will face off here i t now at 11:00, the stage is set for super bowl 50. the denver broncos and carolina panthers will face off here in the bay area. the big game is just two weeks from tonight and the excitement is building. good evening to you, i'm juliette goodrich. brian is off tonight. let's get right to sports director dennis o'donnell joining us now. we've got the match-up. pretty intriguing teams. >> such a study in contrast. you've got a 39-year-old quarterback against a 26-year-old quarterback. 39-year-old, it might be this man's last game as a pro. peyton manning. he's doing it with guile, experience, moxie, not much of an arm.

his best days are past him. this could be his last game ever at levi's stadium. they're really doing it with defense. they've got two book ends, von miller and demarcus ware. they pounded brady with pressure. a very un-brady-like performance. it's steph curry's hometown. the warriors will be in town. curry is going to be at this football game. more to the point, carolina is a much more balanced team than the patriots. their quarterback actually has time to throw. they didn't just beat arizona today, they dominated the team from start to finish. this team is balanced. they're just as good on defense as they are on offense. here's your bay area ties to the game. tj ward. cj is from cal. there's vernon davis. he's coming back to levi's stadium. ron rivera, he's the coach.

there are some of your local connections. but really it comes down to this. if you believed in the balanced football team, go with carolina. if you believe in fairy tales, go with peyton manning. what a better way than to ride off in the sunset with a super bowl win. tonight the experts in las vegas think the panthers will win. they're favored by four and a half points. but a lot of hearts are going with the broncos. the point spread opened at 5 and a half and the line has dropped by a point. super bowl city is rising fast. the fan village will take over several blocks right in the heart of san francisco. emily turner is live there tonight. she shows us what's in store for football fans. >> it's looking great and it's exciting to see because it's changing hour by hour. it's being built so fast. the guys needed to go home and get some

sleep because they have to be right back here at 7:00 in the morning. there's still plenty of work to be done. >> reporter: she's seen the work from the beginning and gave us a tour of the progress which changes with each new ride. >> we're definitely having fun with the whole event. >> reporter: this will be a tent for verizon. this is going to be a television set. it's all coming together nicely thanks to 13 hours of construction a day. 7:00 in the morning to 7:00 at night. most of the people we talked to building super bowl city are actually from out of town. many from new york. others as far away as england. >> we manufacture this building and bring it all over the place. >> reporter: higher security has been brought on to make sure

the curious stay out and everyone is safe. >> when a lot of extra people hit town and want to see a great city like san francisco, that can only be good news for us. all night people snapped photos and video of the progress, happy to be part of history. >> how cool is it to be apart of the super bowl? you don't care about our football. [ laughter ] >> so not an american football fan, but at least he was a good sport about it all. apparently according to one of the security guards keeping tabs on everything, these buildings behind me are supposed to be finished by tomorrow. who knows. there's a lot of work left to do but a lot of work can get done in a 13-hour day. emily turner, kpix 5. >> thank you. and the construction of super bowl city is already proving to be tough on traffic. several streets are

closed off and it's just the beginning. andria borba is live with what's promising to be a mess for drivers. >> traffic already started backing up this week. that's the reason why. one of the closures right here in san francisco starting causing traffic to start clog up already. >> reporter: brace yourself. thissome sunday. -- this is only sunday. it will be like a real life game of froger. >> oh, my gosh. this is ridiculous. i don't like this and i don't think anybody else does. >> reporter: with super bowl city sprouting up at justin herman plaza, market street, and the embarcadero, the anticipated super bowl 50 road closures have kicked in to gear. >> crazy. >> reporter: the southbound embarcadero closed, and those drivers are getting detoured on

to consistently plugged battery street. >> closures for super bowl city. >> oh, wow. >> we still have two more weeks of this. >> good luck with that. >> reporter: at 5:15 p.m., cars were so stacked up at sfmta was switching the battery signal by hand, trying to unlock the grid. >> keep it on green or change it. >> reporter: with 1 million visitors expected at super bowl city, you better buckle up. >> traffic from the embarcadero being swung around from washington street being sent up to battery. the real test will be tomorrow when people arrive back in the city for their work week. live in san francisco, andria borba, kpix 5. a live look now at levi's stadium where super bowl 50 will be played. lots of preparation going on there and throughout the south bay. tonight the mayor of santa clara has this message to officially welcome the two teams that will square off in super bowl 50.

jonathan tieu, bac duong and hossein nayeri may have spent weeks planning to escape the jail. the planning was meticulous says the sheriff. >> they cut their way through half-inch steel bars, through plumbing tunnels, and ultimately gained access to an unsecure area of the roof. from the roof the inmates repelled down to the ground. >> reporter: authorities say it's likely they used bed sheets and other clothing to fashion a makeshift rope. after what tools they used to escape, how they got them, all those questions got the same response. >> we're still looking in to that. >> reporter: they're also looking at whether a disturbance inside the jail just prior to the nightly head count may have been a ruse by other inmates to help them escape. now there's a more immediate concern. >> we've notified the victims of some of these crimes and the

people that investigated those crimes to ensure that everybody who was involved in these cases is safe. >> reporter: authorities don't believe they've left the country. they say tips have poured in, but so far no confirmed sightings. >> a $50,000 reward is being offered for information leading to the inmates' capture. a couple guys on the run in the sierra ended up begging to be caught. coming up, what had them calling 911 themselves? >> plus, the monster snowstorm is passed but the east coast is far from back to normal tonight. we'll show you the long road ahead as people start digging out. >> mostly dry and mild. the story really for the foreseeable future, just how long will we hold off that rain? in the sierra...,,,,,,,,,,,,

the sierra... turned into a rescue mission this weekend. a chase to catch some fugitives in the sierra turn in to a rescue mission this weekend. the circumstances that had them begging to be arrested. >> reporter: in the high sierra near kyburz, it start would swerving, but then -- >> two male occupants took off running. >> reporter: the two fugitives, derek deano, and kristen ceroslen, a parolee, took off running in to the woods. authorities say they found a 9

millimeter gun. >> in addition to the firearm there was at least three different types of controlled narcotics in the vehicle. methamphetamine, heroin, marijuana. >> reporter: the duo dashed down the canyon and crashed over the south fork of the american river. now wet and cold, they ignored a law enforcement warning to surrender with a winter storm in full force. by night fall, the fugitives were freezing and called 911 begging to be arrested. search and rescue teams from the el dorado county sheriff's office quickly joined the hunt. >> we knew based on the weather conditions that yes, there's a very high likelihood that they would not survive very long. >> reporter: the two men huddled together overnight to keep warm. then on saturday morning the s.w.a.t. team found them and they were transported across the river to a waiting ambulance for treatment. >> i've never seen two people happier to go to jail because they knew they would be dry and warm. a daunting cleanup effort is underway across the east

coast following a historic blizzard this weekend. cbs reporter craig boswell shows us the snowfall has shut down much of the nation's capital. >> reporter: the sun melted some of the 2 feet of snow that fell in washington, d.c. as the moon rises, temperatures are plummeting, creating dangerous conditions. a convoy of trucks from boston and other cities arrived sunday to help get the nation's capital moving again. >> we're bringing about 450 pieces of equipment from washington, d.c. >> reporter: cleanup crews are making it a priority in the district, asking residents to help with snow removal. >> senior citizens can't get out here and walk in t snow -- and walk in the snow like this. >> reporter: further up the coast, a full moon tide made a soggy mess in wildwood, new jersey. >> we had beautiful snow for all of a few hours before it became a river of icebergs. >> reporter: the epic nor'easter missed setting a new

record for total snowfall by a 10th of an inch. >> we need people off the streets for their own safety. we need people off the streets for the safety of others. >> reporter: mayor de blasio asked drivers to keep their cars parked. he canceled alternate side parking for the entire work week. that's how long it could take for things to get back to normal in many places. craig boswell, cbs news washington. >> take a look at this. time lapse video captures the snowfall in the washington, d.c. suburb of potomac, maryland. the reporting was started on friday just as the storm gained momentum and runs until late last night. the blizzard blitzed the washington redskins. underneath all that snow is the football team's indoor training facility. the storm caused the inflatable roof to collapse. they'll wait till the snow gets cleared and conditions improve before they repair it. a magnitude 7.1 earthquake rattled south central alaska today. the quake was largely felt in anchorage where it knocked down items from grocery

store shelves. several after shocks were reported. fortunately no one was hurt. the quake struck at about 1:30 a.m. alaska time. it was centered about 50 miles west of anchor point in kenai peninsula. four homes were destroyed and a natural gas explosion followed the earthquake. a busted pipe in the city of kenai forced the evacuation of an entire neighborhood. state officials say this is the largest earthquake to hit this part of alaska in decades. changes may be coming to the original plan for california's high speed rail project. the first segment of track laid down could be coming to the bay area. kpix 5's anne makovec explains why. >> this change in the plan could be a hail mary to allow high speed rail to gain some steam. >> reporter: california high speed rail officials are now

considering san jose to bakersfield as the first major stretch for service. that would mean scrapping the current plan that calls for an initial track between burbank and the central valley. the san jose to bakersfield segment would be less costly because it would not involve expensive tunnels. the bullet train is already a $68 billion project. voters approved it in 2008 with a $9 billion bond. the goal, to take passengers from san francisco and l.a. in two hours and 40 minutes. the first construction began in the fresno area in july. more than two years behind schedule. >> we'll know how practical this new plan is within a few weeks. that's when the state will unveil its new business plan for the project. that will be the most comprehensive update we've gotten on high speed rail in four years. in the news room, anne makovec, kpix 5. right now major stock markets in asia are starting the

week in positive territory, coming off the four-year lows they hit last week. the hang sang index is up. analysts credit a rebound in energy and oil prices. meanwhile, u.s. investors are hoping to continue the gains made last week after a rough start to the new year. twitter could be facing another leadership shakeup. the new york times reports some of the social media company's top executives are on their way out. they include the senior vice president of engineering, vice president of global media, and senior vice president of products. word on the street is it's all because of the beating tweeting's stock is taking. last year twitter rehired founder jack dorsey to try to get the company back on its feet. time now for our forecast. julie watts is in for brian hackney with a look at the work week ahead. >> we're starting off with a live look over levi's stadium

where we're seeing partly to mostly cloudy skies, depending on where you are, that pretty much remains the story for the foreseeable future. we aren't going to get any rain for most of the week. i want to start off with our seasonal rainfall totals. take a look at where we are compared to normal for this time of year. we're at 107% of normal in san francisco. 80% in oakland. 119% of normal in san jose and 99% of normal in santa rosa. keep in mind this is just the beginning. this is not going to relieve us of the drought but it's a very good start and makes us feel a little bit better about the extended dry break we're headed in to for the next five days or so. from the satellite perspective let me show you why. we have an upper level bridge building, high pressure building over the pacific. as high pressure builds so do our temperatures. a gradual warming trend in store over the next few days. notice we do have a weak disturbance to our north, bringing showers to the pacific northwest. the extreme northern portions of our

region could see a couple of stray showers over the next 24 hours or so. i want to show you on futurecast. mostly clear for most of us. watch the top of your screen. notice showers passing to our north. we can't rule out a few scattered showers for our north bay locations. probably north of santa rosa. keep in mind we do have a lot of moisture on the ground. you combine that with clear skies and light winds overnight. we could see dense valley fog tomorrow, primarily in the north bay and east bay valleys. overall your headlines, what to expect? mostly dry and mild for your monday. areas of patchy morning fog then a warming trend continues through midweek. tomorrow the beginning where highs are warming up in to the 50s and 60s area-wide. 55, san francisco. 64, san jose. 59 in fairfield. the forecast shows more of the same. gradual warming trend through midweek.
