live from the cbs bay area studios,s this is kpix 5 news. is this a great night or what. we just won nevada. >> when you win, it's beautiful, and we're going to start. we are going to start winning for our country. >> a victory lap for donald trump and hillary clinton, and the republicans are dealing with yet another shakeup. but first, breaking news, a gunman in michigan driving around firing at random. he killed six people. there are three separate shooting scenes tonight. >> it's all happening in kalamazoo michigan. beside the six dead. several other were wounded. four people were killed at a cracker barrell restaurant. deputies say the shooting may be connected to a crime scene earlier where a woman was shot several times in a town home.

she's expected to survive. minutes ago, we got this update, police officers believe they now have the shooter in custody. they say they apprehended him in downtown kalamazoo without any problems. 6 people killed in another mass shooting. and we will see how the candidates running for president react to the latest shooting. just a few hours ago, jeb bush called it quits and we have team coverage on two big contests. we start with craig boswell in south carolina, and craig, a big night for trump. >> reporter: juliet, good evening, a big night, the voteers have spoken, putting donald trump on the top. taking a large majority away from ted cruz. ted cruz and marco rubio in a nail biter for second place, and jeb bush, disappointment, he is now out of the race. >> i i want to thank everybody. i love you all.

again, south carolina we will never forget you. >> jeb bush finished in the bottom three. he told supporters this was his last primary as a 2016 presidential candidate. >> the people of iowa and new hampshire and south carolina have spoken and i really respect their decision. so tonight i am suspending my campaign. >> reporter: south carolina voters said the most important quality in a candidate is that he shares their values and he said the most important issue is terrorism. for cruz and rubio, a strong finish in north carolina means 600 delegates are at stake. >> we can stand together with a proven, consistent, constitutional conservative, and bring back morning in america. >> the 21st century movement is the son of a bartender and maid from cuba who stands one step closer to being the 45th 45th president of the united states

of america. >> reporter: donald trump will try to make it three in a row tuesday at the nevada caucuses. as for delegates, keep this in mind, if this remains a three- man race going forward, this is going to extend the race, these delegates are being rewarded proportionately. these contests don't become win or take all until march 15th. juliet and brian, back to you. now danielle nottingham. hillary won the nevada caucuses but bernie sanders didn't do too bad either. >> reporter: bernie sanders had the hillary clinton camp biting their nails for a good part of the week after his big win in new hampshire, bernie sanders put a lot of resources into nevada to put up a good fight here. hillary clinton savored her

victory over bernie sanders in the nevada democratic caucuses. >> i am so thrilled and so grateful to all of my supporters out there. >> reporter: women voted for clinton 57-41%. but entrance polls exposed some weaknesses. clinton lost support among voters who value honesty. sanders was favored among younger women voters. >> i believe that on super tuesday, we have got an excellent chance to win many of those states. >> reporter: this was the first test for the democratic presidential candidate at courting minority voters. >> democrats gathered at hundreds of caucus fightings including a handful on the las vegas strip. >> i kind of want to put my stamp on bernie getting that close finish maybe. >> reporter: for some voters, it comes down to electability in november. >> she has been about children and families her whole life, and i connect to that, and i

believe in her. >> thank you all, god bless you. >> reporter: clinton now has momentum heading into the south carolina primary next week. and clinton did well with voters who wanted experience. bernie sanders won the latino vote here, and both candidates are looking to the future. hillary clinton attended an event in houston texas, and sanders will be in south carolina tomorrow. live in las vegas, danielle nottingham, kpix 5. someone left a pipe bomb in downtown vallejo, emily turner tells us this bomb may have been a message to the mayor. >> reporter: it was a close call for one woman in vallejo when she discovered a pipe bomb outside her coffee shop and called police. >> the citizen happened to be at work today and discovered the pipe bomb and didn't know what it was. >> reporter: at first she told

the times herald she thought it was trash. then she realized it was dangerous because she had actually seen something just like it blow up before in the very same spot. that location, the 400 block of plume is also suspect. >> this business is across the street from the courthouse in vallejo, and next to a law office, which belongs to the mayor. >> reporter: the napa bomb squad was called in to deal with the explosive and the vallejo police department is looking for the story behind it and how it got there. this is something they say they're taking very seriously. >> from all accounts it appears to be a real pipe bomb, and it was a barrel fused type. it is under investigation. >> reporter: of course as soon as we get anymore information on that investigation we'll be sure to pass that forward to you. in the meantime, we did reach out to the mayor and try and get his opinion on what happened tonight. he was not available for

comment. emily turner report live, on kpix 5. kpix 5's mark kelly says the gun wasn't stolen, the agent drove away without it. >> reporter: an ice agent in engelside's neighborhood says he admits he set his pistol and cell phone on the roof of his car and drove off. >> you hate to hear about a gun being lost and stolen. >> reporter: kpix 5 security analyst jeff harp spent years in the fbi where he tag other agents the -- taught other agents the proper way to handle a weapon. >> you never set the weapon down because you never want to lose control of it. >> reporter: here's a picture of the lost gun. a 40 caliber hk pistol and not the first time a bay area federal agent has lost a gun. in july, a gun stolen from an agent's car was used to shoot and kill kate steinley on san

francisco's pier 14, and in september, a muralist was shot to death in oakland with a gun stolen from an immigration officer's vehicle. >> you try to do what you can to prevent it from happening but it does happen. >> reporter: and jeff says if it does happen, step one is to tell law enforcement, which is what happened in the engelside case. still, that gun could very well end up in the wrong hands. >> guns are worth money. guns are used in crime. it's going to be tough to recover the gun. >> reporter: in san francisco, mark kelly kpix 5. if one state lawmaker has his way. video cameras will record everyone buying a gun at stores in california. sacramento assemblyman kevin mccarty says a bill he introduced will help keep firearms out of his hand. mirroring an ordinance in san francisco that prompted the last gun store to close, and at the state capitol, reporter

adrian moore says there's talk of forcing bartenders to take a special class. >> reporter: it could mean more hours in the classroom before they ever do this. >> there was the initial mumble and grumble out it, oh, no, i have to do more training but it's all about safety. >> reporter: assembly bill 2121 would require the employees have beverage service training, cutting down on those being overserved dui and alcohol related death. >> it's common sense to me, that you know, looking at someone, we have been in the situation where you have seen someone clearly with too much alcohol. >> reporter: servers would have three months to complete the training after they're hired and must take a refresher case every three years. >> emphasize you want to pay attention to changes. >> reporter: sam hubbard has been an instructor for five years.

he says the biggest challenge is tracking behavioral changes in the people being served. hehe believes the proposal has the potential for saving lives. >> this may be somebody's worst night of their life that really screwed everything and you're the person that could have helped save that. >> reporter: while she thinks most servers know the legal ramifications of overserving, there are some that can push it. >> i have seen someone bar tend and serve someone they shouldn't because they wanted a tip or whatever. >> reporter: a new measure that could make saying no a more clear cut decision. >> and the bill will be heard in committee on march 19th. shows of support across the country today including san francisco for a former new york police officer. itit will-year-old rook -- 28- year-old rookie peter liang was convicted of manslaughter for a deadly shooting in 2015.

liang says he fired his weapon during patrol in a dark stairwell inside a public housing building. the bullet ricocheted and killed an innocent bartender. supporters say liang has become a scapegoat. rallies and protests were held in 40 cities, including san francisco. liang will be sentenced in april. from a protest to a parade and hours later in san francisco, the big chinese new year parade, organizers expected 750,000 people to line the streets of the parade route to ring in the year of the monkey. and with it, a lot of fire power. 600,000 fire crackers to be impact. this is the largest lunar new year parade outside asia. >> you know, we have over 200 people just working on the parade volunteers to make sure the parade works. we have all our coordinators that have to contact parade

units early on. it's almost 3/4 of a year that they're working on straight. >> and keeping everyone safe, hundreds of police officers, even they got a chance to walk in the parade. the chp says people in an suv that caused a multi-car crash on highway 101 in petaluma got out and ran off the freeway and haven't been seen since. look at some of the pictures a quick thinking witness took. this woman caught running down petaluma boulevard right after the crash about noon yesterday. she has several distinct tattoos, including two lipstick marks inc.ked -- inked on her chest. the chp says that they were in a black 1995 ford explorer. next week, apple supporters will protest in more than 30 cities across the country all because of the country's incorruption to fight with the fbi. the protests planned for tuesday are organized by the internet rights group fight for

the future. they come a week after the fbi went to court to force apple to weaken the security built into iphones. the feds say they need to get into the phone of one of the san bernardino shooters. supreme court justice antonin scalia was laid to rest today. bells tolled as pallbearers carried his flag draped casket. those his politics were divisive, people from both sides of the aisle came out to remember him today. >> and tonight, people in fiji are starting to clean up after the strongest storm ever recorded in the southern hemisphere, tropical cyclone winston slammed fiji with winds of more than 180 miles per hour told. that is the equivalent of a category 5 hurricane. the storm brought heavy flooding, flattened trees and knocked out power. at least one person was killed. there's now concern over possible high-rises.

with all those new buildings, what if there's a fire. only on 5, cate cauguiran gets the low down from the city's top fire expert. >> reporter: it looks like a movie, but it's real. dubai transforming with a towering inferno. you can't help but wonder, can it happen here. meet assistant fire chief bob postel. he's in charge of high-rise fire safety for san francisco. >> these buildings are built to protect themselves. >> reporter: any fire above 7 floors can't be reached with a ladder. that's why high-rises like this one, the iconic transamerica pyramid have put in place their own internal fire fighting technology. it's called the life safety system. every high-rise has to have one along with a team of trained professionals.

the pyramid building's chief engineer doug peterson took us to where it all starts the control room. >> life safety goes through a matrix. it will let us know where the fire is. >> reporter: a general alarm goes off and the building springs into action. >> fire doors will enact, they'll close. fire dampers will close, air systems will shut off, not to provide air to the fire. >> reporter: each floor is designed toen cotaken flames for two hours -- designed to contain flames for two hours. >> i don't want the fire to go ahead and hit what's called the core of the building. >> basically this building could put itself out if needed to. >> exactly. >> reporter: but you still need firefighters and lots of them. >> it's a huge logistical challenge. chief postel estimates 150 personnel, and 7 battalion chiefs, the biggest challenge, he says, getting water out. >> 2 minutes per floor for us to get water flowing so if you have a fire on the 15th floor,

you can assume it's going to take 30 minutes to get up there and get water flowing. >> reporter: luckily it's an unlike lie scenario aside from fire safety systems, high-rises in the u.s. also have strict building codes, unlike the towering inferno in dubai. even in the worst case scenario, only 16 people suffered minor injuries and the high-rise was smart enough to save itself. cate cauguiran kpix 5. well, kids with nerves of steal and spelling skills better than many adults, for the if i had year in a row, kpix 5 and kcb -- for the third year in a row kpix 5 is sponsoring the spelling bee. and we were there for the nail biting round. >> reporter: with kisses and best wishes, more than 200 students filed into the auditorium at lawrence hall of science. these school champions helped

to advance to about 50 spots at the cbs bay area regional spelling competition. are you nervous. >> i'm more nervous than she is. >> reporter: 9-year-old xander is a first time contestant. >> i feel amazing. i can't believe it. >> he's actually the first 3rd 3rd grader of the school to ever win the school wide spelling bee. >> everybody feeling good for this? >> reporter: for two hours, the 2nd through 8th graders listened carefully to pronouncer, jason brooks of kcbs radio. they had to write the spelling of 50 years from the dictionary. >> it was pretty hard. i'm only in 5th grade, and they gave us up to 8th grade words. >> had you heard of all of the words. >> a lot of them no, but some of them, i have. >> reporter: the youngest speller, 2nd grader, nathan twan said he did his best. >> some of them, i had to sound

them out. >> reporter: now the students must wait. they'll find out by next friday who scored well enough to advance to the regional spelling bee at our kpix studios. >> the winner goes on to the scripps national spelling bee. you know who won the medal all the time in his school was mark twain, to him it didn't mean anything. you're born either knowing how to spell or you don't. he said he won the medal but didn't really care about. mark twain had a pretty good career, didn't he. numbers are mostly in the 40s and 50s in the bay area. we look toward the bay bridge. oakland 49. san francisco 52, and santa rosa 42. we're in for a spell of warm weather this week, with temperatures out the door tomorrow morning on the chill side. by the time sunday finishes, plenty of sunshine and readings

mostly in the upper 60s all because high pressure has a grip on the west coast and it's not relenting. as a result any of the moisture that's out in the pacific is being steered to the north. we get high and dry weather all next week. monday you can see the storm track is just over the pacific northwest where they're going to get wet up in washington. a little bit of oregon but mostly the west coast of canada. we're looking for things to be high and dry. clear and chilly tonight, mainly sunny this weekend, and warming up next week with no rain in the next six days at least. maybe next saturday but in the meantime, not much. travel weather forecast heading out of the bay area, dense fog advisories are posted for fresno and south. if you're heading into the southern end of the great valley on 99 or 5, it is treacherous before 9:00 in the morning. overnight lows will see them mostly in the mid-40s. sunrise before 7:00 tomorrow. and forecast highs above average. a few degrees above average for
