live from the cbs bay area studios, this is kpix5 news. trees and power lines down, heavy rain, wind and flooding, it's the first major storm in weeks and far from over. >> when it rained it poured and rises on the napa river system means flood warning are in affect and they could have flooding tonight but a ray of hope from the doppler, the rains moving south and east out of the the bay area specifically. it is showing light rain in the vicinity of redwood creek.

the storm dumped 3-inches of rain and more than a inch in the city but 4 inches in to the badly burned areas of lake county around middletown and they could have had problems with debris, there's more on the way for tomorrow and details in a few minutes. plenty of damage from the storm, and emily turner is in san francisco. >>reporter: it's been a major mess, and we've been in several different places. that tree behind me just snapped off at the bottom and the root didn't pop up but it is crushing several trees. you can get a better look at this, the angles from this one tree, there are at least four cars underneath there, and one truck and some poor soul owns a bmw under that tree and it's blocking the street at henry and completely blocked off so that nobody can drive through, and even if it wasn't blocked

off you wouldn't be able to get through because that tree is standing there and now lying down in the street, and then meanwhile over the in richmond district, i counted five different trees down on that street. one of them crashed over and took out a light pole. another one, on a car earlier, closer down the street, one had gotten in the intersection and someone dragged it out and it fell from the root ball, pulling the tree up with it and some cars not doing well there. meanwhile, over here, on noe st. for the folks who live here, who might need their cars out, it doesn't look like anything is being done. nobody is here trying to fix it, so we're looking into that, live in san francisco, emily

turner, kpix5. and other trouble spots. great highway is closed and not sure when it will re-open. >> and a car flipped over in the east bay, and that's in san ramon. you can see the rain was coming down and take a look at the san ramon police station, a tree came down in front of the front door and crews are moving it. >> tree came crashing down on alamo off danville blvd., and it took down power lines, and it's a wet mess in the north bay, steady rain and puddles for those outside, it's not pleasant but people are making the most of it. >> we're reporting from a soggy san jose.

>> it's been raining since we started our shift hours ago but this is lighter now, the wind has died down a bit but we're only halfway into the storm. >> the storm hit the south bay with hours of nonstop rain, the super soaker is an obstacle for anyone who left their home. it brought rain and the wind as well. rachel captured this on her cell phone. strong gusts swayed her truck back and forth. one car facing the other way. the winter weather continued to batter the south bay into the night as we head today 3 of the storm. we need the rain. >> that's what we need, more rain, so no complaining.

>> the good news, no major accidents and no significant delays at the airport. >> the same time, we got off the phone about power outages, 16,000 without power and most of those are on the peninsula. >> a man's body was found in the heavy surf off a beach in marin county. it was off brighton avenue and they're look for a cause of death. a deadly crash in the east bay, this car was speeding in san ramon and the car veered off the road and hit several trees and left behind a mangled mess, the driver died at the scene and no one else was hurt. crews called to clear a large tree, the road was closed for two hours, and the mess was

cleared and did these new temporary barriers help flooding, it's part of a new program, we'll find out tomorrow. >> four suspects are armed at large. surveillance caught the whole thing. they backed their car into metal gates and the bandits rushed the store and loaded up, the investigators were parked outside after the break in, and this is what it looked like. police across the country say there's been an uptick in these crimes. a group of burglars pulled the gates off a gun store and they managed to steal 5 weapons. three arrested have been made and it's a matter of time before they find the others.

>> a homicide is being investigated, just before 7:00 p.m., harbor rd. in the hunter's point neighborhood. no information has been released. a blue ribbon commission may not get to investigate a huge fight at the jail. the panel suggested the sheriff could keep them from looking into the incident. mercury news said it has to do with a dispute between the auditor and sheriff. it may have been an intentional fight to they could buy new cameras for the jail. >> the latest incident happened in the berkeley campus. a cal student said she was grabbed from behind and thrown to the ground and assaulted. police say based on the suspect description, it may be connect today other attacks over the past several weeks.

they're looking for this man running away. 21-year-old man is under arrest after a deadly hit and run. this is what it looked like, they found debris scattered over the street and two smashed vehicles, one of the vehicles ran a red light, and the driver of the truck was killed and a 21-year-old was arrested. >> voters in 5 states went to the polls and donald trump and ted cruz split it and bernie sanders took two and hillary clinton grabbed one. now the candidates are looking down the road at some pivotal contests. >> ted cruz had a big win

uyen spoke to his authorities say an egyptian flight student has to leave the country because of a comment about donald trump. >> orange county jail is where 23-year-old is being held after agreeing to leave the united states. immigration attorney said his client no longer wants to seek a bond hearing. >> he wants to leave as soon as he can. >> after the owner of a flight school reported him last month for a facebook post where he said he wouldn't mind serving a life sentence for killing donald trump and the whole world would thank him for it. >> genuine threats can be punished. >> no criminal charges were filed but he was expelled from the flight school where he was

given a knife buried on the simpson property and now it's being tested for dna, he tried to turn it in before, but he was told not to, but it could be bogus. >> three inmates pulled off a daring escape and they've been charged with kidnapping. the men stole a van and took a taxi driver hostage. the three were awaiting trial for murder when they made a run for it, one man turned himself in and the other two were captured in san francisco after a massive manhunt and were found in the parking lot of whole foods. the man spotted the van andly earthed and alerted the police. el niño weather has caused nightmares, but in the desert

it's a dream come through, the floor of the death valley is blanketed with a super bloom. they usually get less than 2 inches of rainfall a year but 3 1/2 inches fell in hours and to the surprise of rangers, flowers started springing up in january. >> amazing that anything lives here and then to have this display, it's a pleasure to experience. >> the flowers are going to be in bloom for another couple of weeks until the brutal heat returns. >> they're going to get rain from the same system that moved through here, and it's going to help with that bloom, it's not like a once in a lifetime thing, but it's a pretty sight when it happens. get down do death valley and have a look for yourself. it's an adventure getting down there. >> and now the weather is moving out and the doppler said the main brunt is heading over

santa barbara and for us, we'll just be in the widely scattered shower regime. south bay shows it over the hamilton range and widely scattered showers now and a few light showers down in the south bay. we'll get a few overnight but in the meantime a flash flood watch tonight but it takes a while for the rains to work their way down to the river, it rises on the river and it's well time delayed, so there could be flooding in napa and at the northern end of the city. and flooded roadways are a certainty so be careful. the rainfall totals show almost 3 inches atop marin county and in the city, more than an inch

and wind gusts were strong. and sfo had 40 miles per hour and coming through the golden gate 56 miles per hour and up in the mountains, whiteout conditions with heavy snow and strong winds and above 7,000 feet, four feet of snow, right now back in the bay area, numbers are in the 50s and now we're easing up to light rain and rain eases up and the surf comes up and the high surf is tonight and through tuesday. strong westerly swell and the build is to 20 feet. and rip currents a possibility. wind advisories posted with gusts possible up to 40 miles per hour but the front whether ease up towards sunrise. you can see that in the futurecast and colors ease up and so by 10:00 we're back to par for the course. watch this, everything brightens and we'll have a

gusty event tomorrow. futurecast bares that out from now to tomorrow night and it will really beginning to pour down into south bay tomorrow night and the rainfall totals over the two days are good. heavy rain for the next few hours and gusty winds through sunrise and more rain tomorrow night and travel weather, snow in the mountains and rain for northern california and temperatures will be in the 60s and after we get this rain, we'll have a few lingering showers on monday and a break on tuesday and clouds lead to another system on thursday. thursday is wet and so does friday before we clear it up for the weekend. scattered showers tonight and another system is tomorrow night. thank you, straight ahead, march and you know what that means? march madness is coming and dropping in soon, who are the
