right now. kiet. >>reporter: good afternoon, fra. a huge mess indeed. you can see these street lamp poles that ruptured that gas line. it missed the cable by a few inches. it feeds data to the town. it could have been worse. at last checked, the sink hole is ten-by-ten feet wide. it makes up for headaches and inconvenience. pg and e crews have been diverting the gas around the area. once they do a small army of workers will relight the pilot lights to others. >> we're bringing in 200 gas supervisors from northern california to make sure we get to the 2500 homes and businesses as quickly as possible and in a safe manner. >> this began sunday afternoon when the sidewalk opened up at

senter street following days of heavy rainfall. the traffic pole fell straight down and ruptured the gas line below. >> are you able to blame this on el nino. >> i'm not willing to blame it on anybody until we know the cause. we have a lot of water under there where it came from and where it went, that's to be determined. >> the sinkhole knocked out power to the busiest strip malls in town. restaurants, cafes, the 24-hour fitness all shut down for a second day. >> i had hip replacement and this is the first week -- this week i can use 24-hour fitness. i guess i'll go back to walking. >> amy was surprised to see her son's daycare shut down. she works at home as a project manager and she'll have to keep her son home. >> is it challenging to keep your son home while you work? >> it's challenging. >> these are the 200 pg and e workers ready to relight the pilot lights.

it's fuzzy, but there could have gas back to the homes as early as this evening. live in rocket, kiet do. thank you kiet. several homes nearly lost their foundation. the hillside is sliding below the homes there. homeowners say the utility hasn't done enough so help so far. a family tragedy in the east bay. a couple killed in a crash near discovery bay. the couple's three young children survive, but now face life without their parents. kpix reporter jackie is following the story. >>reporter: a car crossed into the eastbound lane causing them to turn away. that move forced a van to overturn and plunged into a canal. the town and country was carrying three adults and three children. two of the adults died. they're the

parents of the two children. chp hasn't determined an exact cause yet, but think speed is a factor. >> they need to slowdown. the roadway is straight, but it's dark and two lanes. one in either direction. they need to slowdown. >> drivers here agree. they travel along this highway and say it can get bad. >> people realize the more congested areas and tend to slowdown -- in the rural areas they think they can go faster. you have to be able to stop your car. >> the recent storms rolling through the area, slick roads may have played a factor in the accident as well. >> i can imagine at 11:30 at night, roads were pretty slippery and you should slowdown and be careful at night. >> but even on a clear day, it's the speed which drivers travel which makes this two-lane

highway treacherous which leaves no room for error. >> do you drive defensively? >> yeah. people are trying to get to work as fast as they can, and yeah, constantly having to dodge people. >> the driver of the chevy survived and was taken to san joaquin hospital. the third adult in the town and country also survived along with the three children who are being treated at tracy hospital for minor injuries. the three surviving children are ages 10, 9, and 2. two boys and a girl. new at noon, the chp officer who was hit by a car while directing traffic in the sierra over the weekend has passed away. officer nathan taylor had been with the highway patrol for six years. taylor was standing outside of his patrol car saturday helping with traffic after an earlier crash near donna subity. a driver switched lanes and accelerated -- when she lost control of her suv, she

hit the officer. taylor was thrown several feed into the snow bank. he passed away from his injured. late last night, the driver of the suv was not hurt. work is wrapping up to demolish a cliff side apartment in pacifica. the rain stalled the project over the weekend, but crews are finishing up the tear down. it had been red tagged in 2020. the storms eroded and the building was left in a dangerous spot. the city decided it was too risky to leave it standing, so down it comes. varying headlines. investigators looking for the cause of a fire in san francisco at 22nd and mission just before midnight. the building has been empty since a deadly fire january of last year. interesting today for three san jose students accused of forcing a -- around their african americans neck. the da's office is asking for a 120 day sentence in jail and 50 hours of community service.

richard ramirez... known as new developments in a tick tore yours murder in san francisco. richard ramirez known as the night stalker was in jail for multiple murders in california when he was linked to the 1984 rape and murder of a 9-year-old girl in san francisco. authorities believe he had help. the new york post reports that semen from the second suspect was found on a hanker chief near the woulded body. 32 people hurt and 2 critical after a train derailed in kansas. the train -- we have more on the accident. >>reporter: teams of

investigators are now on the scene in is the western kansas to try to determine what sent an amtrak train off the tracks. >> there's a derailment. >> first responders raced to free passengers trapped inside with 8 cars derailed. >> we have a ladder up. we're starting evacuations. so many people off the top. >> the amtrak southwest chief carrying 131 passengers and 14 crew members was traveling from los angeles heading for chicago. 25-year-old daniel surva was reading onboard and he felt turbulence that turned drastic. >> when i opened the room door, there was a large burning smell. i got outside and there was a lot of people. people were crying for help, looking for folks. so everyone was just kind of on both sides of the train kind of looking for other people. family members. >> more than 30 people were taken to nearby hospitals. no word on how fast the train was going when it went off the
