scene? >> let me set the scene for you. right behind me, that's 3rd street and evans. right here in this next intersection, that's where it all happened. you can see that mangled up front of an sfpd suv. right over there to the left we see a white car. it somehow jumped up on the sidewalk and the police officers we were talking to the driver of that car. we're trying to piece together what very little information we have here but what we're told by sfpd spokesman is there were two police officers in that suv. they were coming down phelps street when all of the sudden a car either ran a red light or a stop sign and smashed right in to the front of their vehicle. both of those police officers taken to san francisco general hospital. we're told their injuries are not life-threatening, that's absolutely good news at this point. as you can see, a pretty hard hit to the front of the car. police officers still on the scene. we're told they're still speaking with the driver of the other car that was involved.

on a brave face. >> we were just like oh, i hope he's not going to be down for the count. >> reporter: when curry re-emerges for the 3rd quarter, he tries to warm it up but something is not right. he talks to his coaches and limps back to the locker room. >> when he's out the game, we have the strongest teammate, but you're still worries. we've got a lot of playoff games to go. >> reporter: he didn't come back in to the game. sprained right knee. tomorrow the medical staff will perform an mri and take a closer look. for houston fans, it's a glimmer of hope. >> at that moment in my head i'm like, okay, maybe we have a chance. i don't wish any kind of injury on him but maybe we have a chance to do something. >> you don't wish any moment but if you did, maybe that would be the moment. >> if i did, maybe it would be that moment because it didn't look like career ending. >> reporter: for w nation, legitimate concern on if curry could miss more of the playoffs. >> you don't think they can come back >> i think when he's not

for the game. the warriors beast without steph curry. he's a product of the system and all the great players they have. victor romero commented on our kpix 5 facebook page saying gave us quite a fight in the first half. great win for our ws. congrats to the rockets as well. curry out didn't hurt our lads one bit. as for the game itself, there's plenty more to talk about. dennis o'donnell will have highlights and reaction just ahead. other big story across the bay area tonight, the wind. the powerful northwesterly across the bay area right now. here's a live look at ocean beach where the high winds are kicking up some serious surf at this hour. wind advisories are up through midnight tonight for strong northwesterlys, most in the 20 to 30-mile-per-hour range. we could and have gotten more than 50-mile-per-hour gusts. so far point reyes gusts up to 70 -- up to 47 miles per hour.

after the wind and the rain, it's headed our way. we'll have details in the forecast. unclear if the winds had anything to do with this scene off the san mateo county coast. the coast guard had to haul in a boat that ran in to trouble off coyote point. conditions are looking pretty rough out there. and not clear yet exactly what went wrong or whether anybody was hurt. still windy but slightly less treacherous out on the bay today where dozens of sailboats celebrated opening day on the bay. it's one of the most popular sailing days of the year. though you'd need some serious skills to manage it today. >> blowing really, really hard, so it would be a really rugged day for sailing. we compete all the time and this would be the high end in what we'd race in. >> it celebrates the maritime routes and includes party, a boat parade, and a blessing of the fleet. like you just saw, it's rough out there. tonight a 25-year-old man is recovering after getting caught up in a rip current off ocean

beach. it happened not far from the spot where two vallejo teens were swept out to sea last weekend. there's been no sign of them since. the san francisco fire department has been tweeting out surf warnings like these to beach-goers all weekend. most recently, this advice. be alert and safe at our beechss. do not turn your back on waves and do not wade, swim, surf, or enter water alone. other news tonight, a driver running a red light is what police say may have caused a violent crash in san francisco this afternoon. happened about 1:00 near union square. one car broad sided the other. both ended up on the sidewalk. witnesses told police what they saw. >> a black vehicle in to the building was actually going northbound on taylor. it may have ran a red light. and the silver car was going westbound on sutter on a green light according to witnesses and they collided. >> four people went to the hospital to get checked out. police say none of the injuries

was life-threatening. a man a facing charges of drunk driving when he hit and killed a pedestrian about 10:30 last night in san carlos in front of arendal elementary school. police say the driver of a ford f150 pickup drifted on to the shoulder and struck the pedestrian. he died at the scene. the pickup was spotted at a safeway in nearby belmont. that's where police arrested 51-year-old randall rebing and charged him with felony hit and run, dui and vehicular manslaughter. a stolen gun landed this guy behind bars in fairfield. officers arrested 19-year-old jairo mangana during a traffic stop. after investigators say they found this loaded handgun in his jacket pocket. the weapon had been reported stolen out of arizona. smoke filled the sky in venetia this afternoon as firefighters battled a three-alarm fire on 1st street. crews work to secure the roof of a spa.

no reports of any injuries. and no word on the cause. the sun powered solar impulse 2 made a historic landing in the bay area last night. one of a kind plane floated in to moffat field just before midnight. 17,000 photovoltaic cells charge it. travels more than two days taking off from hawaii on thursday. piccard and another pilot are attempting to circumnavigate the world all in an effort to promote clean energy. when he landed, piccard told us why he loves exploring. >> it's a world where you have keen technologies and you respect the environment and you go with nature. it's a world where you go in to the unknown, where you have to stimulate your creativity to find new solutions. it's a world where human beings can really express themselves. that's why i always dreamt of being an explorer and i love that world. >> last night's landing

the techie takeover in san francisco... to oaklan the bay area has seen its fair share of changes from the techy takeover in san francisco to oakland's recent revival. now another east bay city is trying to blend the old with the new. kpix 5's john ramos shows us where the hipsters could be headed next. >> reporter: like a lot of communities, martinez would love to have more activity in its downtown. >> some sort of an afterhours

life so that the sidewalks don't roll up when the court closes. >> reporter: but this old town may have been shaken awake when owners of its old brick buildings were given a deadline to retrofit to seismic standards or be shut down. >> a lot of them are doing restoration projects rather than tearing it down and starting new. >> reporter: so today a group of young entrepreneurs looking for work space got a tour of a downtown that is suddenly becoming cool, because of its supply of vacant vintage chic commercial buildings. artists and restauranteurs are drawn to the exposed brick and beams. >> i like the historic value of the buildings and the rawness of it. >> and some of the remodels even offer lost departments above the retail, which appeals to millennials who want to live close to their favorite hangout. >> like how the people in friends, how they met at that one cafe every day. it's like that. they want that. >> reporter: state's coffee offers a custom brew and art

euphoria holds wine and painting parties. with all the space available, there's a belief here that martinez could become a thriving arts colony without driving away those who are already here. >> martinez is different because there's a character and a sense of pride and community and authenticity that lives here that can blend with the new. >> reporter: whether this old town will ever develop in to a mecca for hipsters is hard to predict. that usually happens by accident. not design. but as they say, it certainly has good bones for it. in martinez, john ramos, kpix 5. the earthquake retrofit deadline was required by federal law. buildings that did not comply could be red tagged or demolished at the owner's expense. nine california sea lions are back home in the pacific after being nursed back to help at seaworld. the animals were malnourished and dehydrated when they washed ashore in san diego a few months

ago. by the time they were released on earth day, they were saying get me out of here. fattened up and ready to go home. in the l.a. county foothills, to continue this wild kingdom theme, police were called out to deal with a bear up a tree. this in the city of duarte. the bear came out on its own and wandered amongst parked cars. animal control officers tranquilized it and hauled it off in a truck. the bear will be checked out before being released back in to the wild. hopefully a little bit farther from all those homes. in about a month, california's fire season will be in full swing. reporter lemor abrams shows us officials are racing to get rid of the dry trees that can act as fuel for wildfires. >> reporter: in 2013 the rim fire burned tens of thousands of acres in the stanislaus national forest. it was just the start of california's devastating drought, back when the u.s. forest service estimated 3

million trees died off. fast forward a few years. numbers show the combination of record dry weather and destructive bark beetles have killed off 29 million trees across california. that's almost 10 times the tree fuel still left to burn. >> it's sad. it's just sad. >> reporter: in auburn, recent rains have made way for lush green hillsides. but look closely. you'll find pockets of brown trees. just compare it with this rusty view in fresno county. cal fire says the tree die-off continues to move north. >> further in to amador county, el dorado county and placer counties. we'll continue to work with those counties to start moving resources here as well to make sure we can provide those that help with the homeowner. >> reporter: the spokesman says it's a race against time to get to the trees before they become more dangerous. >> this is not just a fire threat. this is a public safety threat on a very large scale. >> cal trans crews have been aggressively removing these dead trees and clearing them from the

road but there are thousands more all around us. >> we have ponderosa pines. we have douglas firs. and some of them grow rather large. >> reporter: still park ranger scott let - scott lisky says it hasn't stopped people from coming out. >> they have those incredibly large old sequoias. >> reporter: firefighters warn fire season will return too and with the added vegetation, maybe sooner than you think. >> it's in your face now. because you're apart of it. you live it. >> reporter: thousands of fires in california scorched more than 300,000 acres last year alone. >> you notice the winds have picked up around the bay area. they'll be with us as we head in to the evening hours. san francisco has picked up gusts in excess of 50 miles per hour and on the wind advisory that's still posted in the bay area tonight, we're looking in to coastal areas being especially susceptible. that's while you'll notice the

advisory painted in around the bay shoreline and around the coast at the ocean. elsewhere not so bad. you'll see it on the futurecast in a minute. meantime, point reyes, 47-mile-per-hour gust. sfo within the last hour, 54 miles per hour as those winds whistle through the san bruno gap and head right in to the airport. mt. tam, 43 miles per hour. futurecast wind gusts as we trail this in to midnight and through the early morning hours. look at the coastline. see those bright red colors? strong winds. fairfield, napa, concord. closer you are to the shore, we'll be seeing wind gusts even stronger. the golden gate bridge. a few high clouds up top. the numbers right now, mostly in the upper 50s and low 60s. in the city, 57 degrees. santa rosa, 62. here's how it looks tonight. low pressure is powering ashore north of seattle. it will be sunny and windy tomorrow as that low couples with the high offshore and we get strong northwesterly winds. futurecast, this will show us sky conditions now.

mostly clear skies. as we head in to the morning hours, afternoon, monday, looks like a clear day in the bay area for monday. still be brisk, a little bit windy. not as bad as it was today. windy, cool-ish, sunny tomorrow. next rain chance comes in on wednesday. not a big rain maker but we'll get overcast skies and showers. then by the weekend, next weekend the numbers will be in to the 80s, especially on sunday, mid 80s. travel weather forecast heading out of the bay area, down 99 to fresno. it will be 68 degrees. 73 for sacramento. up to redding, 71. eureka and lovely mendocino, 69 degrees. partly cloudy skies. headed to the mountains, still a mix of snow and rain for lake tahoe and for yosemite. overnight lows, if you're venturing out tonight, will range from 42 degrees in santa rosa. livermore, 44. san jose, 47. the sun will come up at 6:20 a.m. tomorrow. forecast highs will be cooler than average. about 3 degrees back of that. combine that with gusty winds and you'll think, a little bit

of a spring bite in the air. temperatures in the mid 60s tomorrow for the south bay and plenty of sun. cooler at the shoreline. 58 for half moon bay. east bay, sunshine. 70 at pittsburg. 70 for antioch. 72 at brentwood. cooler in the 680 corridor. north of san pablo bay at sonoma, 67 degrees. novato, 67. in santa rosa, 65. at ukiah, 68 degrees. extended forecast. sunshine tomorrow. sunshine on tuesday. then showers come in on wednesday. thursday, partly cloudy skies. and friday and saturday and sunday, sunshine and things really do begin to warm up. expect it to get wet on wednesday. windy night tonight and plenty going on in the weather department in the week ahead. not nearly as riveting as sports. here's dennis. >> there's a lot going on. the giants go for a sweep against the marlins. as try to get back on the winning track in toronto. and how the warriors responded without their mvp.
