>> live, from the cbs bay area studios, this is kpix5 news. >> soaking rain from back to back bay area storms, roads are slick and drivers are taking it slow. another factor, the wind. strong gusts sending trees toppling over onto homes and power lines. and, in the sierra, heavy snowfall may be to blame for an accident that sent a chp officer flying into the middle of the freeway. good evening to you. i'm juliette goodrich. brian hackney is off tonight. we have team coverage on the storm. first, julie watt tracking the rain now. >> reporter: we have rain on high-def doppler. not as widespread as earlier today. as i pause this three-hour loop, we have more rain headed into the north bay, also some in the east bay as well.

we zoom into where the heaviest rain is now. we have a moderate to heavy cell north of union city. fremont getting light to moderate rainfall. right across 580 headed toward livermore. a moderate cell there. and san jose, a light shower passing through the area. milpitas and fremont. more rain moving on shore in bodega bay, monte rio. you will all be getting rain. we will see more rain as we move on through the next 24 hours. in the meantime, flash flood watch remains in effect for the north bay. due to the rain we will see sunday, also want to note the russian river at guerneville looking like it will be just below flood stage. we will talk about it coming up in a bit. this storm is making a mess. falling trees and crumbling

cliffs are among the problem. emily turner is live in pacifica with a look. >> reporter: it has been a mess. the crumbling cliffs are affecting demolition behind me. the falling trees have made a mess of the north bay and they have weather yet to endure. this has been the sound track to the bay area's most recent round of storms. the already saturated soil couldn't hold any more water much less the weight of trees like these in marin county. this one near point reyes took out power lines as it fell causing portions of highway 1 to be closed. and trees have been coming down all day all over the bay area. >> i was inside my house, i felt a big shaking in the ground. when i came out later i saw what happened. >> reporter: this house in pacifica was crushed beneath a beautiful city tree overnight. nobody was harmed. but the tree was. tenants now have to find another place to stay. >> it appear it is soil just got too wet. with the stiff winds an the

weight of the rain on the tree, it just laid itself down. >> reporter: trees are not the only thing toppling. crews in pacifica are working around the clock to fix the cliff side where several streets have been caving in. with more wind and more rain headed their way, they are racing against the weather to out maneuver mother nature's storms. >> we are monitoring the cliff edge to see if there were any changes, erosion over the course of the week, the storms we have noticed some additional erosion. >> reporter: and one of the things that she is talking about is that cliff edge. that has to do a lot with this demolition right here behind me. right now, pacifica is tearing this building down. it has been empty since 2010, but this recent round of rain has been so bad they couldn't risk it falling into the ocean. so they started this morning at 9:00. it will probably take four or five days. once they do, they will leave the foundation below it to stabilize the cliff.

there is a possibility there might be weather delays. if there's heavy wind and rain, they have to call it quits because they don't want to do anything to harm the environment. in pacifica, emily turner, kpix5 news. >> thank you emily. in marin county, mud slides have closed bolinas fairfax road. the road is unstable and trees are coming down. the road is expected to be closed through tomorrow. the russian river remains just below flood stage tonight. but it is still very soggy in guerneville where they are keeping a close watch on things. it is expected to crest monday. and check this out. there is so much water in this reservoir in marin county it is rushing down the spillway. just a week ago it wasn't even close to full. now it is overflowing. and heavy know is making the roads dangerous in the

sierra. here is a look at donner summit. a chp officer was hit by an suv in the snow. macy jenkins takes us through what happened. >> reporter: traffic comes to a halt on 80 westbound as chp tries to clean up an accident. an officer was out of his vehicle just wrapping up after responding to an earlier collision. >> most other officers had already cleared the accident. he was there providing traffic control. >> reporter: chp says that is when a nissan path finder tried to change lanes and struck the officer sending him flying several feet landing face down in the median. the driver has been identified as id sun yung. >> she made contact with the officer. >> reporter: she lost control of her vehicle. cal fire rushed to transport the officer to a hospital, but weather made it impossible to

fly. instead, a harrowing journey by ambulance to renown regional medical center in reno. >> he is stable, but it is a very serious situation. >> reporter: officer pete mann says as the snow continues, he fears he has not seen the last accident for the evening. >> we have been seeing the hardest snowfall come during the nighttime houser and we are expecting the hardest snow for this yet to come. >> that was macy jenkins reporting. we will continue to track this storm and bring you updates on any snow or rain related problems. a man is on the run after shooting two people in a normally quiet peninsula town. it happened in lahonda near alpine road. someone saw the suspect coming out of the home. he went to confront the suspect and was shot. someone else came out and saw him sped off in the homeowner's car. the gunman is white in his late 20s to early 30s . five foot

eight to six feet tall wearing a green jacket and white tank top. he might be wearing a baseball cap. the car is a 2006 green jaguar station wagon with a license plate of 7lwv742 and police tell us the two people shot are expected to survive. also, police are looking for a driver who started shooting at a party bus this morning. it happened around 2:30 on interstate 80 east of the bay bridge. police say an suv pulled up next to the bus. someone opened fire. an then, sped off. one of the passengers is being treated for critical injuries. but police say the victims refuse to cooperate in this investigation. and a man is behind bars tonight after a violent shoot- out with san jose police. officers got reports of a man firing a weapon in a 7/11 on fruitvale avenue. when they caught up with the suspect, the situation took a

dangerous turn. >> the driver did not follow commands an at one point produced what appeared to be a high-powered ar-15 assault rifle and began firing at the officers. >> the officers fired back, wounding the man. he eventually surrendered. onto campaign 2016 now. a couple of caucuses today for the republicans. marco rubio won in washington dc. ted cruz won in wyoming, sort of. he gets nine delegates tonight, but the rest of the wyoming delegates are awarded at the state's convention. however, a lot of the attention tonight is on donald trump's campaign. over the last 24 hours, it has gotten considerable backlash as the rallies have grown more violent. cbs reporter brooke says trump is shrugging it off and blaming another candidate. >> reporter: police used foggers to dispurse protesters outside a donald trump rally in

kansas city saturday night. earlier, secret service agents formed a circle around the presidential candidate as the man tried to rush the stage at a rally in ohio. and trump was forced to cancel an event friday as fights broke out between his supporters and protesters in chicago. chaos there spilled into the streets where police made several arrests including cbs journalists. >> there have been other groups of coordinated protests at past rallies but nothing as massive as what i saw last night. >> reporter: the republican front runner declined to take responsibility. >> they want me to tell my people please be nice. be nice. >> reporter: instead, he claims supporters of democratic presidential candidate bernie sanders for instigating the violence. >> what the supporters are doing is responding to a candidate who has in fact, in many ways, encouraged violence.

>> reporter: trump's gop rivals criticized the protesters but also faulted the billionaire. >> i continue to support the republican nominee. but, getting harder everyday. >> responsibility begins and ends at the top. >> reporter: trump has rallies in three states scheduled for sunday. well, the storm system that brought historic flood to the southern u.s. is weakening tonight. but flood watches and warnings are still posted in at least six states. david bedknow reports from louisiana. >> reporter: this afternoon, flood water was seeping through sandbags in bosier city. crews added more bags in the low lying vulnerable areas along a levy which protects 2500 homes. the home of chris smith and his wife laura backs up to the levy. they were ordered to evacuate but decided noted to. >> i had surgery monday to get rid of cervical cancer and i was advised to not to travel.

>> reporter: cattle lake expected to rise. across louisiana l is moderate to major flooding on 50% of the state's bayous and rivers right now. laurie bar row's family tried to reach her. they found her trapped in her own home. she lost everything during hurricane katrina. >> it is heart-breaking. it is deja vu. >> reporter: back in north louisiana in bosier city, the smith family is ready with sandbags. >> they asked if i could help. i said i have to worry about my own home. >> reporter: i'mwalking on the levy they are concerned about. nothing is seeping in now. but you can see what it did the last several hours. those are the homes they are concerned about. the major said don't let the sunshine deceive you. we are not out of the woods

into >> take a look at this. a car jumps the curb, goes the wrong way, takes out a power pole and plows into a bus. you can see a man waiting at the bus stop quickly get up and make a run for it. he got out of the way just in time. this happened in albuquerque, new mexico. the driver told police he blacked out and doesn't remember crossing the median. no one was seriously hurt. a south african teenager made a startling discovery. he was vacationing in mozambique. he discovered part of a wing from a plane. investigators are looking to see if it could be part of the missing malaysian airline flight 370. at first his family thought it was trash, but then he pointed out the rivet holes. back now to the weather. they dodged a bullet in the north bay. the russian river came close to flooding but tonight, it has dropped. andria borba found out all the rain has still left plenty of

places underwater. >> reporter: in guerneville and throughout much of soggy sonoma county, river watching is the hobby of the day. >> it is insane. we are checking everything out. >> reporter: the stream of car and foot traffic on church street saturday was almost as steady as the stream of water headed toward the russian river. >> the good thing is not a lot of debris in it. >> reporter: it crested on friday well below flood stage but swamped johnson's beach and sent river water right to the edge of the guerneville lodge. >> you see the post here. >> reporter: further east on river road, this vineyard was almost completely covered by the rushing russian river. >> i think it is about four or five feet deep at most. >> reporter: with grape stakes barely peeking out above the water. >> i have been here before when you see vehicles floating. it is kind of crazy. we didn't want to get any water on our truck. >> reporter: it wasn't just rising water but the constant soaking causing headache ins

sonoma county droving along old monte rio road was impossible after rain saturated hillsides came tumbling done. >> hopefully it will back down a bit and it will be dry. >> reporter: the russian river is expected to crest here in guerneville once again monday, but once again below flood stage. andria borba, kpix5. and julie watts joins us now with our full forecast. julie? >> we do still have a flood watch in effect for the north bay, we will keep a close eye. as you can see now in high-def doppler, more rain headed into the north bay in santa rosa. we have some pockets of light to moderate rainfall in the east bay. although the showers are tapering off this evening. moderated rainfall for union city. pleasanton also seeing moderate showers. heading toward livermore. and scattered showers throughout the south bay. light showers in campbell. toward san jose. and then, up into the east foothills. overall, sures will be tapering off during the overnight hours. it will be a little damp.

temperature wise, we are in the 50s area wide. here is a look at the golden gate bridge with a few rain drops on the lens. you can see why we are seeing so much rain. take a look at this. a direct hit from our jet stream just ushering that moisture right our way. keeping us unsettled through the second half of the weekend. futurecast times it out for us. here we are right now. again more rain coming into the north bay and then tapers off for the south and the eastern portion of the viewing area. as we advance on into tomorrow morning, you will notice 8:00 a.m., widespread light rain with pockets of moderate to heavy rainfall scattered throughout the bay area. as i pause around lunchtime, a similar story. we will see a couple of breaks in the rain, but still pretty much widespread rain with pockets of moderate to heavy rainfall. tapering off as we head into the evening hours. here we are at 9:00. lingers showers but even those taper off in the overnight hours. maybe a few scattered showers monday morning. keep in mind wind gusts.

this is the next 24 hours. you can see winds gusting upwards of 30 miles an hour. not sustained but considering all the saturated soil, it is something to be mindful of. winter storm warning in effect in the high country. snow levels will lower to 5,000 feet. snowfall accumulation anywhere from 24 to 36 inches so we will have some nice powder an some spring skiing conditions before too long. tomorrow, however, temperature ins the 50s and the 60s pretty much area wide. and we have as i mentioned one more day of rain on sunday. monday, some lingers showers. we start to dry out tuesday. and then, we warm, high pressure builds back in. look at this. wednesday, thursday, friday. warming into the upper 70s . maybe even flirting with some 80s in some spots by the end of the week. so you can get the days off and it might be a great day to do a little spring skiing. >> why not? >> it will be beautiful. and again, don't forget ... don't remember. you can see more rain headed into the north bay. this is just the beginning of the next round of showers l really making their way in for tomorrow. a closer look at the east bay shows we still have some light to moderate cells throughout fremont. pleasanton, walnut creek and a few showers across sunnyvale, san jose. we will see more tomorrow. so, get ready. keep the umbrellas handy. >> absolutely. lucky for parade goers, it stayed away earlier in san francisco. the annual saint patrick's day parade rolled down market street and ended at civic center. there was live music. floats, games, and of course ... plenty of green. remember, clocks spring forward.
