conservative justice -- ant scalia found dead at a ranc texas. live from the cbs bay area studios, this is ktix 5 news. shocking news from the circuit court. long-time conservative justice antony scalia found dead at a ranch in texas. good evening. >> this is a special postdebate edition of kpix news. before tonight's debate there was a tribute to justice scalia. candidates paused for a moment of silence. coming up in a few minutes, more on the debate tonight and how the circuit court is now front and center in the upcoming elections. at the nation circuit court, the flag has been lowered to half staff. scalia served on the high court for almost 0 years.

justice scalia died in his sleep while on a trip to texas. he's being remembered for his intellect and for his interpretation of the constitution. >> reporter: circuit court justice antonin scalia made his mark during his three decades on the circuit court. he asked more questions and made more comments than any other justice, and was known for his outside personality and brilliant legal mind. according to the u.s. marshall service, he was found dead this morning when he didn't show up for breakfast at a resort in west texas. ronald reagan chose scahia for the high court in 1986, and he was the longest serving member overthe current court. >> we honor his extraordinary service to hour nation, and remember one of the towering legal figures of our time. >> reporter: he was born to italian immigrants in trenton, new jersey. his family later moved to queens. college took him to georgetown university, and harvard law school. one of the staunchest conservative members of the court, he was a strong advocate

for gun rights, privacy, and he consistently advocated for abortion. he talked about one of the most famous decisions that led to president george w. bush taking the white house instead of al gore. >> the national interest -- >> the remedy for a case is always subject to the court's discretion. >> reporter: chief justice john roberts called scalia an extraordinary jurist, admired by his colleagues >> his absence on this court can not be overstated, because it will change the balance of the circuit court. the circuit court is narrowly divide by conservatives for liberals. >> his death enables president obama to nominate a third justice to the high court, but he may not be able to get past the republican congress before the next presidentiall. cbs news, dallas. >> at the heart of the political fight is the balance of power on the court.

scalia was the key conservative pourses, and sources say obama will nominate a place of employment. ever. senator majority leader mitch con nell has said scalia should not be replaced until a new president is elected, but there are several big cases awaiting rulings by the circuit court, including on abortion and affirmative action. so here are the eight remaining justices on the circuit court. it is now split evenly between liberal and conservative. so what does this mean for decisions thatnd in a 4-4 ruling? the lower court's decision will substantial doubt. back in the bay area tonight, an alameda man who owes the feds over a hundred million dollars is still missing tonight. john nelson was last seen on tuesday, the same day he was due in court. in 2009, the fcc sued beck over a get-rich quick scam. officials say he used info her issues to promote a shady real estate system,

cheating thousands of consumers out of millions of dollars. we spoke to one of beck's family members today. >> i don't think he was trying to flee from punishment, if people are thinking that. i think that in his mind, this would make things better, make problems go away for the family. but -- >> the family says they have hired a private gator, and they will continue their search this weekend. still no suspects tonight in the attacks on the golden gate bridge. two pedestrians were hit by one of these sharp blow-gun darts while walking across the span yesterday. investigators say they were likely launched from a car going northbound on the bridge. it happened sometime 2 and 0. one woman was hit in her knee. another man was struck in his thigh. >> stated that the dart came at him, and was able to actually go through his jeans and into his leg by about 2 inches. >> both victims were treated and released at the scene. investigators are trying to

pull nearby surveillance video so they can catch whoever is responsible. animal advocates are offering a thousands-car reward for anyone who can help find whoever scattered thumb tax at a bay area dog park. more than 200 of them were found a week ago in heck loose. pita says two dogs were hurt, and the man mall rights group is offering another thousands dollars for the installation of security cameras there. today members of the world- wide marijuana community geared here in san francisco. their focus the business of pot. kpix mark kelly tells us all about it. >> reporter: nothing makes candidates seem more conventional than holding a convention for it can't hurt anybody. >> reporter: the international cannabis business conference in san francisco showcases new ways to tote it, new ways to smoke it. >> free rolls. more and more easily. >> reporter: and new potential jurors. >> we hope to cure cancer.

firew tonight in south carolina. >> reporter: the republican presidential candidates took to the me bait stage, and the first questions turned to the death of circuit court justice antonin scalia. president obama announced he will name a preplace of employment, but the candidates argued it should be up to the next president. >> i would like the president to just -- put the country first. >> the senate needs to stand strong and say, "we're not going to give up the u.s. circuit court for a generation by allowing barack obama making one more liberal appointee. >> that quickly turned to disagreement. >> jeb is so wrong. >> reporter: things got heated between donald trump and former governor jeb bush over the war in iraq. >> obviously the war in iraq, a big fat mistake. george bush made a mistake. we can make mistake, but that one was a beauty. >> while donald trump was building a reality tv show, my brother was building a security ap rat us

to keep us safe. >> reporter: this debate could be crucial for the candidates. the south carolina primary is just a week away and may decide who continues in this race. for macco rubio this was a chance to redeem himself after faultering in the last debate. >> i'm going to have a tax plan that's pro family, because the family is the most important institution in society. >> reporter: voters go the poll on december 20th. greenville, south carolina. >> and political analyst melissa cane is joining us. at the very beginning, before all of the fireworks we saw there, before all that started, there was a unanimity of opinion, and it centered around the circuit court justice to replace antonin scalia. >> unsurprisingly the candidates did not say, "we think president obama will pick a perfectly qualified person to replace sca l irsa." they all seemed to agree that the next president, of course hoping to be one of them, would be the person that picks the next circuit court justice, and they

did all emphasize this shows you how important the election is. >> it all started out peacefully, everyone agreeing with each other, and than it went south. >> holly molly it did. really amazing. for anyone at home who says, "debates are boring and waiting for and exciting one, here it is. watch it on replay. there are a few candidateston stage when you have only have six as opposed to ten or 11. a lot more cross talk. at one point the moderator actually saying i'm going to stop this car -- turn around this car like a blowingered parent. that's how much cross talk there was. one person tonight was jeb bushel. he went at donald trump very hard. of course mr. trump, as he does, gave it right back >> while donald trump was building a reality tv show, my brother was building a security ap rat us to keep us safe, and i'm proud of what he did. >> [ cheering ].

started speaking span niche the midst of the crowd booing and the moderator trying to interrupt. it was something else. cue the fireworks. let's talk about the audience. there was so much participation. you could tell who was for and who was against who. very lively. was there a little alcohol involved? . >> participation is a very nice way to say -- the control of the tickets to the debate is held by the party itself. so south carolina state republican party, who distributes them, a lot of speculation on the twitter. , for example, that the cocktail hour was robust tonight, and that might have led to the participation, as you put it. so it was really something we have not seen as much of in an earlier debate. >> there was real distinct booing. it was very over the top. >> especially of donald trump. remember, the republican party is the one doling out the ticket, so anyone who i said, like donald trump, antiestablish. , criticizes it republican party, these are not his people in the audience. not entirely surprising they booed him. they liked candidates like

it didn't work out the way we wanted. 61 in concord, 58 in san francisco, and 60s in santa rosa. high surf advisory expired. the surf is on for coastal locations with surfs up to 12 to 9 feet. out the door, a little wit of fog. increasing sun. as the day goes on, low 50s to start out with to mid-67 70s around much of the bay area. sunday looks warm as well. here's how it looks high atop the west coast. high pressure is just a beam. the big sur coastline. while they're getting smacked in seattle with rain day after day after day, that moist stream over them, it to the north. the futurecast bears out it's not going to change much. that high keeps us dry for awhile any way. for tomorrow if you're headed out of the bay area, 76 in sacramento. same thing for reading. eureka to medecino, cooler and cloud year. for us it's going to be nice with temperatures in the 70s, patchy fog early.

otherwise sun for us sunday. next chance of rain does come in late wednesday and lingers into thursday. but not going to amount to much. forecast highs for tomorrow will be the headline, with 73 in the city, 75 in morgan hills. san jose, 76 degrees tomorrow. 75 in lo saldo. 70s will do it for much of the east bay, with 74 degrees in danville. brentwood at 74, and far field 74. out in the north bay, nice. plenty of sun and 72 at petaluma, 74 in kenfield, and 74 for beautiful mill valley. and up in ukia, going to be in the mid-70s as well. the extended forecast, we see president's day coming in mild, but warm. temperatures will be in the 7 0s. and the extended forecast, we've got another staying in the 70s right through tuesday. then the numbers fall. so does the rain. late on wednesday. wednesday we'll have a view of clearing shoes. friday and saturday, we'll go to mostly cloudy conditions. so warm, cold, running hot and

out right lead. mickelson carted a 6-under 66 to take a 2-shot lead into sunday: it was either win or don't come home. that was the ultimatum given to his son to beat seth curry in the 3-point contest. thompson was looking for revenge after losing last year. curry was in danger of being eliminated in the 1st round, but he made his last two shots, and the final round was his flash -- you can't go wrong with either one of these guys. thompson caught fire, making his last 6 shots to beat curry 27-23, getting back at curry for last year's contest, earning bragging rights for this next year over his tam mate, and he can go home as well. sanford looking pretty upset at number 11 oregon. the cardinal leading by 7. door indian pickens, he throws up the ally oop to josh karma. he's stronger, and make it a 9- point game. the ducks rallied, final seconds oregon with a
