look ..at the bay bridge to plaza. the bigges now at 6:30. a saturday soaker around the bay area, here's a live look at the bay bridge toll plaza. the biggest storm we have seen in weeks is bringing heavy rain rain and wind tonight. the rain making a mess of the roads slick conditions on the

bay area freeways now and windshield wipers going fast and strong wind toppling trees and bringing down power lines. good evening, i'm juliette goodrich. >> i'm brian hackney. flood watches, wind advisories, posted through midnight in the bay area. right here, we have debris flows, fast runoff, flooded roads, traveling with care a necessity tonight. out in the mountains, winter storm warnings are posted as a powerful storm sets its sights on the bay area. the kpix 5 hi-def doppler shows heavy cells pounding the north and central bay. more coming in off the san mateo county coastline. and look at the heavy rain on 17 over the santa cruz mountains. so far more than 2 inches of rain have fallen on mount tam. oakland .86." concord .64." the same in san jose. and there is more on the way tomorrow night. >> kpix 5's maria medina joins us live now from a soggy campbell. maria. >> reporter: it's heavy rain for the last several hours. you can see the roads are

slick. the ground is soaking wet. you hear this all the time when it rains: take is it slow out there. in fact, we are going to take a look at some video shot by my photographer rachel mosley on her way here to the south bay. this is on 280. a couple of spinouts that she recorded on her cell phone, one car looking the other way in fact. the rain not the only big story here but the wind. my photographer had to go from 65 to 40 miles an hour. back here live, the good news, no major accidents or flooding to report. but as you know we are only halfway into this storm. back to you guys. >> all right. thank you. a man's body was found today in the heavy surf off a beach in marin county. the bolinas fire department responded at 2:30 this afternoon to the beach off brighton avenue. investigators are looking for a cause of death. the wet weather may to be blame for a deadly crash in the

east bay. witnesses say the silver car was speeding on bollinger canyon road in san ramon this afternoon. the driver lost control and the car went off the road hitting trees. the driver died at the scene. in lafayette, crews were called out to clear a large tree that fell across moraga road. the road was closed for two hours while it was cleared. in orinda power lines have come down, forcing the closure of several roads in the area. >> and in novato, heavy rain sent a large tree falling on a mail truck. the driver was inside but was not hurt. new temporary barriers are popping up around a trouble spot known to flood in san francisco. the puc set up flood barriers on 17th and folsom streets. all part of a new pilot program

to protect flood-prone areas. the city hoped shelters to help the homeless. there are two shelters. the one in golden gate park doesn't allow pets. at sfo, the bad weather is causing a nightmare for travelers. the average delay time for flights is almost 2 hours, which is a fairly low nightmare threshold. 15 nights have already been canceled and more cancellations are expected as the night wears on. dozens of firearms are in the wrong hands today after a brazen burglary. it happened in petaluma this morning at the independence armory on lakeville street. kpix 5 reporter emily turner is live outside the store and says the entire thing was caught on camera. >> reporter: the story behind me is boarded up and attempting to be secured tonight. take a look at the security cameras. it happened around 7:30 this

morning in broad daylight. the men backed an older model honda accord into the storefront. as soon as the burglar bars were broken they went into the store. they made quick work of the whole job disappearing out of sight for a few moments way from the security cameras. they had no bags with them so it looks like whatever they took with them, they had to carry out in their arms. right now, they scrounged around the front of the building also and then took off jumping into the car that they used to break into the window. police aren't saying exactly how many guns these crooks got, these four men. but they also are not talking on camera at all. we are going to try to get some more information here in the next couple of hours and bring that to you live. reporting live in petaluma, emily turner, kpix 5. >> it's obviously wet and rainy. there's another report tonight of a sexual assault near the cal campus. police say the latest incident happened this morning. a cal student says she was

attacked on aetna street near dwight way in berkeley. the woman says a man came up from behind, grabbed her and dragged her off the sidewalk. police say this latest attack might be connected to other assaults in berkeley over the past several weeks. police are looking for this man, caught on surveillance video. san jose police have arrested a 21-year-old man in a deadly hit-and-run. this was aftermath early yesterday morning at camden and leigh avenue. police found a huge debris field and two smashed up cars. the driver of the truck was killed. the suv driver was eventually traced back to his home. 21-year-old xavier villareal was arrested and charged with felony dui. still ahead, the presidential candidates battling it out on this super saturday and some surprising results. the race for delegates and what could be a big shift for the republicans. >> plus o.j. simpson back in the spotlight a knife found on his former property. why the person who discovered

side. he made it clear he is here to shake things up. >> and the scream you hear the howl that comes from washington, dc is utter terror at what we, the people, are doing together. >> now, super saturday is giving republicans a chance to gain on front-runner donald trump. for the democrats, hillary clinton is looking to build on her momentum from super tuesday and craig boswell reports everybody is looking ahead to a key contest in florida. >> reporter: ted cruz kicked off super saturday with a big win in kansas. he also picked up a win in maine. >> what we're seeing is republicans coalescing around our campaign. we saw that in super tuesday. >> reporter: but into it is expected to go better for donald trump in kentucky, where there's a large turnout at caucuses there. and in louisiana, which is holding a primary. those two states both have 46 delegates at stake, the most up

for grabs today for the republican candidates. cruz and trump are well ahead in the delegate race. senator marco rubio is looking ahead to march 15th when his home state of florida votes. >> we're going to win florida and you'll find out on march 15 how confident we are. >> reporter: democrats are voting in three states, louisiana, kansas and nebraska. but bernie sanders and hillary clinton are both focused on michigan which holds its primary on tuesday. >> this is a brilliant audience, we are going to win here in michigan with it. >> reporter: sanders will have to wait on michigan but his message did resonate in kansas, where he won the caucuses there saturday. craig boswell, cbs news, washington. >> and louisiana's just announced its primary winners. hillary clinton easily won on the democratic side and donald trump is the republican winner. we have an update too on results from nebraska. bernie sanders has just been declared the winner of the democratic caucuses there in nebraska. the democrats will caucus in maine tomorrow.

the trial of the century, but potential new evidence put the o.j. simpson case back in the spotlight. reporter greg mills has reaction from former simpson houseguest cato kalin. >> reporter: in 2003, 13 years ago, the lapd officer who had the knife found here during the demolition of o.j. simpson's former house tried to give that knife to lapd. that's what his attorney trent copeland told us today. he said lapd had no interest in it. no interest in a knife we still haven't seen but has certainly revived interest in the obligations murder case. cato tail lynn was living kalin was living there at the time of the murder. >> when i heard the knife is located, i'm thinking, is this going to be the knife? is this the smoking gun to the entire saga of the o.j. simpson case? >> reporter: lapd is analyzing the knife for any clues but cbs sources say the knife is a buck

knife and too small to be the murder weapon. they say the knife was found here on the rockingham drive property when the house was being demolished. lapd says the construction worker gave the knife to an lapd officer who was working on a movie set in the neighborhood. >> we all want to talk to that retired lapd officer about the story about the knife but his attorney said, not going to happen. he said, quote, he is not that time of guy. >> reporter: the attorney told us he was meeting with the retired officer today to discuss where they go from here. >> that was greg mills reporting. firefighters in fresno pulled off an unusual rescue this week. a woman discovered some dogs trapped at the bottom of an air- conditioner shaft eight feet down. she called firefighters, who lowered a contraption with cat food and a slab of ribs on it to coax the dogs. they eventually pulled up a mother and her three puppies. >> very happy and i'm grad that we found them on time. the mom seems like she has been there a long time.

>> the pregnant dog fell down the shaft and gave birth while trapped. the rescuer says she plans on fostering the three pups and their mother. and in minnesota, a dog learned a new trick, how to drive! but not very well. witnesses say a yellow lab drove this semi truck into a tree outside a minnesota gas station. the driver went inside and the dog took the wheel, sort of. police say he managed to knock the idling truck into gear and no one was hurt. >> wow. and back to our top story tonight. the storm and we'll give with a time lapse view from the richmond/san rafael traffic camera truth raindrops. you can see the slick approach to the toll plaza there. drivers are advised to slow down true the weekend. visibility is very low tonight. if you live in san francisco, you can prepare for the possible flooding. today the city was giving away 10 free sandbags to each resident. you can get them at marin and kansas streets. the sandbags lots are open every day except on the day when it's going to be raining

tomorrow. hours from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. so you've missed it. in terms of our weather, we have heavy rain on the way for the bay area for the next couple of hours tonight. then we have more on the way tomorrow night. so to sum it up, flood watches posted throughout the bay area tonight but it will be easing up toward midnight. finally the storm door belted open by low pressure off the pacific northwest. and that means a stream of moisture coming foot bay area as you can see on the hi-def doppler. we have some heavy cells just off point reyes poised to move into the bay area in the next few hours and then widely scattered showers some coming down pretty good in the south bay. it unwinds over skyline and 280 about to get pummeled. as you head over 9 toward ben lomond, there's heavy rain in the santa cruz mountains. out in the east bay, it's all out there moving toward livermore. flash flood watches no surprise through tonight. fast runoff, debris flows, flooded roads. so be careful. wind advisories in the prayer right now at 6:00, 35-mile-an-

hour wind gusts at concord, 33- mile-an-hour gusts at oakland, the same for san francisco airport. and gusts up to 30 miles an hour in redwood city, as well. wind advisories will be posted through midnight. winter storm warnings with all the rain resulting in 2 feet of snow above 7,000 feet. windy in the passes in excess of 100 miles an hour in spots so be careful in the mountains. looking live to the extent we can see it over the embarcadero right now the numbers are all in the upper 50s and low 60s. high surf advisory on the tail of this system. all coastal locations, very strong westerly swell will build to 20 feet tomorrow with sneaker waves a possibility. and strong rip currents, too. a slick golden gate bridge and rainfall totals 2.2" at mount tam. oakland right now .86", concord about .66. san francisco .75." san jose .6" as 25 minutes ago. here's what's happening. this cold front will now move south and east of the bay area and behind it a lot of showers. some them dumping pretty good at times through tomorrow

morning, but will ease it up tomorrow. there will be time to take the dog to the dog park. there will be time to um, you know, head out and see what damage was done overnight. before this the next system comes through sunday evening right around news time and through 9:00 tomorrow night we have one little last blast from this low pressure before it clears out so late monday night we have scattered showers and clearing and we head to tuesday. futurecast shows a good deal of rain from this first blast. we get almost 2 inches of rain in parts of the bay area but that's blast number one. watch what happens now. you really see it colored up after that next system on sunday. this is really more than we think we're going to get. this just gives you an idea we're going to get a good deal of rain. gusty winds through sunrise and rain. more rain tomorrow night. in the extend stepped wet again as i say tomorrow night, a little break midweek, and then thursday and friday we have more rain coming into the bay area. so stay tuned. there's a lot happening this week and tonight and tomorrow
