the outcry greater than ever. joe vazquez at one of the encampments. what are you seeing out there now? >> that deadline has come and gone. we haven't seen any city personnel. for that matter, we've not seen a lot of homeless people. you could see some tents here. there are about a dozen here in the area of san bruno and alameda but as we pan the camera around, you see a lot of sidewalk. we're told a few days ago it was wall to wall tents all the way down to division street. the public health department ordered people to vacate the area, saying this was a public nuisance because of all the human waste and hypodermic needles. that appeared to create a sweep, and that's why some activists decided to spend the night in tents late last week including edward linda who's running for supervisor. >> the fact they may consider a threat doesn't mean it solves anything. it just means that people who were sleeping on the streets

moved. >> we checked out the other tent city in division of van ness. they had a deadline of 5:00. there are 25 tents left there, down from about 130 a week ago. the health department spokesperson tells me they do not expect any police action today, no enforcement today, but we're wondering whether that will happen tomorrow because there's still some tents out here, a lot of folks out here worry that the cops are going to sweep through. for that matter we're also wondering where did all these folks go? we're going to look around because we've been told some of them may have gone a couple blocks away. reporting live, i'm joe vazquez, kpix 5. the driver accused in a deadly hit-and-run is now behind bars, thanks to a quick thinking off duty officer. police say around midnight the driver hit a man who was checking a tire on his car on the shoulder of eastbound i-80 near pinole valley road. an off duty officer noticed the

driver swerving so he started following the car. that's when he witnessed the crash. the victim was thrown down a hillside from the impact. the driver kept going. the officer called for backup and the driver was finally stopped. 31-year-old carey cash of oakland was arrested. we've learned a san francisco man was arrested in anaheim. things turned violent when the kkk group arrived at a park and was met by a group of counterprotesters. three people were stabbed, a dozen arrested. it isn't clear which side the fran -- the san francisco man was on. a deadly wreck killed two teenagers coming home from disneyland. they hit a ups truck, that in turn slammed in to the teen's car. police caught one of the racers, the other still at large.

we learned one of the victims was the son of l.a. county sheriff. hillary clinton's campaign building serious momentum heading in to supertuesday. the wall street journal poll shows her with a 2-1 lead over bernie sanders in georgia. she has a big lead in tennessee, 26 points. it's a similar story in texas where she holds a 21-point lead. the candidates on both sides of the aisle are revving up their game for super tuesday, march 1st. anne makovec reports it could be make or break for several campaigns. >> reporter: on super tuesday, 13 states weigh in on primary season 2016. the frontrunners, hillary clinton for the democrats. >> we need to raise your voices and your votes. >> reporter: and republican donald trump. >> we're really winning with everybody and i'm really thrilled by it.

>> the states voting are in yellow, including more southern states than super tuesdays in the past. republican ted cruz, who's courting conservatives and evangelicals has called the south his fire wall. >> if you want to stop this trump train, the only way to do so is to beat him on super tuesday. >> reporter: the republicans have the chance to win about half the delegations needed. texas is the biggest prize with 155 delegates up for grabs. >> we need to remind people of what's at stake. we're about to lose the conservative movement to someone who's not a conservative. >> at this point this race is on much more of a national scale since the candidates can't be on the ground in all of those states at the same time. voters are more likely to base their opinions on what they're seeing in the headlines. >> social media is killing the political party operation. >> reporter: our kpix political insiders say that's benefiting one man. >> we're going to beat out the

establishment. the establishment is disgraceful. >> the party is based upon loyalty. the party is based upon a willingness to follow somebody's dictate who operates from the shadow. it's all out there now. >> reporter: there a 5 republicans and two democrats who say it's anybody's game. >> sometimes the media says this state had an election. we have dozens of states to go. we're feeling good about the future. after super tuesday, political observers will be keeping a close eye on the florida and ohio primaries on march 15th. marco rubio and john kasich could struggle to win their respective home state. californians vote on june 7th. 475 delegates will be up for grabs. the republicans. 172 for democrats. glitz, glamour, and controversy. the stars are out for the 88th annual academy awards. all smiles on the red carpet but hardly in the background is the

weeks-long controversy. host chris rock addressed the fact that no black actors were nominated in the major categories. he called for hollywood to give more opportunities to minorities in film. the hashtag #oscarssowhite has been floating around and many chose to boycott the awards including reverend al sharpton. >> if they want to have a whites-only awards, you don't need no black dollars in your pocket. >> sharpton is holding an oscar protest not far from the awards show. coming up, turns out the third time wasn't the charm. what's keeping the spacex rocket from getting off the ground again. and small homes, big impact. how bay area artists are providing a housing solution to those in need. that's next.

g tiny it's an interesting way to tackle the housing crunch in the bay area. >> volunteers are building tiny homes using recycled materials. kpix 5's john ramos shows us the creations that are giving the homeless a place to stay. >> reporter: greg is an urban artist who noticed one big difference between his house and the shelters so many of oakland's homeless build for

themselves. >> we have solid walls for a reason in our house because it's that protection, that shell of safety. >> reporter: he hammered together a bunch of cast off wood in to a tiny house on wheels that he ended up giving to a homeless woman he met named sheila. >> that meant the world to me. just to have a place to lay your head and be dry. >> reporter: the idea is catching on and this weekend about 100 volunteers have gathered at this industrial arts work space to complete 10 more tiny spaces for people to call home. >> you feel like you're actually doing something more active and proactive about the problem. >> reporter: it's habitat for humanity meets burning man as each team works out a different free form design with almost nothing on paper to guide them. jodie is building his shelter to look like a train caboose, because, well, just because. >> somebody is going to love sleeping in the caboose.

if i was homeless, i would want to sleep in a caboose. >> reporter: they're painted happy colors and most of the materials are things others have thrown out. like a tin roof fashioned from empty cans found in back of a restaurant. while each design is different, the feature that city officials like best are the wheels. >> the city comes in, hey, you've got to leave, you push your home to a different location. you share the burden of people in the cities not just in front of one business. >> reporter: he and the city agree. this isn't the answer to homelessness. but at least someone is doing something about a problem that most of us just choose to ignore. in oakland, john ramos, kpix 5. >> clain has built more than 40 of the tiny houses so far and he says the city doesn't seem to mind as long as it remains a grassroots effort. still ahead, tech meets fashion. how a bay area startup is turning little girls in to inventors. >> as the light drains out of the sunday night sky, the pressure is on. so is the heat for monday.

it's a no-go for the launch of spacex, just seconds before the rocket was set to take off, the mission was aborted because of rising oxygen temperatures. safety teams said it's too risky. this was spacex's third attempt to reach orbit. the crews at the cape say they're disappointed but they'll keep on trying. we hear a lot about hacking and dangers on the internet. today parents got lessons on how to let their kids explore online safely. the first ever cyber smart workshop was held in san

francisco. tech experts were there to teach moms and dads about risks to kids on the internet and what to do if something goes wrong. the workshop comes ahead of this week's rsa conference at the basconi center and that focuses on information security. people are coming up with creative ways to get girls interested in the s.t.e.m. careers of science, technology, engineering and math. sharon chin shows us a new program that literally gets their feet in to the door of technology. >> i'll show you a special trick. >> reporter: 7- to 8-year-old girls like genevieve newell are creating their own shoe accessories. >> i like designing things and it's really cool. >> reporter: the girls are learning 3d design and printing for the first time. >> i hope this is something that lights that bulb in her brain and makes her want to go in to it more. >> reporter: alexa fleischmann and laura wallace teach the class around the bay area as part of savvy society. the two friends launched the san

francisco-based startup last december to make s.t.e.m. fields fun for girls aged 6 to 12. >> at the end of the day they feel like they're being inventors and creators. >> reporter: alexa and lauren themselves studied market and finance and discovered it wasn't easy learning technology for their jobs. they didn't want girls to go through the same struggles. that inspired them to quit their jobs and form savvy society. >> there's a really unique opportunity with 3d printing because it's brand new for everyone. we have a chance to give girls a running start and prevent a gender gap before it ever forms. >> reporter: savvy society offers a two-hour class for girls complete with pink laptops. the fee is $60 to $70 per child, depending on the classroom rental cost. students learn tinker cad, a kid-friendly computer-aided program. each girl takes home a pair of shoes with a 3d accessory.

tomorrow. readings will be mostly in the mid 70s. that would take highs in to record territory for monday. we shall see record highs tomorrow as a ridge of high pressure bubbles up between two lows that are stampeding the pacific northwest. they're getting rain and showers in seattle and we're getting a few high clouds from that tonight. mostly the futurecast you can see tomorrow, tomorrow, tomorrow, later in the day, all sunshine. right through wednesday. we'll cool it down on tuesday and wednesday. then by thursday it looks like we're going to get rain in the bay area and more coming in for the weekend, especially saturday night and sunday as the storm door opens again as we approach the weekend, we're finally looking for some significant amounts. thursday is not going to amount to much. on saturday and sunday, inch, inch and a half in the lowlands. an outlook from the centers for disease control, they're getting in the business of weather
