gains by big banks help trigger strong bay here on wall street. the dow jumped 187 points. the s&p added 20. the nasdaq finished 75 points higher. some 40,000 verizon land line and cable workers are walking the picket lines this morning. they went on strike yesterday in nine eastern states and washington, d.c. they have been working without a contract since august. the key issues are job security and health care. the union say verizon wants to free pensions and layoff workers and rely more on contract workers. verizon says it has hired thousands of nonunion workers to fill in during the strike. a just released survey of workers in silicon valley finds women, on average, offered less in salary than men on jobs. the survey was done by the job search website hired. sometimes the gap is as much as 30%. men are offered higher salaries than women about 69% of the time. the wearable camera maker
