waves are breaking at over 24 feet! >> reporter: yeah. huge waves. they had a little bit of slow start because of some fog this morning but the weather is gorgeous right now. the waves are huge. they are start the semi finals of this competition. you can see spectators here to watch with bated breath. they are tearing it up along the coast of half moon bay. >> the best of the best. we're talking -- it's dangerous for someone to go out in waves like this. >> reporter: the "titans of mavericks" is a one-day invitation-only event for 24 surfers taking on waves rising between 20 and 40 feet. >> it's a matter of being in the right position. all these guys are great surfers. >> reporter: the surfers are competing about a half mile off pillar point far from the coastline. the spectators can't see much from here. many are gathering at viewing

parties to see video of the competition from choppers overhead. in tv, we call it technical difficulties. >> hopefully, we try to sneak there. let's have a look. >> reporter: which is exactly what law enforcement officers don't want you to do. check out what happened in 2010 when spectators on the beach were hit with a rogue wave. and today officers are keeping off the bluff. >> it's unpredictable and unstable. there's natural erosion happening. >> reporter: they want everyone to leave the tricks to the guys who suited up for the competition of their lives. >> i'm thinking about them and i'm hoping them be safe. i know a few of the guys. >> reporter: it's a dangerous sport even if you are not into surfing, you can see some of these pictures are impressive. we are down to 12 competitors right now as we enter the semi finals. so 12 men out, 12 men in. the contest will be going on for another couple of hours

this afternoon. live near half moon bay, anne makevoc, kpix 5. >> amazing to watch,anne, thank you. to help protect the environment spectators are not allowed on the bluffs and beaches from ocean boulevard in half moon bay to bernal avenue in moss beach. san jose police have found the car they say was involved in a deadly hit-and-run that killed a bicyclist. officers found that red honda del sol around 8: 45 this morning in a parking lot outside a mexican restaurant on south winchester boulevard. no one was inside and the driver is still on the loose. the crash happened about midnight at winchester and driftwood drive. people saw the honda leave after hitting the bike. the man riding the bicycle died. he is unidentified. we are getting our first look at the man accused of shooting and killing a richmond police officer in his home. 30-year-old robert vega is in police custody now. he is the father of that officer's grandchild. vega is accused of shooting officer gus vegas in a domestic

dispute in vallejo. richmond police say vegas was a 15-year veteran of the force. investigators are trying to identify a human skull found on 280 near san jose city college. a woman making the discoverly last night near richmond avenue after climbing a fence to look for a lost phone. firefighters and the chp responded found the skull as well as a femur nearby. the medical examiner came in and took it away. this was the second set of human bones found in santa clara county in the last two days. uber is paying millions to move on from class action suits regarding rider safety. the ridesharing company is playing $28.5 million to settle two suits that claim uber charged a safe ride fee meant to go towards background checks. the issue, uber doesn't do the same fingerprint checks required of taxi drivers. now uber plans to call the charge a booking fee. a judge still has to approve it. state health officials say it's safe to eat crab caught by

recreational fish en mer. a ban was listed because toxins are at lower or undetectable levels. but still no commercial crab season only recreational fishermen. >> we sell crab. we sell seafood. without that entity, it means that we're out one more step to have our restaurant run effectively. >> it's been very quiet. this is the time of season where we rely on the crab and rely on our customers coming in and looking for that fresh crab. >> within a week th department of fish & wildlife may let the season begin for commercial fishermen. the democratic presidential candidates are even in the polls. they each used last night's case to make their case to voters. republicans are focused on front-runner. cbs news' weijia jang has more. >> reporter: hillary clinton and bernie sanders squared off in a debate thursday night with

each claiming to be the right choice to succeed president obama. >> senator sanders said that president obama failed the presidential leadership test. and this is not the first time that he has criticized president obama. i don't think he gets the credit he deserves. >> madam secretary, that is a low blow. one of us ran against barack obama. i was not that candidate. >> reporter: the candidates are sending that message to african- american voters who make up a large percentage of the south carolina electorate. >> sadly in america today, in our economy, a whole lot of those poor people are african- american. >> the affordable care act has helped more blacks than any other group. >> reporter: republicans were attacking one man donald trump. >> negotiating a hotel in another country is not foreign policy. >> you can push down donald trump a little bit by electing somebody who is a solid conservative with a conservative record. >> all these guys.

administration building. police say they are not looking for suspects raising the possibility of a murder- suicide. parents came to pick up their students later in the morning after a lockdown was lifted. an attacker is dead and four hurt after a machete attack in ohio last night at a middle eastern restaurant in columbus. witnesses say a man stormed in went from table to table hitting people. police say he had talked with an employee about an hour beforehand. that suspect led police on a five mile car chase and then got out holding a machete and knife. >> vehicle stopped. he is trying to get out of the vehicle. >> he lunged across the hood at the officers. another officer in a cruiser fired a couple of shots at him and put him down. >> four people taken to the hospital. one is in critical condition. that dead attacker reportedly was a somalian and may have traveled overseas but it's unclear if he was a terrorist. a temporary cease-fire in syria is set to go into effect next week. the deal will allow food and

humanitarian aid to reach hostile areas. holly williams shows us what is at stake. >> reporter: syrian civilians are once again paying with their blood as the regime claws back terrible from rebels supported by russian aircraft. this week forces launches an assault on a town which had been a stronghold for the rebels. some of them armed by the u.s. we met abdul [ non-english language ] who runs a school in the town as he crossed the border into turkey. [ non-english language ] >> reporter: this shelling and air strikes are random, he told us. homes are destroyed and children's bodies lie in shreds on the ground. if this cease-fire plan doesn't succeed, 300,000 civilians could be cut off there as they were in the town of media under a siege by the government.

more than 40 people have starved to death. tens of thousands of syrians have fled the new offensive and tried to cross this border into the safety of turkey. but turkey already has more than 2 million syrian refugees and is reluctant to take more. holly williams, cbs news, on the turkey, syria border. today pope francis arrived in cuba for a historic meeting with the leader of the russian orthodox church. francis walked down from his plane in havana. he is scheduled to talk for two hours with the russian orthodox patriarch. they are expected to release a joint declaration on the plight of christians in iraq and syria. today's meeting is the first between them since the great schism of the year 1054. we are supposed to be extra careful about saving water now so why is bart dumping millions of gallons into the sewer? >> plus, a nasty crash that sent this car right up against a tree. >> from the kpix 5 weather

area. authorities arrived ar car > one person was killed when a car hit a tree in the sacramento area. authorities arrived around 8:30 and found it pointing up against the trunk of the tree in fair oaks. neighbors said it looked like the driver was speeding. it's under investigation. a bounty of water under san francisco streets is going down the drain. every year roughly 65 million gallons of water from the city's underground creeks and streams go to waste. powell station bart's busiest is at the center of the story. back in the 1960s, workers had

trouble tunneling to build it. at the time, the water table was lying only 20 feet below the surface. and the way the city diverted that water hasn't changed for decades. >> they were constantly having to pump water out of that station. if we didn't then it would flood. the water is currently going straight into san francisco's sewer. >> now a company called nrg says it could use the water for its business providing steam heat to downtown buildings. and bart's glad to give it away for free. but nrg would have to treat it first. benicia city planning commission is fighting big oil. in a unanimous vote the planning commission rejected vallejo refinery's -- valero refinery's request to import oil on two 50 car trains every day. the planning commission heard testimony from over 7:0people over four days and now valero is expected to appeal to benicia's city council. if you are trying to rent an apartment in one part of the bay area, you might be out of

luck. according the research firm realtytrac san jose has the lowest vacancy rate in the country, .2%. that means that out of every 1,000 homes, two might be vacant. >> this is a very good time to be a seller of real estate throughout the bay area. and it's not a bad time to be a landlord because you can take care of your vacancies very quickly. >> the bay area's resurgent economy is driving some potential home buyers out of the market which, in turn, sent rent prices through the roof. foster city-based visa just bought a big piece of the mobile payment company "square." it's now its second biggest shareholder. visa has been working on its own payment technology. san francisco-based square went public in november. tonight, "the amazing race" against its 28 -- begins its 28th season here on cbs. i talked with the host about the long running reality contest and this year's racers. >> we take them off the grid.

on kpix 5. time for a look at our weekend forecast. >> let's find out. here's roberta gonzales with more on that. >> good afternoon, everybody. sure, the "titans of mavericks" are at pillar point off the half moon bay coast with a high surf advisory. even once they crown the champion and put that beautiful lei around his neck the advisories will be in effect until tomorrow night at 8 p.m. this means over the weekend if you are heading to the beach, never turn your back on an angry ocean. the possibility of sneakers waves, too. partly cloudy skies today. we remain mild even though a couple of degrees cooler than yesterday. sunshine and warm conditions over the weekend and all the way through the holiday on monday. i am putting rain back in the forecast on wednesday. these clouds all thin high cirrus clouds associated with an area of low pressure that's banging up against the northwestern section of the state of california, bringing rain there, leaving us dry because we're trying to erode that strong ridge of high

pressure that's been dominating our entire state forecast for the past week. we still will remain dry long range although i'm putting light rain in the forecast on wednesday. we'll turn stormy by the end of february. and then again after march 7. now, what has this done, what kind of impact to our snowpack? we are down 11% for the week. it's springtime skiing. i got to tell you, spring-like conditions in the greater lake tahoe area, we have a firm base. look at the dry weather pattern pushing 80 on president's day and on tuesday. and by the way, san francisco giants fanfest is tomorrow at at&t park. the weather could not be better for the boys of springtime. 70 degrees. make it a great day.

take a look at this. streets and homes covered in ice. this is in scranton, pennsylvania. but this wasn't nature's doing. a pipe broke and it froze. dozens of people were evacuated. the raiders are staying in oakland. the team reached a tentative deal to extent the lease for the coliseum through the 2016 season. they can possibly work out a deal to keep them in the city long-term. the owner had been thinking of going to other cities like l.a., san antonio and las vegas. >> we have agreed in principle to a one-year lease extension to play our home games at the oakland coliseum for the 2016 season. >> the team has an option to stay at the oakland coliseum for two years after that. dangers at the dog park. our pet expert joins us with

swallowing the tacks. it's happening more often. let's talk to our pet expert dr. jill. she is here with coby. a beautiful pup. how are you? so is this happening a lot? do you see this in your practice? are people coming in? >> in my practice not so much but it is definitely in our area in the bay area. we are seeing more of this not kind way of behaving toward pets. the poison meatballs, now we have the tacks. i think it's so important to be vigilant when you take your pet out as a result. i always say you to be careful what your pets are picking up off the ground but the tack is tricky because -- >> they can eat it. >> you may not see it. >> so what do you do? how do you know if your dog might have swallowed something like that? >> well, if they ingested something that's poisonous they are going to start showing symptoms maybe vomit. they may get lethargic. you want to immediately take them to the vet hospital. don't call, just run. and hopefully we'll be able to make them vomit and then do whatever we need to do to save their lives. the tack one is interesting. again, you'll probably see some signs of not wanting to eat and
