washout. your realtime captioner is linda marie macdonald. now at noon, a rainy friday in the bay area and much of the weekend may be a washout. let's get to roberta gonzales who is tracking the rain. roberta. >> reporter: we do have now at this particular time some heavy

rain that's moved into the bay area off the coast. we are watching it carefully. according to our live hi-def doppler radar, the precipitation is moving from the west across the peninsula lifting up north. i'm going to zoom in on some of the hard hit areas. we are going towards 580/680 corridor in the dublin- pleasanton area. that's always a mess when it rains. but look at the yellow on the tv screen. that's pretty moderate rainfall from mill valley through tiburon into muir beach and berkeley, as well. peninsula getting sparked around the bay u district into sfo into san francisco. heavy rain in the mission. folsom street also has some heavy rain and chinatown and the richmond district moderate rain, as well. this is the prefront associated with a bigger storm that's lurking offshore. that particular storm will cause some urban and small stream flooding around the bay

area here. the evening commute is sure to be a mess tonight. we are going to talk about all the rain all the gusty winds, the watches and the advisories, and even the snowfall in tahoe, got to get down to some business later on in this newscast. thank you. developing news now in southern california. another twist in the o.j. simpson case 20 years after the murders of his wife and ron goldman. teri okita says lapd says a knife reportedly found on property he once owned is undergoing forensic tests. >> reporter: los angeles police announced friday that investigators are now testing a knife that a construction worker allegedly found on the property formerly owned by o.j. simpson. >> within the last month, lapd became aware of an item that was allegedly recovered by a citizen at the rockingham property possibly during the demolition of the site. >> reporter: a worker who helped level the home in 1998 says he turned the knife over

to an off-duty lapd officer years ago. the lapd said when detectives discovered the now retired officer had the knife, they launched an investigation. they said the former officer believed the case was closed and kept it. he is an lapd officer. he didn't know to turn it in? >> i don't know what his statement is. >> reporter: the lapd is testing the knife for hair, fingerprints and dna. in 1995, simpson was acquitted of the murders of his ex-wife, nicole brown, and her friend ron goldman. the case continues to fascinate the public. more than 20 years later a new tv miniseries debuted with strong ratings. the lapd says the knife story could be, quote, bogus. but since there's been no conviction, the case is open. teri okita, cbs news, los angeles. a bay area babysitter accused of nearly suffocating an infant made her first court appearance today.

kpix 5 reporter anne makovec was in the courtroom when she entered her plea. >> reporter: 20-year-old nanny moriah gonzales walked into court with her lawyer by her side and pleaded not guilty to felony child abuse. >> she was just taking care of the child and putting him down. >> reporter: it was february 18th that court records say gonzeles was captured on a nanny cam at a home in livermore trying to calm a 13- month-old boy referred to as john doe. moriah was holding him with her hands nearing his face. moriah then placed her hands closer to doe's face and the sound went from clear and audible to a muffled cry. doe began to squirm and kick. he then the went limp. but gonzeles' lawyer says -- >> there's no evidence in this case whatsoever of any injury to this child. >> reporter: gonzeles had advertised her services on the website care.com which said, we are deeply troubled by this incident and our thoughts are with the family. we have proactively contacted law enforcement to provide

whatever assistance we can." for now, gonzeles is out on a $100,000 bond. >> she is demolished by this. it ruined her life. >> she is ordered to stay away from anyone under age 18, the lawyer is trying to get that changed to 14 as he maintains her innocence. >> the child was not mishandled or mistreated. >> how did things turn so ugly? >> i think that story will be one of the real sub stories of this case. there's a bond between the parents and the livermore police department. >> reporter: he didn't say exactly what that might be. he has the dvds involved in this investigation. in pleasanton, anne makovec, kpix 5. a massive tree came crashing down over cars and a bus in san francisco. but the wet weather may not be to blame. the tree fell near the intersection of and the tree

toppled over. the front of the car was covered by branches so she had to crawl out a back door. >> i think all the sewer work they are doing compromises the roots because these guys were just working on the fire hydrant and they were jackhammering there but not touching the tree. but the tree react. >> no injuries. a man was killed in san jose today when his pickup truck smashed into an suv at an intersection. nine hours later the driver of the suv is still missing. kiet do reports from the scene. >> reporter: the debris field helps tell the story. shattered glass, plastic, metal, clothes and paper strewn about an area the size of two tennis courts. it happened just before 3 a.m. at the corner of camden and lee avenues in san jose's cambrian park neighborhood. a nissan frontier pickup truck was going eastbound on can dem when it. it boned a dodge going southbound on leigh avenue. it's not clear who had the green light.

to give you a sense of the speed, they crashed right in the middle of the intersection. and the force of the impact spun the pickup truck around where it ended up 40 yards away up on the sidewalk of this chase bank. the driver was ejected, his body thrown another 30 yards away, where he died in the street. the durango ended up farther away on a grassy knoll into a tree. >> they were going fast considering where they ended up. >> reporter: the driver of the durango took off but another man was found wandering around the suv. it is unclear how he is connected to the crash whether as a passenger or just a passerby. this is san jose's 11th traffic fatality of the year. kiet do, kpix 5. first it was the mayor now santa clara's city manager is calling it quits. julio fuentes will resign in may. it comes after the city launched an investigation to

look into claims that he faced racial discrimination while on the job. insiders say he wasn't cooperating so he plans to go back to southern california. a problem in the transbay tube is knocking cars on the line. 80 cars have been damaged. the damage occurs eastbound through the tube. it's possible a power surge is happening as they pass a substation. whatever the cause, the effect is that riders must jam into shorter trains. >> coming in there's a lot more pushing and shoving particularly when they are trying to be the last person to get in to squeeze into the train and tempers get hot. >> a lot of people aren't able to get on the trains. they are more crowded. you hear a lot of -- you know, there's another train coming. we have to close the doors. >> reporter: bart is urgently trying to find the problem in the tube that started last month. people in the north bay can get their first look at the

smart train this afternoon. two cars from the sonoma-marin area rail transit are now on display. the public can board them and look inside at a platform on 3rd street in downtown san rafael. passenger trains will soon be running in the area for the first time in more than 50 years. service on the 43-mile stretch will again by the end of the year. federal relief may be coming to bay area crab fishermen. jackie speier has introduced a bill called the crab emergency disaster act. it would provide $138 million in aid to the crab industry. it's struggled since november, when crab started testing positive for a toxin caused by algae blooms. >> we're hoping to find way to both have the secretary declare this as a federal disaster and to also provide this resource to the men and women who have been fishing for dungeness crab

and who have lost really a whole season. >> state officials say the impact of this year's crab disaster resulted in $48 million in losses to the industry as of last mon. campaign 2016 now. the race for the republican nomination turned nasty during last night's debate. the attacks got personal among the three leading candidates. and craig boswell shows us they haven't stopped since. >> reporter: donald trump picked up where he left on on friday morning. >> little marco, little marco. employers added 242-thousand jobs. that's 50- thou the u.s. is seeing robust job growth.

labor department says last month employers added 242,000 jobs. that's 50,000 more than a lot of economists expected. at the same time, the unemployment rate held steady at 4.9%. the man in charge of linkedin is putting his bonus $14 million into a pool for workers. it could help make up for last month's steep plunge in the company's stock value. employees who joined linkedin in 2015 have seen stock options fall and some might want to leave. it's the latest feature in on demand healthcare. a new app that's helping patients find cosmetic surgeons with just a few swipes on their phone or tablet. chris martinez shows us how it works. >> any problems, dryness? >> no. >> reporter: so far, so good is how victor describes his recovery after undergoing a

for doctors in the future. chris martinez, cbs news, pasadena, california. we are in for a wet weekend. and roberta is here with our forecast. >> and it already has begun. we have the prefrontal moisture all already moving into the bay area. this is the perfect time to take a look at some of my weather watchers reports temperatures 50s through 70s. here in novato, dana says she picked up a tenth inch of rain in a half-hour. this is vital information as i can get a handle on how hard it's raining around the bay area. the live hi-def doppler radar, we have shades of green, that's the light rain. the more moderate rain is in the yellow. and then heavy rainfall in the orange. as i zoom in it's pouring in berkeley right now. pretty moderate rain around orinda and emeryville and west

oakland. also towards castro valley and hayward. we started to see the rain bands move onshore just after about 9:45 in the morning. for the evening commute some scattered showers, certainly notable. we have the rain at the golden gate bridge at this hour. very slippery when wet. temperatures very mild. it feels so subtropical outside. the winds increasing out of the south a 15, going up to 20 miles per hour. on the weekend we have a wind advisory that goes into effect with wind gusts up to 50 miles per hour. now a flash flood watch in effect for it the "valley fire" zone. now that burned-out area in middleton. we'll see some flooding in that particular area and the possibility of mud slides. this is the core of the center of the area of low pressure. this is the frontal boundary area and it's tapping into that atmospheric river that zooms all the way back towards the hawaiian islands. futurecast. this is high noon saturday, scattered showers around the bay area. you start to see, what's going on? here's your lunchtime.

the showers begin to really gather in earnest. the frontal boundary causes heavy downpours. the threat of a thunderstorm, as well. a little bit of lull in the evening hours, more rain showers heavy on sunday afternoon. a bit of a break by monday. rainfall totals will stack up to easily 3" in many areas, 4" in the highest elevations. 6" at the coast. so we have wind and rain over the weekend. as far as the temperatures, everybody is going to be pretty much in the 60s to 70 degrees today. the wind will be a problem for all areas including the napa valley marathon. you will have some downed trees and power lines. and you'll have ponding on the roadways. so make it a good afternoon indoors tomorrow. >> just watch movies. >> all right. >> channel 5. >> yeah. >> and channel 5. well, with more coyote sightings, dog owners are nervous about the danger. coming up, our pet expert dr. jill chase joins us to talk about protecting your animals. ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

here to talk about ways dog owners can you know, recent -- can you hear that? [ noise ] >> recent coyote sightings have prompted renewed concern over pet attacks. dr. jill chase is here to tell us about how dog owners can protect their pets from coyotes. what are some tips? >> i think it's a great

question. we do live in an environment where coyotes are part of that and so if you're going to be traveling or taking your pet into the presidio, stern grove, or golden gate park, make sure they are on a leash. you don't want that situation where they see the coyote and then think they may want to encounter it which is not going to be good. so -- keep them on a leash. somebody had a great idea about carrying an umbrella and opening up it. and -- getting feedback. scare it away. flash flights. anything to make yourself be big enough that the coyote doesn't want to tangle with you. >> are there bad times to go on a walk at night, daytime, either one? >> well, so it's true that they don't really come out during the day although there have been coyotes sightings during the day. they are more of a dusk, evening type of predator. so that's probably the time you should be hyperalert but i think at this point we need to be alert all the time.

>> it's raining now. and is it okay to take a dog out in the rain. of course!
