9:45 this morning at meridien avenue and camino monde. kiet do is live to explain what happened reporter: an active scene with fire engines, paramedics, and we are getting a last- minute update with a news conference. you see that blue tent? that's a decontamination station where they have been weeing outpatients one by one all morning long. take a look. 17 people now exposed to the spilled chemical. 12 of them transported to local hospitals. many of them breathe in the fumes but some may have had some skin contact with the chemical when it spilled. it was about 1 ounce of creosote spilled around 9:43 this morning at the indian health center at 1333 meridien at san jose. there was a massive hazmat response. there were no major injuries. >> that's why we had a treatment over there. we had people that smelled it out in the air breathing fresh

air. that's the treatment for that. if they have other symptoms they go to the local hospital. those inside that had some exposure to the chemical, um, we are going to be treating them. we are going to decontaminate them and take them to the hospital. >> reporter: again, we're being told one ounce of creoso le was spilled. no word on the cause of the spill. marine avenue is closed for a couple more hours. live in willow glen, kiet do, kpix 5. the moments leading up to prince's death, the minneapolis startribune reporting that prince's reps called a prominent marin county doctor one day before the music legend died. and they said that the doctor was called to help with a grave medical emergency. kpix 5's anne makovec joins us live from mill valley where the doctor and noted addiction specialist is based. anne.

>> reporter: yeah. this, um, doctor's office is inside this very unassuming brown building in mill valley. this doctor may have been tapped with saving prince's life. but it was too late. this is the website for the practice of dr. howard cornfeld. he was called the night of april 20th but he could be the clear his schedule to see -- he couldn't clear his schedule to see him the next day so he sent his son in the interim. >> andrew's purpose in being there was to describe treatment without walls for his did addiction issues. >> reporter: on the morning of april 21, prince's body was found in an elevator. >> one of the staff members started screaming.

andrew heard the screams and went to the elevator, where he saw that prince was unconscious. >> reporter: and it was andrew who called 911. good morning. are you dr. kornfeld? i spoke briefly with dr. kornfeld this morning. he said he is not able to talk on camera [ overlapping speakers ] >> no drugs were ever administered. there's never any intention of drugs being administered to prince by andrew or by dr. kornfeld. >> reporter: but the attorney says andrew took a backpack with him to prince's home containing a synthetic opiate often used in addiction treatments. the lawyer described the doctor's plan as a, quote, life-saving mission. the doctor had arranged for prince to see a doctor there in minnesota before he started his treatment with dr. kornfeld. live in mill valley, anne makevoc, kpix 5. developing news on the campaign trail. sources say john kasich is out. this afternoon, the ohio governor is expected to

officially suspend his campaign in the race toward the republican presidential nomination. this comes on the heels of ted cruz dropping out of the gop race yesterday. and in effect, clears the field for donald trump to become the party's nominee. cbs reporter craig boswell has the latest from the white house. >> reporter: ted cruz and john kasich have both made the decision to drop out of the presidential race. >> we gave it everything we've got. but the voters chose another path. >> reporter: the moves came after donald trump's overwhelming win in indiana tuesday night. >> i didn't expect this. i didn't expect this. and what ted did is a -- really a very brave thing to do. >> reporter: the reality is now apparent. trump will likely get the majority of gop delegates and become the party's presidential nominee. rnc chairman reince priebus tweeted that trump will be the presumptive nominee and says it's time for the republican party to unite behind its new leader. >> this is what today starts, which is this unification

process. >> reporter: lost in all the drama surrounding the gop race is the fact that bernie sanders pulled off the upset win over hillary clinton in the democratic primary. >> i know all the pundits thought we were supposed to lose, but that apparently was not what the people of indiana concluded. >> reporter: the bad news for sanders is that even after his win, clinton is now 92% of the way towards locking up the nomination. craig boswell, cbs news, the white house. >> bernie sanders is looking ahead to next month's primary here in california. he says he knows that it may not be easy to rally voters, but he has a plan. >> and clearly, we're not going to be spending $100 million or whatever it takes on media in california. so we have to decide the best way to allocate our resources. we're going to go to california and when we go to california, you're going to see very large rallies up and down that beautiful state. >> a new cnn poll out today shows hillary clinton will head into a general election matchup against donald trump with a

54%-41% lead. new at noon, police are investigating a shooting outside a mcdonald's in antioch. it's at somerville road and sycamore avenue. few details at this point, but we're hearing at least one person may have been injured. the circumstances aren't clear at this time. today uc-berkeley police announced a $10,000 reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction in a homicide case. alberto santana silva was shot at the grizzly peak lookout in may of 2013. the victim's sister spoke out today. >> well, this is very hard for me to stand here and remember that day like it was yesterday. all i know is that no matter how much time passes, we're going to stand and try to fight for justice for my brother. >> police also released a sketch of the suspect hoping it will generate more leads in the case. looks like california voters will get to weigh in on whether to legalize pot this

november. a coalition backed by lieutenant governor gavin newsom says it's racked up enough signatures for the measure to qualify. 600,000 to be exact. and it's well ahead of the july 5 deadline. newsom and supporters are launching the official campaign for the "adult use of marijuana act" today in san francisco. among other things it would allow adults 21 and older to possess one ounce of marijuana. meantime, governor brown has until the end of the day to make some big decisions about tobacco. the assembly has sent him six bills restricting tobacco use in california. the most significant would raise the smoking age from 18 to 21. the governor can sign, veto or send the bills back. the japanese auto parts company takata has agreed to a major expansion of its airbag inflater recall. another 35 to 40 million will be called putting the total recall as high as 63 million. they explode with too much force. 11 deaths and more than 100 injuries have been reported

worldwide. >> it's the largest and most complex recall in u.s. history. this issue is urgent. >> the national highway traffic safety administration says it could take until the end of 2019 to replace all the airbag inflaters. a soggy mess on the streets of santa clara county this morning. the fire department tweeted this photo from los altos about an hour and a half ago. they say that a 75-year-old driver hit a power pole and a hydrant on east brook avenue. water and power in the area had to be shut off. we are told that crews have since capped the hydrant and are working to replaced the pole. 88 customers were without power at last check. the gas leak in southern california is going to cost way more than expected. sempra energy said in its earnings report today, costs from the gas leak at porter ranch have gone up to $665 million. that's more than double earlier estimates. it leaked for four months

before being capped in late february. president obama is in flint, michigan right now to look into the city's water contamination crisis. governor rick snyder greeted him on the tarmac this morning after air force one arrived. the president is set to meet with state officials to discuss efforts to resolve the issue there. he will also visit some local students, one of whom an 8-year- old girl who wrote him a letter about the problems facing her community. elsewhere in michigan, in ann arbor the fbi says a man admitted to spraying mice poison on a produce section in at least three grocery stores. the investigation started after a whole foods employee noticed the man spraying the liquid mixture on food and then reported it to police. the store says it immediately closed down the salad and hot food bars and sanitized the areas out of an abundance of caution. >> what if he's been doing it for weeks or months or years and we're just suddenly seeing him? it makes you think about everything you buy all the

shares down 4%, this is the bay area-based automaker's first quarterly report since it revealed its model 3. there are concerns that tesla's supply does not keep up with demand. they missed targets of the suv. this comes as tesla's expanding into livermore just securing leases on two or three giant warehouses there. they will be used to store parts as tesla ramps up production at its fremont plant. sprint just unveiled a sculpture to call attention to the dangers of texting and driving. check it out. it's called the last emoji. it's made from parts of a wrecked car found in a junkyard and it's on display in downtown miami. they chose to put it in florida because it's one of the few states that doesn't prohibit texting and driving as a primary offense a live look now at the big board. still another bad day. the dow is down 104. a 10-year-old boy is

$10,000 richer after uncovering a bug on facebook's instagram platform. the menlo park-based company gave the boy the reward after he reported a flaw that allowed him to delete other people's comments. the boy lives in finland and he told a local newspaper that he plans to spend his money on a bicycle and a soccer ball. just a few hours from now, new airline service will begin between san jose and london. british airways will fly boeing 787 dreamliners between mineta international airport and heathrow airport. this is actually the first time an airline has offered regular service between the two cities. the first flight is set to leave at 8:05 p.m. now for a check of weather, here's roberta gonzales. >> that's some exciting stuff! we don't have any reports of airport delays at this hour. hi, everybody! at this lunchtime, let's go ahead and call on our live hi- def doppler radar. we are picking up some rain showers well to the north of us. we did have a little bit of light precipitation around
