how cruz and john kasich are joining forces, brook. good morning. >> good morning, anne-marie. it's an idea that mitt romney floated almost two months ago. an agreement on the candidates to focus on the states where they have the best chance of beating trump and in those states, at least, get out of each other's way. now officially that idea is being put into action. the effort to stop donald trump took a new turn sunday night. in coordinated statements, ted cruz and john kasich announced plans to team up to beat the gop front-runner in three upcoming primaries. the strategy encourages cruz supporters in oregon and new mexico to back kasich. while kasich asks his supporters in indiana to help cruz. >> we want to nominate a campaign based on yelling and screaming and cursing, or do we want to unite behind a positive, optimistic, forward looking, conservative campaign? >> reporter: trump called the move desperate, saying in a natement, "these two washington

insiders have had to revert to collusion in order to stay alive." he's expected to rack up more wins tuesday including delegate-rich pennsylvania. campaigning in maryland sunday, he pivoted to a general election match-up with hillary clinton. >> i don't know if she'll be easier or harder, but that's the one i want to beat. >> reporter: clinton is eyeing her own victories in four of five states tomorrow, wins that would badly hurt bernie sanders' bid for the nomination. >> i would be humbled to have your vote. >> reporter: the vermont senator is vowing to press. on. >> we are going to continue. we're going to fight this out until the last vote is cast. >> reporter: connecticut, delaware, maryland, pennsylvania, and rhode island have their say tomorrow. all the candidates will hold rallies in pennsylvania today, the big delegate prize tomorrow. all the candidates, that is, except for ted cruz who will be in indiana, a state where as he showed he's neck and neck with trump and kasich isn't active

running. >> thank you. on the democratic side in tomorrow's pennsylvania race, hillary clinton has an eight-point lead over bernie sanders. in indiana, clinton is ahead by five points which is within the poll's eight-point margin of error. president obama is expected to announce this morning that he's deploying as many as 250 more military personnel to syria to help local syrian forces fight isis. that significantly increases the u.s. presence in syria. mr. obama is currently in germany where he is backing a controversial trade deal. margaret brennan is traveling with the president. >> reporter: president obama and german chancellor angela merkel are pushing a controversial trade deal that brought more than 30,000 protester to the -- proif protesters to the streets. they fear it would weaken environmental standards and consumer protections. president obama defended the

there's a major manhunt this morning for the killer or killers of eight family members. seven adults and one teenage boy were shot in the head in four homes in rural southern ohio. law enforcement is advising residents there to arm themselves if they fear for their safety. investigators on sunday said the killings were sophisticated executions. >> this was not something that just happens. this was planned. a family was targeted. most of them targeted while they were sleeping. >> a days' old infant, a six-month-old baby, and a small child were not hurt. police found several marijuana growing operations at the crime scenes. sources tell cbs' station in the dallas-ft. worth area that a grand jury indicted quarterback johnny manziel. the 23-year-old is accused of repeatedly hitting his ex-girlfriend while driving from a dallas bar back to her home in ft. worth in late january.

he's charged with assault with bodily injury, and that is a misdemeanor. and prince's fans mourned and celebrated his life. the life of a pop icon, over the weekend. his family cremated his remains and held a private memorial on saturday. we have more from chanhassen, minnesota. [ bells ] >> reporter: the bells at minneapolis city hall didn't ring. they rocked. ♪ i only want to see you laughing in the purple rain ♪ >> reporter: prince's hometown honored the mega superstar's "purple rain" in the music industry by playing a few of his hits from the bell tower like "kiss" and "1999." outside his paisley park estate, thousands flocked to pay their final respects to prince with purple balloons, flowers, and even a guitar. fans from all over the country still can't believe he's gone. >> i really believe in my life i will never meet and love another

artist like i've loved prince. >> it hit me really hard the first day. i sobbed at the back of work and then came home and sobbed. i'm finally able to kind of compose myself, but it still dntd feel real at all. >> reporter: the tributes continue to pour in, showing how influential the pop icon was across the world. the minnesota wild honored their state's favorite son, putting his famous symbol in the stands and pausing for a moment of silence with his picture on the jumbotron before their hockey game. in uptown minneapolis, a purple-faced mural of prince and a dove commemorated his death. a public musical celebration of his life is being planned. cbs news, chanhassen, minnesota. a wave of tributes to the icon continue. "snl" dedicated the airwaves to prince, unearthing previously unseen footage of an impromptu 2015 performance by the purple one. ♪

round-the-world trip. on the cbs "moneywatch," gas prices floated up, and a battle of childhood classics at the box office. hena daniels has that and more. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, gains by energy and financial companies aided by the rise of oil helped lift stocks last week. the dow jones rose 107 for the week. the s&p 500 finished almost 11 points higher. the nasdaq was the exception, falling nearly 32 points. investors will keep a close eye on a federal reserve meeting this week over interest rates. policymakers gather tuesday and wednesday and are widely expected to keep rates steady. however, the fed might tweak the country's economic outlook to reflect better conditions, opening the door to a rate hike later. just as oil prices continue to climb, so does the cost to fill up your gas tank. the latest lundberg survey found the average cost of a gallon is up eight cents over the past three weeks.

the average in is now $2.18 a gallon. that's up 41 cents over the past nine weeks. the increase is expected to continue as refineries switch to a pricer in -- a pricier summer blend to comply with federal regulations. the faa has ordered airlines to fix certain ge engines on boeing's 787 dreamliner to prevent an icing problem that can cause them to shut down while mid flight. 176 dreamliners belonging to 29 airlines are affected. back in january, one of the two engines on a japanese airline -- japan airline's 787, rather, shut down while in the air and could not be restarted. the plane did land safely. "the jungle book" held on to its top spot in the second weekend in theaters. the live action remake of disney's 1967 animated classic earned nearly another $61 million. that brought its ten-day domestic total to more than $191
