your realtime captioner is linda marie macdonald. we're following two breaking news stories this afternoon. the stock market down hundreds of points yet again and experts are blaming a drop in crude oil prices. >> but first, breaking news out of martinez where several train

cars have derailed near highway 680. kpix 5's anne makovec is live at the scene and anne, we understand the train was carrying some sort of chemical. >> reporter: from what we understand, it is spent sulfuric acid. and you can see these three cars still here behind me. 680 right above them. the acid is not leaking but hazmat crews are monitoring the area under the freeway in martinez. these are union pacific tanker cars. you can see three of them one almost completely on its side. the railcars were headed to the shell refinery in martinez to be processed for further use. nobody was injured in the derailment. that's the good news. no leakage of chemicals. but these train cars need to be righted and then they need to be moved out. so we are waiting for more information this afternoon from the railroad, from shell refinery, and from county hazmat teams but you can see it's a work in progress.

live in martinez, anne makevoc, kpix 5. the other big story this noon hour, a stock market meltdown! the dow jones took a huge hit right at the start of the day and still hasn't recovered. here's a look at the big board and we can see that the dow is down as we said in the hundreds. look at that. 356 points! kcbs radio's financial reporter jason brooks has been track the downward trend and, jason, how long can we expect this to continue? >> michelle, the -- the scary answer is that nobody knows! that's the thing with the stock market. very hard to predict what's going to happen next. even though the numbers are ugly, that's decent improvement from earlier when it was down well over 500 points. and again, analysts are chalking this up to the big drop in oil prices, crude closing below $27 today for the first time since may of 2003. that is having an immediate impact on the energy industry. stocks in companies like chevron and others are falling. that's resulting in jobs being

lost in the industry but it's also raising concerns about the health of the global economy. falling oil prices can be an indicator that demand is not so strong. in particular, coming from china. that's been one of the other big factors in the stock market plunge. not a whole lot of good news out there. the stock market off to its worst ever start for a new year, january on pace to be one of the worst januaries ever in the stock market's history. michelle. >> it seems like it. kcbs radio's financial reporter jason brooks, thank you. the investigation into what caused yesterday's deadly greyhound bus crash in san jose is just beginning. kpix 5 reporter kiet do has the latest from gilroy where the manage long distance bus was towed. kiet. >> reporter: good afternoon. we're live here at the towing company on monterey highway in gilroy where in just the past half-hour, about a dozen state and federal investigators have arrived on scene. they tell us they will have an update at 2 p.m. here at the scene later today. in the meantime the coroner has also released the name of the

second victim. her name is maria ortiz velazquez, 76 years old from salinas. now sits in the tow yard in gilroy, the focus of not one but two teams from the chp and the ntsb. they are running parallel investigations trying to figure out what this man, 58-year-old gary bonslater from victorville, was doing. witnesses say he was nodding off at the wheel and he had pulled over in gilroy to get coffee to stay away wake. in fact bonslater even told authorities he was exhausted. the investigators will put together a 24-hour profile to determine what bonslater was doing in the days leading up to the crash. meanwhile, anen to john al vera has been waiting to view his mother's body at the morgue. >> i asked them in i could see my mother today. they said i have to wait until tomorrow. it's painful painful. hurtful. >> reporter: fely olivera was likely asleep when the bus

overturned yesterday on the connector from 101 to 85 north. she chose the red eye from southern california to make it back in time for a doctors appointment. when we told antonio the driver fell asleep at the wheel he said this. >> i don't have any, you know, like hate towards the driver. it's an accident. no one wanted it to happen. >> reporter: and we are back here live at the scene where again investigators tell us they will have a press conference at 2 p.m. to give us a full update on this investigation. according to dmv records, the driver, bonslater, had a valid license and also a clean driving record. live in gilroy, kiet do, kpix 5. two state lawmakers are pushing to increase safety regulations on sightseeing buses. that follows recent tour bus accidents including one that injured 20 people in november in san francisco. the bill will be introduced today by assemblyman phil ting and david chiu and would give

them more power to regulate buses. they are currently under state jurisdiction. another bill would beef upstate inspections of tour bus operators. two people are under arrest after an attempted burglary sparked a police shooting. it started around 3 a.m. when a resident interrupted a burglar on green oak court in san mateo. police say a female suspect tried to run down an arriving officer. the officer fired and missed. she was then arrested. a "shelter in place" followed as officers searched for a second suspect. he was arrested a few hours later. police in south san francisco are searching for an attempted murder suspect. the 28-year-old allegedly got into an argument with another man near grand avenue yesterday. the other man says the man shot him as he drove away. the man was unhurt. livermore police want your help finding this suspected package thief. she poked around the bushes of this altamar way home before swiping a package off the

porch. police say it happened last wednesday afternoon around 2:00. a hoverboard being blamed for sparking a house fire that killed two dogs. santa rosa fire crews responded to the fire last night. when they arrived flames could be seen shooting out of the front of the house on east foothill drive. nobody was home at the time but firefighters located two dogs in the home. efforts to revive them were not successful. although the exact cause of the fire is unknown, a hoverboard was located in the area of where that fire got started. freed "washington post" reporter is adjusting to life outside captivity. the 39-year-old seen here in germany was jailed for 18 months in iraq. he was convicted of espionage. he was one of four americans freed over the weekend as part of a negotiated prisoner swap. in a posted statement the man said hoped to return to his work as the tehran correspondent for the post. his statement read, in part, i spent a lot of life writing

about the united states and iran and i never imagined and never wanted to become a part of the story, particularly at such an extraordinary moment. ." militants killed at least 20 people in pakistan at a university. attackers scaled the walls threw grenades and started shooting during a ceremony on campus, apparently to maximize casualties. a gun battle lasted for hours. there are conflicting claims about who committed at tack. it happened near a school where the taliban killed 145 people in december 2014. on to politics. gop presidential candidate donald trump celebrating a big boost to his campaign. ted cruz is not backing down. craig boswell takes us on the campaign trail. >> reporter: donald trump greeted a large crowd in norwalk, iowa, this morning looking for support less than two weeks before the state's caucus. >> if we win iowa, we're going to run the table.

>> reporter: trump's campaign for the gop presidential nomination got a big boost on tuesday when sarah palin endorsed him. >> sarah came along and she said, we love what's happening. it's a movement. >> reporter: palin supported ted cruz when he ran for senate in 2012 and cruz says he will always remain a big fan of the former alaska governor. cruz was out campaigning in new hampshire this morning and zeroed in on what he would do if elected. >> the first thing i intend to do is rescind every, single illegal unconstitutional executive action taken by this president. >> reporter: on the democratic side, hillary clinton is spending the day raising money. she holds a lead in the national polls over bernie sanders. but the vermont senator is ahead in new hampshire and hopes for a good turnout in iowa, as well. craig boswell, cbs news, washington. new 49ers head coach chip kelly just wrapped up his first news conference at levi's stadium. and the new coach has winning

san francisco like those commuter shuttles that haulm to and from work. today the bay area council many people live in san francisco like those commuter shuttles that bring them to and from work. today the bay area council released results of a poll gauging how san francisco voters felt about the shuttles. and it shows 62% are in favor of letting the shuttles operate in the city. and 83% believe the shuttling are helping relieve traffic and reduce air pollution. a new retrofit grant could help many in the bay area get quake ready. the earthquake program gives up to $3,000 in single-family homes with common structural issue. eligible homes were built before 1979 typically and have only a few steps above ground with a flimsy wood frame. registration starts today. a quake cottage is shaking hard in san francisco city hall. the mobile earthquake simple later all part of a

presentation for the brace and bolt grant. this one has special fasteners designed to hold steady in strong quakes. today uc regents are discussing how to accommodate 6500 more undergrads this year. the uptick in instate commissions comes in response about criticism from the rising numbering of students out of state being admitted into the system. out of state students pay triple the $12,000 annual tuition that californians pay. airlines are expected to report record profits from 2015. they are paying less for fuel but as cbs reporter kris van cleave shows us, passengers are still not getting a break on fares. >> all these fees they tack on after the advertised price. >> i think airfare is reasonable until they nickel and dime you to death. >> reporter: despite the industry near the bottom when it comes to customer satisfaction, u.s. airlines are having no problems finding customers. in the first three-quarters of last year, they made almost $18 billion in profits and during

that time, they were on pace to pass 2014's record of $3.5 billion in bag fees. their planes flew 85% full on average and the steep drop in oil prices helped fuel the big profits. tuesday, delta reported a record fourth quarter an annual income of $5.9 billion. just days earlier delta and four other carriers raised fares. >> i think it's very hard for passengers to understand why fares aren't going down when airlines are making so much money. but they have to remember that airlines are a business and the bottom line is the bottom line. >> reporter: the airline business is boom and bust. since 1990 the industry has land in the revved 11 times -- red 11 times. in 2005 they lost nearly $20 billion. >> when airlines are profitable, customers, communities and investors and employees win because they are reinvesting that money back into the business. >> reporter: the airlines say they created 10,000 new jobs

and on average, took possession of one new plane a day last year. airfare dropped 3% in 2015. kris van cleave, cbs news, virginia. we all know it's not cheap to get to movies. now the average ticket is at a high of $8.70. the national association of theater owners says prices run almost 5% compared to the same time last year. last year box office revenue hit $11.1 billion, a record. >> i paid over 12 bucks for my last movie. >> me, too. >> the average. >> i know. >> i was thinking that just a tub of popcorn with jalapenos is over 8 bucks. you don't want to be indoors today. the coast is trying to clear out. that's right. the coast is almost clear. as we take a bird's-eye view towards ocean beach, then as we climb up about 4200 feet from lick observatory towards the santa clara valley, you see

some high wispy thin cirrus clouds but otherwise, sun is shining there. this is a dramatic view from the mount vaca area. a low deck of clouds in the fog that's been stacking up over the valley. temperature-wise right now anywhere from 49 degrees in santa rosa where it's hard to scrub out from the areas of fog to 60 degrees in san jose that realized a high yesterday of 67. so we have had the areas of patchy fog. we also had the partly cloudy conditions. we have a dry day today and thursday. then another storm 11th one of the month of january. it's ready to move in. this is an active storm track, our winter particulate matter map there -- not -- particle map, i should say. what it's do is steering the storms one after another right into the city of san francisco. very active. we have had 11 storms stacked up against the state of california. this is the next one. i love it.

it's textbook perfect. you see the core of the center of the area of low pressure. this front will move in thursday and the core moves in by saturday with the wraparound moisture. here's the futurecast. this is your wednesday and you will notice it's a good day to go outside and enjoy the aafternoon with the mild temperatures. then here comes your thursday. becoming mostly cloudy, as the clouds roll in you will see the beginning of rain bands associated with that front in the northern bay area. the morning commute will be wet friday. scattered showers during the day and then rain saturday morning before we begin to dry saturday afternoon through sunday afternoon. meanwhile, currently 56 going up to 59 at the state capital. boy, it's pristine. it's already 60 in monterey. 40 degrees with sunshine in the high sierra. my pick run of the day sierra grande, lots of powder. on the south shore go to nevada

lamborghini. this caught fire after the valley revved the 700- horsepower engine too much. he put his head in his hands as people rushed to put out the flames. and you would, too. the italian roadster is worth about $400,000. my guess is the owner had a thing or two to say. >> ah, yeah. >> hello. >> a lot of money. >> wow. weather plays a big role in how a lot of vegetables and fruit grow. about today our fresh grocer tony tantillo shows us a tomato that doesn't need a lot of help from mother nature. >> reporter: well, today's tip of the day is going to be is going to be with hothouse tomatoes. in the market now, of course, your backyard tomatoes are gone and look how beautiful the tomatoes are. they are grown in hothouses so mother nature really doesn't take a play on the growing of these tomatoes. so in the hothouse they control the atmosphere. so they can pick them when they're ripe. full of sugar. that's why if you see them green it the market you don't buy it. that's a lazy grower and shipper. that's what i say.

and it has to be nice and red. so when you buy them, the redder the outside the better very important. free from any shriveling whatsoever and heavy for their size. store them on the counter never in the refrigerator. now, hothouse tomatoes are picked with the full sugar in them so shelf life only 5 days. that's it, on the counter. makes a wonderful salad, and it's a beautiful thing. ♪[ music ] ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
