from he said but what he wore. >> the race for the white house is called a circus but it looked like the real thing in japan when a chimp named cha-cha escaped from a zoo and kept a neighborhood on alert for hours. good morning from the studio 57 newsroom at cbs news headquarters here in new york. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. now four days before what has turned out to be a critical primary here in new york, hillary clinton and bernie sanders held their first debate in five weeks last night. with so much at stake, it was a contentious meeting. as the candidates argued over qualifications, foreign policy, and wall street. a just released cbs news poll finds clinton leading trump and cruz a potential november matchup and losing to kasich. but sanders beats all three potential republican candidates. jamie yuccas has more on last night's showdown in brooklyn.

>> reporter: the ninth democratic debate started with fireworks between bernie sanders and hillary clinton and never really stopped. both pounding each other on a wide range of issues. one of the most heated exchanges of the night came as bernie sanders and hillary clinton sparred over the issue of income and equality. >> i am sure a lot of people are very surprised to learn that you supported raising the minimum wage to 15 bucks an hour. >> you know, wait a minute. wait a minute! i have stood on the debate stage with senator sanders eight prior times. >> excuse me. >> i have said -- >> excuse me. secretary. >> reporter: google says vermont senator was the most searched and followed candidate of the night. in one instance, he pounds on clinton after moderators pressed her to release the transcripts of her paid wall street speeches. >> if everybody agrees to do it, because there are speeches for money on the other side, i know that. >> i am going to release all of

the transcripts of the speeches that i gave on wall street behind closed doors. there were no speeches. >> reporter: the stakes are high for sanders and clinton here in new york with 247 delegates on the line. both candidates are vowing to fight all the way to the convention. >> i think we are going to win this nomination, to tell you the truth. >> reporter: a win for clinton in the state would make it mathematically difficult for sanders to catch up. party leaders say now is the time to come together. >> i believe hillary is going to win and i believe there will be unity. >> reporter: the next big prize for democrats is pennsylvania where 210 delegates are at stake. while new york's primary is tuesday, five more eastern states, connecticut, delaware,

around. >> a few hundred protesters, many opposed to trump, marched outside and there were a few arrests. donald trump's campaign manager corey lewandowski is relieved florida prosecutors dropped the charges against him for grabbing a reporter. the palm beach state attorney says there wasn't enough evidence to continue. coming up on "cbs this morning," we will talk with cbs news political director and "face the nation" moderator john dickerson about last night's democratic debate. there were ongoing rescue efforts through the night in southern japan where a powerful earthquake left at least nine dead. this morning an 8-month-old girl was pulled from the rubble alive and apparently unharmed. the magnitude 6.5 quake hit an yied south of tokyo.

"the washington post" says the citadel is considering a request by a prospective muslim student to wear a hijab. if granted, it would apparently

2019 model year. a chevy car flunked a test earlier this year. they are more affordable for low income buyers. delta airlines is dropping the fee it charges for customers who buy their tickets over the phone. the fee was $25. most major airlines charge these fees. the airlines want you to buy your tickets online and it's cheaper than maintaining an agent at a big call center. chipotle is apparently paying a price for a food safety crisis. they will block three years worth of earnings because of the food illness outbreak that started last year. 'cchipotle shares dropped last year. jpmorgan does not expect the fallout to last long.

here's a look at today's forecast in some cities around the country. football fans can start planning for the upcoming season. the nfl released its 2016 schedule last night. on september 8th, the broncos and the panthers kick off the season in a super bowl 50 matchup. cbs is bringing you another season of "thursday night football." the action starts with an afc showdown september 15th between the new york jets and the buffalo bills. the annual wounded warriors ride rolled through washington, d.c. on thursday.

as he has for the last seven years, president obama officially kicked off the race from the white house. the ride takes 65 wounded service members and vets 60 miles over three days. it's a stunning sight. we are talking about hundreds of seals basking in the sun along the new england coast. but as don dahler reports, the seals are a sign of something else lurking in the water. >> reporter: a pilot flying over monomoi island this week captured a stunning image. miles and miles of gray and harbor seals basking in the spring sun. it's not unusual to see seals here this time of year, but what is unusual is seeing this many from this perspective. marine biologist owen nicholas has studied them for 15 years. why has the seal population increased over the past few decades? >> they are exterminated from our water from the 1960 so

you're seeing a recolonization. >> they are not hunted because they are federally protected? >> that's correct. >> reporter: before 1972 when the marine mammal protection act went into effect, sightings of even a single seal were rare. but today, we spotted hundreds on the uninhabited nature reserve where the aerial video was shot. biologists say the resurgent of seals here is likely one of the reasons there has been a rise in the number of sharks in these waters, looking for food. researchers counted 68 great whites off cape cod in 2014. that number doubled to 140 last year. but the hoards of seals are not only attracting sharks. doug finney says they are eating too many fish. >> for a fisherman, that is way too much. it's very taxing on us. >> reporter: an 800-pound male could consume up to 6% of his body weight each day. that is 60 pounds of fish,

john kasich said nominating an unpopular candidate would be a disaster for the party and ted cruz told the gathering that he was confident of winning the nomination. as we mentioned earlier, this year, everyone has three extra days to file their tax returns. it's because of a holiday celebrated in washington, d.c. craig boswell explains. >> reporter: marching bands and parades are part of the celebration of emancipation day every april 16th in washington, d.c. on that day in 1862, president abraham lincoln signed the act freeing more than 3,000 slaves in the district. the d.c. government shuts down on the holiday, but this year, it falls on a saturday, so it will be observed on friday, april 15th, tax day! and that changes the tax filing deadline for everyone across the country to april 18th. music to the ears of tax filers like this lady who is letting block advisers do her taxes this year. >> i mean, i think it's great
