camera on the ferry building. crowds are beginning to build. you can feel it as fans arrive and you can feel the energy too in the city as super bowl sunday grows near. let's check the countdown clock. hard to believe after years of planning, we are just three days away from kickoff at levi's stadium where the broncos and the panthers will go at it on sunday afternoon and right now, the who's who of sports is in san francisco for a summit on women and athletics. kpix 5's anne makovec says the nfl commissioner made a big announcement there this morning. >> reporter: at least one woman must be interviewed for any open nfl executive position. it's just one bone the league is throwing to its female fans who now make up the fastest growing demographic in sports. >> those of us who are minorities, female, really have to say, i'm going to break through. >> reporter: condoleezza rice is speaking out in favor of women in sports. >> how do we get more girls to

play sports? how do we get them to develop the confidence that we believe is going to make them successful in life? >> reporter: there has been progress in college sports. there are five times as many women playing as in 1972. that's the year lawmakers passed title ix. now any school that receives federal funds cannot discriminate based on gender. this week, we profiled an 11- year-old girl from san jose who will be executing super bowl 50's very firsthandoff. >> before the game i'm going to get the game ball and i'm going to hand it off to the ref before super bowl 50. >> are you going to be nervous? >> a little bit because all those people are watching. but i think i'll get through it. >> reporter: she came up with the winning entry in a campaign weather encourages physical activity for kids. these are just some of the moves the league is making in the wake of some bad press over the last few years including players accused of violence against women in some high- profile criminal cases. that wasn't addressed today

with the focus on the positive. >> the commitment to trust your preparation and keep going to the end is an extremely important part of any endeavour in life. >> reporter: some of the big names coming up in this two-day summit, serena williams, billie jean king and jordin sparks. anne makovec, kpix 5. also at moscone center this morning, law enforcement warning counterfeiters they have stepped up enforcement for the super bowl and warning fans not to become victims. don't be this guy, a broncos fan who paid $6,000 for two tickets to sunday's game but when the envelope arrived -- >> feels a little light to be carrying these tickets. so i opened it up and it's just blank paper inside. >> it's not a total loss for him. he bought protection from paypal when he bought the tickets and that saved him from losing the $6,000. well, locals appear to be heeding the warning not to drive their cars downtown this

week. bart says it's seen record ridership. yesterday was the sixth busiest on record more than 741,000 people taking bart. expect those numbers to climb as we count down to super bowl sunday. >> smart people. how about a look live from our transamerica pyramid camera? how beautiful is that? the skies are clearing and the weather will be warming each day into sunday. perfect weather to walk a dog or even a puppy bol. jackie ward is with a bunch of cute little guys looking for new homes and you found a new friend. >> reporter: oh, my gosh, i want to take her home so badly. i have a cooper at home and cooper needs a sister. this is one of the dogs being featured here at the puppy bowl cafe right by the ferry building. this is the third year that animal planet has come to super bowl city to try to find these guys a forever home. that's what this is all about. so right now, these pups are playing but the ones we saw earlier they are taking a nap now and they were all named after "clue" characters. those are all part pit bull

mixes. there was also a chihuahua terrier in there and all of them will be available for adoption from the east bay spca but others will be available for adoption. the whole point of the event is because there is such a great need out there. >> there are billions of puppies that need forever homes and we do events like this throughout the year like road to puppy bowl as well, we did the nfl draft, woofstock in chicago to make sure every puppy has a home. >> reporter: forget the panthers versus broncos. check out this crowd here. it's unbelievable for the game's ruff versus team fluff. i can't believe how many people are here. people love their puppies. a lot of people are saying, what super bowl? what game? what is that about? this is the main event and i don't blame them. so definitely if you are in the area, check out the east bay spca or the san francisco acc. these pups will all be available for adoption starting monday. from san francisco, jackie

ward, kpix 5. >> we love the puppy bowl. so cute. from puppies to music, the band perry will be on city stage inside super bowl city at 7:30 tonight. then tomorrow night, it's one republic and on saturday, the alicia keys. that's a big one. yeah! round of applause for that. [ applause ] >> all these concerts are free but space is limited so you want to get there early. how about a live look at levi's stadium? the big game will be played there. it's stocked up, prepped, painted for super bowl 50. besides the football there will be a fireworks show, as well. crews have been testing the pyrotechnics there all week long. and, of course, there's the halftime show. a lot more music, all the heavy hitters, coldplay and beyonce performing. and we are told coldplay is already in town. the band plans to meet with the media a little later. of course, it takes a ton of planning to set up for the game and that halftime show, as well. cbs reporter jamie yuccas takes

us on a tour behind the scenes. >> reporter: testing graphic assist just a small part of what the cbs sports production crew does to get ready for the super bowl. >> i think when you walk into this room, what's so impressive is all the monitors. >> reporter: this cbs sports executive vice president has worked on close to 20 super bowls. >> we have all the bells and whistles known to mankind in sports broadcasting. >> reporter: there will be 70 cameras capturing the sights and sounds including more than 30 that will be mounted around the stadium for a 360 view. that's on top of a camera mounted to a plane and another on a tower at great america amusement park. >> this is super high-tech. >> super high-tech. >> reporter: sometimes you have to use a marker. >> right. >> reporter: there will be 16 of these pylon cameras that mark each corner of the end zone. the 13 production trailers on site at levi's stadium were brought in a month ago. the set is still getting its finishes touches. this is where all the hosts will be sitting on super bowl sunday and they are the ones

[ yelling ] >> ain't no power like the power of the people! >> about 200 protestors rallied on the edge of super bowl city last night but some 80 police officers stopped them from entering the secure perimeter. the protestors they are all angry with the city's homeless

policy and say the money spent on the super bowl should have gone to housing and healthcare in the city. they marched carrying tents along the embarcadero and then dispersed without incident. and the opening of a new homeless shelter on pier 80 has been delayed until today or possibly tomorrow. yesterday, crews were still putting the tents together. the shelter has room for up to 150 people. but homeless people and their supporters say it's just a ploy to keep them out of sight during the super bowl. a meningitis scare is prompting santa clara university to offer free vaccinations to students this after two under grand students tested positive for the infection -- after two undergrad students tested positive for the infection. they hope to vaccinate up to 9,000 people at the school. san jose police releasing surveillance video of a burglary. two men were caught on camera smashing the glass door at tequila's taqueria on leigh avenue last june. the men cleaned out the register and took off. if you recognize these men,

donald trump's plane trouble yesterday that made him late for a rally in arkansas. so from heartbreak to happiness for some bay area girl scouts who won a sleepover at levi's stadium. 1200 local scouts were challenged to sell 600 boxes of cookies each. their reward, a slumber party on the 50-yard line at levi's stadium in may. well, they fulfilled their end of the bargain. the 49ers though canceled the event for a more lucrative concert but then realized they had made a mistake so they made good on the sleepover offer, just moved it a week later than the original date. speak of pr, when she is not doing weather, she is doing radio. and we have a few friends out there, don't we? >> we do. i was visiting our sister station live 105 earlier this morning right here. >> there you go. >> who doesn't love kevin klein? everybody loves him! they have been talking about the super bowl here on kpix 5

then a debilitatin he wanted to be a pro football player and rock star but then a debilitating injury sparked a new life of community service. sharon chin introduces us to the redwood city man who is this week's bay area jefferson award winner >> reporter: people often come to gary riekes wanting to learn one thing but they end up pursuing many skills. >> what we want to have is the best opportunity to help someone accomplish their goals. >> quick, quick! >> reporter: 5,000 people a month come to the nonprofit riekes center for human enhancement in menlo park.

gary originally started the center in his home in 1974. the former stanford wide receiver spent years recovering from a football injury and athletes would show up at his house. he would coach them on injury prevention. [ music ] and also since he was also a professional musician, gary would teach music. >> always very much of a wild west show. >> reporter: more than 20 years later, gary moved the center to this 40,000-square-foot warehouse. at first, the giant rental space didn't feel quite right. >> when the kids started coming, it was too intimidating. >> reporter: to bring that sense of warmth and joy from his home, gary actually ripped out the front of his house and installed it right here at the center. >> to have the spirit of you're walking into a home, so you feel at home right away. >> reporter: today, students aged 2 to 92 come to the riekes center with a variety of abilities and disabilities, from olympic athletes to musicians. they pay a fee to participate,

a third receive scholarships. they learn creative arts, athletics, nature and perform community service projects. >> there isn't a judgment on a person. it's what you want to do. and it doesn't matter if you're good, bad or whatever. it's what brings you joy? >> reporter: a staff of 50 teaches classes six days a week. students like mark wolohan also become mentors. he says gary teaches him to reach his potential. >> even if they are really, really difficult goals that few people achieve respectively, i actually believe they are attainable . >> reporter: the director says the key is riekes's atmosphere of systemmance. -- of acceptance. >> gary just really embodies that feeling of love and home. >> reporter: so for creating a supportive place to learn and grow for more than 40 years, this week's jefferson award in the bay area goes to gary riekes. sharon chin, kpix 5. today, the
