mendocino now over marin and napa valley. the rain is pushing to the san mateo coastline. not much in the east and south bay. this is on top of more than 6 inches of rain that has fallen, 2 inches in santa rosa. flash flood watches are in effect with sharp spikes in the creek and bay area rivers. there is a real potential for strong winds and widespread power outages. >> highway 121 west of petaluma and valley ford drivers were still drying to go through a flood. in sonoma the roots have

left a huge hole in the street. it is not going to be an easy fix. >> a tree took power lines with it. this was repeated through the bay area with thousands without electricity. >> there is a crumbling hill side putting people in danger. >> maria. >> reporter: this storm wasn't supposed to arrive until later but it has been raining for the last couple hours. city crews are watching this building behind me. one bad storm and it could literally crumble. we have video shot earlier. this building was red tagged. a storm took out the bluff it

passed down the street. the block at folsom is notorious for flooding. it is showing promise. >> i think it is worth a shot, the simplest solution are the best ones. >> reporter: downed power lines left 16,000 bay area customers in the dark. by this afternoon that number was down to 3300. utilities say they saw the high winds coming and spend 3 to 4 days making plans to handle the damage. >> that was a big singular event. next weekend or thursday, friday, saturday doesn't look as big and doesn't take as much lead time to prepare. >> reporter: they ask residents to prepare with flashlights and stay away from power lines.

they got stuck on the ice tg to cross the bering strait. and started drifting toward ocean. a u-s coast guard helicopter came in dramatic video of two stuck in the ice across the berring strait. they are doing all right. they are planning a full crossing of the strait next year. weeks away from the first flight, the air lander 10 can carry 10 tons, transport 50 passengers and fly 5 days at 50 miles per hour. it was originally developed for
