live from the cbs bay area studios, this is kpix 5 news. good afternoon everyone. i'm frank mallicoat. >> and i'm anne makovec. police are searching for the person who fatally shot a 14- year-old boy along the richmond

greenway trail. chopper5 was over the scene as police investigated the area. witnesses saw a male suspect running from the area. it happened near the bart tracks and service was slow for a time. we'll bring you updates. and also in richmond, a scary crash on busy interstate 80. the chp said the crash involved 10 cars and a bus. this is year the albany off ramp. several people were hurt in the crash and they are all expected to survive. traffic is down to one lane at the crash scene. so it's slow going in that area. a court hearing for three santa clara county jail guards accused in the beating death of a mentally ill inmate. the charges could put them behind bars for life. kiet do reports on the hearing. >> reporter: showed up wearing a dark suit with a lawyer on

one side and a loved one on the other. rodriguez and the -- are charged for beating to death michael tyrie. at today's preliminary hearing. a prosecutor will try and convince the judge there's enough of a case to hold a trial. his likely strategies show how the three deputies were the only ones who had success to him when he died. and how close another inmate was when he heard cries for help. >> information has trickled out in tips and court documents. and now we're expecting to see the floodgates open up. as for possible defenses, the guards could say they acted in self-defense or try to pin the homicide on another inmate. >> i want to express my

profound sorrow. lori smith has convened a wide panel of experts to do a top to bottom assessment of the main jail. the hearing is set for the at least three days. and all three guards are pleaded not guilty to murder and assault in the inmate's death in august. an elementary school is closed in los gatos after an emergency standoff. a man crashed his car around 7:00 this morning. and he told deputies to shoot him but the negotiating team talked him down. this all happened by lakeside elementary. and administrators had to close down for the day as a precaution. san jose police trying to find the driver behind this wild crash. the man crashed the suv into the home and then ran off.

the crash damaged a gas matter but no one was hurt. the fbi wiretaps are linked to the raymond shrimp boy chow case. instructors began voting on whether or not to authorize a strike after year of salary negotiations. union workers have been working without a contract since last july. but administrators say the negotiations are still in the mediation stage. tomorrow is considered the biggest day in the 2016 presidential campaign. it's super tuesday and a dozen states will vote with hundreds of votes up for grabs. craig boswell has details from the white house.

donald trump finds himself at the center of controversy after david duke stated his support for the businessman. trump didn't immediately condemn the white supremacist. >> i know nothing about david duke or white supremacists. >> i don't disavowing anybody. and i dis-vowed him at a major news conference. >> it makes him unelectable. how can we grow our party with a nominee that refuses to condemn the ku klux klan. >> that should be common ground among everyone, bigotry, racism, anti-semitism has no role in politics. >> america's first black president cannot be succeeded by a hate monger that refuses

to condemn the kkk. >> thank you so much, south carolina. >> clinton had a resounding victory in south carolina. >> tomorrow this campaign goes national. >> democrats vote in 11 states on super tuesday. and clinton has huge leads in the three with the largest number of delegates up for grabs. >> the battleground tracker poll shows donald trump leading in georgia and virginia but senator ted cruz leading in his home state of texas. violence broke out in anaheim park on saturday after 6 kkk members showed up to protest illegal immigration. 30 counter-protesters started beating them. and 12 people were arrested.

five of them were released saying they were acting in search defense. two dozen big name tech companies are backing apple as it takes on the fbi. companies are supporting apple. the company is refusing to unlock the san bernardino shooter's iphone. and law enforcement groups are filing briefs supporting the government. a navy seal received the nation's highest award for his heroism in afghanistan. in 2012 he was in a mission to rescue an american hostage when he leapt across the room to shield the hostage from gunfire. and he pinned a taliban guard to the wall with his bare hands. president obama injected a little bit of service. >> we welcome ed's mom peggy who had one question when ed

her first day on the job .. being held without bail. ronald hamilton requested a court-appointed an army staff sergeant accused of killing a police officer on her first day on the job is being held without bail. police say hamilton shot and killed his wife after she called 911 during an argument. and after that he is accused of shooting and killing the police officer and injuring two others. a top adviser to pope francis said the catholic church made enormous mistakes in covering up the abuse of children. a cardinal told commissioners it's a scandal that the church allowed.

quite a bit thicker. >> reporter: the fog was a welcome sight for some people. commuters said it gives the bay area a picturesque look that they've been missing during the abnormal window. >> i think today's commute was better than in the last two weeks. >> i was in the passenger seat and was just relaxing and took a picture or two. >> delays affected short and medium haul flights. some arrivals were delayed by 45 minutes. flights to the east coast and abroad were not impacted. >> because these aircraft fly so many legs in any given day, you could see residual delay activity. >> as it covered the bridges and decreased visibility, bay area commuters took it all in stride. >> i haven't been this foggy

juniper count it's medium to high. and looking out to the bay wears from the transamerica building to just nothing but wall to wall sunshine and the coast is clear. 50 in oakland. and 67 in san jose and 66 in livermore. mild and above average temperatures by a good 15 degrees in some locations. and we'll have light rain. in and out of the rain for the next couple of weeks. leading edge of the area of low pressure pushing in to the pacific northwest. could be in the northwestern section of the state of california. it's got to bust through the dry air mass and moisten up the area. it allows a weak disturbance to bring rain on thursday and a bigger storm for the weekend. this is our future cast and right there light rain by tuesday, early, early morning, and the far north bay.

and by the evening commute, it falls apart. and then there's the wednesday with sunshine by wednesday night. that's the second disturbance that will roll through for the morning commute leaving us with sunshine for friday and another storm for the weekend. 52 in tahoe. and you'll get dumped on with snow in the high sierra. sunset 6:03 and by tomorrow, these are the numbers. 77 in san jose. 78degrees in mountain view. and 79 in gilroy. very light rain well north. and saturday afternoon, if everything paps out. we'll have rain and wind all the way through sunday. 3inches of rain in the wettest spots, coastal areas, and northern mountains. >> el niño is coming back. >> i haven't seen roberta's
