live from the cbs bay area studios, this is kpix 5 news. chopper 5 over breaking fuse in san francisco. a chp officer has his throat slit in a confrontation with a homeless man. >> this picture tweeted out minutes ago shows the suspect.

the suspect in the attack on the chp officer being taken into custody. the man had blood on his pants. the attack happened at 10:30 on the bay bridge. police caught the suspect at 4th and brannen streets. and jackie ward has the latest. >> reporter: we're right by the starbucks where the suspect was taken into custody. there's an active scene with a lot of police officers, and we did see a man get into handcuffs and get in the cop car. as you can see from the aerials from chopper 5, it's still a very congested area. and the onramp to the bay bridge is closed. unofficially around 10:15 a homeless person stabbed a chp officer with a knife. a witness said around 10:20 he tweeted out photos and he could tell police were reacting and

it was not a trill. >> yeah, there were police coming from pretty much every way in this main intersection and a bunch got out of the car pretty much at 4th and brannen and were running east and north up 4th street. and most of them had their weapons out. >> reporter: it's important to note that you saw video of what we believe to be the weapon. it was laying in the starbucks parking lot for a while. from what i could tell it looked to be about a 6-inch blade. the officer is in surgery and they are expecting him to survive and they are dealing with a slashed throat as a result of being stabbenned by a homeless person. we'll bring you more updates as we learn about the investigation. in san francisco, jackie ward, kpix 5. traffic was brought to a

near halt. the streets leading to the bay bridge were clogged with traffic. police continue the investigation and we don't expect them to clear the scene any time soon. a chp officer stabbed in a confrontation with a homeless man. and we are waiting for word on his condition. we have crews and we'll bring you updates throughout the newscast. we'll take a live look at super bowl city from our camera atop the ferry building. fans just coming in with raincoats and umbrellas in hand. when will it dry up. let's check with roberta gonzales and get the forecast. >> we have a little bit of sprinkles but the rain moved in and out rapidly. the radar is on the sweep for any kind of precipitation. light rainfall over the central valley and that's about it. we can see how quickly it moved

through beginning around 3 a.m. and then by 11:00 easily out of here. snow accumulated on the top of mount hamilton as well. mostly cloudy through the evening commute. tomorrow morning it will be dry albeit cloudy and watch what happens for the afternoon hours. rain moves back into the area. and it will be a wet evening commute. the big question is what will be the forecast for super bowl l? we have that coming up. plenty to do today related to super bowl l and not all of it is outdoors. nfl players and volunteers will be building a playground at the blossom river apartments. the playground is based on kids' drawings. and the moscone had hundreds of kids taking part in a

ted cruz finished 4 points ahead of donald trump and 5 points ahead of marco rubio. . democratic bernie sanders was rallying supporters before the sun came up. he's predicting a win in new hampshire after what he calls a draw in iowa. >> we just got in from iowa where we astounded the world. and now in new hampshire we must astound the world again. >> reporter: democratics split. >> i'm so thrilled i'm coming to new hampshire after winning iowa. >> reporter: bob schieffer said the results show clinton's campaign has problems. >> bernie sanders gave her a real run. this was not a victory for

hillary clinton. >> reporter: ted cruz won with 28% of the vote. and the third place finisher is getting a lot of attention. marco rubio finished just one point behind donald trump. >> we need to beat hillary clinton and bernie sanders. i give us the best chance to do that. >> he's going to receive a lot of love from others who were hoping to be the mainstream alternative. >> reporter: donald trump has a lead. and ted cruz will look to make a big dent. >> i think the voters sent the message they want a consistent conservative. >> reporter: new hampshire's primary -- the first in the nation -- is tuesday. cbs will host the next gop debate on saturday, february 13th in south carolina. chief white house correspondent major garrett and -- will join as moderators. test results are due today

on a student can suspected of having meningitis. the county health department is looking for anyone who may have come in close contact with the student. meningitis is a bacterial infection that can lead to paralysis or death. and teachers and families would be protected from eviction by legislation. david campos' bill bars landlords from executing no fault evictions during the school year for families with children under the age of 18. and it would protect child care centers and schools. ann arborist will be at berryessa park to inspect a tree that crushed a man to death. investigators are looking at whether the saturated soil caused it to topple. the man's name has not been released. the highway patrol is looking for a car and occupants targeted by a gunman.

bullets were flying on highway 4 near concord yesterday afternoon. people were hurt in the crash. three men in an altima were arrested and a pistol was recovered. no sign of the second car. a nudist camp near los gatos has been ordered to pay up for diverting water. the owner will have to pay $12,000 in fines and restitution. and serve 100 hours of community service. bill cosby is back in court. what his attorneys are trying to accomplish. and what yahoo is expected to announce. >> and a proper english woman offers unvarnished advice for super bowl sunday. and a clever ad campaign when we come back. ,,

charges against him be thro out. reporter brian webb on this mornings proceedings . osby was led int bill cosby is back in court. his attorneys are asking for charges to be thrown out. >> reporter: bill cosby was led into the courthouse for a hearing on the sexual assault case against him. attorneys for the 78-year-old comedian asked the judge to throw out a charge of aggravated indecent assault. cosby is accused of drugging and sexually assaulting andrea constant at his home in 2014. his attorneys say she was a willing participant. she settled a civil case in 2006 for an undisclosed sum. cosby's attorneys say his deposition was made after an agreement with then district attorney bruce caster that the former tv star not be

prosecuted. in recent months, more than 50 women have made similar claims against cosby. this is the first time he's been charged. his attorney called the case political payback from the new district attorney who opened the case. >> a former district attorney says there wasn't enough there. it was a civil matter. and instead, over a decade later, one hot campaign later we're here. >> reporter: bill cosby has been free on $1 million bail since his december arrest. he could get up to 10 years in prison if convicted. in the deposition made public, cosby said he gave quaaludes to young women and he gave constant three pills. yahoo could be cutting up to 1600 jobs. the cuts are part of a plan

stabbed. lets get right back out to jackie ward. we have an update on the breaking news we brought you at the top of the hour. a chp officer has been stabbed >> >> and we received new video of the suspect. let's get back to jackie ward. >> the officer that was stabbed is suffering from life threatens injuries and is stable. let's show you the suspect video. he's already cuffed here at 4th and brannen. and this is where a police chase from harrison and essex stopped. the witness was about 50 feet away and saw the man aggressively approach police officers with something in his hand. he wasn't able to make out what was in his hands. and police officers grabbed him, and grabbed his hands and put him in handcuffs. the incident happened by harrison and essex by the

onramp of the bay bridge. that's where the police officer was stabbed. police are saying he was slashed across the throat. we've talked to various people who say that it ended around 10:20 this morning and they could tell almost immediately this was not a police drill. there was a little bit of chaos has they were chasing the suspect. we saw the weapon -- what we believe to be the weapon -- laying in the parking lot. it looks to be a 6-inch blade. but the police officer was taken to sf general hospital and suffering from life- threatening injuries. but he's stable and in surgery. a quick question about traffic. i imagine it's going to be tough to get home across the bay bridge, right? >> that onramp to the bay bridge by essex is probably still closed. probably a good identity to
