mediterranean and back to aube dhabi. a woman gets a second chance of a lifesaving transplant and besides that she can save a life giving her heart. now, two women have a unique and special bond. >> most people don't find out who their heart or lung transplant even came from. they don't know anything about the donor. >> 53-year-old linda carr knows. she received 51-year-old tommy griffin's heart. >> it is amazing that i can -- help a person and has my heart. >> reporter: and tammy received the heart and lungs from a diseased 21-year-old donor. tammy had cystic fibrosis, receiving lungs was critical. her heart was still functioning well, but was pushed out of the normal position. along-heart transplant was the only option. and tammy wanted to know if she could give her heart to someone else, literally. >> i said is my heart still go.

they said, yeah. i said why don't i do not it. >> tammy's heart was a miracle match for linda who was diagnosed 20 years ago with a genetic disease. her health was declining. so two women were at the same hospital floor in stanford, receiving organs in a procedure. >> all together. there is probably 30 people involved in these two transplant operations. >> reporter: dr. joseph coordinated the surgical team. one removed the heart and lung from the deceased -- donor and then they implanted them in tammy. and then to linda. >> this is once in a lifetime. >> reporter: both women were not sure of the outcome until the surgery was complete.

>> this is extremely rare. the last one at standard was done 22 years ago. >> and the ideas were confidential, tammy and linda wanted to meet. two months later they met. and even more remarkable. tammy got to hear her heart beating in linda. >> emotional. >> reporter: both women are saying their sheng in -- health is improving daily. they wear masks outside. >> i love to be able to jog or mountain bike. >> reporter: for both women it is one day at a time. >> it is just a miracle. i cannot believe this actually happened. it is just wonderful. just amazing. >> i will be forever grateful. i'm happy it worked out. >> reporter: this is national donate life month. and both women said that they hope others will find it in their hares to be an organize -- hearts to be an organ donor.
