they touched down in the bay area. the super bowl 50 teams gearing up for the game just one week away. >> but first, wild weather. wind knocking over trees leaving a mess. and hail pelting parts of the bay area. good evening, i'm brian hackney. >> and i'm juliette goodrich. let's start with christin ayers live in redwood city tonight where a toppled tree is causing big problems. >> problems that really don't get much bigger than this. you can see how big that tree is. you can barely see the home behind it. and a wheelchair-bound man who lives here can't even get to his front door. >> reporter: a powerful gust of wind ripped through this redwood city neighborhood around 3:00 this afternoon, uprooting a

massive tree and knocking down a power line. >> then the tree just came down slowly and then it just fell on top of my step dad's truck. >> reporter: on to the truck and right smack in the middle of this front yard on hamilton avenue, making it nearly impossible for the people who live here to get in or out without climbing a fence. >> my brother is handicap and he can't get inside. >> reporter: when we spoke to her brother, jose, he had been stranded outside his home for four hours. >> i wanted to go inside because it's kind of cold. >> reporter: tonight he'll stay with relatives till a crew can clean up the mess. this wasn't the only tree brought down in the blustery weather. in san francisco's west portal neighborhood, firefighters were working to clear branches after a tree hit the ground so hard the sidewalk buckled under the weight. another tree not far away came crashing down right between a couple of cars. and back in red could city, this family will be stuck waiting overnight for someone to clear the tree. >> yeep, it's good that nobody got hurt but it's just

unfortunate because we're locked out of our house. >> pg&e just left a few minutes ago. they managed to get power up and going in this neighborhood. as far as the tree and when it will be removed, it was actually on private property when it fell. that means firefighters couldn't remove it. he said he's going to try to get someone to fix it tomorrow. the same storm system bringing our strong winds is proving deadly in southern california. a woman died near san diego when the winds knocked a massive tree on to four cars. she was driving by when it happened. and high winds were also to blame for a scaffolding collapse in san diego. it happened outside a 10-story building. the scaffolding crashed in to the street, damaging several cars and motorcycles. another part of the storm, hail. check this out. hail coming down in vacaville this afternoon. a viewer sent us this video he took outside of a starbucks. napa got a dusting

of hail as well. the wind whipped trees around while the wind accumulated on the grounds. it also hailed in pleasanton. roberta gonzalez captured the small pellets bouncing on this trampoline. the southland storm took a backhand flap at the bay area. wrap around moisture triggered showers and snow and wind. gusts were clocked at over 50 miles per hour at ocean beach. most other spots were in the 40-mile-per-hour range. that's why wind advisories were posted throughout the bay area tonight. those wind advisories in effect. they'll ease up tomorrow but there is more rain on the way. we'll detail that when we cover the forecast in a few minutes. tonight we've learned a leaky water pipe may be to blame for a crumbling hillside in san francisco. it's left multimillion-dollar homes on the brink of collapse for days. engineers bring a water main break on casitas avenue may have caused the land to shift.

a home was so unstable it had to be demolished. homeowners say it appears there have been signs of a leak for at least the last month. >> we know from the neighbors down the hill that they've been experiencing water in their garages for the past month and that was all new within a month. >> tonight the pipe is capped. the public utility commission is still investigating. officials say it's too early to know yet whether the leak was direct ly responsible for the shifting hillside. counting down to the biggest game of the year. super bowl 50 is less than a week away. >> the two teams that will battle it out are in the bay area right now. the denver broncos and carolina panthers touching down earlier today. >> and tonight santa clara kicked off its celebration, ready to host the big game at levi's stadium. >> kpix 5 maria medina is at levi's stadium tonight. she says the teams are already making themselves at home. >> the crowds are out at the

hotels today and if you're a broncos fan, you got to see your team. if you're a panthers fan or the media, we weren't so lucky. >> reporter: it's the moment these diehard panthers fans waited for since learning their team made it to the super bowl. getting to greet the players as they arrived at the san jose marriott. >> just to see them come through and let them know they're welcome here in san jose and tell them keep pounding. let's win this thing. >> reporter: meanwhile at the santa clara marriott, diehard broncos fans also stood outside, some waiting for hours, like the garcia twins of san jose. >> finally see them and wave and say go broncos, that will make our day. >> reporter: the teams finally touched down at san jose international airport an hour apart. first the broncos who arrived to this warm welcome to the bay area. [ cheering ] >> it was a wonderful experience seeing the players come off the bus. it was worth the wait. >> reporter: an unforgettable experience for the crowd. but for panthers fans, they later

learned police snuck them in to the hotel the back way, leaving them waiting and wondering in the cold. still with exactly one week till the big game, they all know they can still get the chance to run in to the players who they hope will come out of their hotels and enjoy the south bay. >> we are both from north carolina so we have been huge fans for a long time and it's exciting they're in our hometown now. >> if i don't see them right at this second i know i'll see them because i live around the corner. so i'll catch some flavor. >> she'll catch some flavor. so the teams do plan to stay a day after the super bowl. even though the crowds didn't get to see the panthers as they arrived at the hotel, take a look at this video. some lucky fans got to see some of the players as they were leaving the san jose marriott a couple hours ago enjoying a night out in the town here in san jose. that's wide receiver devon signing some autographs. if you're lucky, you'll get other see some of the

players out here in the south bay hopefully. maria medina, kpix 5. the pre-super bowl festivities are underway in santa clara. devin fehely with the celebration that scored big points with fans. >> reporter: in the heart of silicon valley, rock and roll hall of famers heart helped the south bay kick off the celebration of super bowl 50, now just one week away. >> the city is throwing a party, we got super bowl in town, and we're out here to check it out. >> reporter: dennis jacobs wasn't alone. thousands joined the party at santa clara's mission college for a day-long celebration of food, fun, sports and music, as the excitement builds for the big game. >> i'm a santa clara resident and this is huge around here. a lot of parties going on and it's a little out of my price range. i can't afford $4,000 seats but it's just exciting. >> heart is up next, guys. >> reporter: even i got in on

the fun, mc-ing the celebration in concert. the super bowl is the biggest sporting event in the world and it's shining a bright spotlight on the host city of santa clara. fans say they're basking in the attention that comes with the big game. >> i think it's fantastic. i live like a mile from the stadium and a lot of people are bothered by it but for me i think it gives people jobs. >> reporter: the celebration reached a crescendo with a fireworks display which lit up the sky a short distance from the stadium which fans hope will mirror the fireworks on the field next week. >> of course i'm excited. this is an opportunity for our bay area to be spotlight. >> reporter: at mission college in santa clara, devin fehely, kpix 5. >> chopper 5 was over the vip venue that's been built in the levi's stadium parking lot. it's just to the north of the entry gate. the venue will host several exclusive events prior to the game and on super bowl

sunday. in san francisco the opening of super bowl city brought big crowds this weekend and it could bring super traffic for the monday commute. kpix 5's joe vazquez says you can face some big delays especially if you take the ferry or b.a.r.t. >> take a look behind me. you can see the security checkpoint with the wind damaged sign. commuters who come in to the city, especially ferry riders, are going to get to know these checkpoints intimately over the next week. >> reporter: any time, night or day, organizers say anybody walking through the grounds of super bowl city will have to go through a security bag check. even during morning commute hours, extra staff and volunteers will be on hand to help direct commuters, some of whom have already gone through a security check on the ferry and now have to do it again. >> wow, that's intense. i think that would be an

inconvenience but yeah, it's only for a week. so i guess you suck it up. >> if you work outside of the few blocks surrounding market and the embarcadero you could avoid security by walking down mission street. >> go panthers. keep pounding. >> reporter: former panther cheerleader kristen says that's okay with her, but then again, she doesn't work in the city. >> if you don't work in this immediate area it will take 6 minutes to walk around to mission street. >> it's just 6 minutes, people. it will be okay. >> un less you have to be the one walking. >> no, it'd be okay. it's super bowl 50. >> reporter: if you're hoping to hop right on to b.a.r.t., you should know the speer street entrance to the embarcadero station is closed. to be clear, the b.a.r.t. station is not closed, just this one entrance on speer. and today we've learned they will reopen this entrance during morning commute hours between 6:45 and 9:45 a.m. >> enjoy the rest of your day. >> to be clear about what ferry

night. >> reporter: presidential candidates are crisscrossing iowa to seal the deal. begging their baggers to caucus on monday night. >> monday night could be an historic night for this country. >> reporter: democrats bernie sanders and hillary clinton are separated by just three points in the latest poll. martin o'malley is in a distant third. if his supporters jump ship they could be the deciding factors. on the gop side donald trump has a slight lead over ted cruz. >> commit tomorrow night to come out and caucus for us. >> reporter: on the campaign tour his bus got stuck in the mud and needed a tow. they're trying to win over evangelicals. >> if we can come out of iowa with a nice victory, it's so important. >> reporter: volunteers are also giving a final push, canvassing across the state.

and making tens of thousands of phone calls. political experts say this late in the game volunteers should not be trying to change people's minds but making sure already committed voters actually show up on caucus night. >> you have to be in line by 7:00. if you're not in line, your vote will not be counted. >> reporter: bad weather threatens much of the state but candidates are hoping it holds off the iowa caucuses started in 1972 but this year they're getting a high tech twist. the precincts and parties will be reporting results on a new app on their mobile devices. we expect to know the winners a lot sooner than in years passed. it's a familiar sight for two escaped inmates. tonight jonathan tieu limped back in to the same jail he managed to escape from last week. his alleged accomplice, hossein nayeri, was right behind him.

the two were on the run for eight days but yesterday their luck ran out. a man spotted their van in this whole foods parking lot on stanian street and tipped off police. a third inmate had turned himself in on friday. it happened again. a hoverboard burst ing in to flames. this time in san leandro. take a look at the smoke billowing out of the home on glen drive yesterday. firefighters put the flames out before they reached the second floor but the lower level was badly damaged and here's what's left of the hoverboard. crews say it was charging when it caught fire. this is the latest in a string of fires in the bay area caused by hoverboards. interstate 80 is back open tonight after a massive pileup. the snowy conditions caused a 29-vehicle train reaction crash near truckee. several stretches of the interstate leading to the sierra were closed for hours. the chp says there were no major injuries. people living in parts of

soda springs in the sierra are being allowed to return to their homes after flooding caused by heavy ice forced them to evacuate. crews had to bring in heavy equipment to clear it. one of the main roads in the area was closed for hours. >> wow. i suppose the good side of that is we're getting snow in the sierra. but boy, if we could spread it out a little bit. we've been talking about the fact super bowl is coming on sunday. you've seen this logo many, many times. what's the historic thing about this logo that's never been used going back to super bowl 1? what's unusual about this? no telling juliette. >> i was seeing if those were bay lights in the back but i'm thinking no roman numerals? >> since every super bowl since super bowl 1 has used roman numerals but they thought 50 is an l, and super bowl l would

look weird. so they used arabic numerals for the first time in the history of the super bowl. wind advisories are posted tonight. wind gusts up to 50 miles per hour along the shoreline and right now we're looking at temperatures mostly in the upper 40s and mid 50s. 55 degrees at oakland. 49 at concord. 45 degrees in santa rosa as we look toward the action there at levi's stadium. hi-def doppler was fairly active this afternoon. we got snow up at mount hamilton. where the national weather service radar has been down. gusts up to 50. in livermore up to 41 miles per hour. here's a map that looks ahead at what the winds will be doing between now and tomorrow afternoon and the brighter color is the stronger winds. but by tomorrow night at this time things calm down. it will be windy tonight as that low pressure that has sunk south

takes the showers with it finally will get out of our hair by monday and we'll be looking at mostly sunny skies. by monday evening it's going to be perfectly clear. look what happens on tuesday, right in time for the morning commute. 7 a.m., we've got more showers moving in to the bay area. that's tuesday. tomorrow looks pretty good. here's what we're expecting. the showers end tonight. we've got gusty winds. mainly sunny and cool tomorrow. rain coming in on tuesday morning. forecast highs will be in the mid 50s for the most part tomorrow. and for super bowl city, 56 degrees, sunny and cool. extended forecast, next chance of rain after a sunny monday coming tuesday morning, maybe a chance of lingering showers wednesday but look at thursday, friday, saturday, sunday. we're going to go sunnyside up in to the weekend and temperatures almost nudging 70 degrees. a forecast for super sunday calls for 67 degrees, sunny and mild. in an el nino year in february it's hard to get better than that. still ahead, how you can

a potential new spin on sex ed in san francisco middle schools. >> school leaders are considering distributing condoms to students. the proposal is expected to be discussed at a board meeting tomorrow. it's part of the district's push to prevent the spread of sexually transmitted diseases and cut down on teen pregnancy. san francisco has allowed condoms to be distributed at high schools since 1991. still ahead, people willing to wait to check out the bay area's newest art museum. ,,,,,,,,,,,,

art than football, a look at the newest art museum. >> reporter: people waited in long lines this morning and it had absolutely nothing to do with the nfl. in fact, this glistening new stadium belongs to ban pfa. >> you can see art from all different cultures and we're thrilled to be reopening. >> reporter: the berkeley art museum and pacific film archive hoped its doors to its new building downtown from its stainless steel architecture to its spacious galleries, the museum features a wide array of fine arts. the inaugural theme is architecture of life, examining the connection of man to the things he builds with a few spiders thrown in. there are also three theaters to celebrate the art of film making, from experimental films to hollywood features and a massive l.e.d. screen outside lets people on the sidewalk in on the fun. >> we wanted passers by walking
