good afternoon, everybody. >> kiet do live at levi stadium. it sounds like york is shouldering all of the blame. >> reporter: yeah, it's been a year since jed york stood before a room full of reporters and cameras telling everybody to hold him accountable if they were not winning a super bowl. he's not taken the podium until now. 24 hours after the firing of jim tomsula and jed york walked into the room. he said a season like this ages, you said he's likely lost a lot of hair in the process. the 27-minute press conference covered a range of topics. they've stepped back from their plans to win a super bowl, acknowledged the bappers onen airplanes and jim harbaugh's tweet. no, he's not selling the people. he said he's learned a lot in this past year and sending tweets out as a ceo is distracting. he will be taking a step back

from social media. he said trent baalke is still the gm. he still likes colin kaepernick but the decisions will be left to the staff. he acknowledged they took a chance on jim tomsula whom he referred to as jimmy t. above all, he said the season left him humbled. >> i realized that 2015 wasn't fun. it wasn't easy. i don't take the fans' support lightly. i understand how much passion that you have for this team and even if it's in the form of criticism of me, i respect it. and you deserve more and will get more. >> i would rather take a swing like we did on jimmy t. the nice thing about the nfl if you miss, they reward you. we have a high draft pick. >> reporter: and as for what's going on in and around levi stadium, workers wasted no time to get the stadium ready for super bowl 50. chopper 5 was overhead as workers replaced parts of the field. construction equipment now taking up most of the parking

lot and workers are building the temporary structures for the big game. the big game, the super bowl, 34 days away. expect a lot of changes to happen. we're live in santa clara, kiet do. waves of rain and we got a taste this morning of what's to come all week. roberta is tracking it. >> four storms blew through the area affecting the commute. the wran is out of here. it's traversing off it in an easterly direction. as it does so, upstream that's where the main focus is as of right now. that will be the next band of rain showers moving in. this morning we saw only 4/100ths in the san jose area to nearly .50 north of the golden gate bridge where currently we have a slate of gray. okay. here we go. look out over the open waters. see that brand-new area of low pressure? that's storm number 2 as the low pressure moves out, the

second storm moves in late tonight and overnight. storm number 3 is right on its heels to affect your wednesday. we'll track the storms together coming up later in this newscast. frank? >> okay. thank you. the markets in a new year's nose dive. looking live at the big board, the dow is getting hammered. over 400 points. at this hour, let's check in with jason brooks to find out what's going on. jason? >> frank, a rough start to 2016. no doubt about that. you could trace it all back to china. we saw a big plunge in china's main stock exchange, the shanghai. china's economy has been slowing down for some time now. that sent a wave of selling triggering new circuit breakers in china which were just put into effect a month ago in order to calm down the markets after china saw that big selloff last summer who i hit u.s. stockses too. analysts say it might have created papically selling and

china took a lun plunge and we saw the dominoes take a dive. increased tensions between iran and saudi arabia, not helping at all. frank? >> thank you, jason. a developing story now in the north bay. a prominent politician's relative is found dead on a boat on christmas day. today, the same vessel sinks. jackie ward has the latest on the investigation. >> excuse me. this is rough. >> reporter: on christmas morning, gregory johnson found his best friend identified by the coroner as jennifer newsom dead on her boat. she's the cousin of gavin newsom. >> i heard last night this bang and it was just -- it was unusual. >> reporter: this happened around 4:45 this morning. no one was on the boat at the time. the local police, fire and coast guard responded quickly. the coast guard said this

happens to boats that haven't been out of the harbor in a while. >> all of the boats sink, especially with the rains we've been getting. sometimes it overwhelms the bilge pumps. it's something that we see fairly regularly. >> reporter: we spoke to newsom's brother about how he's holding up. he said he's hanging in there and got a call from his cousin gavin. >> he's a busy guy on the campaign but he called me personally and said condolences. he's a great guy. i'm doing all right. i have a big family, a supportive family. >> reporter: but things are not sitting well with johnson. he's lived here for two years and says something isn't right. >> that she's dead and this boat sank. i think something goofy is going on around here. >> reporter: the coast guard said they are still investigating what caused the boat to sink. in the meantime, it's going to take hours for the vessel to be extracted from the water. there are several environmental concerns regarding the sunken boat. in san rafael, jackie ward,

kpix 5. >> it took hours to raise the boat. the coast guard put up buoys to contain any leaking fuel. workers are returning to the san bernardino offices that were the scene of that massacre last month. this is the first time any of the employees of the inland regional center have stepped foot on the property since 14 people were gunned down during a holiday party. the director of the irc says there's anxiety but many are eager to get back to work. >> i think it will be hard for them to go back into the site where everything happened. basic it would be devastating for the people that witnessed it. >> while the center's two main buildings reopened, the conference center will stay closed indefinitely. >> in the wake of the massacre president obama's new year's resolution is gun control. he's meeting with the attorney general and fbi director. he it putting touches on the

orders aimed at tightening gun sales, including tightening background checks. he will make his case in a town hall meeting on thursday and in his state of the union address coming up on january 12th. checking bay area headlines. we know the identities of the two people killed in a crash in pleasant hill. the 69-year-old amelia lopez flipped over and hit the medium around 8:00 last night. lopez, along with 68-year-old maria lopez died of their injuries. another passenger described as a 78-year-old female is hospitalized. san francisco police need help finding this armed robbery suspect. he held up the clerk at a gas station in the 1200 block of la play yoa streets. he got away with $400. the clerk was not hurt. a new lane configuration on the golden gate bridge starting today. three lanes in each direction starting monday, tuesday,

this morning the justi and f- b-i filed developing news on the cheating store from volkswagen emissions. the fbi filed a civil complaint against the carmaker. volkswagen is accused of illegally installing software to bypass emissions standards. more than 600,000 vehicles sold here in the u.s. were involved. the company could still face criminal charges. the nation's newest supersized container ship is

about to pull out of port. the benjamin franklin arrived new year's eve. it's nearly a quarter mile long. that's about as long as the empire state building is tall. we're getting our first look at that container ship that went to the bottom of the ocean during hurricane joaquin. the ntsb has released into thage of the el faro. investigators found the command center but the data recorder was missing. >> we got up to that level and to see just openness was -- it's extremely moving and difficult to -- it's a very big surprise to us to see that. >> without the data recorder, investigators can't explain why the ship seemed to be heading straight for a hurricane. the bodies of the crew members have never been found. developing news up in oregon where an armed militia style group is vowing to stay put indefinitely. they've been holed up in some federal buildings since

saturday. now john blackstone says the fbi is stepping in. >> reporter: at the occupied compound, protesters are setting up camp and settling in for the long haul. bundy says they are fighting back against the government's expansion of the over 100-year- old federal wildlife refuge at the expense of local ranchers. >> there's been some tremendous abuses. they have used the courts to prosecute and to basically take theland and resources away from the people. >> reporter: back in 2014, bun dip's father was embroiled in the dispute with federal officials over grazing rights on federal land in nevada. that escalated into an armed confrontation. this group set up camp saturday after a march at a nearby town supporting two ranchers. >> go, hammonds. >> reporter: dwight hammond and his son were convicted of setting fires on federal land

in 2001 and served jail time. they say it wasn't arson but controlled burns to protect their property. in october, a judge added four more years to their sentence. >> seems like a little overreach for having burned 127 acres. >> reporter: in a statement, the hammond's attorney reports they are not associated with bundy's group. saying neither ammond or anyone within the group or organization speak for the family. but protesters say they plan to stay put until all local ranchers reclaim land they allege was stolen by the u.s. government years ago. john blackstone, cbs news, burns, roark. >> watt and steven are on their way to southern california to surrender to authorities and start serving their sentence. an elephant seal that blocked a bay area highway last week is leaving her wild days behind. that's because the 900-pound mammal just became a mom. she gave birth to this pup on

according to jerry to about .25 in novato, so says dana. thank you for checking in. brentwood, 50. let's head outside to our doppler radar and we can clearly see the coast is clearing out. see all of that stuff over the central valley? that's what rolled through the bay area during the morning commute. measuring up to about .50 in the santa rosa area upstream, that's the leading edge of storm number 2 that promises to bring us heavier rainfall and gusty winds beginning with later on tonight into tomorrow morning's commute and scattered throughout the day on your tuesday. now, meanwhile, taking a look out towards sfo where we have airport delays. 1 hour, 30 minutes. no reports of delays at oakland or mineta international airport. we are -- we're currently in the 50s. yes, this is the first neep storm -- first el nino storm

of the season. these systems rolling in, we won't have any lowering snow levels here locally within the bay area. what we're looking at right here, it looks pretty disorganized. that's the second front that promises to move into the bay area. the weak area of low pressure, the one that caused the rain showers this morning, that's out of here. behind it, that's storm number 2, that's 3 and that will affect our wednesday morning commute. so every morning commute will be affected by wet conditions except for friday. future cast, very light hit-and- miss scattered showers. this is the leading edge of the precipitation associated with storm number 2. el nino characteristics. it will blow through the north bay and there you have the front but the morning commute will still have instability with the passage of the front. the winds will blow up to 40 miles per hour at times. and within the stability there is a is the chance of a thunderstorm. what do you see here?

that's storm number three. that's slated for your wednesday morning commute with heavier rainfall, at least a couple of inches. that will be on top of tuesday's rain and monday's rain. we'll probably see some power lines perhaps go down or maybe trees toppled in the bay area with that saturated soil. that's your impulse for thursday bridging us more precipitation. so when we tally it up, the first system, we have .50 at the bay. by tuesday afternoon, easily about .50 to the east but heavier amounts to the north. wednesday, 2.50 in the u kye area. 1.75 in santa rosa. nearly 2 inches in fairfield. additional rainfall as we walk you through thursday. some of our valley area, top peaks in the bay area will see additional rainfall. winter storm warning from tonight until 10:00 tomorrow night. two feet of cement is going to fall in the high sierra. 50s across the board. a mild day in comparison to
