perry work it at the academy of country music awards. the highlights and the big winners from country music's big night. good morning from the studio 57 newsroom at cbs news headquarters here in new york. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. amtrak says it will operate a normal schedule today along its northeast corridor. two workers were killed yesterday when an amtrak train en route from new york to savannah hit a piece of heavy equipment on the track south of philadelphia. the collision caused a derailment, injuring 30 passengers, and caused major delays. don champion it at the accident scene in chester, pennsylvania. don, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. overnight, we did see crews going in and around the derailment site behind me. right now, the investigation

centers around figuring why the two construction workers who were killed were on the track when the train came through. federal investigators continue to examine the heavily damaged front end of amtrak train 89 overnight, as they begin piecing together what led to sunday's deadly accident. >> we will be looking at mechanical operations, signal, track, human performance, and survival factors. >> reporter: the train was on its way from new york city to savannah, georgia, yesterday morning when it slammed into a backhoe on the track south of philadelphia, killing the backhoe operator and a supervisor. photos show heavy damage on the first car of the train and blown-out windows. >> all you could see is a lot of dirt and debris flying past the train and there was a couple of sort of like fire flashes. >> i just called some of my church members and asked them to pray. >> reporter: among other things, investigators want to know why that heavy piece of equipment was even on the active track in the first place. >> sometimes, there is human error.

sometimes, things happen. but there is virtually no excuse for a backhoe to be on an active track. >> reporter: sunday's accident comes less than a year after the derailment of amtrak train 1888 in philadelphia which killed eight people. as part of the investigation, video from the train and the train as event data recorder are being reviewed. at last check last night, three of the passengers who were hurt were still in the hospital. it's not known if that number changed overnight. and, again, amtrak plans to restore normal service today. >> don champion in chester, thanks. last night, an amtrak train hit a man on the tracks north of philadelphia. it was unclear why he was on the tracks. police say he lost his leg as a result of the collision. yesterday afternoon, one person was killed when an amtrak train hit a vehicle on the tracks in northern illinois. there were 248 passengers on the amtrak train headed for california. none of them were injured. now to the weather. the calendar says it's spring,

but for a lot of folks here in the northeast, it feels a lot like winter. this morning, a spring storm is bringing cold temperatures, snow, and gusty winds from the great lakes to the northeast. winter weather warnings are posted in new york, massachusetts, and vermont. the high today in boston is expected to be 33 degrees. 34 in providence. be in massachusetts, about 20 miles southeast of boston, a man and a woman were killed when a rotted tree weakened by the storm fell on their car. in upstate new york, whiteout conditions blinded drivers, causing a 12-vehicle pileup. now that crash included eight than cars and a bus. several people were injured. than powerful winds with gusts exceeding 50 miles an hour downed power lines and trees. tens of thousands in the northeast remain without power. one of the main terminals at a newark liberty international airport have been evacuated because of an apparent fire. smoke first appeared in terminal b early this morning. the cause of the fire is not known. on to politics now.

tomorrow's wisconsin priry looks to be a close race for both the democrats and the republicans. but the outcome could have a significant impact for donald trump, where a loss would make it much harder to win the delegates needed for the nomination before the convention. brian webb reports. >> reporter: at a campaign rally in west alice, wisconsin, donald trump said it's time for john kasich to get out of his way. >> you shouldn't be littering up the process, because that is what he is doing. it's really a disgrace, i'll tell you. >> reporter: kasich tweeted, that's not how our republic works, donald. we will keep fighting until someone reaches the majority of delegates. ♪ ted cruz made several stops in wisconsin sunday, insisting he's the republican's best shot at winning the white house. >> nominating donald trump would be a train wreck and that is not fair to train wrecks. >> reporter: a cbs news battleground tracker poll shows ted cruz six points ahead of

"the oregonian" reports that abby wambach is facing a dui charge and heat from other

soccer players. portland police say the retired world cup star failed a sobriety test saturday night in a traffic stop. at least two u.s. men's people gloated on social media, still upset about wambach's criticism of foreign guys on the national squad. "the new york times" reports a senator's warning about an explosive commonly used by terrorists. chuck schumer of new york says detectors must be developed and deployed to stop tatp. the materials can be made from materials at drug and hardware stores. >> it's as easy to make as cake. >> researchers are working on an electronic trace detection system but it hasn't been field-tested yet. a new effort to reverse the flow of migrants in europe. greece sent more than 200 refuges to turkey by ship today. it is the start of a european union plan to block asylum seekers.

a private space company is a step closer to taking tourists into orbit. a blue origin rocket had its third successful launch and returned saturday. >> it's becoming apparent that blue origin has a maturing technology that they are very confident will be able to carry people into space within the next two years. >> the company was founded by amazon chief jeff bezos. if other tests go according to plan, it could launch space rides in 2018. on the cbs "moneywatch" a possible winner in the bidding war over virgin america, and super heros lose their punch at the box office. jill wagner is at the new york stock exchange with that and more. a solid week on wall street capped by better than expected job numbers. the dow gained 278 points for the week. the s&p finished nearly 37 points higher.

the nasdaq ended the week 140 points higher. it's reported a deal for alaska air to acquire virgin america could be announced as early as today. "wall street journal" says the deal is worth about $2.5 billion, beating rival bid from jetblue. the deal is still being negotiated but if it does go through, alaska airlines would become america's fifth largest carrier. a part shortage is delaying shipments. virt of the virtual headset oculus. facebook didn't specify which part is the problem or how long the delay would be. affected customers will get an e-mail for the update on the shipping date. preorders for the new model tesla, the model 3 are surging. they received 276,000 orders as of saturday. with all of those orders, turn into actual sales, tesla would make about $10 billion in revenue. the tesla model 3 sales for

here's a look at today's forecast in some cities around the country. well, it may not have felt like it, but it certainly looked like major league baseball's opening day. fans at the cardinals/pirates game had to bundle up. first-pitch temperature was just above freezing. the pirates fans hardiness paid off, though. pittsburgh got the win 4-1. picking up where the 2015 season left off. the mets started their season against world series champions the royals. the mets had to watch as the championship banner was raised before the game. the royals, again, got the best

of the mets 4-3! history is repeating itself in the ncaa women's basketball tournament. uconn huskies are marching on to their fourth straight final and hoping to make it four championships in a row. it wasn't a fair fight on sunday. husky shellacked oregon 80-51. with a win, gene auriemma would break john wooden championship win with 11. the orange beat the washington huskies 80-59. they now have the daunting task of taking on the uconn huskies tomorrow night. the ncaa men's basketball championship is set. it was a battle of the two seeds when villanova took on oklahoma saturday night in what was set to be an epic game. instead, was an epic blowout. nova mostly silenced ncaa player of the year buddy hield to wallop the sooners 95-51.

nova will take on unc in tonight's championship. syracuse kept it close with unc in the first half, but the tar heels kept hammering in the second. with a little more than 7:00 to play, it looked like syracuse was staging a second half comeback, but unc went on a run and kept the game out of reach for good, winning 83-66. unc plays for their sixth title tonight. tip-off is at 9:19 eastern on tbs. count tiger out of this year's masters. on his website, tiger woods said he is sitting out this year's tournament. woods has battled a bad back for months and said playing this week just wouldn't be best for his long-term health and career. woods did not set a timetable for his return to the tour. here is a timetable for you, though. masters coverage tees off right here on saturday with the third round starting at 3:00 p.m. eastern. final found action tees off sunday at 2:00 p.m. eastern right here on cbs.

investigators are trying to figure out just why a piece of heavy equipment was on the same track as an amtrak train. two workers were killed when the train hit the backhoe in the morning south of philadelphia. the locomotive derailed and some 30 passengers were injured. a winter-like storm has brought snow, cold temperatures, and powerful winds to an area from the great lakes to the northeast. winds exceeded 50 miles per hour and some 40,000 customers remain without power. a new study confirms what millions of people taking statins have been complaining about for years. and it may offer a solution. jericka duncan has more.

>> reporter: peggy o'connor, who suffered a heart attack after years of battling high cholesterol, had complained to her doctor about statins she was taking, drugs that can lower bad cholesterol. >> when i started on the statin, i started having muscle spasms. >> reporter: claims like that were initially dismissed by some in the medical community. dr. steven nissan is the lead researcher at the cleveland clinic study. >> we confirmed that this is a problem and it's real and we have given them an alternative. >> reporter: dr. nissan says problems, including muscle pain and weakness, affect up to 10% of people on statins, or 3 million to 4 million americans. the study looked at more than 500 patients who reported side effects and are considered statin intolerant. the patients in the study were given a statin or a sugar pill. about 42% who took a statin experienced muscle pain or weakness. the second part of the study involved testing nonstatin
