conservative supreme court justice antonin scalia. more on that in just a mome. first breaking news... a fi burns some of san francisc' iconic victorian homes. new word on the death of justice scalia. >> and a fire burns from the - - and entiat - - and iconic victorian home. claims could be seen from several blocks away. maria is near the scene. maria? >> reporter: they just got the fire under control more than one hour ago.

50 people are now homeless tonight. 111-year-old was hurt and firefighters are still on scene. we will look at video shot by an eyewitness. we spoke to a man who says he was coming home from dinner as he rounded the corner in this is what happened. >> thank you god they came as fast as they did and did such an excellent j ob. they really saved us. >> scary stuff to come home from. and a lot of homes were evacuated on the block. firefighters fear that they would block home to home.

texas. ronald reagan chose him in 1986 and he was the longest- serving member of the current court. >> we are honoring his extraordinary service to our nation and remember one of the towering legal figures of our time. >> reporter: he was born in new jersey. college took them to georgetown and harvard law school. one of the staunchest members of the court, he was a strong advocate for gun rights, privacy, and he consistently voted to let states outlaw abortion. and he talked about one of the most famous decisions that led to distant bush taking the white house. in the national interest they've got to get this over with. the remedy for a case is always up to this - - up to the courts. >> reporter: he called him extraordinary, admired and treasured by his colleagues. >> his absence cannot be overstated because it will

change potentially the balance of the supreme court. it is currently narrowly divided. five conservative scuff for liberals. >> reporter: his death allows president obama to nominate if there justice. but he may not be able to get back for the next election. here are the eight remaining justices. his death means there is an even split between liberals and conservatives. he spoke to students last fall and a professor tells us he certainly made an impression. >> he sparked a lot of controversy when he was there. it's really because his views and influences in a number of closely decided cases, same-sex marriage just in the past year, abortion and gun control,

citizens united and campaign financing, they are hot button issues. >> he also served as a visiting professor back in the 80s. no sign of the man who owes millions to the feds. he has been missing for several days and miranda talked to families and friends that were desperately trying to track him down. >> nobody said this was going to happen. >> reporter: he was a scam artist ordered to pay $113 million over a get rich quick scam. >> we are just doing the best we can. - - he was a father, husband, father and grandfather. >> they know he was missing but they don't really understand. i tried to talk about it. >> reporter: he promised consumers they could make a lot of money by purchasing homes at

auction and flipping or renting them but the trade commission sued him one decade ago saying it was all a scam. in total he made $92 million off of his infomercials and more than $175 million on personal coaching services. >> he's had a lot of stress. i think he has been really depressed. >> his wife dropped him off in oakland. bound for san francisco, he never made it. >> it was the night before he disappeared. it was our biggest lead. >> reporter: his son-in-law led a group of volunteers. they canvassed neighborhoods and put up flyers. >> if he is watching, what would you like to say? and his family is missing him. >> he found some answers in his search.
