>> country music loses a legend from poverty to prison to center stage. a look back at the life of merle haggard. hole in one again and again! see how history was made at augusta before the masters even teed off. good morning from the studio 57 newsroom at cbs news headquarters in new york. i'm meg oliver in for anne-marie green. overnight, a possible tornado caused significant damage at an alabama trailer park. the trailer park is located in montgomery, the state capital. several trailers were damaged by falling trees. some of the downed trees blocked roads, hampering rescue operations, but there are no reports of serious injuries. with the now important new york primary under two weeks away, both donald trump and hillary clinton are working to right the ship. both lost in wisconsin. trump is rejiggering his campaign, while clinton is taking a tougher approach to bernie sanders.

a just released national poll finds sanders and clinton in a virtual tie, and it's not just clinton who has ratcheted up the rhetoric. don champion is in new york. on his home turf, donald trump hit rival ted cruz hard yesterday about comments he made. and the fight between bernie sanders and hillary clinton continues escalating. riding a wave of momentum last night, bernie sanders questioned hillary clinton's readiness for office during a campaign stop in philadelphia. >> i don't think you are qualified if you have voted for the disastrous war in iraq. >> reporter: a clinton spokesman quickly responded online, calling the attack a new low. the stakes are high for clinton as the presidential candidates focus on the new york primary on april 19th. wednesday, clinton sharpened her attacks on sanders by questioning his gun control record and ideas.

>> i am concerned that some of his ideas just won't work because the numbers don't add up. >> reporter: on the republican side, donald trump is looking to rebound in his home state, after tuesday's loss to ted cruz in wisconsin. at a rally on long island, trump hit cruz for criticizing new york values in a past debate. >> i've got this guy standing over there looking at me, talking about new york values with hatred, with hatred of new york. >> reporter: outside people for and against trump rallied. campaigning in new york city, cruz questioned trump's leadership. >> donald has no solutions to the problems we're facing. >> reporter: 95 delegates are on the line for republicans in the state. the new york papers can be notoriously brutal and ted cruz is certainly feeling the sting with today's new york "daily news" cover. a story in the paper highlights how angry new yorkers in the bronx have shouted at cruz over his immigration policies.

today, cruz will meet with former mayor rudy giuliani and community leaders in brooklyn. meg? >> don champion here in new york for us, thank you. this morning, authorities in washington state are looking for two violent offenders who broke out of a mental hospital. the duo escaped wednesday night from the facility, possibly from a broken window in their room. officials say they are armed and dangerous. the suspect with dark hair was arrested for murder but found not competent to stand trial. the older man with blond hair was sent to the hospital for domestic violence. fbi director james comey says the solution the government acquired to hack into an iphone connected to the san bernardino shootings doesn't work on all iphones. comey says the solution is a narrow one and works only on the iphone 5c running the ios 9 program. he says the agency still hasn't decided to tell apple how it hacked into the phone. a 17-year-old texas girl is the 11th person known to have

died due to a malfunctioning takata airbag. she was killed when a 2002 honda civic she was driving crashed on march 31st and the airbag exploded. her car had been recalled several years ago. 14 automakers have recalled 24 million cars and trucks in the u.s. because of the faulty airbags. this morning, whipping winds across the plains are fanning a massive wildfire. four fires combined in northwest oklahoma, scorching at least 55,000 acres of land. in woodward, county, 200 firefighters are trying to beat back flames shooting as high as 100 feet. the fast moving wildfire is being fanned by winds topping 40 miles per hour. george geisler is with the oklahoma forestry service. >> this rain has not had a soaking rain in over a hundred days. the fuels combined with the moisture are calling very erratic fire behavior.

>> reporter: tuesday, four separate fires sparked by arcing power lines downed by high winds merged into one blaze that raged across more than 55,000 acres. val and amy caster of cbs affiliate kw-tv were covering the fire when they spotted jason perks desperately trying to get his road grader out of a ditch. >> he needs to get out. >> i know! >> he can't get out. >> reporter: perks, a woods county conservation worker bailed from his vehicle when the crew drove over to rescue him. >> he ran out of the tractor. get in! hurry up! came over and unlocked the door reality quick. he jumped? . i slammed it in reverse and floored it going into reverse. that's how fast those flames got to us. >> close call. firefighters are still working to determine how many homes have been destroyed. in the meantime, today's forecast calls for more high winds and hot, dry weather. some law professors say the

new mississippi law allowing religious groups and others to deny service to gay and transgender people may be unconstitutional. it possibly violates the 14th amendment which requires equal protection under the law. executives at some major corporations, including ge, dow chemical, pepsi, and hyatt hotels have signed a letter denouncing the law. paris attack suspect salah abdeslam appeared in a brussels court this morning. the hearing was to extend his arrest warrant. he is awaiting for extradition from belgium to france. it took belgian investigators more than four months to capture him. the november attacks in paris killed 130 people. cypress agreed to extradite the suspect in last week's egypt air highjacking. he is accused of hijacking the jet using a fake suicide belt and forcing it to fly to another city. none of the 72 passengers and crew on board were injured. panama is taking a close

look at its offshore financial industry following the leak of millions of documents of offshore accounts used to evade taxes. offshore accounts can be used illegally to shelter or launder money. dozens of politicians and celebrities were named. panama has created an international committee in a way to increase the transparency of the accounts. the university of connecticut honored its championship women's basketball team. the huskies won their fourth consecutive national title tuesday night in a rout over syracuse. it was uconn's 11th national women's title. the uconn seniors finished with 151-5 record. congratulations to them. coming up on the "morning news." making her own headlines. a spunky 9-year-old reporter fires back at her critics. a teacher in newtown, connecticut, is busted for bringing a gun to school. this is the "cbs morning news."

those are some of the headlines on the morning newsstand. the san antonio express news reports the investigation of a violent incident last week in a middle school. >> oh! >> jennifer, are you okay? >> newly released video shows a a school police officer body slamming a girl on to a concrete floor. he was breaking up an argument. the girl's mother says she was knocked unconscious. the officer is on paid leave. the hartford current reports a teacher is accused of bringing a gun to school in a connecticut town where a gunman killed 20 students and teachers four years ago. newtown police charged the science teacher jason adams with gun possession on school ground, a felony. he has a permit for the weapon. he is suspended with pay. "the washington post" reports how a 9-year-old journalist answered those who criticized her for covering a suspected murder. hilde leshak puts out newspaper and has a website in

pennsylvania. she says negative feedback won't stop her. >> some people are supporting me, but most were comments about how i should be, like, playing tea party or playing with dolls instead of, you know, reporting a murder. >> hilde gets help from her sister and her father, a former new york city journalist. the labor department is instituting new rules that should offer more protection for retirement savers. brokers must now act as fiduciaries, trustees who are obligated to put their client's best interests above all and that will likely change the types of investments brokers recommend for retirement funds. the new rules will be phased in starting a year from now. fiat-chrysler is laying off 1300 workers at a michigan assembly plant. the layoffs will begin in july. the workers will be let go for an indefinite time because of slow sales of mid-sized cars the factory makes. recalls from toyota. they include rav 4 and lexus r 23-350 and e-350 are model year 2016. the problem is with the brake assembly that could result in a loss of stability. owners of recalled vehicles will be notified by mail. the clothing retailer gap pulls an ad that some critics say is racist. in the ad, a taller white girl is resting her arm on a shorter
