hillary clinton takes nevad the democratic caucuses --- giving your realtime captioner is linda marie macdonald. live from the cbs bay area studios, this is kpix 5 news. i am so, so thrilled and so grateful to all of my supporters out there. >> hillary clinton takes nevada in the democratic caucuses giving her campaign a jolt heading into super tuesday. >> and in the tremendous show of strength in the south, donald trump wins in south carolina. good evening, i'm juliette goodrich. >> i'm brian hackney. the contests were held today in two states. nevada held caucuses for the democrats in south carolina it was a republican primary. >> and here's how the numbers shake out in south carolina. trump takes a commanding lead at 32%. senators rubio and cruz are battling for second place. >> let's go live now to south

carolina. cbs reporter craig boswell is in columbia where the polls closed 90 minutes ago reporter: good evening from ted cruz headquarters where cruz will be addressing his supporters here later this evening. every time his name pops up on the big screen, you will hear a very large cheer from the crowd so that's what you're going to be seeing and hearing behind us as we talk throughout the evening. it is senator ted cruz and marco rubio battling for that second place spot here in south carolina. look, people were tell us all throughout the day that they were deciding late making up their minds going into the polling place some people changing their minds on the spot. cbs news projects donald trump has won the south carolina republican primary. ted cruz and marco rubio trailed. earlier volunteers at cruz's call center worked to get out the vote. >> bring all your family and friends to vote, too, okay?

>> reporter: today cruz attended the funeral for supreme court justice antonin scalia. this week south carolina governor nikki haley endorsed marco rubio. jeb bush in the bottom greeted with a message about donald trump. >> trump can't win. plain and simple. >> reporter: john kasich is out of town campaigning to standing room only crowds in massachusetts ahead of super tuesday. these contests now -- these delegates are split proportionally. so going to march 1 you still have a three-man race and all those 12 to 13 caucuses and primaries will be split

proportionally. it may be extended into may or longer. very exciting as it goes forward certainly for reporters covering all this. ted cruz people were concerned here in south carolina that donald trump won as much of the evangelical vote as he did. back to you. >> you know, craig, kasich suggested that if jeb bush didn't do any better than he did that he might drop out. have you heard anything about that? >> reporter: right. no. well, we have heard from [ indiscernible ] we have asked the candidates all week. jeb bush says he will go on into the super tuesday race. he has released his schedule for next week. john kasich is a popular midwestern governor. he is going to move into the super tuesday states. in fact he is in massachusetts campaigning today and not here in south carolina. now, jeb bush, very underwhelming performance in south carolina. i'm sure his donors will ask question. will the money dry up? that's going to be possibly a

problem for the former florida governor because in those super tuesday states you can't visit all those states. you have to reach people through advertising, on television, and that costs money. >> craig boswell, thank you. here's the breakdown for the democrats in the nevada caucuses. hillary clinton wins over bernie sanders but not by much. 53 to 47%. after the win former president clinton joined his wife. >> we never doubted each other. although some may have doubted us. this one is for you. >> i called up secretary clinton and congratulated her and her staff with a victory here in nevada. they ran very aggressive effective campaign and i applaud them for their efforts. >> sanders says his campaign has "the wind at our backs as

we head toward super tuesday." the multi-state voting contest is march 1. dignitaries, politicians, judges and thousands of mourners gathered today to remember justice antonin scalia. ♪[ music ] >> pallbearers carried his casket down of the aisle of the basilica of the national shrine of the immaculate conception in washington during this morning's service. he was remembered as a deeply religious man with love for his country. his son paul a catholic priest held back tears as he remembered his father. >> we have been thrilled to read and hear the many words of praise and admiration for him for his intellect, his writings, his speeches, his influence and so on. but more important to us and to him is he was dad. >> the eight remaining justices on the supreme court also came to pay their respects. it has happened again. another law enforcement officer in the bay area has lost his

gun. kpix 5's mark kelly tells us why such incidents can put the community on edge reporter: an i.c.e. agent in ingleside said his pistol and cell phone on the roof of his car friday morning -- he drove off. >> you hate to be about a gun lost or stolen. >> reporter: jeff harp spent years in the fbi where he taught other agents the proper way to handle their weapons. >> whether it's in the holster or in your hand, wherever it's at you never set it down because you never lose control of it. >> reporter: here's a picture of the lost gun from the manufacturer's website. it's a .40-caliber hk pistol. not the first time a bay area federal agent has lost a gun. in july a gun stolen from an agent's car was used to shoot and kill kate steinle on san francisco's pier 14. and in september, a muralist was shot to death in oakland with a gun stolen from an

immigration officer's vehicle. >> you just try to prevent it but it happens. >> reporter: jeff says if it does happen, step one is to tell law enforcement which is what happened in the ingleside case. still, that gun could very well end up in the wrong hands. >> unfortunately, guns with worth money and they are used in crimes. so it's going to be tough probably to recover the gun. >> reporter: in san francisco, mark kelly, kpix 5. >> i.c.e. is conducting its own investigation. less than a half-hour ago the chinese new year parade kicked off. the annual event was voted top ten best parade in the world and draws hundreds of thousands every year. it all started back in 1860 to introduce the city to chinese culture. more than 150 years later, the celebration goes on. still ahead, the fallout over apple's battle with the fbi over encryption is about to heat up. the new plan to fight back

hospitalized in a stabbing outside a south bay bar overnight around 12:30 this morning on south white road. police found the injured men in a parking lot of the elegant pub. one died at the hospital, the other man's injuries are not life-threatening. the "mercury news" reports police talked to many in a large crowd of largely uncooperative people. no suspects have been identified. today demonstrations were held across the country including here in san francisco to support a former new york police officer. 28-year-old rookie peter liang was convicted of manslaughter for a deadly shooting in 2014. rallies were held in more than 40 cities. the asian says he accidentally fired his weapon during a patrol in a dark stairwell in inside a public housing project. the bullet ricocheted and killed an innocent bystander. supporters in the asian community say he is a scapegoat in the backlash against police brutality. he will be sentenced in april. and backlash is growing over

apple's battle with the fbi to unlock an iphone. apple supporters are planning to protest in more than 30 cities on tuesday. the protests are organized by the internet group, fight for the future. the gatherings will come a week after the fbi went to court to force apple to weaken the security built into most iphones. the fbi says it will help their terrorism investigation in san bernardo. toys 'r us is the latest major retailer to remove hoverboards from its website. the company says it's effective immediately. it follows the government's notice yesterday that hoverboards are unsafe and may ask manufacturers to stop building them. many have caught fire while people are riding them and others burst into flames while being charged causing damage to homes and garages. the funeral today of harper lee was private. harper died yesterday in her sleep in her alabama home. she was 89. a few dozen family members

they're twins. they told our cate cauguiran.. it was lucky sign. two bay area sisters hit the lotto jackpot both of them. they are twins. they told our cate caugiran it was thanks to a luck sign. >> it's a one in three million chance. >> reporter: these san ramon twins beat the odds. >> you never know it's going to be you, like, especially something that, like, big. >> reporter: something big that started with something little earlier this month. >> i looked up at my windshield and i saw a yellow ladybug. >> reporter: she took it's sign so she made a pit stop at fast and easy mart to pick up some lottery tickets including two set for life scratchers for her and her twin laura poorman. the twins have been buying tickets together since they were 18 carefully following their mother's advice. >> to find a place with a light out. >> reporter: mom's advice paid off. lisa says she was parked at her son's school when she found out they won $6 million.

we are just getting word that jeb bush is in fact dropping out of the race for president. he failed to win over voters angry with washington not wanting to send another bush to the white house. in the last minute or so a brief statement about his decision to drop out of the 2016 presidential race because despite his father's promises for all of these years, they decided obviously because he is behind hillary clinton right now, um, he is tired of wasting his time and he is dropping out. so that's the latest information. we'll have more on this coming up at 6:30. also now in most industries women are paid less than men for the same position and a new study shows that may be true in the online world, as well. a study in the journal "science" says female sellers on ebay get less money than men for the same stuff so according to the study women received about 97 cents for every dollar men received for used items. but with new items women received about 80 cents on average for every dollar men
