we're a day away from the opening of super bowl city with fireworks and the relighting of the bay bridge lights. good afternoon, i'm frank mallicoat. michelle is on assignment. of course, we are counting down to super bowl 50. just nine days from the showdown in santa clara a week from sunday but this is where all the action will be and it all starts tomorrow. super bowl city officially opens with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 11 a.m. then seven straight days of events will begin. the biggest tomorrow night, free chris issak concert bay bridge lighting and all the fireworks. kpix 5's anne makovec is live at super bowl city with a preview of the big fireworks show. >> reporter: the backdrop to the big show the bay bridge very close to super bowl city. this is the official kickoff to super bowl 50 week. >> reporter: today

pyrotechnicians are loading and wiring about 15,000 fireworks shells on to two barges in the bay. some shells are almost a foot in diameter weighing 35 pounds. >> each one has its own address and its own individual igniter that will be sent back to four computers to launch this into the sky. they also produced this spectacular in new york city last 4th of july. saturday's show here will be a 12-minute synchronized display set to music including football anthems and music from past halftime performers. >> then we listen to that and say, what's it sound and feel like? what colors? what passion moments? >> reporter: this one will send hearts into the sky during "i left my heart in in san francisco," but the end. >> 50 bursts in 50 seconds it's going to be a grand finale.

kickoff beginning tomorrow night at 7 p.m. here on kpix 5 your television home for super bowl 50. happening today, if you want to take in the iconic view of san francisco from vista point, you are out of luck. it's not because of the fog. today through february the 7th the marin side of the vista will be closed. the crush of super bowl tourists would gum up the traffic and visitors feel like they're being cheated. >> it's something you have to do when you come to san francisco. you know, everybody talks about it on yelp. it's all over the place. you come here, it's a selfie heaven i guess as far as what they say. it would be terrible if it's closed. >> no parking zone will be in effect between 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. the only way to get there during those times is by bus, shuttle, taxi or rideshare. not to be left out, south bay is gearing up for their own super bowl 50 fun. kpix 5's kiet do looks at their kickoff celebration tonight. >> reporter: we are here in plaza de cesar chavez in downtown san jose and, wow,

take a look at this place. it looks amazing! the crews have been working on this for weeks now with some designers. they have lights in the trees and it's a laser light thing going on. these glowing cubes. they have adirondack chairs for the parents to relax in, picnic tables. i don't know if you can see off to the left. there is a community stage where you can have some performances. this whole thing looks very family-friendly. starting tonight, there will be live music and the l.e.d. lights will be timed to the music. there will be a beard garden, outdoor cafe, small football field for the kids. the party will continue every day through super bowl sunday. so the party starts tonight at 5 p.m. at plaza de cesar chavez. it goes until 10 p.m. then every day after that, it goes from noon to 10 p.m. through super bowl sunday. in downtown san jose, kiet do, kpix 5. the giant super bowl banner that caused a ruckus in the week is gone. the city made verizon take down the 25 story billboard on the

side of embarcadero 4 saying it violated a 50-year-old sign ordinance but the visa sign on the side of one market can stay. the city says it falls within the rules because it's far smaller than verizon's banner plus the super bowl logo is the heart of the message. anything you need know about what to see and when to see it related to super bowl 50 go to cbssf.com/sb50. everything you need to know is right there. our latest storm creating a dramatic scene at the coast. this is pacifica, where big waves are pounding the cliffs and the shoreline there. a high surf advisory runs through tomorrow along the coast in san francisco and monterey bay areas. it's not good news for the apartments on esplanade avenue in pacifica. stormy surf could further erode that crumbling cliffside. some of the apartments have already been yellow-tagged and evacuated. work is under way to repair some of the damage. the pacifica pier by the way also is being battered and remains closed to the public. and here's the mess one huge oak tree made in walnut

creek. it fell on a house next to lancaster park around 2:00 this morning. the homeowners thought the noise was an earthquakes, and the oak is so big the city is bringing in a contractor to get it cleaned up. the house and a nearby fence were damaged but nobody was injured. so how about this wet weather? roberta has been tracking it all morning long on hi-def doppler. >> in hasn't looked very impressive according to our live hi-def doppler radar but when you are in one of these rain echoes, these cells that just open up, boy, has it poured. so far an inch of rain in venado, which is due west of healdsburg. meanwhile we picked up .8" rain in saint helena. and easily three-quarters inch of rain outside of mill valley. right now, this is the scene looking at our hi-def doppler. you see the rain outside garberville. it's sagging south going east. light scattered rain showers from saint helena through napa and all this will cover our

area for the evening commute. now, the bay lights, this ceremony is going to take place beginning at 7:00 tomorrow in san francisco super bowl 50 city and 52 degrees. the rain will not impact that forecast. meanwhile, by the end of the ceremony, we have a concert, we have the fireworks! expect temperatures to drop so bundle up, have a great time and no rain is in the forecast. frank? >> all right, roberta. thanks. new at noon a two-alarm fire in los gatos in the sierra azul open space preserve around 8 a.m. when the firefighters arrived, they say a single trailer was in flames. everyone was evacuated safely. the cause of the fire is under investigation. family and friends of a missing campbell man are now in mourning after days of searching. his body was found in santa cruz county. people having leaving candles and mementos in front of gps sports in san jose.

that's where kyle myrick's body was found. >> we had hoped up to the last he would be okay. we knew it was a long shot. having him back, though, is so much better than not knowing where he is. >> myrick's coworker steve hlebo is charged with murder. a year after body parts were found stuffed in a suitcase in san francisco, police say they know exactly what happened. investigators say they are sure now that mark andrus killed and dismembered his former roommate. andrus died after the body was discovered. police say witnesses reported hearing someone begging for mercy inside andrus' room. they are confident andrus was the killer. in other bay area headlines raiders owner mark davis reportedly meeting today to discuss moving the raiders to las vegas. one possible location is on land that's owned by unlv where they have 42 acres for a facility that could be shared

with a pro football team. federal investigators are at the scene of a fatal plane crash near santa rosa. two people died when the single- engine piper went down around 7:00 last night. plane was going to sonoma county from palm springs. no word on the identity of the victims. parking fees going up in three east bay bart stations starting monday. rate will go up to $2 in hayward, $2.50 in richmond and 8 bucks in west oakland. the last bart parking hike was at four stations in december. coming up a name change for an east bay business. the owners say isis had to go for obvious reasons. it wasn't the kind of renovation they were planning. the painful story of a san francisco family forced to bulldoze their brand-new home. >> and it's not exactly a little lost lamb. would you believe goat. why police are on the case when we come back. ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

an unfortunate identity cri today... the "isis salon" changed its name to elyssium advanced sn care. in its words.. "for a slob in salon changed its name to alyssium advanced skin care. it used to be isis. it was named after an egyptian goddess, not the terrorists. the salon manager says the name sparked death threats. the rebranding will be complete next week. republicans duked it out last night in des moines at yet another debate. reporter marlie hall shows us who seized the night with no trump on the stage. >> reporter: new jersey governor chris christie was one of the first gop candidates back on the campaign trail this morning following the debate last night without donald trump. the front-runner had bowed out in his ongoing feud with fox news. >> let's address the elephant not in the room tonight.

>> reporter: he appeared at his own event about five minutes away. in nashua, new hampshire, this morning donald trump tried to rally more support. >> you got to be tough. you got to be strong. you got to be -- you can't let them push you around. >> reporter: last night at center stage, for the first time and running neck and neck with trump in iowa, ted cruz became a target. >> gosh, if you guys say -- ask one more mean question, i may have to leave the stage! [ laughter ] >> reporter: this morning, dr. ben carson gave his own performance high marks. >> i had, um, probably the least amount of time but i think i probably had the most substance. >> reporter: some political pundits say chris christie gave a solid debate performance last night. but the new jersey governor is way behind in the polls and will have an uphill battle in iowa. christie asked potential supporters this morning to tell their neighbors why he should get their vote. >> he is the most tested person on that stage. he is the person who is most ready. >> reporter: voters like roger

ettinger having following events closely. >> i hope it's not trump. >> reporter: the candidates have their hands full with last- minute campaigning this weekend. and the long-awaited first in the nation caucus begins monday. marlie hall, cbs news, des moines iowa. when the republicans take the stage in south carolina february 13th, you can catch that debate right here on kpix 5. new at noon, a texas judge has agreed to let "affluenza" teen ethan couch remain in juvenile detention while he awaits a ruling or transferring his case to the adult system. during the a hearing this morning prosecutors asked to move the 18-year-old to an adult jail. couch and his mother fled to mexico last month after video surfaced that showed he may have violated his probation in a 2013 drunk driving wreck that killed four people. a san francisco dream home demolished and el nino is to blame. the owners of a hillside home in san francisco were out of town when a neighbor texted them saying their house's foundation was moving. officials say the house on

casitas avenue slid 14" in one week. they just bought the house in november and haven't moved in yet. >> it was mid century modern and home had great bones. i have had better weeks. >> he says he does plan to rebuild but there's no telling when that process will begin. well, there's a baby goat in the bay area and he would really like to see his mom again. somebody in fremont found this cuddly little goat yesterday. pretty cute. animal services say the goat is about a week old, healthy but they would like to find mom. the department is seeking a temporary home for now. off to weather now. we have rain and a big super bowl party starting tomorrow. >> oh, pick me! i'll adopt the goat! i think she was looking for green grass to chow down on because we have a lot of things turning green now. we have rain out there. let's check in with our weather watchers. that's 59 degrees let's see if

18 minutes some arriving flights. look how mild it is. 50s and all the way up to 65 degrees in livermore at this hour. here's what you need to know. muggy, mild with scattered showers increasing as the day wears on. it will be rain early said, most of the rain dry, showers south on sunday core of the area of low pressure well to the north of the bay area. this is that frontal boundary tapping into all the atmospheric river. but most of the activity to the north of our area. high surf advisory until 4 a.m. tomorrow morning. we have upped the swells. i just checked in. they are already up to 16 and 17 feet. lapping onshore eroding our seashore and causing some sneaker wave. this is futurecast. it will be wet. here's your overnight hours waking up saturday most activity to the south and the bulk of the day cloudy but dry. sunday morning starts off cloudy. receding clouds as the day wears. rainfall totals up to .19" in santa rosa.

some cases dying, from eati poisonous mushro a dangerous potentially deadly side effect from the el nino rains dogs are getting sick and in some cases dying from eating poisonous mushrooms. they are sprouting up on dog walking trails in the bay area and in yard, as well. here to talk about that and some of the dangers our pet expert dr. jill and say hi to this little lovely pooch harper. i guess the first thing is just to be vigilant, right? in your backyard and on the trail you have to keep an eye out? >> if you are going to be take a hike especially at this time

of the year when they are everywhere make sure they are on leashing and be vigilant about not letting them get anything into their mouth that you don't give them. the leash is the big thing. >> if you let your dogs run -- >> some people walk like this and look elsewhere. >> that's true. >> so i would recommend that. some of the mushrooms are less toxic than others but they cause liver disease and liver failure so as soon as you know that a dog has eaten a mushroom immediately take it to the vet who will probably try to induce vomiting, give charcoal to absorb the toxins and other testing. it happens quickly. they will usually show gi signs like vomiting, stomach crampings, list less, they will turn yellow. >> is a dog attracted to a mushroom? >> some dogs are better than others. i have a lab who has no brain. he will eat anything.
