vincent smith was struck while he was on highway 50 in sacramento yesterday. he was trying to move two vehicle involved in a second crash. smith was struck in the upper and lower torso. >> you suffer major injury through the collision and he's still in very serious condition. we have our command staff and his family there at the hospital with him. and we're praying for a speedy recovery. >> officer smith is an 18 year veteran of the chp. in a statement, fed ex said our thoughts are with the officer and others involved in this accident and we're cooperating fully with the authorities as they conduct their investigation. after more than two weeks without food. the so called frisco five have ended their hunger strike but their protest isn't over. mark kelly is in san francisco city hall where activists are planning a strike tomorrow. >> organizers say for this strike they don't want anyone

spending any money in san francisco tomorrow to protest what they are calling a racist and violent police department. even after friday's rally had protesters and sheriff deputies clashing, supporters of frisco5 say they'll be back to city hall. this time they want the entire public to strike. >> to not go to work. if children want to walk out with the permission of their parents they can walk out. >> reporter: protesters are calling this event a general strike. saturday, the hunger strike phase came to an end. after wheelchair bound frisco5 went 17 days without food and landed in the hospital. >> they're ready to get healthy and move ton the next step of this movement. >> reporter: this movement has moved beyond the original

frisco5. and is now getting a nod from influential groups. >> i think that people putting their bodies on the line really focuses everyone's mind on what's happening. >> reporter: anticipating a large turn out at the strike, john gollinger and the san francisco reformed democrats decided to delay their get out the vote event, planned for tomorrow at city hall. voting is important but it's also important to bring end to this dire issue to people who are being discriminated against every day. >> reporter: hundreds have promised to continue these rallies until their demands are met. >> if the chief of police need to be followed, since the mayor stands behind him, the mayor needs to go too. >> reporter: late last week, mayor ed lee spoke with the strike organizers over the phone but those organizizers telling me today that the mayor stood by his police chief. live at san francisco city hall, mark kelly. >> the sheriff's department made 33 arrests at friday's protest.

the vargas plateau regionalk ays ago. kpix 5 hikers have a new way to explore in the east bay. the largest plateau rougal park opened a few days ago. don ford was right there as workers put the finishing touches on signs. he explains why the new park has been years in the making. >> 1,249 acres. once a cattle ranch to the hills above fremont. now the newest east bay regional park. >> yes it's very exciting. not every day we open a new park. >> not quite open yet, lots of finishing touches being completed and it's not exactly new either. the district purchased the land in 1993, 23 years ago. 23 years is a long time. how in the world did it take that long. >> the planning process is five years here, five years there and also we faced some lawsuits from neighbors up there. >> just below the ranch, folks in the north gate neighborhood say this is where it all started. more than two decades ago.

the district planned to have the main gate here. but concerns about traffic, the amount of people hiking and biking through the neighborhood led to lawsuits. lawsuits that left the land languishing. now the suits are settled and the main gate has moved. >> i guess realistically we'll just see how it goes in the way of traffic. >> the new main gate is on top of the hill. with only one road leading to it, vegas road. >> there's going to be either a serious injury or a death on that road. >> chris george owns the george ranch right next to the new park. he says the park is opening before the promised road improvements have been completed. and he wants the park district to follow the settlement agreement first. >> any other developer that would have to build up there would have to make that road safe. >> this remote yet beautiful land may not have seen its last
