i'm frank mallicoat. it's beginning to warm up. we are coming to you live from sens restaurant inside super bowl city up a little high. we're almost ready for the countdown clock to just read hours to get rid of those days as kickoff is approaching just over two days now until super bowl sunday. the bands are really pouring into the bay area -- the fans are really pouring into the bay area. you can feel the excitement. we are getting right here on kpix 5, as well. your television home for super bowl 50. now, getting a ticket to one super bowl can be tricky enough. how about all 50? >> kpix 5's cate caugiran on the football fans who have been to the biggest game of the year every year. cate? >> reporter: that's right. frank and michelle, we have the honor of meeting this 16 super bowl elite here at moscow center just by the nfl experience that you see behind me. this group of 16 comprised of sports writers, photographers, groundskeepers and fans. they have all been to all 50

super bowls. the nfl presented them with a commemorative super bowl 50 coin. we spoke with san francisco native and 49ers fan larry jacobson. >> it's something i never saw coming. if somebody ever told me a year ago this would be coming i would laugh at them. so it's great to be honored and great to be part of super bowl 50. >> reporter: before the group of 16 was honored, joe brown nfl senior adviser to the commissioner hosted a roundtable discussion talking about the earliest memories of the super bowl including the merger of the afl and the nfl. but going back to larry, what he told me is that this is a really big deal. he said that he wants a writer, a photographer or an employee with the nfl. he was just simply a fan. reporting live near the nfl experience, cate caugiran, kpix 5. this super bowl weekend a 49ers star is up for a prestigious nfl award. 49ers wide receiver anquan bolden was introduced as the finallest for the walter peyton man of the year award.

it honors nfl players who contribute not only to the team but also to the community. >> the things that we do in the community is not for accolades. it's not to win awards. but it's because we truly feel in our heart that's the right thing to do. and we want to see people succeed and be successful in their lives, as well. >> also nominated for the man of the year award, new york giants quarterback eli manning and saints tight end ben watson. and the winner will be announced tomorrow night on the nfl honor show right here on kpix 5. let's take you outside for a live look at levi's stadium. that's ground zero. that's where it's all going to happen, the place where hundreds of millions will be watching around the world come sunday and many of course right here on kpix 5. in a few hours a field test of sorts. chopper 5 spotted mountain view st. francis high school football team arriving a little while ago. they are going to have a practice game today at levi's stadium to let cbs test its cameras and equipment before

sunday's kickoff. so what a thrill for those kids. uber is threatening a disruption. they are protesting a pay cut and they say they will do it again on sunday just as 70,000 fans try to get inside to watch the game. and today the super bowl teams are having their final full practices. they are closed to the media and the public. it's a last chance to test their game plans and special plays before the biggest game of the year. we're expecting crowds to build for the free concerts. tonight it's one republic on city stage in sue bierman park. they will be in blue after all from colorado. get here early because they limit the number of fans allowed in the venue. contributed to the designs and they will be auctioned off online until february 14. proceeds go to charity. lots more to see and talk about as we close in on super bowl 50. >> yeah. we sure do. it's a big weekend. join us for tonight's countdown to gold special tonight at 7:00. ken bastida and jennifer montana will get you ready for the game. happening today, long lines again at santa clara university. administrators are trying to protect students from a rare meningitis strain. anne makovec on the school's response. >> reporter: at least three students have contracted the strain known as serogroup b. two of the students are still in the hospital today and health officials are scrambling to prevent a full-on outbreak. the race is on to vaccinate 5400 students at santa clara university before an outbreak of meningococcal infection spreads. >> i know three people are infected and meningitis is bad so i'm trying to avoid it. >> reporter: two students live in a freshman dorm known as

swig hall and both are pledged with the pi kappa alpha fraternity. health officials have tracked down 200 people who have had contact with the infected students and gave them antibiotics just in case. the bacteria can be passed by spending a long period of time with someone or being in close proximity to him. the county health department wants all undergraduates to be vaccinated with men-b and today is the second free clinic they are holding here this week. >> once it gets into the bloodstream it can cause the disease and can spread to the brain tissues and cause meningitis. >> reporter: the symptoms of meningitis include the sudden onset of fever, headache and stiff neck. patients may also have nausea, vomiting, confusion and sensitivity to light. mall. police now say a 63-year-old woman who was hit in the head by a man with a baseball bat has died. sheryl sherwood was beaten and robbed as she walked to her car at the solano towne centre. police arrested 19-year-old david king in vallejo and they say sherwood's purse was found in his car. he is also suspected of a similar attack in vallejo the day before using a hammer. checking some other bay area headlines. san francisco's newest homeless shelter could be opening today. the city will offer about 150 beds inside a big warehouse at pier 80. they say it's to get them out of the el nino stormy weather. but homeless advocates say it's to hide san francisco's homeless problem during the super bowl. pacifica is seeing new damage from el nino storms. chopper 5 showing how the waves have carved out another hole along beach boulevard. crews have made some temporary repairs but a more permanent fix will take a lot longer. and berkeley police looking

for a pair of wannabe smash-and- grab robbers. store surveillance shows them crashing into the store on san pablo and gilman. they were after an atm machine inside but it was too heavy to remove. they got away and left a lot of damage. developing news in new york. take a look at this video of a huge crane just collapsing there. a tenant in a high-rise captures it as the equipment came toppling down on the streets of manhattan. reporter brian webb has the latest on the deadly accidents. >> reporter: eyewitness video shows the dramatic moments as a huge construction crane collapsed on the streets of manhattan. the crane taller than two city blocks came down around 8:30 this morning. >> i felt it, it felt like a -- felt like a bomb. >> you heard the boom and then run to the windows, and then i see a crane falling on the street. >> reporter: several cars were crushed including the one in which a lone fatality a 38-year-

old man had been sitting. the city's mayor says construction crews were in the process of securing the crane from weather when it collapsed. >> it was being moved into a secure position because by the manufacturer's instructions as winds topped 20 miles an hour. >> reporter: inspectors here at the scene are looking into not only what caused the collapse, but also at buildings in the area that were struck by the crane as it fell to the ground. >> one of the concerns is going to be destabilizing other structures in the area which with some of the previous crane collapses we have had, we know that's the case. >> reporter: the mayor said the crane passed inspection just yesterday and because of today's collapse he ordered all 409 cranes operating in the city to be secured. police and buildings department investigations are under way. brian webb for cbs news, new york. >> another victim of el nino. what's happening to a century old santa cruz county landmark

candidates ahead of him in the latest poll. craig boswell, cbs news, manchester, new hampshire. >> tomorrow night seven of the nine remaining republican contenders will debate. some spectacular pictures coming out of japan. this is a violent eruption of an active volcano. rivers of lava can be seen rolling down the slopes. you can even see what it looks like flashes of lightning inside the eruption there. the volcano is on the island of kyushu inside the pacific rim of fire. people are being kept more than a mile away from the volcano. let's check in with roberta who is about to take quite the ride in livermore. >> i guess. >> reporter: how about that. i'm here at the livermore airport. you can see the tower behind me. it's a gorgeous friday. we have wind-swept blue skies. i do say wind-swept. we have a bit of a breeze. i'm here to jump on the good year blimp.

it's going to be landing way over there in the distance. can you see where all those cars have gathered? but meanwhile, until that blimp comes i thought i would do a little bit of research. i found out that the blimp is celebrating its 49th year of covering the super bowl. the first initial televised good year blimp flight was in 1967. so it has some history with the super bowl. it also is going to be around here in the bay area. you will see it in the sky for at least the next three days. over the next three days in livermore, look how empty the runway is now. we counted five jets. but i was told between now and sunday there's going to be 93 jets all privately owned landing right here! so everybody can go to the super bowl. i tried to find out who has these jets but they wouldn't let me know that. what i do know is the super bowl forecast. it's going to be gorgeous, low 70s, abundance of sunshine. clear skies, a few clouds, temperatures in fact 50s just

about every where. sunny skies, east breeze. mild and even warmer conditions over the weekend. we do have one thing you need to know about and that's the beach hazard statement for some very rough riptides and some strong currents. now, let's get to the maps here. we have our particle wind that we refer to. the map shows where the jet stream is. high pressure is building. as it does near or record warmth by monday. let's take a look at what numbers you can expect in the state of california this weekend. we are talking about 40s in the greater lake tahoe area. so that's spring-like skiing. from you heading to northstar, go, go, go! we have a sunset tonight at 5:37 p.m. temperatures today into the 50s and mid-60s. extended forecast calls for nothing but sunshine and record warmth by monday. we are live at livermore. we are hanging out here, gang. we are waiting for the blimp. we'll be right back. , ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
