you can see the dow is down about 364 points. at its lowest today it was down 536 points. it's part of a wild week on wall street. monday and tuesday it was up but midweek a huge sell-off down 3 4. there was some recovery yesterday with a more than 200 point gain but now we are back in the red in a big way. and kcbs radio's financial reporter jason brooks joins us now. jason, what's causing such a steep drop. >> reporter: frank and michelle, it's not pretty. it's not easy to look at our retirement accounts now. the dow and nasdaq each on pace for the worst month since the financial crisis back in 2008. two main concerns for investors right now. china and oil. we have seen china's economy continue to slow over the past year. the shanghai exchange has been pummeled as a result. it's now 20% lower than its high last summer.

that so figuresly puts it into -- that officially puts it into bear territory and there are nears beijing isn't letting on how bad their economy is doing. in a number of moves to pump up the stock market, it has failed to materialize. the price of oil closed below $30 today for the first time since november 2003. that's great for us as we pay for gas. but for the energy industry it's bad news. stocks are falling for companies like chevron and job cuts have been heavy. according to analysts out there, we have lost about 250,000 jobs in the energy sector over the past year due to low oil prices. >> jason, what about the u.s. economy? what role is that playing in all of this? >> the u.s. economy has been doing fairly well. we have seen that with strong job growth. however, one worrisome sign for investors at least today is that retail sales in december fell by 1/10 of a percent. typically december is when most retailers do a lot of their

heavy lifting during the holidays. but consumers are being a little tighter with their money saving a bit more and plus, you have the millennials who are not spending money on the same things that older generations have done. instead, spending more money on experiences and that's certainly impacting the economy and as a result the stock market. >> thank you, jason brooks from kcbs news. two bay area walmart stores are among hundreds the retailer is closing in a bid to cut costs. the oakland store will shut sunday and a store in san jose closes at the end of the month. the chain plans to close 269 stores worldwide about half of them in the u.s. the closures will affect 16,000 workers. chipotle has been fighting an uphill battle since a string of food poisoning outbreaks and now they are fighting back. kpix 5's anne makovec is live in san francisco with the latest on how they plan on regaining the public trust. >> reporter: it is the lunchtime rush or had it should

be here at this chipotle near union square, but not much of a line inside. still, there are some customers willing to take a chance on chipotle. >> i honestly love chipotle. >> reporter: but fans of the fast food mexican joint will have to live without for a few hours on february 8. the chain is shutting down almost 2,000 locations to hold a companywide meeting on food safety. >> you can train people but they will still -- it really depends on the individual. >> reporter: more than 350 people have gotten sick after eating at chipotle since october. the chain has been linked to outbreaks of both e. coli and norovirus. the company has yet to confirm the cause. >> what are the qualifications that anything else is going to come out of that organization is going to be safe? >> reporter: chipotle has seen its stock price tank losing nearly a third of its value but the ceo says their new policies will quote put us 10 to 15 years ahead of industry norms

and i believe this will be the safest restaurant to eat at. though many people are staying away. >> i certainly would not go. >> reporter: others are willing to give them a second chance. >> it might just be one good weekend with a couple of drinks and next thing you know, i would be at chipotle. >> reporter: you never know what happens in that circumstance. they are trying to win back customers who may have lost their appetites. live in san francisco, anne makovec, kpix 5. today in the south bay a bicyclist dies after getting hit by a truck. kpix 5's kiet do reports it wasn't the initial hit that killed him. >> reporter: a grim scene in the early-morning hours in downtown san jose. on santa clara street at delmas avenue a driver hit a man on a bike and left him for dead. >> the suspect vehicle the white truck veered -- opposing lanes of traffic hopped up on the sidewalk potentially either hitting or clipping the individual who is riding a

bicycle. >> reporter: the victim was knocked off his bike but didn't actually go down. then get this. witnesses say the driver put the truck in reverse backed up hit the man again and then ran him over. >> we think when the suspect vehicle went to flee the scene he put it in reverse and then ran over the victim one more time. so it isn't an intentional act. we don't know if he was doing that to cause harm or just fleeing the scene. >> reporter: the victim is a 60- year-old homeless man. they are look for a white chevy pickup with items in the bed of the truck and damage on the driver's side panel. in san jose, kiet do, kpix 5. even though the raiders aren't going to l.a. their future is uncertainty. the coliseum authority will hold a closed-door meeting to discuss a one-year lease extension for next season. money disputes and the deteriorating coliseum has the owner mark davis worried to

keep the team in oakland. the lawmakers hope the raiders will stay loyal to their fans. >> my pressures is for them to stay -- my preference for them is to stay in oakland. >> we have before us a moment of opportunity and it's up to us to work together both with the sports teams and with the community stakeholders to really develop a strong plan for the coliseum. >> so if the raiders leave next season they would have to file a completely new relocation application. they would also need league approval. 12 people are missing after two military helicopters collided midair near hawaii. it happened off the north shore of oahu. the two choppers were taking part in a nighttime training mission when something went wrong. according to the coast guard, search-and-rescue efforts are challenging because of the high surf. 40-foot waves broke all along the debris field. >> around 11:30 i heard the big explosion, boom! but it was a little different.

and, um, then i heard another one shortly after. it kind of spontaneous boom! and then another boom! >> rescue crews say they found a liferaft floating in the wreckage but no one was on board. actor sean penn breaking his silence about his rolling stone interview with wanted druglord "el chapo." he spoke with charlie rose for sunday's edition of "60 minutes" and kenneth craig has a preview. >> there is this myth about the visit that we made. >> reporter: sean penn tells charlie rose that he does not believe his october interview with joaquin "el chapo" guzman led to the druglord's capture last week. >> so as far as now, you had nothing to do -- and your visit had nothing to do with his recapture? >> the mexican government they were clearly very humiliated by the notion that someone found him before they did. well, nobody found him before they did. we didn't -- we're not smarter

particular piece of information applies also to kitties. when you're picking it out whether you get it from a shelter or breeder, it should be very clean the facility, pristine, and the pet should have no eye or nose discharge. that's very important. you want them to be lively. you don't want them sitting back in the corner. it's the rare puppy or kitten that's sitting in the way back of the corner, they look cute but they could grow up to be a "fear biter." if you are going to look at a litter. look at them run and the ones behind are the perfect one. >> if you fall in love but it's the one in the corner. >> well -- i personally, um, it's just rare that that one turns out to be like a really good pet and so i probably wouldn't recommend that. >> okay. >> you have to do a lot of work with that one. and have them examined by a vet
