>> live, from the cbs bay area studios, this is kpix5 news. >> their hunger strike is over. now protesters who want san francisco's police chief fired are changing tactics calling for something bigger. >> joe vasquez is live at city hall to explain. joe? >> reporter: the frisco5 went to the hospital friday. they will be there a few more days. yesterday, they called off their hunger strike. tomorrow, they want everyone to play hooky and come down to city hall and protest. after 17 days of dramatic demonstrations and hospitalizations, the frisco5 have called off their hunger strike but they are not finished. they are now calling for a

general strike. they want everybody to make monday off. >> if children want to walk out with the permission of their parents they can walk out. we are asking everyone to join us in a peaceful silent protest in front of city hall. >> reporter: a general strike is usually a term referred for labor unions or implies it would have the support of unions but many of the unions will hold early morning meetings to talk about whether they will participate. >> with respect to our unit, we have not decided yet. we know a lot of folks in the unit will be making that decision as well. >> reporter: one political group has decided to honor the call for a strike. john gullinger and the san francisco reform democrats have called off their get out the vote event. >> voting is important, but this is a dire issue that people are being injured, killed and discriminated on the streets. >> reporter: that union representative i interviewed,

josh arce, happen to be running against one of the strikers. he says there is is a definite split in the community between those who believe the police chief should be fired and those who believe he should stay on and push through the reforms. reporting live, i'm joe vasquez, kpix5. >> that planned strike comes as initial finings from an investigation will be made public t. san francisco da established a blue ribbon panel to look into racist and homophobic texts. the man accused of murdering a defense attorney is due in court tomorrow. marla zamoro was found stabbed to death in her home friday. neighbors tell us angelo zamora was related to her and had been living with her. no word on a possible mote i for the killing. and two san jose brothers charged in the murders of their parents are expected in court.

hasib and omar ogolumrabi are accused of gunning down their parents last month. prosecutors say they are ready to move forward but the defense attorneys say they need more time. a bay area man is under arrest in a crash that left a veteran highway patrol officer seriously injured. the suspect was driving a fedex truck while probably being high on drugs. kpix5's maria medina with the moments that led up to that crash. >> we are praying for a speedy recovery. >> reporter: tonight as officer vincent smith lies in the hospital surrounded by his colleagues and family, gregory ramirez of san lorenzo stands behind bars accused of slamming his fedex truck into smith in sacramento. no one answered at the home where a next door neighbor says ramirez's family lives. the neighbor says ramirez moved out a couple of years ago. investigators say they found drugs on ramirez, but wouldn't

say what type and that he was likely high when he hit smith and his police cruiser saturday morning. smith was standing outside in the process of clearing a hit and run accident. >> patrol vehicles, overheadlights were all activated. those led brights are very bright. >> reporter: tonight, fedex isn't saying much about where ramirez was headed and how long he had been on the road. only releasing a statement saying in part, we are fully cooperating with investigating authorities. smith was nearly two decades of protecting our community now in critical condition. >> he is very well liked. a very well respected officer in our department. >> reporter: maria medina, kpix5. boy, take a look at this. a small plane made an incredible landing today on top of a building. the single engine aircraft skidded to a stop in pamona down in southern california.

it was trying to land in an airport a few miles away but there was a malfunction. the two people on board were okay. tonight, a high school is under fire for how a muslim student was labeled in the yearbook. reporter jeff nguyen on the story. >> reporter: it is a yearbook photo of a 17-year-old student. she is wearing her islamic head scarf called a hijab. the problem has to do with the name printed for her. isis phillips. >> racism. >> reporter: we reached out to the teen's family, but they didn't want to go on camera. her father was shocked and doesn't know how her name was linked to a terror group. the principal said they are taking every step possible to correct and investigate a

regrettable misprint. >> i don't think this is an honest mistake. i really think this is a wicked joke. >> reporter: on the girl's facebook page, she wrote i am extremely saddened, disgusted. they had the awe disty to say this was a typo. i beg to differ. let's be real. >> i'm muslim and it hurts me. >> reporter: the yearbook committee apologized online saying it is the responsibility of us to represent the students of los osos and we failed to do so this time. jeff nguyen, kpix5 news. >> they are planning to meet with school administrators tomorrow. his daughter will stay home until all sides can work owl a solution. thieves ram their way goo a gun store near sacramento. three suspects back an suv through the front door and all

ran in. one tries to jump over a glass counter and his knee goes through the glass. they couldn't get any guns because they couldn't open the safe. another break-in happened 20 minutes later and no guns were taken then either. the new chest cams will go into service next month in danville. theirs will switch on as soon as an officer turned on the overheadlights and sirens in the patrol car. but if an officer happen to be away from the car, they will have to turn it on manually. >> there will certainly be a circumstance where something happened away from the patrol car. if the officer was suddenly attacked, it will be difficult to try and remember to hit this button. >> officers are hopeful their experience with car cameras will help make the transition to body cams a smooth one. the oakland city council will hold a public hearing tomorrow on the potential impact of hauling crude oil through town on trains. the city has also hired a

consultant to look into it. our fire season saw to a slow start thanks to the wet winter but firefighters are staying on alert. they tell our devin fehely things could spark in an instant. >> reporter: cal fire says don't let the green hillsides fool you. though fire season is starting slowly, the lingering effects of the state's drought could replace them. >> it just continues to get drier and drier. any time during that time, if we get a wind event, then we are very susceptible to a large damaging fire. >> reporter: fire season statewide has been mild. there have been significantly fewer wild fires in the first part of the year. 619 through april 30 compared to 917 last year. a 34% drop. and the fires have been smaller and more quickly contained. with roughly 600 acres burned statewide through the end of last month, compared to more than 9,000 acres during the

same time period last year. but cal fire says we are by no stretch of the imagination out of the woods yet. in fact, years of drought have left millions of trees dead or dying. potential fodder for the next big fire. >> this year is shaping up as not as severe as last year. however, that could change if we get fires in those areas where there is an estimated 30 million trees that have died. >> reporter: fire season typically peaks in mid to late summer and stretches into the fall. cal fire says it is a good time for a little prevention. knowing that what is mild now could be wild later on. >> it is a good time now to get the defensible space around your home. >> reporter: prevention and caution are the keys. they say the overwhelming majority of wild fires are actually sparked by humans. in the hills above san jose, devin fehely, kpix5. coolerwet sir helping firefighters in canada get a handle on a massive fire there. it has been burning nearly a

week and scorched 400,000 acres. the fire was expected to double in size over the weekend and reach the saskatchewan border but the winds change. the temperatures cooled and it is giveing the canadians hope. the area around fort mcmurray has been evacuated. it is the most destructive fire canada has seen in recent memory. and the same storm system that caused storms in california has whipped up a dozen tornadoes in colorado. this one a half mile wide. it tore up about ten miles. at least five people were hurt when trailers were tipped over and electric lines came down. the clock is ticking for north carolina leader to reverse the state's controversial bathroom law. it requires transgender people to use bathrooms that match the sex on their birth certificate. the u.s. justice department says it is a civil rights violation and if the state and the university of north carolina don't lift it by tomorrow, attorneys will take legal action to stop it. and now to the race for the

white house. donald trump and hillary clinton continue attacking each other over policy issues. meanwhile, gop leaders say they will not back trump. but he says he doesn't need them. >> reporter: as donald trump waits for republicans like house speaker paul ryan to decide whether to support him, he told abc's this week, he doesn't need their endorsements. >> it would be better if it were unified. there would be something good about it but i don't think it has to be unified. >> reporter: he will meet with ryan who said last week he wasn't ready to support trump. in response, former vice presidential candidate sarah palin said she will oppose speaker ryan in his own primary. >> his political career is over, but for a miracle because he is so disrespectful to the will of the people. >> reporter: democrats also remain divided. at a rally in new jersey sunday, bernie sanders vowed to keep campaigning and argued he has won nearly half the pledged

delegates. >> but, as all of you who are good in math go, we have to make it 50%. >> reporter: hillary clinton has all but secure first-degree nomination. cbs news says she has 93% of the delegates needed to win. >> as we sit here today, i have 3 million more votes than senator sanders. he has to make his own mind up. >> reporter: clinton return to the campaign trail monday with an event in virginia. >> bernie sanders is visiting california ahead of the june 7 primary. going to hold a rally in sacramento tomorrow night. tuesday morning, he will be in stockton. you can also watch him on the late show with stephen colbert here tomorrow night. a measure on the june ballot would allow california lawmaker to suspend their colleagues without pay. it comes after an ethics crisis in 2014 when three suspended senators kept getting their

salaries. leland yee and juan calderon were suspected of getting bribes but rode out the remainder of their terms with pay while suspended. rob wright was convicted of lying about where he lived. now prop 50 would amend the state constitution to allow two- thirds of the legislative chamber to suspend a member with or without pay. well, as california edges close tore legalizing recreational marijuana, growers are rushing to grab a piece of the action. and our ken bastida found out it is creating a land grab not seen in more than a century. >> reporter: the calaveras county town of mountain ranch boomed during the gold rush. now 166 years later it is booming again. >> we call it the green rush. not the gold rush. >> reporter: green as in marijuana. the new gold up here.

bill schmidt has 15 grows on his desk. >> we pretty well know what you are looking for. >> reporter: schmidt says it is going so well, he is fixing to pack up and move to mexico. a few months ago, this town of 1600 was nearly wiped out by the butte fire. land that is being resettled now by growers who want to get in ahead of california's november initiative that could set a path for legalized recreational marijuana. >> how long have you been up here? >> reporter: growers like cap pain. a former english teacher who acquired this 20-acre parcel last year and liked to compare his crop to fine wine. >> it is a little different. like a red or white wine and they have to be cured and taken care of like wine. >> reporter: he didn't want us to show his face or real name. but captain insists his operation is in full compliance

with state law. >> we are not doing anything outside of what we regulate so far. what they allow. so we are within the guidelines of california. >> reporter: his cultivation operation is the epitome of organization and high-tech. cloning his own varieties and harvesting hundreds of pounds of marijuana in large custom built houses and drying barning. >> the rest of the country seems to be loving it and california is one thing more. all the time. we are just going to keep working as hard as we can. >> reporter: captain says he and other legit growers pay their taxes and are providing much needed employment for hundreds of people still reeling from last fall's fire. and a lagging economy. according to the county, if you add up the cattle industry, the wine industry, and the timber harvest, you are talking about 27, $28 million. marijuana in calaveras county right now is worth about $100 million. he is part of an ever expanding

co-op of growers here hoping to cash in on the green rush. planning for what they believe will be the total legalization of pot in california. >> i love wine. we are not restricted on prohibition to drink. we can make our own alcohol now. it should be the same for this product. >> reporter: ken bastida, kpix5. >> now the calaveras county board of supervisors is set to meet next week. they could recommend a ban or a moratorium on any new pot growing in the county or continue with a hands off policy. part two of ken's report, why the green rush has many long time residents worried. that's tomorrow. well, work begins tomorrow on the next phase of the the bay bridge bike path. temporary support to the position for the new observation deck near yerba buena island. there were delays connected to the old bridge. now it is slated to be completed by september two

years behind schedule. speaking of bikes, bike to workday is coming up this thursday, so we want to share your bike to work story, post your pictures and video on our kpix5 instagram or twitter and we will put some on the air. if you are looking for a get away, it is getting easier to head to canada from the bay area. air canada will launch twice daily service to vancouver from san jose mineta airplane. back in the bay area, we are starting off with the kpix5 high-def doppler to illustrate there is not much happening. the sensitivity is ramped up looking like there is something falling but there is not. no rain coming down tonight. nor will there be for the next couple of weeks. as we look live, the numbers are mostly in the mid 50s around the bay area. most locations reporting cloudy to mostly cloudy conditions. one exception, livermore, clear skies there. but elsewhere, a lot of clouds

and that is going to set the tone for the early going tomorrow morning. fair and mild week ahead. no rain in sight all the way through next weekend. just some minor fluctuations. if you like clouds you will get them tomorrow morning. plenty of low clouds. so here is tomorrow afternoon. clouds an. then they begin to clear up toward sunset. so don't expect sterling sunrise tomorrow morning over california. we will get a lot of low clouds before the sun peaks out here and there around the bay area. so, partly cloudy, dry tonight. we will get a little more sunshine tomorrow after the low clouds burn off. and then increasing sunshine as we head toward the latter half of the week and no rain in sight. tonight, the numbers fairly mild. we will look at near 50 degrees for overnight lows. sun up tomorrow morning at 6:05. and to do it by the numbers just a little bit warmer tomorrow than today. hardly noticeable. and around seasonal averages. san jose, 71 degrees is average this time of year.

oakland, 68 for tomorrow. now, to south bay, we begin with plenty of low clouds and sun will begin to come out later in the afternoon. by the shoreline, cooler numbers. low 60s for pacifica and half- moon bay. temperatures range from 68 to the low 70s in morgan hill. in brentwood, lit be warm. antioch, 73. benicia in the mid 60s . right around the calaveras fault. the numbers will be in the low 70s . up in the north bay, looking nice tomorrow. after the low clouds. mill valley, 70 degrees. sausalito 67. a little warmer in santa rosa. ukiah is nice. in the extended forecast, the numbers will begin to warm as we get toward tuesday and wednesday. then we almost get toward the 80-degree mark. mid 70s around the bay all week long. mid 60s at the shoreline. how about next wreaked? it will cool a little bit.
