live from the cbs bay area studios, this is kpix 5 news. what a way to kickoff super bowl 50, san francisco's waterfront coming alive right here on kpix 5 with lights, fireworks and this is just the begin. >> first, their run from the law ends here in the bay area. two dangerous fugitives chased down and caught. the drama and a whole foods parking lot. >> those escaped inmates had been on the runt for more than a week and tonight they are back in custody. this starts eight days ago at the orange county jail. three violent offenders pulled off the escape and today their

luck run out in san francisco. andre borba says all it'sing thanks to one observant manage. >> in the parking lot of whole foods on haight where life on the lam quickly unraveled. eight days days after a brazen escape from the men's jail until orange county an eagle- eyed man pointed out the man. >> the citizen informed police that they had known these people were wanted and possibly matched the description. >> reporter: tiptoff the white van, the pair along with fellow escapee allegedly stole earlier in the week. >> the white van is in fact, the same one stolen from los angeles that we believe they were driving, and possibly living out of. >> reporter: when officers approached, nayeri ran the chase ran down stanyan through golden gate park, near alfred lake and kezar stadium, hand-helding a stone's throw at stanyan and

waller. >> code 4, code 4, we have got them down. >> inside the van was jonathan tieu and ammunition, 380 rounds although sf pdp had been warned that the jailbirds had ties to san franciscof san francisco, just yesterday, the pair were spotted in san josi at this motel on the alameda. where someone else checked them in and paid cash. >> it's believed that they were living inside the van and it's unclear whether they were staying at hotel and at the van, and separating their time between the two? >> reporter: the two fugitives were booked into jail in san francisco and hand offend to orange county authorities. they are expected to be back in jail in santana sometime around midnight. that third suspect surrendered to police yesterday about noon he walked into an auto shop and asked a friend to call police. a wild scene in the south bay, a bay area woman with some interesting tattoos still on the run along with her alleged

partner in crime. kpix's 5 is live in campbell with the latest on the search. maria. >> reporter: a wild scene indeed, veronica. it was like a scene out of a movie, suspects caught red- handed, a car on fire, and the perfect getaway. >> they were on some type of crime spree, when our officers encounted them. >> reporter: campbell police say the trio of suspects broke no homes in los gatos and coastline overnight and stole two cars when their officers came face-to-face with them. >> obviously a very serious situation that unfolded very quickly. >> reporter: police say they found two stolen cars and suspects still inside them. now identified as maria, hernandez and anthony reyes and what happened next could have ended deadly. >> he rammed into him, and i guess the car caught on fire, and the guy jump out of his car and took off running and jumped the fence in the back lot

behind us. >> reporter: as the stolen suv caught fire, an officer chase the suspect, leaving behind his patrol car, and giving mario the perfect opportunity to get away. she allegedly jumped into the patrol car, dragging ang officer who tried to stop her. they eventually found the police car, but the suspect was long gone. hernandez also still on the run as reyes sits behind bars waiting for them to join him. >>kind of an uneasy feeling until they catch them. >> reporter: all suspects have criminal histories and in fact, mario was already being investigate by campbell police for a previous breakin. by the way, and most importantly, that campbell police officer is expected to be okay. live in campbell, kpix 5. >> employees are saying all of the weapons and the stolen patrol car are are accounted for. >> the biggest super bowl ever, super bowl 50 is now seven days away seen right here on kpix 5 and the festivities

kicked off tonight with lots of fanfare. >> you saw it here on kpix earlier tonight. a granted relighting of the bay bridge lights and massive fireworks show over the bay. what a way to get things started. >> our kpix 5 team was long the waterfront, capturing it all. let's start with emily turner and you had did have one of the best seats in the house. >> reporter: i'm glad we don't have an argument about who had the best seat because i had the bay bridge and the fireworks on this side and it was quite a show and i was not the only one who enjoyed it. 3, 2, 1! [ applause ] we're not in paris, but tonight san francisco is the new city of lights. >> it's really beautiful. really beautiful after a brief hiatus, the bay bridge lights are back on and at tonight's official relighting the crowd was excited not only about the exhibit, but fact it's now a permanent part of bay area.

>> i couldn't be happier. really thrilled and excited to finally be able to unveil this monument piece of public art. >> it was a spectacular night for fireworks-i'm not american and i'm not so excited about all football, american football, but yes, it's really exciting to live here and to see so many people. >> reporter: and those people crowded the embarcadero for the show. the macy's fireworks display had a theme of gold, for a golden anniversary, 50 years' of super bowl and tonight it kicked off with a bang. >> reporter: what was your favorite part about the fireworks display? >> the finale. >> why? >> because it was so colorful and very loud and all pop and then it went off and on. >> reporter: were you excited about super bowl 50? >> yes. >> awesome. >>on and joe

vazquez in heart of all of the action. >> and who had an even better seat. we saw fireworks here, too and the ladies taking selfies and we saw a lot more action on the first day of super bowl city. >> i think it's awesome. >> reporter: super bowl 50 is officially on. and tens of thousands came to san francisco, 45 miles from the game itself, to enjoy the pre-party. >> it's only here once and we had to come to the city and enjoy the festivities [ applause ] >> reporter: super bowl city the free-family- friendly fan village centered at embarcadero and market open market opened with a video message from first lady michelle

illionaire 48 hours dug into a story tonight, a strange twist in the case of suspected murderer and multi-millionaire robert durst. next week as part of an unusual plea-deal durst will admit to a gun charge and put him on trial for murder. durst is expected of killing susan berman a former bay area journalist with ties to kpix 5. >> reporter: she was a gangster's daughter. >> she was a very ballsy gal. >> who lived large. >> nothing stopped susan berman working briefly in the bay area as a freelance journalist and television producer. >> she was totally outspoken, not malicious, but she had no filters. >> she was provocative. >> susan was the wildest journalist i ever know. >> bermage and her posse of

an associate producer job at kpix's new show "evening magazine." but not everyone was impressed. >> she went well-liked. >> reporter: former producer bob klein remembers berman took credit for stories that came from a press release. >> she wasn't forthcoming and she was self-promoteing. >> she told me right away, my father was a gangster and my mother was a show girl and they are both dead now. it was that kind of straightforward, but she was shrewd. >> reporter: this producer liked berman and her fast life. >> she would have parties in the big mansion in pacific heights that she owned. >> no one remembers meet her college friend and now suspected killer robert durst except hinkle. >> he was very weird. , not scared, but wary of him. he had a strange look this his

eyes. >> bedrooman was deuter's confidante and friends say she may have covered for him when durst was suspected of killing his wife in 1982. berman told durst they were re- opening the investigation. soon after berman a body was found in her rented benedict canyon home in los angeles and now durst is finally arrested for her murder, but no one is surprised. >> i think she was so close to him, she thought he would never turn on her. obviously that is where she is trusting and vulnerabled and blind. >> she was not discrete. she talked and told her secret and everybody else's. >> secrets, friends say, that killed her. in san francisco, kpix 5. >> a motorcycle show in denver ends with bullets flying and one person was killed, least seven injured when two rival motorcycle clubs went after

each other. at one point about 50 men were fighting at colorado motorcycle spornear the denver coliseum. police say no suspects are in custody and they are still trying to figure out how it all got start campaign 2016 is down to the wire in iowa, the caucuses are monday, less than 48 hours. hillary clinton and bernie sanders spent the day vying for votes and the new poll showing clinton holding a narrow leave and sanders surging and in some polls passing clinton. the republican candidates also crisscrossing iowa. donald trump has jumped out in front of ted cruz and marco rubio. cruz held a lead a couple of weeks ago. experts say the undecided voters will make the difference on monday. >> protesters used the opening- day of super bowl to try to get their message across. about 200 people gathered in union square and marched down market street towards justin herman plaza.

they wanted to bring attention to the deadly shooting of mario woods by san francisco police. officers kept them from reaching super bowl city, but traffic was a complete mess. the protest ended quietly. speaking of super bowl city, mayor ed lee told the homeless people they would have to leave, but where did they go? we found out that they are crowding in lower portero pill. one neighbor say it's the most explosive tent city he has ever seen. >> our countdown to gold continues and chopper 5 captured the opening night from above. we're one week away from the big game. carolina panthers taking on the denver broncos and the winning team takes home the coveted vince lombardi trophy. >> making its appear with the help of a super bowl champ. roger craig was there to sign

for the lombardi trophy. football most prestigious award arrived at moscone. craig said holding the trophy again gave him goosebumps. you can check out the trophy at the nfl experience. >> ladies and gentlemen we have a number of questions to answer, first being is it it going to rain tomorrow? maybe a little bit in the south bay, but after that high and dry with a few exception. first looking out towards the embarcadero, all beautifully light with the bay bridge to the left and the numbers right now, training 47 degrees in santa rosa to 51 in concord. oakland 53 and livermore 50. big plum of moisture out there, but this one is directed towards southern california and already it's bigging to rain around the monterey coastline. there could be a little bit of light rain in the south bay, but that would be about it. we could get some scattered showers towards sunrise. rest of the day as you will see

futurecast will dry out. rain turns to snow in the mountains and winter weather advisories posted until 4:00 a.m. monday morning. the snow coming down means whiteouts are a possibility. rain focus shifts south over the next 48 hours, where they are getting to get hammered in san diego and los angeles. for us, light rain passing through quickly, but rest of the day sunday looks pretty nice. 4:00 tomorrow afternoon looks clear, but some residual moisture. later in the day, again after the chance of showers. there is monday and then tuesday by 10:00, another chance of a few light showers coming through, but that would be about it. rest of the day that clears off as well. so to sum it all up, chance of a shower or two tomorrow. favoring the south bay and then we'll clear off to mostly sunny conditions by later in the day. monday looks sunny and dry and next shot of showers coming in
