,,,, commuter train derails. good afternoon, a frightening scene near fremont. nine people are recovering from injuries after a commuter train derailed. good afternoon, everyone. i'm michelle griego. >> hi, everyone. i'm frank mallicoat. it happened around 7:30 last night. ace train 10 was headed from

san jose to stockton when it derailed about a mile west of sunol in alameda county. we begin our team coverage with reporter kiet do at the crash scene. kiet, there's some commotion going on right now. fill us in. >> reporter: talk about a feat of modern engineering. union pacific has lifted one of the derailed cars and placed it back on the tracks. take a look at the video we shot about 10 minutes ago. the crane approached from the west and hooked that up railcar which weighs about 50 tons, swung it over and lowered it right back on the tracks. the one in the water should be lifted out a short time after that barring any major complications this scene is set to be clear by 4 p.m. the view from chopper 5 shows the scale of the disaster earth gave way after a weekend of rain. the passenger train going about 30 miles an hour weighing 250 tons was no match. to give you sense of the force of the impact, you see that barren patch of dirt up there?

that is where the earth gave way and the mud slide covered the tracks. the train smashed through that pile of dirt, plowed through and kept on going for another 100 yards, before the front railcar toppled into the creek. >> it's going to what it did. it's going to bulldoze into the mud as far as it can. but as it plows into the mud, it's also going to get raised up as the mud goes underneath. once it's off the rails, then it's, you know, gravity take over. >> reporter: ace train 10 going from san jose to stockton with 214 passengers slammed into the mud slide at 7:30 p.m. bodies, broken glass and luggage went flying. some victims were wet from the frigid waters of alameda creek waiting for rescue. first responders said it looked like a hollywood movie scene. >> that's the feel it had where you're just in the wilderness and you don't know what's going on. it looked like from the movie "fugitive."

>> reporter: sergeant nelson is talking about the fugitive from 1993, starring harrison ford and that iconic scene with the train crash. union pacific crews will use a crane today to lift the railcar out of the water and set it on a flatbed to haul away. >> we look at it and we're like, whoa, that's not doable but when our crews look at it, they are trained and have been doing it for years they say, that's doable. >> reporter: union pacific says their patrols and inspections exceed federal regulations but you cannot control what mother nature does. the scene set to be clear here at 4 p.m. live in sunol, kiet do, kpix 5. of those nine people hurt, three were taken to washington hospital in fremont. kpix 5's jackie ward reports from the hospital and has firsthand accounts from passengers. >> reporter: the three people who were taken here were all treated for minor injuries. two of them have since been released. one is still here seeking care but is listed in good condition. once the train came to what

passengers describe as a jarring stop, nothing could be heard but screams. >> it was like an eerie calm, um, it was quiet except for the screams for help. you know? so i was trying to, um, keep everybody calm around me. >> reporter: the conductor had been tossed from the train car and ended up in the water of alameda creek. >> people were crying for help. i went to find the conductor. i keep a flashlight in my bag. and, um, he had flown out the window, the front window, when it hit. um, it was straight out, had a bad head injury. >> reporter: nine people were sent to various hospitals for treatment, four with serious but nonlife-threatening injuries, five with minor injuries. before responders arrived, uninjured passengers sprang into action. >> we got everyone out of the number one car. there's a couple folks injured so we had them just positioned there on the ground. and then a couple of people who

were more severely injured we left them in place inside the car and waited for the paramedics to get there move them safely. >> reporter: unhurt passengers were able to get home by 1 a.m. even veteran first responders are saying it's a miracle that no one killed. in fremont, jackie ward, kpix 5. >> today all ace trains from the sillicon valley to the central valley acanceled. ace has had only one other derailment in 10 years. ace says its transit partners will offer services. capitol corridor will honor ace tickets from fremont to san jose. they are valid while ace is not in service. you can stay with kpix 5 for the latest on the investigation into the train derailment. also, look for updates online at cbssf.com and on our social media platforms. just minutes ago san jose police provided an update on an officer shooting that killed a

man. police say they were responded to a domestic violence call around 6:15 last night at 3rd and martha streets. an officer says a man stabbed his wife and was shot by an officer as he walked back towards the house where the stabbing occurred. the suspect is dead and two other people have life- threatening stab wounds. witnesses say the confrontation with police happened fast. >> all i can hear is drop the knife, drop the knife, i'm warning you, drop the knife. we're look, i'm thinking, is this guy really going to shoot? next thick you know, bam, bam -- next thing you know, bam, bam, bam, six quick shots. >> people in the area say crime is spiking in the area. this is the first san jose police shooting in 2016. demolition is delayed on an apartment building near a crumbling cliff in pacifica. city leaders say it's now scheduled for thursday at 320 esplanade. crews with working to clear out any signs of lead, asbestos and other harmful materials. the building has been vacant since 2010. city leaders call the property

a threat to public safety. today, a san francisco supervisor said mayor lee has failed to address the scale of the city's homeless problem. david campos wants to declare a shelter emergency invoking a state law designed for natural disasters. he also wants more navigation centers for finding housing. right now there's only one in the mission. >> i volunteer my district to be the first place to host a navigation center in the city. more than a year later, the navigation center has proven to be successful. hundreds of people have been placed in housing because of the navigation center. >> campos wants to build six new centers using existing city funds. more voters are going to the polls to take part in presidential primaries today. michigan and mississippi will hold primaries for both parties. republican also vote in idaho and hawaii. cbs news' kenneth craig has a look at how the race for the white house is shaping up. >> reporter: voters are already heading into the booths in

michigan. it's big prize for both democrats and republicans. >> the numbers i just got from michigan are -- are tremendous -- tremendous numbers. >> reporter: donald trump leads the polls in the great lakes state but even his advisers admit it's been a bad week for the businessman as all of his opponents continue their attacks against him. >> so far, every, single person that has attacked me has gone down. is that true? >> yeah! >> reporter: one person who has made up ground in the michigan polls is john kasich. the ohio governor has campaigned extensively in the state and says he is going to do better than expected. >> we are going to get some momentum out of michigan. we're going to win ohio. there's going to be campaigning all across the country. it's going to be exciting. >> reporter: but texas senator ted cruz is urging john kasich and marco rubio followers to switch sides. >> if you don't want to see donald trump as our nominee, i ask you to join us. we welcome you to our team. ... as it headed from malaya to china. the plane has not been found .... and relatives of the 2 board are still today marks two years since a malaysia flight disappeared going from malaysia to china. the plane hasn't been found and relatives of the 239 people on board are still grieving. some at beijing prayed together and malaysia's parliament held a moment of silence. the woman whose husband was on board an in-flight supervisor wants the search to continue. >> keep the search going on. >> i'm imagining the last moments, what they are thinking off. >> debris has turned up that may be from the plane. last week a piece of metal was found off mozambique and last july, a section of wing washed up on reunion island near africa. sponsors nike, porsche and others have cut ties with tennis star maria sharapova after she failed a drug test. she said she had been taking a

drug for 10 years for health issues. the player said it was not on the banned list until the rules changed this year but the drug manufacturer said the normal course of treatment is about four to six weeks. this weekend's soaker brought so much rain, folsom dam had to open the floodgates. it's the first time in years it's had this much rain. the bureau of reclamation says they have about 8,000 cubic feet of water rushing at folsom per second. the last time they came close to that was in 2012. the lake is 68% full. that's a great sign but we need more. guess what, it's coming. >> we saw sunshine this morning, right, frank and michelle? >> we did. >> yes. >> you're not going to see it again until a week from wednesday. i want to call on this number, 56 degrees, willie. willie makes a great observation this afternoon. he is talking about it's trying so hard to rain but it's not

getting to the ground. willie, that's what we refer to as virga! take a look at our hi-def doppler radar. it looks ominous, doesn't it? it looks like we are getting pounded in portions of the north bay. but i'm getting one observation from sebastopol saying it's just merely a sprinkle or two. it's got to blast through a lot of dry air mass, so it's trying to rain but it's just not hitting the ground. you can see a little rain right there a sprinkle over there and there you have the transamerica pyramid. boy, has it cloud up! temperatures hasn't moved in san francisco. it's still 55 degrees. it's 53 in santa rosa after dipping down to 39 early this morning. the clouds thicken. we'll have a wet wednesday morning for the morning commute and more rain thursday, friday, saturday, and sunday, here's your futurecast, look at this tomorrow morning.

precipitation goes away wednesday afternoon. but upstream thursday morning commute, a more potent area of low pressure. it's going to tap into that atmospheric river back here. hardest hit will be san francisco to the north. tomorrow barely any totals, .2" in san rafael, .16" in san francisco. but as we go towards thursday towards friday, from about san francisco to the north, we have some rainfall here. we can have some hydroissues across the north bay by friday morning. the south bay has under .10" of rain. temperatures: temperatures slightly below average. it's still my miracle march with rain tomorrow, rain on thursday, more rain by friday with a possibility of hydro issues in the form of urban and

>> there's my youngest brother edgar. >> as you come tonight. >> reporter: tuesday evening, new hope church concord. the sanchez family is here. rye mundo sanchez that is found something here needed. >> my youth pastor was able to really raise me ever since i was young. and i don't mean raise me as a parent but just raise me as a role model. >> reporter: raymundo was only 6 when his father died of heart attack. his mother went to work cleaning houses to support four boys. they moved a lot. eventually, they moved to a dangerous neighborhood in bay point. >> that was probably one of the things that impacted my family the most. we are just in the middle of all the violence. >> reporter: the older boys began to turn to the streets. >> she was heartbroken. she was really heartbroken especially, um, with my brother had gone, um, the wrong direction. i could see it in her eyes that she felt powerless. >> reporter: he was in charge

his younger brother while his mom work. he did something else that would change his family's life. >> the classroom was where i felt like i had control of my life. i knew it was the way out. >> reporter: he has almost perfect grades at concord high and keeps his college counselor very busy. >> i am his secretary. i get emails all weekend long from him saying i need to do this can you proofread this? >> i'm going to be the first person in my family to go to college. >> not living in a community or in a family that has done the college experience. he has had to do a lot of leg work on his own. he has had to research these colleges on his own. >> i want to be able to provide a household for my kids when i'm older that encourages them to be academically strong and academically motivated. >> reporter: meanwhile, the church has motivated his brothers in a whole new way. >> you love us and you care for us. >> they come from the streets and now they are involved in
