live from the cbs bay area studios, this is kpix 5 news. >> now at 11:00 p.m. a plane powered by the sun about to take off in the dark. good evening. just a few hours from now the solar impulse 2 is expected to be flying over the bay area again. it is taking off in mountain view. kpix 5's maria medina is there with the plane's journey. >> reporter: during our 6:00 p.m. live shot you saw my hair whipping all over the place but the wind has died down in time for their 5:00 a.m. take off. it will take 16 hours to get to phoenix, arizona. saying good-bye is not so easy.

>> tomorrow it will be a good day. the weather man saying good day to fly. >> reporter: in a few hours the solar impulse will take off, but saying good-bye to silicon valley was bittersweet. they visited the bay area a view years ago where the first protoo -- with the first prototype. promising they would return. and they did. he made it 62 hour flight in the plane over the pacific ocean from hawaii. circling the golden gate bridge before landing. turning them into silicon valley celebrities this week. >> we were wonderfully well treated and welcomed. and i think our stay here for one week has been -- [ indiscernible ] >> for several days they watched the weather. the conditions during take off and landing are crucial for the

plane powered by solar paneled. his co-pilot will take the flight to phoenix as they push their message of clean technology. their stop in the bay area is one they will never forget. >> members of the team told me 10 minutes ago i love that city. i love san francisco. >> reporter: all right. that is where solar impulse 2 is sitting before their 5:00 a.m. take off tomorrow. they had the red carpet treatment since they have been here. meeting with several silicon valley execs. they had private meetings. as far as the flight, their journey should end at the end of the summer. maria medina, kpix 5. shooting investigation in san francisco at golden gate avenue in front of the courthouse. a half hour ago two men got into an argument.

they are demanding a meeting with mayor ed lee. >> not just saying like we are going to push to meet with him. we are going to meet with him. >> we told him we are coming. we expect him to be there. >> it will be super tuesday. >> reporter: they have been surprised by the community support. even from some who didn't think they would last a week. >> it is 11. and now we have had people come up to us crying. this is real. >> reporter: in san francisco, joe vazquez, kpix 5. friends and family gathered in livermore today to remember a mother and daughter killed by a drunk driver a year ago. the man left the wine festival. flowers and pictures were put up at a park. they were on a sidewalk when brian jones hit them with his

car. jones had a blood alcohol level almost twice the legal limit. >> drinking and driving and speeding, you kill someone, that is a crash, you killed them. >> police patrolled the wine festival to make sure anyone who had too much didn't get behind the wheel. tomorrow students will hold rallies against possible tuition hike. they are upset about a recommendation that tuition should go up. at san francisco state students will march at noon. they are also protesting cuts that college of ethnics studies. claims that airbnb is playing politics. it donated thousands of dollars into san francisco campaigns. the home sharing site poured $257,000 in to campaigns for

>> reporter: it is been a while since recycling was a way of life in california. back then part of the promise was that saving the planet made economic sense, the time, energy and effort spent collecting this would help pay for itself because someone, somewhere would want to buy all of this. well, when prices were high, that model worked. >> china wanted it. taiwan wanted it. >> for years that was california's recycling secret. a lot of our waste wasn't getting recycled here. it was getting shipped across the pacific ocean. >> because china really is the one that is buying our recyclables. >> reporter: when china's economy went into the dumpster so did the price of oil that is tied to the used water bottles.
