aadd to the adjustment. dr. jill joins us to talk about with cubby. >> hi there, sweetheart. how are you? >> this is second appearance. >> he is a dog star. [ laughter ] >> tell us, i guess you have to do a little prep before that baby comes home. what should you do to get the house ready? >> this is a question i get asked frequently because people have babies and they already have a pet usually in the household so one of the things that we recommend is that you bring something home from the hospital that smells like the baby whether it's a blanket or article of clothing so that the dog has an opportunity or the cat has an opportunity to smell it and get used to that smell and when you bring the baby home, it's very important to not just put the baby on the floor and let everybody come by. >> cubby, meet max. >> exactly. you want to, uhm -- animals pick up on what the owners are thinking so if you are relaxed about it and not worried, then they will not perceive the new baby as being a threat to the household. >> is there a time when you can finally just say, you know, is it two months, three months or just call them as you see it?
12:23 pm
>> that's great question. so here's the thing. infants have a unique cry and even the most well beloved and behaved pet in your household could potentially attack an infant simply because that cry sounds like a predator, like prey in the wild and the dog feels like a predator and it's an instinct. so you never leave your pet unsupervised with the baby and we are specifically talking about infants. there's a different plan of action with a toddler. >> is there an adjustment with a different type of pet or say a different breed of dog? >> so every animal is different, that's right. so some animals are chilled no matter what like labs are chill. cubby might be a little more anxious. >> sometimes you see a newborn with a german shepherd. but it works out. >> honestly, never leave your pet unsupervised with an infant. >> okay. cubby, nice job. thank you, dr. jill. if you would like to talk to dr. jill and ask her a question, nice and easy to do, just send us an email at just email pets@kpix.com or on our facebook page, and we'll have our pet expert give you an answer every friday right here at noon.
