live from the cbs bay area studios, this is kpix 5 news. now at 11:00, a super sized transformation underway. major work along the water front as the bay area gets ready to host super bowl 50. but not everyone got the memo. kpix 5 is live in san francisco where super bowl city is starting to take shape. >> reporter: yes, tonight the building has if you know. you can see -- begun. you can see just a skeleton of it at this point. this is the fan experience under construction. meanwhile streets all around san francisco are shut down and right now experiencing super bowl sized traffic jams. >> it's a hall mark day, a

milestone day. welcome to the future home of super bowl city. >> reporter: this is just the beginning. a mad dash the build a massive super bowl fan village inside the plaza. in one weeks time it will look like this. the center piece of fan energy zone with distractive gaming and -- interactive gaming. >> it's the technology, food and win, and culture. >> reporter: a football fan's dream, and a commuters worst nightmare. massive road closures that will last three weeks from the construction. right now no driving on washington street or beal street on the market, and no cars on howard between 3rd and 4th street. >> very busy out here today. >> driver that is didn't get the memo left standed and steamed. >> stuck here about 20 minutes for like four miles.

here's what's remaining under the street, and just underneath is the black ice you can't see, and that's why they don't want people out on the roads tonight or tomorrow. a major snowstorm is still hammering the northeast. the foot traffic in times square was noticeably quiet saturday night. they expect 30-inches of snow in the big apple. >> the rate of the snowstorm continues to be intense, between one and three inches per hour. >> reporter: major coastal flooding pushed water up the residents doorsteps in new jersey. philadelphia could get up to two feet of snow. >> well beyond the idea of winter wonderland. there's no romance to a blizzard in my mind. >> reporter: this bride was going to the chapel to get marry nod matter what after being stranded on the turnpike in pennsylvania, this basketball team is finally on the move. high winds caused blinding white out conditions near the

nation's capital. pickup trucks linked together had to tow a ladder truck out after a jam. snow is falling so fast crews can't clear roads, side streets are out of the question, and that could slow some 911 response times. >> our interest is in our public safety, being able to move the first responders, and getting the city back open. >> reporter: the storm also standed thousands of traverse, and flights were canceled and airports closed. the snowplows are out now in ner nest, but here's what's -- ear nest, but here's what's left behind, the black ice still attached to the roads, and this is why they want people to stay off the roads throughout the rest of this evening and into tomorrow. kpix 5. thank you. despite the mess on the east coast, flights are coming and going on time.

here's a live look at the san jose airport tonight, but just about every single flight to and from the northeast has been canceled. in all about 4300 flights are canceled nationwide. some wild weather a little closer to home. this video shot this afternoon in corning. it shows a possible funnel cloud. it appeared about 4:00 p.m., the same time a severe thunderstorm warning was put out for the area. the storm dumped some pretty large hail. corning is south of red bluff. calmer weather here in the bay area, but the powerful surf is putting homes along the coastline in danger. part of a cliff is crumbling away. >> reporter: this is the building city crews are watching closely. they're literally living on the edge of a bluff. but the people say they're know it and willing to take the risk. >> we could be here for another

enjoy the view from her window, and when the call comes to evacuate she'll be ready to go. >> >. all that really matters is my life and the animals. >> reporter: some apartments were shut down because they're unsafe to live in. city leaders plan to meet monday about the state of emergency. mix 5. and eerie site on the bay bridge, the deck rain and ice tiff lights dark for about -- decorative lights dark for about four hours. it didn't seem to effect traffic. no word on what caused the outage, and now the lights are back on. huge crowds of pro-life supporters hit the street, for the walk for life parade. mark kelly reports their mission is change the thinking that abortion is the answer. >> reporter: on and off showers today hardly campened the mood

run tonight. reporter greg mill three violent criminals that broke out of a southern california jail is still on the run tonight. they had a daring escape. >> reporter: dangerous men on the loose. >> i can't sit here and pinpoint a particular city for all three inmates. i can just tell you the investigators are spread out throughout southern california. >> reporter: 20-year-old than john facing murder charges,

another kidnapping and torture charges among others, and wong, 43 years old, facing an attempted murder change among others. they are in an area described as a dorm typesetting housing 68 inmates including the three, and here's how they got away. >> they cut through half inch steel bars to facilitate the escape. the evidence also suggests the inmates cut their way through the plumbing tunnels and ultimately gained access to an unsecure area of the roof. >> reporter: they repel down, and last seen yesterday morning, discovered missing 16 hours later. there was some sort of disturbance by other inmates, investigators believe they might have done it intentionally to distract guards so the three could get away. >> i won't two that far yet, but it appears based on that disturbance and the timing of things that that may have been

part of planning process. >> greg mills reporting. authorities say this is the first escape from that jail in the past 20 years. southern california gas has been ordered to permanently close and seal a leaking storage well that's been pouring gas into a los angeles neighborhood for months, and driven thousands of people from their homes. crews working since october to cap the leak. the ceo of the gas company says permanently shutting down the well is not the answer. >> what i'm sighing is, it's necessary to serve the resident that is live there as well as the 21 million consumers we serve. >> reporter: >> >. officials say they're close to fixing the leak. residence debilities say it's a health hazard and sickened many in the community. michael bloomberg might be close to entering the race for the white house. he'll enter in march as an

treacherous. >> reporter: i'm in montgomery county, pennsylvania with at least 22 inches of snow tonight. more than most people expected, but the story if pennsylvania is -- in pennsylvania is really on the turnpike near pittsburgh. 500 vehicles are stranded, motorists trapped for more than 12 hours. there's a team from a university, a basketball team, that's stuck on their bus. and they think they're going to be on the turnpike overnight, but pennsylvania's governor is vowing with the help of the national guard and state resources to get them and every other motorist stranded on the turnpike out of the area. the bottom line, the governor is vowing to get the people standed on that turnpike out of there within the next several hours. the massive snowstorm is causing problems for emergency personnel. a fire truck stuck in the snow in the nations capital. two good samaritans helped pull it out. and in richmond, virginia, a

police cruiser had to be dug out after sliding off the road and into a snow back. a passer by with a shovel came to the rescue. the bay area got a rainy start today. for what we can expect for the rest of the weekend here's julie. scattered showers tapering off, and we're in for an extended dry period. let's take a look at the satellite perspective, and talk about what to expect as we move on over the next several days: the area of low pressure to the east, a ridge in the pacific helps keep us dry throughout the extended forecast. showers, a maybe a few overnight tonight, and tomorrow in the north bay, but overall we're in store for an extended dry break. futurecast showing the showers throughout the day, and a few lingering overnight tonight. by tomorrow morning we'll see a lot of clear patches, combine that with low level moisture, and see dense patchy fog in the

morning. keep that in mind early tomorrow. advancing futurecast through sunday, mostly dry, overnight sunday into monday we do have a week disturbance to the north. could bring a few showers to the north bay, but most of us stay dry. in fact the southern half of the district likely going to stay pretty darn clear as well, not going to shelliest of cloud cover. -- see a lot of cloud cover. lingering showers tapering off tonight. mostly dry and mild tomorrow, then a dry break through midweek next week. not until the second half of the week we see the next chance of unsettled weather. high surf advisory expired tonight at 10:00 p.m. for all coastal locations. high temperatures in the 50s and 60s area wide for tomorrow, those showers you see there off in the distance, those are well to the north. we will billion staying mostly dry with just a chance of a few scattered showers in the north bay. and a look at the extended forecast shows just that. partly to mostly cloudy for
