new at 11:00, chaos inside a house of worship. a long-term dispute comes to blows. people swinging swords in a northern california temple. good evening. i'm juliette goodrich. >> i'm brian hackney. a day of prayer turned in to an all-out brawl. it was all caught on video. it happened in a sikh temple in the town of central valley. lemour abrams on what sparked the fight. >> reporter: cell phone video captured the chaos inside the sikh temple. police moving in with tasers drawn after this day of prayer was interrupted with punching and shoving and some men swinging their religious

swords called cuprawns. he says a dispute over temple leadership became heated and it's nothing new. different factions have been fighting for power for years, now in a legal battle to win control over the temperature's decisions. >> you seem dispressed about it -- distressed about it. >> i am. it portrays a negative connotation about our religion. >> reporter: a peaceful religion they say but like many, i many -- ideology. many didn't want to talk for fear of retaliation. for now people involved in the sword fight are recovering with cuts and bruises. >> i'm told previous fights police responded to at the sikh temple weren't as bad but with this conflict escalating members tell me this is a dispute that

will end up in court again. lemor abrams, kpix 5. the manhunt for a gunman on a deadly shooting on a b.a.r.t. train is now in to its second night. witnesses say it stood feet away when it happened. maria medina spoke to one witness who was nearly shot. >> reporter: cell phone video shows the fear on passengers' faces moments after yesterday's fatal shooting on a b.a.r.t. train. moore says he stood just a few steps away from the victim. >> it happened so quick. >> reporter: when the doors opened and the gunmen began to shoot. >> start shooting, and then he got out the b.a.r.t. and ran. >> reporter: witnesses say they don't know whether there was a confrontation before the shooter opened fire several times. one of the bullets -- >> i thought i got hit. >> reporter: lubbock says nearly hit him. >> i never got shot before so i thought i got shot. i looked at my arm and there was a hole. >> reporter: many described the scene as chaotic.

passengers either ran or ducked for cover. brad chapin recorded this cell phone video from a nearby train a. day after the murder, it appeared back to normal at the station. for those who witnessed the shooting, the images will remain. he said he wasn't even supposed to be on that train, a mistake he says he made that could have cost him his life. >> scared, terrified. my heart goes out to the family that lost their child. that boy's parents now have to bury their child. >> reporter: in oakland, maria medina, kpix 5. in vallejo a man was found shot to death. police received several calls after 7:00 of people hearing gunshots. when the police arrived they found a 22-year-old's body in the street. no arrests have been made there. daly city police are on the lookout for a woman who hit an officer with her car in a dramatic getaway, officers say they went to arrest 25-year-old

denise davis at her home on friday for an outstanding vehicular assault charge and that's when they say she jumped in her car and ran it straight toward police. one officer was hit. he is expected to be okay. back lash tonight over sean penn's interview that may have helped lead to the arrest of the notorious drug king pin joaquin el chapo guzman. >> he got the get because he's a celebrity. sean penn writes that he used disposal cell phones, burners they call them, to set up the interview. then he flew to mexico to meet el chapo in person. now we know the mexican government was apparently tracking the actor which eventually led to the drug lord's arrest. >> reporter: double oscar winner sean penn was acting as a guest reporter for rolling stone magazine when he got an exclusive interview with mexico's most notorious drug

lord, joaquin guzman, also known as el chapo, claims he's not an especially violent man. mexican officials say it was this secret meeting in october that led him to the hideaway ranch and eventually arrested the narco boston friday. penn met el chapo through mexican actress kate del castillo who says el chapo was interested in having a film made about his life. he admitted he was the biggest drug dealer in the world and that he had sent engineers to germany to learn how to build those tunnels he used to escape from maximum security prison. there was no mention of the kidnapping, torture and murder associated with his car -- cartel. he takes no responsibility for problems associated with the drug trade. >> do you think it's true you're responsible for the high level of drug addiction or the

fact there are so many drugs in the world? >> no, that's false. because the day i don't exist it's not going to decrease in any way at all. drug trafficking? that's false. >> there is outrage from several quarters tonight. this is tomorrow's front page of the new york post. el jerko pen pals with drug lord on the run. some are upset that sean penn met with him, that he seemed to glorify him. the journalistic community is angry at the terms of the interview. penn is an activist. he agreed to let el chapo approve the finished article. that's an absolute no-no in reporting. joe vazquez, kpix 5. u.s. bomber capable of unloading a nuclear missile was decan employed to south korea today. it's a direct reaction to north korea's reaction that it's carried out its fourth nuclear test.

the b52 bomber flew from guam to asan around noon today. president obama is set to give his final state of the union address tuesday. usually the speech focuses on policy proposals from the president. according to the white house, this one will be looking to the future. one hint is it will be looking beyond the upcoming election. another clue, the white house says the speech is bigger than any policy initiative or new bill in congress. you can watch the state of the union tuesday here on kpix 5. spencer stone is among those invited to attend the state of the union address. the air force staff sergeant from sacramento helped stop a terrorist attack on a train headed to paris. stone was hurt as he helped two friends take down the gunman. by midweek we might know whether or not the raiders are staying in oakland or packing their bags for los angeles. the nfl is set to hold meetings starting on tuesday in houston and a vote on relocation is

expected. the raiders want to move to los angeles and share a stadium with the san diego chargers. the st. louis rams have also asked to move to l.a. which they abandoned in the '90s. two teams are expected to be given the green light. kpix 5 christin ayers will be reporting live from houston on this week's crucial meetings. you can look for her reports starting tuesday. the bike and pedestrian path on the new bay bridge span might miss its big opening later this year. most of the construction is done, but now there are safety questions about a planned observation deck near the end of the path at yorba buena island. cal trans is looking in to whether the steel supports need to be stronger. if they choose to redesign it, it will not open this summer as planned. governor jerry brown wants to fix california's crumbling roadways. we'll pay for it of course with a little item slipped in to the budget.

but it's not going to happen without a fight. >> reporter: lawmakers put the brakes on the proposal last year but it's being revved up again. the governor wants to add a $65 fee to your vehicle registration to fix your roads and bridges. >> the roads we have to deal with. they cost money. >> reporter: the fee would apply to all cars, trucks, and motorcycles raising about $2 billion a year. >> why do we need more costs to get from a to b? >> reporter: californians already pay about 40 cents a gallon in state taxes and fees for gas. but some drivers don't. >> those that have vehicles that don't have any gasoline aren't paying the gas tax and they're getting to use our roads. >> reporter: catharine baker spoke proposed a so-called tesla tax. >> we're taking a lot from california's transportation. we're not spending it very well. we need to reform and not rely on new revenue strength. >> reporter: she's a republican

setting up for another battle about how much drivers should pay. >> i don't want to have to spend more than i already do. >> reporter: the destination, better roadways. the route, unclear. >> anything we can do to make the infrastructure better is good. >> the governor's office says this $65 fee would be, quote, ongoing, which means we could be paying it every year for the rest of our lives. >> the fee would go in to effect in a year if the budget is approved. your tax dollars are hard at work in california's classrooms. soaring revenues have pushed education spending back to its level prior to the great recession. the governor's latest budget plan will put spending per student at more than $10,000 a year but the state is still lagging behind the rest of the country. california continues to rank near the bottom when it comes to school spending and student-teacher ratios. mark zuckerberg is making his stance on vaccines known on where else but facebook. the social media ceo posted this

♪ "the revenant." the movie took home the awa a big night for the golden globes for the revenant. >> the movie took home the award for best picture in the drama category but it wasn't done. it also won for best director and leonardo dicaprio received the best actor in a drama for his role in the movie. bri larson won best actress in a drama for her leading role in "room." reporter suzanne marques takes us to los angeles. >> reporter: tinseltown turned out in all of their gorgeous and glamorous glory for the golden globes red carpet at the beverly hilton in beverly hills. >> it's pandemonium here. everywhere you turn everyone looks beautiful.

responsible for anything he says. >> jennifer lawrence and j-lo absolutely looked gorgeous. i have to say my two favorites with leonardo dicaprio who even walking down the red carpet, it was like he had already won. lady gaga won her very first golden globe channeling marilyn monroe. you can't go wrong with a classic. suzanne marques, kpix 5. >> the new star wars movie had another box office blowout. the force awakened banked another $41 million, making it the third best selling movie of all time. number two spot this weekend went to the revenant. ranked in $38 million. followed by will ferrell's comedy, daddy's home. the forest reeled in $14 million. an early morning 5k and 10k race helped kick off the super bowl festivities.

today's event was called run to the road to super bowl 50. they ran to the 50-yard line of levi's stadium. runners of all ages participated. the field was full but the stands were largely empty. soon they'll be packed with super bowl fans though. >> my dad likes football. i don't watch it. i don't even know why people play it. i know that it's an awesome sport and i'm on my team's field so that's even better. >> the finish line allowed runners for just a moment to feel like true nfl players out on the gridiron. we're now just 27 days away from the big game which airs right here on kpix 5, your home for super bowl 50. we've got mostly cloudy skies tonight but not much in the way of rain. the kpix 5 hi-def doppler is showing a few showers have mostly evaporated. cloudy skies and not much on the way, not until tuesday night. you can see a few popup showers but that's about it.

high surf advisory is posted for tomorrow with a long period westerly swell to 14 feet and sneaker waves likely. be careful if you're headed out. the numbers, 49 degrees in concord right now. san jose, 52. and in san francisco, 52 as well. here's what's happening split jet. out in the pacific it's dividing the energy of all the systems coming to the west coast. it alsodoesn't help that there'a fairly bronco negursky like ridge that's deflecting it. by the time it gets here nothing more than showers. might be a few tomorrow morning but not much. so the next time we expect something to really come in is going to be midnight tuesday and then early wednesday morning. wednesday looks wet. that's about the only day it's really looking wet this week. by noon tomorrow you can see we've got mostly cloudy skies but the little green echo

suggesting rain are not here until we approach tuesday evening. there's tuesday at 8:00. you can see showers beginning to move in to sonoma county then wham, there it goes. early morning hours of wednesday. this is wednesday midday. after that, scattered showers. wednesday looks wet. in terms of rain totals between now and tomorrow night, a couple hundredths of an inch of rain. now let's go from monday to tuesday. don't add much, do we? but watch what happens from tuesday at 10:00 at night until wednesday evening. then we finally pick up the rain. almost 2 inches in ukiah and half an inch in san francisco. headlines then mostly dry through tuesday night. rain and wind early wednesday then mostly dry thursday through saturday. the question mark because we frankly don't know. it's looking that way. latter half of the week you'll have to check in with mr. deanno. overnight lows, mostly mid 40s.

powerball lottery yesterday here we there were plenty of losers but nobody won the powerball lottery yesterday so here we go. at least $1.3 billion will be up for grabs in the next drawing on wednesday. by far it will be the largest lottery jackpot in the history of the united states. could get even larger depending on the ticket sales between now and wednesday. you'll need a little bit of luck to cash in. the odds of hitting all six numbers is 1 in 292 million. you have a better chance, i'm sorry to say, of being hit by an asteroid. let's hope that doesn't happen. somebody in the bay area did have some luck in last night's drawing at a 7-eleven in fremont. they sold a ticket matching five of the six numbers. that's worth $780,000. not a bad consolation prize for coming up one number short. bigger payout for a woman who bought a ticket in san jose. she had five of the six numbers in a drawing earlier in the week.

she'll get $1.9 million. the store that sold the ticket gets a $9500 bonus. you could buy a car with all that cash, maybe a tesla. this weekend some tesla owners got software that enables the cars to park themselves. here's how it works. owners of model s sedans and model x suvs can line up their cars up to 33 feet from where they want to park. the driver waves the key fob and the car will do the rest. they can even leave the parking space on command. tesla says the feature should only be used on private property. it's hard to tell in the bay area, but gas prices just keep dropping. this week the national average price per gallon dipped to $2.05. that's 15 cents less than this time a year ago. the cheapest gas is in st. louis at $1.64. the priciest is los angeles at $3.01. prices may continue to drop as crude oil costs go down and refineries run at a higher rate.

the new york state fairgrous known for hundreds gathered to watch the grand slam implosion. the aging grandstand was torn down as part of a $50 million fair ground revitalization project. and another explosive scene.

this one at volcano's national park on hawaii's big island. a rock fall at the kilauea volcano plunged in to a lava lake crater causing this massive explosion. it happened early friday morning. volcano watchers say explosions like this occur more frequently when the lava lake level is relatively high. this one does not threaten any nearby communities. adding to his list of papal accomplishments, pope francis is now a published author. the first book of pope francis's papacy will be released in 86 complaints on tuesday. according to had associated press, the overarching theme of the book is mercy. we'll be right back. ,,,,
