causing a commute nightmare. traffic reporter george rask tells us things are still affected even at this hour. >> indeed they are, michelle. and for those of you who may have been with us during the "kpix 5 morning news," you're aware that we had this big rig that overturned at 3 a.m. on 880 southbound right at "a" street. it managed to block lanes until 10 a.m. and even virtually shut down the northbound lanes of the freeway. now all lanes are open finally. let's take a look, though, at what the chp had to contend with this morning. here's a look at footage that was shot by chopper 5. there you can see not only the big rig, but the large freeway sign. the overhead sign that was anchored in the center divider, that's one of the things that got knocked down and had to be picked up with a crane. the chp tells us how this accident occurred when we spoke with them earlier this morning. >> so we got a call of a vehicle stalled here on the

freeway southbound 880 just south of "a" street. and we heard a couple of vehicles collided into that vehicle. it was a four-vehicle collision with possibility of a hazmat spill from the big rig. >> reporter: while they did manage to get the lanes reopened, they have only pulled this trailer over to the shoulder and the big job of unloading it before it can be righted is still under way. i spoke with the chp just moments ago. they expect to have it cleared up in a couple of hours. and guys, here's the good news. because it's now at the "a" street on-ramp and no longer on the freeway, when they do have to right this truck, they will not have to shut down any more lanes of 880. but it will still be a visual hazard for a few more hours. >> thank you, george. campaign 2016, hillary clinton will bring her fundraising tour to the bay area today. the fundraiser is being held at a san francisco home of a

after another quake hit the same region killing nine people. today's magnitude 7.1 quake shook the kumamoto reasonable at 1:25 a.m. -- region at 1:25 a.m. japan time. the country issued a tsunami advisory for coastal areas. meanwhile, rescue teams are searching for anyone who may still be trapped under rubble after the earlier quake. cbs reporter lucy kraft is in tokyo where overnight workers zaid a baby from a collapsed home. >> reporter: you can see the panic on the faces of these workers at a tv station in kumamoto, the moment the earthquake struck. the violent shaking sending them stumbling across their newsroom as they searched for protection from the falling debris. the deadly magnitude 6.5 quake hit the japanese island of kyushu just before 9:30 p.m. thursday night. there had been more than 100 aftershocks. some almost as strong as the

initial quake. those tremors are slowing down rescue efforts. but teams were able to save this 8-month-old baby from a collapsed home. it took 6 hours to reach the baby, who was reportedly reunited with her parents. [ applause ] >> reporter: however, it is unclear how many more people could still be trapped under debris. hundreds have been forced from homes that are either destroyed or too unstable to stay in. as many as 44,000 people were seeking shelter. japan's meteorological agency says additional tremors could last for another week. lucy craft, cbs news, tokyo. today some of the top experts in driverless cars are in sillicon valley, their focus to get the technology under control before it is making it mainstream. kiet do reports from san jose. >> reporter: some of the part isest people in the world in the relk of self-driving cars will be meeting in san jose to talk about how to plan for technology that is set to go

prime time in less than five years. thigh urban think tank known as spur will be holding a public meeting to brainstorm answers to big questions and get in front of what promises to be a major revolution in society. how will driver legs cars intergrape and shape our these? will it lead to more traffic? will we needless parking? what happenses to public transportation? everything from audi to volkswagen nearly every major car manufacturing has launched and autonomous car research team in the bay area with google the biggest player. after 1.5 million test miles driven a google self-driving car had an accident in mountain view in february when the computer was pulling into a lane and a city bus came up from behind and hit it. the industry now bracing for what when a self-driving car causes a crash that results in injuries or death. the dmv is still working out the laws. today's discussion is entitled, preparing for driverless cars. it is sponsored by microsoft.

memory becca kaplan is lobbying the nba to move next season's all star game to oracle arena. it's currently scheduled for charlotte but there's backlash against north carolina over a new law that critics say discriminates. the nba board of governors is meeting in new york to address the controversy. for now, though, oakland has something even bigger going on, the warriors ain the nba play-offs. just in time for tomorrow's first round series opener against the houston rockets, special warriors post-season t- shirts. some have "strength in numbers" and the letter m is designed as a tally mark. >> when you're a kid, when you want to start to keep track of things you have chalk and you're thinking use tally marks to show like thinks that you won and we wanted to take this concept of numbers and extend that out to our fans. >> the shirts are available in the warriors store at the

ceremo today marks three years since the deadly boston marathon bombings. an emotional ceremony this morning as the mayor and the family of one of the victims placed a wreath at the second blast site on boylston street. the 120th boston marathon is monday. 500,000 people are expected to cheer on the 30,000 runners who will race on patriots day. microsoft says its customers should know when the feds are spying on them so the tech giant is now suing the government. microsoft says that the government often requests access to users' information including emails, photos and financial records and it wants to let those customers know when it's happening. the department of justice is reviewing the lawsuit. taking a live look from wall street right now as we close out the week, the dow is

down 22 points. new at noon, the amc movie theater chain is making it clear text messaging will not be allowed in its theaters while films are showing. the ceo told variety magazine earlier this week he was considering allowing texting in some of the theaters. it was meant to attract more young adults. but today he said that idea will be on the cutting room floor. some movie-goers were outraged about the initial plan. >> people act like these are their lifeline. can you not do without it for two hours? that's so ridiculous. >> i personally go to the movies to watch the movie. if i'm going to text, i would be at home. >> many movie-goers say the lights from cell phones are distracting in dark theaters. imax is using its giant screens to get in on the fitness industry. imax built its $1.7 billion empire by supersizing the movie going experience. now something called imax shift combines indoor cycling with a wall-to-wall screen and pulsating sound. it's only being tested in new

it fairly high. the pressure builds, the numbers come up, as well. in fact, even in the futurecast the skies are completely transparent. there's actually a time lapse from this morning from noon through tonight through tomorrow morning. there's no clouds, there's no low clouds, there's nothing! it just looks like clear skies, cool nights and very warm days in the offing. so it should be a beautiful sunset. sunset tonight at 7:46 p.m. sunrise tomorrow at 6:32 a.m. and it will be a beautiful start to what promises to be a very nice weekend. it's been below average all week for highs. today we finally bump a little bit above average with 67 in the city. 71 at concord. 71 in san jose. 72 for oakland. so we'll get even farther above average for saturday and sunday and this high builds in and the high temperatures continue to climb. 70 today at mountain view. 71 cupertino. along the shoreline, numbers will be in the low 60s. east bay numbers will be nice with temperatures in the 680

corridor in the 60s for the most part. 58 for san ramon. 69 for livermore. 69 at pleasanton. a little warmer for pittsburg and antioch and brentwood. the numbers will be in the low 70s. fairfield at 72. up in the north bay with sunshine today, the numbers will be near 70 at petaluma, san rafael and kentfield. novato 72. sonoma 72 degrees, as well. chillier by the beach. but we'll have nice beach weather as we head into the weekend. for ukiah and clearlake and cloverdale and saint helena the numbers today will be in the mid-70s. and again plenty of sunshine all the way into next week. the extended forecast, you can see sunny skies today and look at the numbers warm on saturday into the upper 70s. sunday, we'll be into the mid- 80s inland. at the beach we'll be in the mid-70s. and as we head into next week, nothing but sunny and dry as far as the eye can see so make your plans now after that rainy weekend last weekend. make up for it tomorrow and

on the bay bridge. he is still in foster care but animal care and control says today they are now expecting adoption applications. and these are his latest pictures. last week the chihuahua made a mess of traffic on the bridge as officers worked to rescue him and his owner never showed up. so he needs a home. they are cute but it's a lot of work to care for a dog. there's plenty of homework to do beforehand. our pet expert dr. jill chase is here with tito to explain. >> he is akita. >> beautiful dog. >> yeah. >> okay. so what do we need to know? >> so in terms of adopting a dog, we are going to talk about dogs today specifically. it has to do with your lifestyle. if you have children in the house, you want a dog that's going to be family-friendly and good with kids. you have to ask yourself, are you the type of person that wants to be able to go running with your dog or is this more of a dog that goes for nice slow walks? let's see what else. >> environment? >> yeah. environment is very important in terms of do you have a house that has a yard or do you have

an apartment? because some dogs are much more -- need to have that yard to move around with where other dogs need an apartment, are okay to live in an apartment. a small dog can run around in an apartment the same as a large dog in a yard. >> some dogs don't like to be left alone. >> personality. i always tell my owners, you have to pick a dog that matches the personality that you like in a dog. so if you like a cute fluffy dog then go for one. if you want a big dog, this is going to be aing about dog, this would be the type -- if you want a big dog, this would be the type to get. there's a huge financial responsibility when a doesn't a dog. you need to be able to manage that. >> i know you told us this before but sometimes people just get so wrapped up in i want the dog, it's so cute, but you have to do your research. >> you do. animals need a lot of veterinary care when they are puppies and maintenance every year thereafter and when they are old there's a lot of care and at home there's the whole food thing and beds and leashes and training and all that. >> a lot to consider.
