senseless tragedy that has overwhelmed this country is fast giving way to anger that it could have been avoided. already the investigation has begun revealing a catalog of mistakes and missed opportunities that may have cost lives. the alleged bomb maker, najim laachraoui on the top of the list of suspects. thought to be the man on the left in the security picture he apparently managed to evade the manhunt and get to airport with a suitcase packed full of explosives and blow himself up. two suicide bombers, and brothers alike, ibrahim el bakraoui and khalid el bakraoui, now reports indicate both men may have been part of a plan to target a nuclear facility. manhunts are now under way for the last unidentified suspect at the airport. the man in the hat. and accomplice to the train bomber who belgian media reports is depicted in this drawing. the suspects of the twin attacks have been linked to the alleged paris attackers, salah abdeslam. who has been behind bars since

his arrest last week. his lawyer, sven mary spoke with us after the hearing. >> he wants to go back to france. i think it's whatever. he had to go back to france. it changed his point of view. the beginning. he wanted -- that, that -- extradition to france took some more time. he changed his mind. >> reporter: a growing sense that abdeslam ee capture served for a trigger of the terror cell to strike the brussels airport and train station in the center of the capital in near simultaneous suicide attacks. and yet, another development, turkey is now saying that its security forces grabbed ibrahim el bakraoui, one of the suicide bombers at the airport, at the border with syria last sum r and warned belgian authorities that he was "a foreign terrorist fighter."

investigators are learning more about the sophisticated bombs used in the attacks. allen pizzey has the details. >> reporter: the bombs they set off were designed to reach max mull casualties. used tatp, and the mother of satan. tuesday in brussels. 33 pounds of it and bomb making materials and 150 liters of acetate, water, suitcase of nails and screws were found in an apartment used by the bombers. most hideous ingredients nails and screws. this x ray shows a bolt embedded in the chest of a victim. the scene of the airport was worse than anything he dealt with during a tour in afghanistan, the military nurse said. >> war injuries. a lot of bleedings, by shrapnel. legs were ripped off. things like that. you wouldn't normally see that.

not in, it's -- [ indiscernible ] >> not the kind of thing you expect in a civilian situation? >> not at all. >> reporter: the jihadis consider everywhere a war zone. the boston marathon bombers used pressure cook herbs filled with nails and ball bearings. paris attackers, used suicide vests, and showed high level of sophistication and the input of a master bomt maker according to experts. the real worry is how many of them are still out there. a report by the associated press, quoting unnamed officials says there are believed to be as many as 400 isis trained jihadis in europe, and waiting for a time and place to strike. here in the united states, government scientists in a race to devise a machine that can detect the explosive tatp. so far, the job has fall in to sniffer dogs. kris van cleave reports. >> fire in the hole!
