured those fields. if any others are available we are open to trying to locate that. >> the city broke its own law. essentially, the youth that's allowed for the park is for and i quote directly youth soccer only. >> reporter: attorney for santa clara's youth league argued when the city built the field years ago it was under a conditional use permit and the planning commission only approved one use of the youth soccer park, youth soccer. so before they enter into a cold front with the nfl they have to hold a -- before they enter into a contract with the nfl they have who told a public hearing. the hearing was pushed back to next wednesday when both sides will be able to present thei argument. cate caugiran, kpix 5. an icy roadway caused a crash today. the driver of this hog island oyster company van took a curve too fast, hit the brakes, slid off highway 1 into the bay just south of tomales in west marin.

it rolled over once before as you can see landing back on its wheels in four feet of water. the driver got out okay. in san francisco right now, crews are working to repair a sinkhole in the noe valley neighborhood. it opened up early this morning after an 18" sewer main failed on church street between 24th and jersey streets. muni reps say the j-church line is still blocked and there are some delays on the n-judah line, as well. it's one of the world's biggest new year's eve celebrations. more than a million people are expected to party tonight in new york's times square. a billion more will watch on tv. jamie yuccas talked to people already lined up for the festivities. >> reporter: crowds for the world's biggest party showed up early to get a spot in times square. >> this is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. so i figured i'd get it out of the way while i'm still young. >> reporter: at the same time security is working to make sure revelers can safely ring in the newer. >> we are the best prepared city in the country. we know how to do big events.

we have shown it time and time again. >> reporter: officials say there is no specific credible threat but close to 6,000 officers will be in times square, some in uniform, some undercover. snipers on rooftops, garbage cans removed, manhole covered sealed shut and radiation detectors deployed. >> both to capabilities on the threat analysis beforehand, the potential side of it as well as the capability to respond very quickly. we believe we are as prepared as anybody can be. >> reporter: spectators will be searched. once in place, revelers cannot get outside of these pens and no backpacks or large bags are allowed. tell me you're here. >> i'm here because it's my birthday. as soon as the ball drops at midnight. and it's my 19th birthday. >> reporter: those showing up early aren't worried. they are excited for a good time. preparations for that have been under way, too. organizers have already tested confetti and the ball had its test run and is ready to go at

midnight. here at home the oakland police department warns new year's revelers not to fire guns in the air to celebrate. there is a zero tolerance policy, but it happens every year. it's common sense but the bullets come down somewhere and they could injure or kill one. police will also be looking for shooting off illegal fireworks tonight. crowd control barriers are going up in san francisco home to the bay area's biggest public new year's event. the fireworks along the embarcadero. large crowds and gridlock are expected before and after midnight for the fireworks along the waterfront. police say security will be tight. >> we're going to have officers driving patrol cars on foot, bicycles, motorcycle. we are going to have officers also in plainclothes which we do typically in any type of large event. we do want this to be safe. >> and the coast guard has set up a safety zone near the san francisco ferry building. boaters will not be allowed into the area unless they have

special authorization. of course, the roads will be packed as people head to nair new year's celebrations. gianna franco has your transit options if you would rather ride than drive. >> reporter: if you plan on celebrating into the wee hours of the morning, you have a lot of options for transportation to get you home tonight. first off, bart will be running extra service until 3 a.m. also running a skip stop train pattern at their popular stops to ease platform crowding. plan on extra service for light rail free service for new year's eve for muni from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. no cable cars though tonight. they will have bus service in place. four southbound trains for caltrain, that starts after midnight. and free service for ac transit from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. fireworks begin at midnight near the ferry building along the embarcadero so expect busy conditions if you are heading out of the east bay tonight, do come into san francisco early. have fun. >> and be sure to bundle up if you plan to go outside for the

fireworks tonight. it's chilly. >> it is chilly especially when you factor in the breeze if you will out with everyone tonight bringing in the new year about midnight. we are expecting temperatures in the mid-30s away from the bay within that body of water. otherwise, low 50s bayside. coastside and also around the peninsula. the winds will be flat. overnight, numbers plummet to the 20s, 30s and 40s. right now the visibility is unlimited. as we take a bird's-eye view from the transamerica pyramid towards angel island and alcatraz, clear skies, beautiful and chilly. it's 50 in san jose. but when do you factor in the winds, even up to 6 miles per hour, makes it feel like low 40s. 10-mile-an-hour winds in san ramon makes it feel like the 30s. so have a jacket. we are going to talk about the full first day of 2016 forecast and also frank, we do have

storms heading this way. we'll track it together later in this broadcast. >> okay, roberta, thank you very much. we are going back to that breaking news. this is dubai where, um, a major hotel 1,000 feet skyscraper caught fire. one man is dead from a heart attack. there have been some injuries. but the show is going on. that fire started two hours ago and they just rang in the new year at 12 p.m. our time about 11 minutes ago. the party continues but they are still fighting the fire at a sky scraper in dubai. cal's all pac-12 quarterback jared goff is going pro. he announced plans to forego his senior year at cal much to frank's dismay. >> yes. >> and join the nfl during a press conference a short time ago. he set a number of cal records including most touchdowns and yards passed. he will likely be the first quarterback selected in the draft and there's a very good chance he could be a top 10 pick in the first round. >> i hope the 49ers are taking notes. local kid should be good.

shaded-over areas around highway 37. otherwise, sunny and dry conditions through tomorrow. again, tonight's forecast in the mid-30s to the low 40s around inland areas coast bay peninsula and bayside. here's your futurecast. this is really interested. because here's your midnight our nothing but clear skies as the fireworks go off. friday will be clear with increasing clouds overnight friday into into saturday. partly sunny saturday. first storm of 2016 begins to move into the far reaches of the north bay by sunday morning. it promises to produce about an inch of rain. right now we have a weak area of high pressure building in with the passage of that weak area of low pressure that brought us .10" of rain yesterday. so the high begins to scoot to the east. that low will move in on sunday. behind it a more potent system for your tuesday. meanwhile, if you are heading to the high sierra, just keep in mind cold, cold, cold. lots of powder northstar and also heavenly valley with plenty of lifts available. 28 in fact. but dress in layers. 50s across the board today,

are quite expensive also because they are all being imported. the price will drop from different growing areas in the future but right now it's limited. so let's talk about selection and storage. when you buy them, the less green the better on the outside. tight netting all the way around and heavy. when you bring them home, store them in the refrigerator but take them out about the a day before you want to enjoy them or couple of hours so they get to room temperature. that way they taste better. they are a superfood. they are loaded with nutritional value. cantaloupe imported in. select them and store them right. i'm tony tantillo, your fresh grocer. and always remember to eat fresh and stay healthy. after 30 years in advertising, this week's jefferson award winner decided to go back to teaching. that decision opened his eyes and opened the door to college for more than 100 kids here in the bay area. allen martin reports. >> one of the things that i think you guys are doing is -- >> reporter: as one of the 7 kids, charles schmuck always appreciated what he had growing up but in 2005 he began to feel

especially grateful. >> i don't remember having a conversation with my dad and saying, look, is it okay if i go to santa clara, can you afford it? it was just you're going and we'll find the money. >> reporter: back in the classroom he saw kids didn't have money for college and even temperature they did very few -- and even if they did, very few finished. >> if you look at what happened six years later only one in five have graduated after six years. >> reporter: so in 2005, charles started the peninsula college fund to help kids who would be the first in their families to go to college have a better chance of succeeding. >> most of our kids have household incomes of under $50,000. >> reporter: working with nine high schools in east palo alto, east menlo park and redwood city, pcf provides a qualifying student with a $3,000 a year scholarship, summer job placement, internships and mentoring.

that first year charles sent three kids off to college. today, because of pcf, 74 students are in colleges all across the country and 51 are graduated. >> read and translate. >> reporter: because of pcs, ed -- because of pcf, tanya garcia pena went to college at cal and is now working on her masters and ph.d. >> i was considering going to community college and san francisco state or something like that and then transfer. i really wanted to go to berkeley and i think they made that final. >> reporter: stanford professor tomas jimenez is her mentor. the professor considers it his way of giving back. >> my father much like tanya came from mexico when he was young didn't speak english. initially struggled through school but had amazing mentors in his life who helped him get through. >> reporter: for charles, he hopes the program will have unknown benefits. >> we'll never know all the impact this program has had because it's going to be the tanyas of the world who influence somebody who is not
