over 9 inches has fallen in the north coast over the weekend. in to the bay area right now hi-def doppler shows much of this does not reach the south bay. not much. we'll pull back to show you the heaviest cells are offshore or over the north and east because. a good deal of it is coming down over a perpetual trouble spot where highway 1 branches off in to 101 and leads in to mill valley. maria medina is standing by live with a litany of warnings. >> it's been raining heavily and steadily here for the last few hours. although this parking lot hasn't flooded just yet, take a look at the sign behind me. warning of the high tide flooding. take a look at video we shot not too long ago. locals know this park and ride can flood with high tide and heavy rains but this is just the beginning of what's to come with the king tide rolling in and the heavy rain supposed to continue. things can get pretty ugly here. we spoke to a couple locals about what they've seen out here and here's what they've had to

say. >> i've seen it get up probably to a door handle at least. that's on a high tide with rain and a small car. >> the whole area has sunk so it's not just the parking lot. it's the road itself which makes it impassible with the king tides. >> and so again it hasn't flooded in this parking lot just yet but we're starting to see the water collect nearby streets and back out here live there are a lot of cars parked in that back parking lot. you can see some people being dropped off by the airport or behind me. hopefully those drivers come back to their cars before things get pretty bad out here. live in mill valley, maria medina, kpix 5. >> the king tides are going to build in to the week, monday and tuesday even higher. there's already trouble in the peninsula tonight. this is at beach and santa theresa boulevard on the water. a sinkhole has opened up and crews are working to plug it with

boulders and dirt. part of the sidewalk has crumbled at that point. the national weather service has issued a flash flood watch for the burn areas of lake and napa counties. those are the areas burned by the valley and rocky fires last summer. the vegetation burned away making the ground susceptible to mudslides tonight. >> today we found people preparing for that possible flooding in napa. the sandbags station outside memorial stadium was busy. one woman says she's trying to protect her home from a creek and ditch that have flooded in the past. >> i already have sandbags out but i'm getting extra to put around the doors and things just in case. >> the sand bag station is self-service so you'll need to bring a surveillance and your own bag. in marin county, the downpours are helping to replenish reservoirs. we'll have more on that story in just a few minutes. in other news, freedom tonight for several americans including a bay area man once held hostage in iran. they were allowed to leave as part of a

prisoner exchange with the u.s. cbs reporter wendy gillette shows us the start to their long awaited homecoming. >> reporter: a swiss air force plane carrying three americans who had been imprisoned in iran landed safely in geneva sunday. this picture posted on a presidential envoy twitter account is the first of washington post reporter jason rezaian as a free man. he and two others flew to a military hospital in germany where they're being evaluated. president obama held a news conference at the white house sunday morning. >> today we're united in welcoming home sons and husbands and brothers who have endured an absolute nightmare. >> reporter: the americans, along with one other man, roodsari, were part of a swap for seven iranians held or charged in the u.s. two of them, both iranian americans, were released from a federal detention center in houston early sunday. family members of the freed americans are planning

reunions of their own including the sister and brother-in-law of hecmani, a former marine. they're travelling to frankfurt where they'll see their relative for the first time since 2011. >> everything is so surreal. amir called last night to tell us he's on his way. >> reporter: another american, student matthew trevesick, was freed as part of a separate agreement and is on his way home. secret talks to free the americans began 14 months ago over about a dozen meetings. freed prisoner jason rezaian grew up in marin county. today family members issued a statement calling his release the most fabulous news we've heard in a very, very long time. they went on to say he should be back in the u.s. next week and there will be a huge paerlt at that time -- a huge party at that time. several marines are missing

from baghdad. reports indicate three american contractors were kidnapped from the capitol and so far no one has claimed responsibility. there's been a surge in isis attacks recently in baghdad. a search and rescue team from the marin county sheriff's department is headed to the sierra to help look for a missing ski instructor. 23-year-old carson may disappeared after being separated from his brother while skiing at sugar bowl. search teams have been combing an out of bounds area on the slopes where cell phone pings were held yesterday. may is an experienced skier. falling snow and sleet have made the search difficult. in just a few minutes actor sean penn will be setting the record straight in a 60 minutes interview with charlie rose, he explains how he got in touch with the notorious drug lord el chapo months before his capture. >> the mexican government, they were clearly very humiliated by

it happened at abo two men are on the loose after robbing a gas station in south san francisco. it happened yesterday on airport boulevard near highway 101. investigators say the suspects asked the lone attendant for change. then they charged at the worker once the register was open and took off with the cash. in about 20 minutes oakland's only walmart will close its doors for good. the walmart near the oakland airport is one of about 270 stores worldwide that are shutting down. retailers nearby say they worry the closure will strip them of business and some

shoppers say without that walmart they'll be left with a food desert. >> very sad about it because a lot of people don't have grocery stores to shop for food. >> a long time ago we had a pack and save all over there. they all seem to close in this area. >> walmart says its decision to roll back hundreds of stores is financial. some city leaders say oakland's recent minimum wage hike from $9 to $12.25 might be the reason. with the closure, oakland city coffers will lose much needed tax revenue. mayor libby schaaf says oakland can quickly put the site to new use. a successful satellite launch, but not everything went off without a hit. the part of the operation that didn't go as planned. >> from high surf to heavy rain, a stormy night continues to unwind. a rocket lifted off this mog from vandenberg air force b,

sunday walk along san francisco's embarcadero. people were armed with umbrellas and jackets as the heavier rain moved in tonight which we'll cover in just a minute. >> today's rain is a welcome sight for people living in the north bay. john ramos reports for many the downpours are bringing cheers rather than groans. >> reporter: the heavy clouds moving in to the bay area seemed like more of a promise than a threat. true, the park and ride in mill valley was closed for possible flooding and this marin fire station near mount tam offered materials to make sandbags but no one in the north bay was complaining. >> is it nice to have a storm to prepare for these days? >> definitely. we have a young daughter and trying to tell her about rain, about what to prepare for. >> reporter: that's right. bob brought his 2-year-old daughter delaura for a hike in the watershed to show her what rain is like. >> one of the first times for her so it's very strange having that experience. but happy to have it back. >> reporter: in fact something down right giddy about the

weather. panoramic highway may not have had much of a panorama today but the parking lot was full as hikers ventured out to view nature in all of its green dripping glory. >> i feel like we've been a couple years talking about water and wishing for it and wanting the rain so i'm actually really excited. >> reporter: marin's water system relies on frequent rainstorms on mount tam to refill its series of small reservoirs but it's been a while since hikers heard this sound. the sound of water pouring out of the overflow spillway in to the creek below. of course the kraut is far from -- the drought is far from over but a soggy day like this is a good reminder not to take something so precious for granted. >> normally people just complain when it rains but now they don't. >> reporter: in marin county, john ramos, kpix 5. >> the marin water district is unique in that it relies solely

on water running to supply drinking water to its customers. rain is coming down and the surf is coming up along the california shoreline with a heavy swell and surfers love it. down there in ventura county, highway 101 between santa barbara and thousand oaks. they were taking to the waves out there. as we've stirred up the surf to the point of it being a high surf warning with rip tides and sneaker waves a real problem tonight and through tomorrow morning. the immediate challenge is the rain as we look high from the transamerica pyramid to the bay bridge and the numbers right now, not the big story. fairly balmy night by january standards. temperatures near 60 degrees. it's the rain that will make headlines. spreading from vallejo through san francisco and offshore from the peninsula coastline. it will all sink south overnight. right now san jose, cupertino mostly in the rain shadow.

but the santa cruz mountains could have an inch and a half of rain. right now some of the heavier cells are in the north bay across the golden gate bridge where maria medina was reporting in southern marin. this is what we can expect. the cold front is going to press south so at midnight tonight we'll finally begin to clear it up in santa rosa but it will reach the south bay in the next four or five hours so you can expect to get wet where you've not much yet. then as monday comes in, this is right around the commute, 8:00 tomorrow morning, cloudy skies. so tomorrow just a few scattered light showers. atmosphere is prime so it wouldn't take much to squeeze a little moisture out of t. now we roll-- it. now we roll to tuesday. we begin to clear it out for wednesday. wednesday is a break. we won't get any rain wednesday but between now and then, we've got a good deal to deal with between now and 5:00.

the brunt is falling overnight. about an inch and 1/3rd in santa cruz. same for santa rosa. san francisco, about .6 an inch. so pretty good douser but then the second wave comes through. 2 and 2/3rds in santa rosa. 2.3 in san rafael. more than 2 inches in the santa cruz mountains. pretty good soaker between now and tuesday midday. beginning with tonight, flash flood watches. 1.5 to 2 inches of rain up top. the threat is rock slides, mud fall. be careful heading out. also the high surf warning. winter storm warnings posted in the mountains. visibility is low. 5 to 10 inches of snow about 7,000 feet. so the rain will spread south tonight. we'll get a few showers tomorrow. more rain coming in on tuesday. that's the approach to the toll plaza on the richmond bridge. break wednesday. there will be

more rain on friday. overnight lows tonight, only in the low 50s. sun up tomorrow at 7:24. highs tomorrow near 60 degrees. extended forecast calls for martin luther king, jr. day. a few showers around but not much. more comes in on tuesday. especially tuesday morning. break on wednesday and then latter half of the week, more rain comes in especially on friday before getting a bit of an extended break on saturday and sunday. we'll have all the latest at 11:00 tonight. it's going to be a wet night in the bay area. >> the good news is we have three weeks to dry out because that's when the super bowl is at levi's stadium. and the super bowl road to it is down to four teams tonight. who still has a chance to come to levi's stadium? ,,,,,,

fitzgerald scored from one yard out. pittsburgh led 7-6. early 3rd quarter , steelers leading 10-9. roethlisberger avoids the pressure. martavius bryant on the receiving end, 52-yard gain. that set up another pittsburgh field goal and they led 39-9 so 10 minutes left in the game. it's now 13-12. pittsburgh driving and here's the turning point in the game. recovered by denver's demarcus ware who had a monster game. off the turnover, 7-minute drive capped off by cj anderson. broncos take a 20-13 lead after a 2-point conversion. next possession under 2 minutes left. steelers facing a 4th and 5 but roethlisberger sacked by ware giving denver the ball. broncos got a field goal to go up by 10. they win and they will face tom brady and the patriots in the afc championship game. >> next week your fourth afc championship against tom brady. what can we expect for that one?
