live from the cbs bay area studios, this is kpix 5 news. >> now at 11:00 p.m. a plane powered by the sun about to take off in the dark. good evening. just a few hours from now the solar impulse 2 is expected to be flying over the bay area again. it is taking off in mountain view. kpix 5's maria medina is there with the plane's journey. >> reporter: during our 6:00 p.m. live shot you saw my hair whipping all over the place but the wind has died down in time for their 5:00 a.m. take off. it will take 16 hours to get to phoenix, arizona. saying good-bye is not so easy.

>> tomorrow it will be a good day. the weather man saying good day to fly. >> reporter: in a few hours the solar impulse will take off, but saying good-bye to silicon valley was bittersweet. they visited the bay area a view years ago where the first protoo -- with the first prototype. promising they would return. and they did. he made it 62 hour flight in the plane over the pacific ocean from hawaii. circling the golden gate bridge before landing. turning them into silicon valley celebrities this week. >> we were wonderfully well treated and welcomed. and i think our stay here for one week has been -- [ indiscernible ] >> for several days they watched the weather. the conditions during take off and landing are crucial for the

plane powered by solar paneled. his co-pilot will take the flight to phoenix as they push their message of clean technology. their stop in the bay area is one they will never forget. >> members of the team told me 10 minutes ago i love that city. i love san francisco. >> reporter: all right. that is where solar impulse 2 is sitting before their 5:00 a.m. take off tomorrow. they had the red carpet treatment since they have been here. meeting with several silicon valley execs. they had private meetings. as far as the flight, their journey should end at the end of the summer. maria medina, kpix 5. shooting investigation in san francisco at golden gate avenue in front of the courthouse. a half hour ago two men got into an argument.

[ indiscernible ] >> and in san jose hundreds rallied near city hall this afternoon to demand affordable housing, better wages and respect for indigenous communities. no food for a week. a group upset with san francisco police are pushing forward with their hunger strike. kpix 5's joe vazquez tells us they are not letting up. >> reporter: outside the mission police station the vigil continues. 11 days in. >> hunger strikers demanding justice. >> reporter: upset about police shootings. five men and women are only drinking liquids. a hunger strike to draw attention to their cause. they will march from here to city hall on tuesday.

they are demanding a meeting with mayor ed lee. >> not just saying like we are going to push to meet with him. we are going to meet with him. >> we told him we are coming. we expect him to be there. >> it will be super tuesday. >> reporter: they have been surprised by the community support. even from some who didn't think they would last a week. >> it is 11. and now we have had people come up to us crying. this is real. >> reporter: in san francisco, joe vazquez, kpix 5. friends and family gathered in livermore today to remember a mother and daughter killed by a drunk driver a year ago. the man left the wine festival. flowers and pictures were put up at a park. they were on a sidewalk when brian jones hit them with his

car. jones had a blood alcohol level almost twice the legal limit. >> drinking and driving and speeding, you kill someone, that is a crash, you killed them. >> police patrolled the wine festival to make sure anyone who had too much didn't get behind the wheel. tomorrow students will hold rallies against possible tuition hike. they are upset about a recommendation that tuition should go up. at san francisco state students will march at noon. they are also protesting cuts that college of ethnics studies. claims that airbnb is playing politics. it donated thousands of dollars into san francisco campaigns. the home sharing site poured $257,000 in to campaigns for

moderate democratic candidates and their issues. it comes days after progressives threatened fines and misdemeanor charges for home sharers violating city laws. >> they are swaying the elections. they drop ad$250,000 in a 25,000 -- dropped $25,000 in a -- [ indiscernible ] . city leaders may put a minimum wage hike on the fast track. governor jerry brown signed a bill raising the state's minimum wage to $15 an hour by 2022 but san mateo might decide to phase it in faster or raise it hire. the city council meets tomorrow to get input. no steph curry no problem.

are working it -- cruise in washington, d.c. are working to clean up a scene where a train derailed. one of the cars was leaking sodium hydroxide. >> the leak has been stopped. we are working to figure out the next steps in getting this cleaned up. getting any spill remediated and returning the trial service. >> no one was hurt and officials aren't sure what caused the cars to jump the tracks. clean up is underway in texas after fierce weather. torrential rains are blamed for the deaths of six people. 60 miles north businesses and homes were destroyed when a tornado with winds as high as 115 miles per hour hit friday night. in arkansas funnel cloud was spotted off the mississippi. several counties in the state are under a flood warning.

and louisiana, people in baton rouge had to take cover as hail pelted homes and cars. back in the bay area, recycling industry isn't seeing as much green these days. kpix 5's wilson walker shows us why it is piling up and why it could cost you. >> reporter: >> the parameters changed. newspaper doesn't weight what it used to weigh. >> for 60 years he has been moving trash. >> now we are recycling 75% of what comes in here. >> for many of those years he could do it at a profit but not anymore. >> i want to prevent it from going to a landfill but we can't keep doing it and not make a buck at it.

>> reporter: it is been a while since recycling was a way of life in california. back then part of the promise was that saving the planet made economic sense, the time, energy and effort spent collecting this would help pay for itself because someone, somewhere would want to buy all of this. well, when prices were high, that model worked. >> china wanted it. taiwan wanted it. >> for years that was california's recycling secret. a lot of our waste wasn't getting recycled here. it was getting shipped across the pacific ocean. >> because china really is the one that is buying our recyclables. >> reporter: when china's economy went into the dumpster so did the price of oil that is tied to the used water bottles.

and the first u.s. cruise it cuba in 50 years is sailing away tonight. 700 passengers are on the american ship and they will be the first to dock on the island. it will stop in two ports. someone in san jose will be able to afford a few trips. they won a million dollars playing powerball. a gas station sold a powerball ticket that matches 5-6 numbers and it is now worth $1.3 million. no one hit the jackpot last night so that means the next drawing on wednesday will be worth $350 million. >> we could use that. we will fire up the kpix 5 doppler tonight. a lot of this is really because

s it is game over for one of the biggest sporting good chains. sports authority is closing all stores. filed for chapter 11 in march. the plan was to close 140 stores and reorganization but that didn't fix their problems and now they have to close all stores across the country. including in the bay area. mother's day a week away and businesses are expecting to cash in. americans plan to spend $4.2 billion on jewelry for moms. 4.1 on outings and 2.4 billion on flowers.
