and clerks fight back when a robber climbs over the counter. the beatdown that had the the beatdown that had the suspect sprinting away. captioning funded by cbs good morning from the studio 57 newsroom in new york. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. the race for the republican presidential nomination exposed some very public divisions within the party, but this may be the topper. the party's highest ranking elected official, speaker of the house paul ryan, is refusing to support donald trump. this is a turn around for ryan who has said for months he would support the gop nominee. hannah daniels is here in new york. good morning. >> reporter: presumptive gop nominee donald trump is struggling to build unity within his own party. on thursday, house speaker paul ryan declined to support trump while likely democratic contender hillary clinton focused her efforts on winning california and securing her

party's nomination. donald trump pressed ahead with his campaign thursday, urging supporters in west virginia to save their energy for november. >> save your vote for the general election, okay? forget this one. the primary is gone. >> reporter: despite being the only candidate left standing on the gop side, trump is facing difficulty building support within the party. yesterday house speaker paul ryan became the latest voice refusing to back his candidacy. >> i'm just not ready to do that at this point. i'm not there right now. i think what is necessary to make this work, for this to unify, is to actually take our principles and advance them. >> reporter: trump fired back in a statement saying he's not ready to support speaker ryan's agenda. he saved his sharpest jabs of the night for likely democratic opponent hillary clinton, branding her family foundation a scam. >> i gave money to the foundation. i figured maybe they'll use it properly. i didn't know they'd use it to fly around on private jets. >> reporter: outside a rally in

california, clinton was met by protesters wary of her record. inside, she urged supporters to help her defeat rival bernie sanders and wrap up the democratic nomination. >> we have to turn out a big vote on june the 7th. >> reporter: voters in west virginia and nebraska weigh in next when the states hold primary contests tuesday. rnc chair reince priebus says trump and ryan will possibly meet next week. building party unity is likely to be at the top of the agenda. >> hannah daniels here in new york, thanks a lot. donald trump celebrated cinco de mayo with this tweet. a picture of himself feasting on a taco bowl with the caption, happy cinco de mayo. the best taco bowls are made in trump tower grill. i love hispanics. well, cinco de mayo commemorates a key victory by the mexican army over the french. coming up, we'll discuss the

split in the gop with former republican white house chief of staff andrew card. a major east/west freeway in southern california reopened early this morning after a police chase stranded thousands of motorists. police chased a murder suspect considered armed and dangerous on the 91 freeway. earlier they grabbed the suspect after firing teargas into a black car. the chase shut down the freeway in anaheim for hours. a key commuter route into and out of l.a. the freeway was backed up for miles during rush hour. in alberta, canada, officials hope to begin moving thousands of evacuees stranded in oil work camps north of a massive wildfire. but the fire is spreading. nearly 90,000 people were forced to evacuate from ft. mcmurray. now flames have reached the small town of anzac to the south. the fire burned some 1,600 buildings in ft. mcmurray. there have been no injuries reported, but entire neighborhoods have been reduced to ash. officials say it will take

mother nature to stop the fire. >> air tankers are not going to stop this fire. this fire is an extreme fire event. it's going to continue to push through these dry conditions until we get some significant rain to help us. >> the fire has burned nearly 330 square miles. no rain is expected in the area until tomorrow. a fire at a houston warehouse is now under control. the four-alarm fire started yesterday morning. it destroyed the building and raised concerns about the release of hazardous material. a nearby elementary school was evacuated, but there are no reports of any injuries. what appears to be an electrical explosion shut down parts of the washington, d.c., subway system. service was suspended yesterday afternoon, but no injuries are reported. today officials are expected to unveil a plan to overhaul the metro system. seven people were injured when severe turbulence rocked an allegiant airlines charter

flight. it was en route from the dominican republic to pittsburgh when it made an emergency landing in ft. lauderdale yesterday. it hit rough air near the bahamas. passengers and crew were slammed around the cabin. >> just normal turbulence and suddenly the plane just was taking a nosedive. felt like i was on a roller coaster going straight down. >> thought i was going to die, it felt like. really scary. >> the injured, three passengers and four crew members, were treated at a hospital. for the first time, the federal government is regulating the electronic cigarette industry. the devices will no longer be sold to anyone under 18 and require new health warnings. hundreds of brands will now have to get fda approval. the vaping industry says many small businesses will be forced to close. kenneth craig has our report. >> reporter: dethis woman runs three vaping stories in new york city. she's worried the new fda rules could ruin her business.

>> horrifying. potentially disastrous. >> reporter: manufacturers of most electronic cigarettes will now have to undergo federal review to stay on the market. >> these regulations are common sense. people who buy e-cigarettes and other tobacco products deserve to have the facts. >> reporter: it also bans selling e-cigarettes, cigars and hookah products to anyone under 18. the move comes as e-cigarette use is on the rise among young americans. e-cigarette sales soared to a $3.5 billion business last year, but sales have recently slowed over questions about their safety. while the possible health benefits and harms of e-cigarettes remain unclear, many in the vaping community claim they've helped smokers quit regular cigarettes and are less harmful. industry spokespeople call the rules draconian. >> it will put a lot of them out of the business if changes are not made because it will be an extremely expensive and onerous process for them to comply. >> reporter: she's more concerned about her customers than her business.

>> it ends up leaving us in a situation where we have nothing that will work for certain people, and they return to combustible tobacco. >> reporter: the new rule goes into effect in 90 days. kenneth craig, cbs news, new york. north carolina lawmakers are in no rush to meet a federal deadline on a law the justice department says discriminates against transgender people. house bill 2 requires transgender people to use bathrooms conforming to their birth certificates. the justice department set a monday deadline for the state to declare the rule will not be enforced. the north carolina house speaker said there will be no action by monday and, quote, we will not be bullied by the obama administration. there's a new accusation in the penn state child sex abuse scandal that coach joe paterno allegedly knew for decades about abuse by jerry sandusky. they claim a boy told paterno in 1976 that sandusky had raped

him. paterno did not report allegations until 2010. paterno died in 2012. sandusky is serving decades in prison for sexually assaulting ten boys. prosecutors will seek the death penalty for the killer known as the grime sleeper. lonnie franklin jr. was convicted yesterday on ten counts of murder. he targeted poor, young black women. >> almost all of them were found in filthy alleyways, mostly in south los angeles. all of them were dumped like trash. >> the killings took place over a 22-year span starting in 1985. dna linked the former trash collector to crimes. north korea's ruling party is holding its first full congress in 36 years today. but whether it will lift the veil on kim jong-un's secretive regime isn't known. foreign journalists were not admitted to the site. the congress has authority on paper, but power is closely held by kim and his inner circle.

"the new york times" reports the lockdown of some southern new jersey schools because of an escaped prisoner. arthur buckle fled a minimum security facility tuesday. he was spotted the next day by a store security camera. he has a previous manslaughter conviction and would have been eligible for parole in just two weeks. the "minneapolis star tribune" reports that arsenio hall is suing sinead o'connor for saying he supplied drugs to prince. the libel filing over her facebook post seeks more than $5 million in damages. the suit claims the singer barely knew prince and despised him. the "dallas morning news" reports on johnny manziel's antics during a hearing on a domestic abuse misdemeanor. court observers say the former cleveland browns quarterback held up a middle

yesterday the dow rose 9 points. the s&p fell less than a point. the nasdaq lost 8. a new twist to t-mobile's ongoing uncarrier promotion. they're giving away company stock. among the weekly giveaways they may get a one-time grant of one quarter of a share of t-mobile stock. it's currently trading at about $40 a share. customers may also be in line for free domino's pizza, a wendy's frosty or free movie download. it's all the news that's fit to eat. "the new york times" will begin selling and delivering ingredients from its cooking website. they're teaming up with the meal delivery start-up chef'd. they'll get the ingredients within 48 hours of placing an order. they are looking for new ways to make money amid the uncertain future of publishing. that service is starting this summer. apple says a glitch that broke the search function in its app store yesterday has been resolved. customers used it to find apps

>> daddy's going to take your picture. >> reporter: sarah is grateful for her little girl sasha and her own health this mother's day. in november, she and her husband received shocking news. >> we found out we were having the baby with a home pregnancy test, and a week later found out we had cancer. >> reporter: the 34-year-old needed a series of scans right away which involved radiation. >> we decided after weighing the risks and benefits that it was more beneficial to get the mammogram. so we shielded the baby. >> reporter: scans showed cancer in both breasts. dr. sharon rosenbaum smith from mt. sinai west says many treatments are safe for pregnant women, but it's best to wait until after the first trimester. >> there are certain ones you cannot give during pregnancy, but there are other chemo regiments which are absolutely safe. >> reporter: sarah had surgery to remove the cancer then started chemotherapy. >> all the things you can't do when pregnant.
