>> even after friday's rally had protesters and sheriff deputies clashing, supporters of the frisco five say they'll be back at city hall. and this time they want the entire public to strike. >> to not go to work. if children want to walk out with the permission of their parents they can walk out. >> reporter: protesters are calling this event a general strike. saturday, the hunger strike phase came to an end. after wheelchair bound frisco5 went 17 days without food and landed in the hospital. >> they're in good spirits, and they're ready to get healthy and move on to the next step of this movement. >> reporter: this movement has grown beyond the original frisco5. and this strike is now getting a nod from influential san francisco groups also concerned about the number of minorities shot and killed by san

francisco police. >> i think that people putting their bodies on the line really you know focuses everyone's mind on what's happening. >> reporter: anticipating a large turn out at the strike, john gollenger and the san francisco reform democrats decided to delay their get out the vote event planned for tomorrow at city hall. >> voting is important but it's also important to bring attention to this dire issue that people are being injured, killed and discriminated against on the streets every day. >> reporter: hundreds have promised to continue these rallies until their demand are met. >> since the mayor stands behind him, the mayor needs to go too. >> reporter: and late last week, mayor ed lee did speak with the protesters over the phone and they say that the mayor is still standing by his police chief. live at san francisco city hall, mark kelly, kpix5. the sheriff department made 33 arrests at friday's protest. their spokesperson says they're making appropriate plans for

tomorrow's event. now amidst the rising tensions, preliminary findings from an sfpd investigation into racist and homo phobic texts are now being made. 14 officers were allegedly involved. the preliminary findings will be presented tomorrow evening at the african american art and culture complex. police officers are about to start wearing body cameras and they're not going to have much choice in the matter. the city council approved the cameras. they come with an automatic activation feature that powers the device on as soon as an officer activates lights and sirens. >> we've had cameras in our cars since 2011. so we have about five years experience of recording situations out on patrol. and we figured that body cameras will be a natural transition to help capture some of the things that don't occur

right immediately near the police car. >> the automatic activation feature only works when the officer is in or near the car. if they're out on foot they will have to manually turn the camera on. 41-year-old gregory ramirez of san lorenzo is in jail now. facing charges. the 18 year veteran was dealing with a two car crash when he was struck at about 3:30 in the morning on saturday. he's still in the hospital tonight. and the chp says he is set to have multiple surgeries. >> he suffered mayor injuries through the collision and he's still in very serious condition. we have our command staff and his family there at the hospital with him and we're praying for him speedy recovery. >> ramirez is being held on

$50,000 bail. he's scheduled to appear in court on tuesday afternoon. two san jose brothers charged with killing their parents face a judge again tomorrow. o galamr, -- galamrabi is in jail. the prosecutors say they'll be ready to present their case but, the defense indicated last week it might need a bit more time. the man accused of stabbing a prominent san francisco defense attorney to death in her home also is due in court tomorrow. our joe vasquez is outside the home, joe. >> reporter: as you can see right behind me bryan. a makeshift memorial is set up with family and friends. the scene all day today, people have been coming up saying a few words. shedding a few tears often and then laying flowers down to remember her life.

marilyn was found here saturday. we understand he's in the hospital still. about marla, she's a long time defense attorney and public defender. she was well known in the legal community. down at the courthouse no matter what side of the isle -- aisle you were on she was family. >> outside of the courtroom she was really a lovely person. a really, good person. i would consider her a friend. >> inside the courtroom at times you were facing up against her. >> that's actually true. and she was a fierce advocate. she represented her clients well. and really believed in the system. >> reporter: back at 2012, marla zamora defended the indefensible. public defender jeff adachi a long time friend of hers tells

me his office will not defending the office. an outside defender will be hired. according to family and friends, the suspect is her grand nephew. and in fact, according to the friends who knew him, he spent a lot of time here, he was here on and off inside the apartment. that is leading up to a lot of shock in this neighborhood and among the many people who knew marla zamora. i'm joe vasquez. the cross country flight to san francisco had to make an emergency flight to montana after a passenger suddenly died. the plane was heading to chicago when the passenger suddenly died. the unidentified woman was later pronounced dead. there's no official word on the cause of death. but investigators say she had preexisting medical issues. well back in the bay area. mostly gloomy saturday gave way to a little bit of sunday

sunshine in san francisco today. and plenty of people were out along the embarcadero this afternoon enjoying it. taking a live look outside right now. clouds have parted, the sun is out as we look toward the bay bridge. that's going to set a trend for next week. the storm has pushed far enough east to ensure a mild look ahead. we have all the details as we cover weather in a few minutes. all the wet weather we've been seeing lately has fire season off to a slow start and it's a welcomed relief after last year's devastating fires in lake county. but firefighters say it could all happen again in a flash. kpix devin feley joins us from the hills in san jose. >> reporter: fire season is now just getting under way and so far so good. but calfire says the dangerous, potentially dangerous combination of drought and fire remains a threat. cal fire says don't let these green hillsides fool you, everyone though fire season has gotten off to a slow start.

the lingering effects could affect them, and quickly. >> it continues to get drier and drier. any time during that time if we get a wind event then we're very susceptible to a large damaging fire. >> reporter: so far fire season statewide has been mild. there's been significantly fewer wildfires. 619 through april 30th compared to 917 last year. a 32% drop. the fires have been smaller and more quickly contained. with roughly 600 acres burned through last month compared to more than 9,000 acres during the same time period last year. but cal fire says we're by no stretch of the imagination out of the woods yet. in fact, years of drought have left millions of trees dead or dying. potential -- foder for the next big fire. >> this was considered not a

big fire season, but that could change. >> calfire says it's a good time for a little prevention. knowing that what we know now could be wild later on. >> it's a good time now to get the defensible space around your home. >> now one final note, calfire says that the overwhelming majority of fires are actually sparked by human beings. so they say as we get into the summer months it is especially important to be careful. >> all righty. devin. star fish are making a come back along the west coast. a wasting disease has been killing them away in droves. juvenile star fish are now being found in big numbers along northern california and oregon. researchers say probably because no more food is available because there's less competition from adult star fish. and still to come.

plane landed on top of a building in pomona. the plane was report some incredible video out of southern california tonight where a small plane landed on top of a building in pomona. the plane was reportedly coming in for a lander where there was some sort of malfunction. it skidded to a stop on that roof there. we saw firefighters taking one person down a ladder on a stretcher. right now it's not clear how many people were on board that plane or the extent of the injury. also in southern california tonight, a yearbook typo has one muslim high schooler outraged. the 11th grader who was wearing a jihab in her photo was listed

as isis phillips that's not her name. she says she is upset. school officials in rancho cucomonga are calling it a mistake, and some students agree. >> i feel it's a mistake. if everything in the world was not going on with the whole isis terrorist group, everything would have interpreted differently. >> the school district investigating the misprint. someone in san jose is a newly minted millionaire. a ticket purchased in task and flask. that ticket is worth $1.3 million. some where in new jersey is a ticket worth $29.9 million. the winner has not come forward yet. >> well for those of us who have not won the lottery and still have to work. state lawmakers are trying to give us a bit of a break.

the reliability schedules act would require employers to give their workers a set schedule three weeks at a time and at least seven days in advance. and employees would have to be paid extra for last minute changes. it's geared specifically toward people in the service industry and working parents. facebook's coo sheryl sandburg says until her husband's death she never realized how hard it is to be a single parent. in a touching postshe writes people become single parents for many reasons, loss of a partner, loss of a relationship by choice. one year ago i joined them. sandburg died on vacation. she conceived she's fortunate not to have the economic worries of other single moms. and asking to belter support the many who are struggling. she says before i did not quite get it. i did not really get how hard

it is to succeed at work when you're overwhelmed at home. we should give special thanks to the women who are raising children on their own. and let's vow to do more to support them every day. from brave parents to courageous kids today. hundreds of california children got to spend a day away from cancer. 49ers hall of fammer ronny lott was on hand for the courageous kids great america. children gathered at the picnic grove where kids got a chance to draw, wave at the camera and play on merry go rounds. it's a welcomed opportunity for kids just to have fun. >> there's not a kid out there that doesn't want to be like all his buddies and all his friends. and so for them to be. they get to come out here and celebrate, to act just like a normal kids. to not have any things to worry about. not to worry about the doctors, not to worry about being in the hospital. it's a great day. >> families got tickets for

today's events through cancer treatment centers around the state including many in the bay area. it was a special mother's day for new moms. this woman gave birth to two boys, jackson and jeremiah who clearly have impeccable timing. a bay area couple stranded in mexico with their surrogate baby last year are now celebrating mother's day at home in the bay area this year. we first introduced you to christie and amira and their baby grayson. when they were skypeing from their hotel room in mexico city. the couple was denied a passport to the child after he was born by surrogate in mexico. fast forward to today, check this out. this is baby grayson walking hand in hand with his parents.

they're enjoying mother's day with family and friends. the family says one day, grayson will learn about his parent's quest to have a baby and their journey to bring him home. but for now they're just enjoying parenthood back home and this very special mother's day. >> didn't you -- you were the one who did that story. >> what a difference a year makes. >> that dad was quite a story. and glad to see so far happy ending. we're not seeing much out there. which is as for forecast. high pressure is building in weekly. as -- as a result there's not a drop. just a few high clouds around the bay area. and the numbers right now in concord is 68 degrees. livermore 68 as well. so a nice and mild finish to mother's day in the bay area. 64 in santa rosa. that low pressure has finally moved far enough east that it's causing tornadoes and thunderstorms. all sorts of nasty weather out in colorado.

for us high pressure builds in. might take a little while to burn off. but then sunshine and a dry week ahead. with no rain in sight. look at the extent of the cloud cover as we go into the wee hours and sunrise. it clears out about midday. take heart if you wake up to overcast tomorrow morning. so here's what we're expecting. partly cloudy and dry tonight. more sunshine for monday. for most folks, for the rest of the week increasing sunshine. no rain in sight. and travel weather forecast heading out of the bay area tomorrow down five or 99 to fresno. 84degrees in fresno. no thunderstorms for tahoe or yosemite. the numbers there will be very nice in the mid-60s. overnight lows will be near 50 degrees. sun up tomorrow at five minutes after 6:00 in the morning. and here's how it looks for the

forecast. close to seasonal averages. a little cooler than average but warmer than we have seen it lately by just a nudge. 64 in the city tomorrow. 73 at concord. in san jose for monday 71. and in oakland 68 degrees. for tomorrow, south bay. a lot of low clouds to start the day way. then we will have numbers at 70 degrees. a little warmer at cupertino and campbell. look at brentwood almost a nudging 80 degrees there. but you come over to the 680 corridor. and the calavera s will go. nice and pleasant and 76. we're going to be looking for numbers to be in the 70s this week through next weekend. more sunshine. slightly warmer temperatures by the end of the week. if you see any rain drops in that extended forecast you're a better man than me.

supporters of the so-called "frisco five" are organizina general strike at san franc city hall tomorrow. the group ended th our top stories tonight, supporters of the frisco5 are generating a strike. the group ended their hunger strike this weekend after going more than two weeks without food. they're calling for the police chief to resign after a string of deadly police shootings and the release of racist text messages. angelo zamora is still in the hospital after being found

injured. neighbors say he's a relative of zamora. and fire season has gotten off to a start. our neighbors to the north not so lucky. they have a huge wildfire raging across eastern alberta is now raging. 90,000 people have fled their hole. one resident describing the devastation as a scene from the walking dead. and peter ackman shows us there's no end in sight. >> reporter: pounding the raging flames from the sky and protecting the remaining structures in and around fort mcmurray on the ground. fire crews have been working around the clock. >> some guys not even having a chance to sleep. just going in and out 24/7. >> reporter: the high winds and dry conditions have made it dangerous for those tasked with putting it out.

>> this is definitely a different type of fire. like it's, you know jumping from sometimes building to building. >> unpredictable but despite the risks, police resume the convoys of stranded people from north of the city. also being evacuated several near by oil -- sink route closing three sites because of thick smoke. >> we got safety measures in place. >> reporter: but while the wildfires have all but stopped oil production, the resources on-site are still being utilized. >> reporter: while some are leaving, much more support keeps coming north up highway 63. people looking to help in any way they can. brendan zere was forced to leave now he's volunteering with the spca to locate all the pets left behind. >> we figured all the people are out. and the only lives left at

months. the national average is at $2.21 a gallon. of course our average is much higher at $2.81. here in the bay area, it's higher still. drivers in san francisco are paying just under $3 a gallon. it's about $2.84 in oakland and $2.82 in san jose. speaking of cars, every 42 second a car is stolen and the bay area is the -t hot spot. we found out the number one car thieves are after and how you can fight back. >> doors open on that it's going to be stolen. >> reporter: you're looking at what's left of somebody's work van. >> reporter: tools gone, ignition stripped, battery cut out. dumped on a street in oakland. >> reporter: recovered by veteran chp investigator mark sinch. he says stolen vehicles are an easy find here in oakland. and the most recent data given by the national insurance crime

bureau backed him up. from 2012 to 2014 nearly 90,000 vehicles were stolen here. making the bay area the number one hot spot in the u.s. for vehicle theft. >> they cut everything pretty much usable out of this car. >> reporter: many of the cars end up chopped. the parts sold right here in the east bay. >> for a hot motor you know you can make four, five grand on it maybe. >> reporter: the prime target now, newer model camaros. 2010 to 2015 to be exact. loaded with high resale volume. >> you can't under estimates how it feels. >> reporter: her 2013 camaro was boosted in broad daylight. her car one of nearly 300 camaros stolen in the east bay in just the last three years. nearly all recovered completely stripped. >> they take that super engine and they take everything part they can. >> they're in.

a bay area bridge will be closing down on wednesday. d it won't reopen -- for two years. time to look at some of the big stories happening tomorrow. >> the embarcadero bridge spanning the channel in oakland is being rebuilt to be more seismically safe. traffic will be detoured until the new one opens in may 2018. that's not the only thing closing for an upgrade this week. alama square mark will be getting a major make over. it'll be closed while crews install a new irrigation

it about a half- mile wide. storm chasers that caught i camera yesterday say it ripd through about ten miles. check out this massive twister. storm chasers that caught it on camera yesterday said it ripped through 10 miles. at least five people were hurt. the twisters also knocked down electrical poles and tipped over a dozen trailers. >> people, pets were okay.
