are using bulldozers and ev now 24 hours after struck with a massive 7.8 quake, rescuers are using bulldozers and even their hands to dig out earthquake survivors trapped in the rubble in ecuador. good evening, i'm brian hackney. >> and i'm juliette goodrich. more than 200 people are dead after the huge earthquake rocked parts of ecuador. it struck yesterday near the central coast of that country. and cbs reporter craig boswell shows us rescuers are struggling to reach those trapped underneath mountains of concrete. >> reporter: video from inside a store captured the moment a magnitude 7.8 earthquake hit about 100 miles from quito, the capital of ecuador.

shoppers screamed as items were thrown to the ground. officials say more than 230 people were killed and the death toll could rise. rescue crews are struggling to reach people trapped under piles of debris. but a glimmer of hope. applause erupted when a young boy was pulled from the rubble alive. officials say it's the strongest quake to hit ecuador in decades and the destruction is widespread. entire neighborhoods made from cheaply constructed brick and concrete were leveled. buildings crumbled on top of cars. an overpass in the largest city buckled, hampering rescue efforts. over 100 aftershocks have been felt since, causing panic. people slept in the street, many towns remain in the dark and there's concern about looting. the ecuadorean government has deployed nearly 15,000 armed forces and emergency workers to keep the peace and search for survivors. craig boswell, cbs news, washington.

>> more than 1500 people were injured. the president of ecuador has declared a national emergency. at the same time in southern japan the search continues for people missing after two powerful earthquakes there. rescuers spent the weekend pulling more survivors from flattened buildings. the quake killed 41 people and wounded hundreds. san francisco mayor ed lee expresses his condolences to those affected. >> we'll be there to open up our website and ask people to donate in complement with the international red cross and to make sure we do everything we can to help. >> mayor lee released a statement extending thoughts and prayers to earthquake victims in ecuador. >> now on the anniversary of our own magnitude 7.8 quake that burned the city in 1906, it was time today to practice for the next big one. john ramos shows us how it went. >> reporter: for a lot of people at san francisco's marina green, the day started out as a

complete disaster. >> thank you for coming to the drill today. >> reporter: welcome to nert training day. the citywide neighborhood emergency response team program was created after the 1989 loma prieta earthquake when residents pitched in to help their stricken neighborhood. >> it became a little chaotic, actually. we said we've got the people willing to do it. now we just need to organize them, educate them. >> reporter: much of today's education happened at nearby marina middle school where volunteers became victims in the special effects room and then waited in classrooms for nert search and rescue teams to find them. upon entering, team members had to assess danger, closing a gas line and shutting off power. once safe, they used techniques for lifting and bracing heavy objects to free and evacuate an injured victim. back at the command center, a new innovation. command staff monitoring twitter feeds from both rescue teams and

the general public to better focus its resources. >> if you imagine 1989 today, you can kind of guess that the worst damage in the city is going to rise to the top fastest. >> reporter: the most predictable thing about a disaster is that no one can predict exactly what will happen but a lot of lessons were learned after loma prieta and perhaps the most important one was this. >> i don't know what they're doing. i think we know what we're doing now. hopefully we can be helpful to others. >> reporter: in san francisco, john ramos, kpix 5. >> of course it is helpful to remember the 1989 quake was 50 miles south of san francisco when the hayward or rogers creek vault snaps, which could happen at any moment. it will be within a few miles of 3 million people. after a nearly 24-hour search, there's still no sign of the two young boys who were swept out to sea at ocean beach. search crews were out today

tirelessly patrolling. yesterday afternoon five friends locked arms and waded in to the choppy water. a massive wave crashed down and broke their chain. three of the boys made it back to shore. but the other two did not. >> it's not a swimming beach. ocean beach is a place to enjoy the sand and to go surfing if you have those accounts, but it's really not a place to swim. >> a u.s. coast guard computer model predicts the boys could have been dragged out 6 to 15 miles from shore by now. it was a busy day nevertheless at the beaches down in santa cruz. with video of the crowds taking advantage of the warm weather and fun activities like volleyball, building sand castles, apparently surfing, and beating the heat. wasn't a bad day at the beach in san francisco either today. in fact folks are still out there. as we look live at ocean beach, hazard advisory still up for strong rip currents. since temps are up as well, lots of folks are headed to the shore today. still in the 70s by the coast, as well as the low 80s as we

head toward 6:00. highs, concord hit 83 today. one station in oakland reached 89. san jose was in the mid 80s but despite the heat, there's rain on the way. we'll have details when we cover the forecast in a few minutes. developing now in alameda, two people recovering after a shooting at a gas station. it happened last night around 11:00 at the arco on park street. police made one arrest. it's still unclear what exactly led to the shooting. the store manager says shots were fired as the victims asked the person to leave the station. incredible video from los angeles. take a look at the huge fire burning more than a dozen vehicles at a recycling yard in the sun valley area. that's a little bit off of the burbank airport off i-5. you see the flames, thick black smoke billowing in to the sky. there are no reports of injuries. firefighters haven't said what started this fire. a bill to crackdown on the distribution of the deadly drug fentanyl will likely come down to dollars and cents. as anne makovec reports, the new

proposal to save lives faces a challenging future. >> reporter: the drug fentanyl has already killed at least 10 people in the sacramento area this year. many thinking they're taking the pain killer norcos, but many pills on the street are laced with fentanyl, 100 times stronger than heroin. >> you can have what's called a hot pill. one pill might have a grain or two more of fentanyl and that could cause serious injury. >> reporter: the pills are being sold illegally to people like mindy. >> i had been prescribed norcos for a good year or too. it was a large percentage of people who started using from a medical condition. >> reporter: leading otherwise up standing citizens to turn to the black market when their prescription runs out. a new bill would add three to 25 years to the prison sentences of fentanyl dealers. >> we want to be able to add those penalties to get it off the streets because it's become

nationwide such a horrible thing. >> reporter: san mateo county district attorney steve wagstaffe spoke about the bill sunday morning. >> it brings fentanyl in with heroin and cocaine as the worst drugs that we're dealing with for addiction. >> monday's hearing is going to be in front of the senate appropriations committee. even the bill's author says it's going to be the tricky part. >> reporter: the more jail time criminals face for breaking the law, the more money it takes to keep them there. >> i think that's going to be the issue the legislature will wrestle with. from our side under prosecutors, we like it. >> reporter: in the meantime, mindy volunteers with a drug counseling program where phone calls from opiate addicts have doubled. anne makovec, kpix 5. one of the nation's top doctors has a new message for women concerned about getting pregnant because of the zika virus. hear his advice. >> they're right to protest.

new york's primary... and cording to the c-n following campaign 2016, we're two days away from new york's primary. according to the cnn battleground tracker, the forecast is looking good for the frontrunners donald trump and hillary clinton. >> reporter: campaigning in staten island, donald trump continued his attack on the gop presidential nomination process. >> it's a corrupt system. and it's a rigged system. >> reporter: john kasich said on cnn's state of the union, the rules are the rules. >> do you think the system is rigged? >> no, i think it's the way it works. >> reporter: a new cbs battleground tracker poll shows trump with a wide lead over kasich and senator ted cruz in tuesday's new york primary. bernie sanders supporters came out in force to hear him speak in brooklyn's prospect park. democratic rival hillary clinton still holds a 10-point lead in new york. sanders attacked clinton for not supporting a national $15 minimum wage. >> she believes we should raise

the minimum wage to $12. not bad, but not good enough. >> reporter: clinton said she agrees the wage needs to be higher. >> we're having a vigorous back and forth about raising the minimum wage which we both support and the republicans don't want to do that at all. >> reporter: the poll also shows clinton still trails sanders on measures like being seen as authentic and understanding people. $350 would have gotten you an audience with george clooney in san francisco. that was the price of admission for couples to his fundraisers for hillary clinton. he took flack from protesters for it and on meet the press, the oscar winner said today while he favors clinton for the white house, he'll support any democratic that will get there. >> i like bernie. i think what he's saying in this election is important. i hope he stays in for the entire election. and if he were to win the

boston marathon and security will be incredibly tight. thousands of uniformed officers will join the national guard, state police, and federal agents to secure the marathon route. 30,000 people are expected to run the 26-mile course with 1 million spectators along the way. backpacks have been banned and so have been drones. it's been three years since the boston marathon bombings killed three people and left hundreds more injured. some relief today for pregnant women concerned about the zika virus. top official from the national institutes of health says there's been no local transmission of the virus in the u.s. but says that could change this summer when mosquito season gets in to full swing. officials continue to urge pregnant women to steer clear of countries where there are outbreaks. a rare early edition tesla is hitting the auction floor. according to the vehicle identification number, this red sedan was the ninth model s to ever leave the assembly line. that means it got the one-over

beachhead advisories in effect for sneaker wave threats and strong rip current. we've got load pressure that's abeam central california but mostly deflect today the north by the high that's directly over the central coast now. we get one more warm day and then as we look ahead, low pressure sets itself up on the northwest. next chance for rain in the bay area, thursday night and friday. aside from that, here's tomorrow. there's still not a puff of low clouds to come along to give us any kind of relief from our usual air conditioner in the pacific. it's still going to be warm tomorrow. probably not as warm because the high pressure will begin to ease up a bit. it's 90 in the great valley. 90 in sacramento and fresno. up in the mountains, nice time to go to tahoe or yosemite. a few high clouds. overnight lows tonight in the bay area will be down in to a fairly balmy 50-degree range. sun up tomorrow morning, you can set your watch. 6:30 a.m.

for tomorrow numbers are still above average. san francisco, 78. concord, 86. san jose, 85. and oakland, 83. you see these numbers are pretty close to what we had today. in some cases, 16 degrees above the average readings. down in the south bay, mid 80s will do it. at the shoreline, numbers still range from 70 at half moon bay to 82 in pacifica. in the east bay, 80s. in most places, look at antioch and brentwood, up to 90 degrees tomorrow. 87 at pleasant hill. walnut creek, 87. up in the north bay, we'll be looking at 70s and 80s unless you head over the shoreline and hit 73 at bodega bay. 77 for stinson beach. and santa rosa, home of alfred hitchcock shadow of a doubt will be in the 80s. 86 at ukiah. extended forecast, we'll be looking for a warm day tomorrow. tuesday we'll begin to cool down. wednesday, partly cloudy skies. thursday, partly cloudy. the numbers start to go down in to the 60s and rain begins to
