trip around the world. good evening, i'm juliette waiting at the historic solar airplane landing about to arrive at moffett field as part of the full -- trip around the world. good evening, juliette goodrich pierce >> and i'm brian hackney. the solar impulse 2 has put on quite a show flying over san francisco this afternoon and is close to landing in mountain view. right now crews are on the ground at moffett field getting ready for the arrival, preparing an inflatable hangar. the big problem tonight, the wind part at the moment, pilots are on the ground monitoring the wind. the wind is out of the northwest at 7 miles per hour,

that's where the landing has been delayed since the plane appeared over the golden gate this afternoon. you are looking at life feet out of the cockpit and also from the ground as crews are awaiting the landing of the solar impulse 2, after a two day, 26 my hundred mile trip from hawaii. -- to be 600 mile trip from hawaii. it could land anywhere from now until 6 o'clock in the morning. hundreds are learning the strip at moffett field, maria medina has more on why this is significant. >> reporter: it is a historic site many got to witness from the ground in san francisco today, as the pilot circled the bay area and flew right next to the golden gate bridge, leaving many in awe pierce >> it is true that solar impulse is an adventure to share with the public. because, we hope it does not go bad. >> reporter: for the last three days, he has flown in the solar

plane taking off from hawaii and landing in mountain view, where the solar impulse team and a crowd of media will be waiting for him to land. they are trying to find world is the only clean technology. his 9:00 p.m. delayed while he waited for air traffic and wind to die down. but while he waited, why not put on a show for those on the ground? >> we need to show that the adventure is possible for everybody, and that we have to look for whether we look differently, behave differently, and it is to inspire people. >> reporter: at moffett field, maria medina, kpix5. >> plenty of people spotted the airplane from the ground, snap photos and posted them to social media. here you can see the solar impulse from the golden gate bridge and here's the lifestream being continuously fed to folks on earth. you can see the crews at

moffett field, this is their life feet come on board occasionally. we get a glimpse of the pilot, piccard and his partner never getting more than eight the minute nap, at the moment, drama over the skies implying that at any minute they could land the airplane between now and 1:00 in the morning depending on the winds. following other news tonight, a kidnapping foils, a suspect in custody following a chase through the east bay. it started in north richmond this afternoon, contra costa deputies try to stop a toyota previous. then they learned the owner was wanted for kidnapping and domestic violence. a female in the car kept waving her arms out the window. police are calling her a kidnapping victim. the suspect ditched the car on san pablo avenue. in albany, and a police dog

caught him. within the past half hour, a fire that produced a black plume of smoke was put out in gilroy. the three alarm fire broke out around 4:00 this afternoon and the electronics recycling center on angle way. investigators believe it started behind the plant but are not sure how. nearby businesses had to shelter in place until 8:30. the hazmat team found nothing harmful leaked and no one was hurt. competing plans on the table in oakland to address the high cost of rent. open as the fourth most expensive rental market in the country and activists are posting a responsible ballot initiative. under it, landlords could hike reddened by no more than 5% after renovations and would have to get permission from the brenda ford. >> we need something on the ballot to guarantee fair rate increases. >> only half of the units in oakland are covered by rent control, that is because the state restricts us. i think there are other ways we can strict in -- tenant laws.

>> reporter: the mayor wants to protect her plan to protect 17,000 existing units and build another 17,000 new apartments. funding would also come from city fees and no taxes on alameda county homeowners. not your typical protest in san francisco, bay area dog owners marched through the streets against a plan that would significantly cut back areas the dogs can run free. we were there and spoke to many dog owners who say their options are already limited. >> people have been walking their dogs in this area, you know, the last 70-100 years. >> reporter: with a sign in one hand and alisha the other, hundreds marched with their pups at san francisco's crissy field. at mighty mutt march, another effort by bay area dog owners to get the national park service's attention and urge them to scrap a proposal to cut down dog access. >> they don't understand and ought to be someplace else and let the state parks or somebody

run it. >> reporter: in february, there were limits on dog walking and the golden gate national recreation area. >> we feel like we should share because we are occupying less than 1%, so the 99% of the areas the dogs are not allowed. >> reporter: the national park service says changes take into account competing park entrance, protective wildlife and make parks safer. but supporters say the changes hurt more than help. >> they are wrong on this issue in these dramatic restrictions and reductions in dog access is going to have a profound impact. >> reporter: changes with that 90% of off leash areas and about half of off leash areas. >> if you go backwards, it seems like why would you want to live in someplace that does not allow dogs? >> reporter: the national park service in golden gate national recreation area did not request

car were not injured. a stolen gun got this guy under arrest in fairfield. detectives arrested 19-year-old jayro magana during a traffic stop. they found a reportedly stolen gun in his pocket. a man shot and wounded two police officers at walmart in phoenix before being killed. it happened in chandler, arizona. the walmart employee recognized him as a previous trespasser and called police. officers approached the 24-year- old man and he shot both officers. the second officer returned fire, killing him. both officers were wearing bulletproof vests and are in stable condition. a $25,000 reward is being offered to find the killer of an ohio family. seven adults and a 16-year-old boy were shot execution style in rural pike county yesterday. at least three young children survived. the shooter is believed to be armed and dangerous, and police have warned others from the

family to stay on guard and neighbors to keep their doors locked. the death toll from last weeks or court -- earthquake in ecuador keeps rising, officials say more than 650 people are confirmed dead and nearly 60 others are missing. ecuador's president says the earthquake caused billions of dollars in damage, more than 25,000 people out of the home tonight. the magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck last saturday afternoon. turning to campaign 2016, presidential candidates are fighting for a vote before people in five northeastern states had to the polls tuesday. donald trump was in bridgeport, connecticut today where he suggested democrat hillary clinton tends to poor people. clinton was also in connecticut, talking to working families in new haven. >> it's going to take everybody working to turn that around and to get back to where we are

gets closer to landing... t sun- powered plane is two...fueled only by photovoltaic cells---the por of the sun---now has its sights on moffett f in mountain view. at this h we are keeping an eye on moffett field as the solar impulse gets closer to landing. more than two days of continual slide out from hawaii, fueled only by photovoltaic cells, the power of sunshine, now has its sights set on moffett field in mountain view. at this hour it has been circling the bay area since it arrived over the golden gate bridge, waiting for the winds to die down and they have done just that. at 10:00, winds out of the west at 7 miles an hour in mountain view, now 3 miles an hour, it would seem as if conditions are set for the airplane to land. finally, after the pilots on board have been getting updates as they fly across the longest leg of their jersey -- journey, preparing the airplane to land

at moffett field and when it does, we were bring into life. it could happen any time. meanwhile in other news, a car in flames on the highway, the driver says he heard a pop, the car stalled and he found fire under the hood. he rushed to escape but not before grabbing a price painting. he was on his way to an art show in boston. he did not made it their publicly made it out alive. the fire was so intense, the pavement needed repairs. by this time of year a lot of people have packed away their skis for the season, but in the sierra, they are getting in a few extra runs. kpix'5s emily turner headed to the mountains where resorts are staying open even longer. >> reporter: it looks like january on top of the mountain, thanks to 20 inches of snow last night and a redeeming year of weather in the sierra. for the first time in 10 years, many resorts like squaw are staying open. squaw is staying open until memorial day this year.

>> we are really celebrating this year. it has been fantastic. >> reporter: white weather has allowed ski resorts to recoup a little green from the three previous years of subpar snowballs and shortened seasons. >> it has been phenomenal and a great way for people to reconnect with natural snowfall. >> reporter: skiers are excited about it, too. >> oh, yeah, it's amazing. i don't get to come up very often, actually. i question whether i was going to come up this weekend. and i am so, so happy i did. >> reporter: this year's snowfall is about average for squaw valley and possibly more with coming storms. while the drought is far from over, it's doing wonders for the snow season. >> we've got a whole another -- a whole other month of skiing to do, this is storm process in a good position for the rest of the season. >> i did not know how long the

season would be, have not been paying that much attention. my friends wanted to come up. i knew it was going to be excellent and i'm going to keep coming up that i know the snow is like this. >> reporter: in squaw valley, emily turner, kpix5. >> emily said it took her about three hours, that being part from the course from the central bay area. around the bay area tonight, winds picking up much of the day, settling now as we take a look at the golden gate bridge, not many people heading into the city. in oakland, 580, livermore, 54, same for san jose and santa rosa, 55 degrees. low-pressure kicked out of the bay area moving out of utah into parts of colorado and wyoming. low-pressure in the gulf of alaska and high-pressure out of the eastern pacific. and the battle between high and low means it's going to be windy tomorrow, winds gusting up to 34 miles per hour on the shoreline. future cast shows class on the shoreline from santa rosa to san jose. the only clear conditions are out of livermore. by 3:00 in the afternoon, look at the right-hand part of your screen, that green little bob.
